Private money goes to pro-Edwards 527

The Alliance for a New America, the pro-Edwards 527 which has been described as a labor group, has received more than half a million dollars from private sources.

According to the group's filing, which isn't online at the FEC's site yet, but which the commission provided upon request, the 527 has raised and spent almost $1.7 million.

Though more than half of that money comes from a set of unions, largely SEIU members, $495,000 came in a single check from an entity linked to Rachel Mellon, the widow of Paul Mellon, who inherited his share of the great American fortunes. Another $25,000 come from the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Andrew Rappaport and his wife.

The $495,000 check came from Oak Spring Farms LLC, which has written large checks to groups associated with Edwards in the past. The New York Sun's Josh Gerstein reported last year that the company is linked to a lawyer who holds power of attorney for Mellon, who was then 96. Mellon may be best known as a close friend of Jackie Kennedy's.

Mellon contributed the maximum to Edwards earlier this year, as did the lawyer, Alexander Forger, with each of them writing one check March 5, and another later in the month. Forger hasn't responded to a voicemail left at his office by Politico.

People are allowed to support the candidate that they like.

I am not wealthy and I support John Edwards because I like his policy proposals and his leaderhsip qualities. I do believe he will take on the fight to keep America strong for its poor and its middle class. I believe Edwards has the best positions on health care and energy as well.

BTW, Obama is advocating for builing new nuclear power plants, a thought that is terrifying to me. The company Exelon, the leading developer of nuclear power, is one of Obamas biggest financial supporters.

John Edwards is the only candidate with enough guts to say that corporate power is ruining America. No other candidate- Democrat, Republican or Bloombergcrat- is willing to speak the unvarnished truth about how Washington, D.C. works.

Here in Washington State, we will be caucusing on February 5 (contrary to what the MSNBC Political Calendar says) and we have Edwards volunteers organizing in every city and every Congressional District. Many Democrats and independents are responding to Edwards' straightforward message.

I hope that Edwards wins Iowa---Obama and Clinton have been so busy ripping each other to shreds and if either one wins the primaries they have given the republicans all the weapons to destroy---just like they always do.I am afraid we will end up with another republican Bush clone in 2009.Not much common sense.If Edwards wins in Iowa the money will come in no doubt.I am not saying if clinton takes the primary I would not support her ---I sure as hell would not vote for any of the lackluster and untrustworthy neocons.

Edwards lost me by turning a blind eye to the 527's. It tells me that he is motivated to win at any cost, even if that means compromising everything that he reportedly stands for. He is a hypocrite, and I am glad that we can see it before it's too late.

Not to mention, his response to Mrs. Bhutto's death yesterday. How inappropriate to call Musharrif. It will seem even more so if Musharrif is implicated in the assassination. He showed the same poor judgement that he has on his votes on Iraq, NAFTA, No Child Left Behind, and Yucca Mountain.

We do not need another president who is motivated by ego, and who has very poor judgement.

John Edwards voted for No Child Left Behind. Now he wants to fix it.
He voted for the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy -3 times
He voted against the estate tax
He voted for the Bankruptcy Ripoff bill
He voted for bankruptcy reform which has hurt many lower income families in this country.
Edwards voted for the Packer Ban and the Right to Work bill.
He voted against restricting consolidation of Big Meat Packing..
He voted against public financing -2 times
He vowed not to take public financing and now he has conveniently changed his tune and the party will carry this burden. There is no legitimate plan after Iowa.
He voted against the Wellstone VA funding amendment
He voted for free trade in China.
He acted like he was critical of offshore tax shelters for the wealthy in 2004, and then in 2005 he worked as a consultant for the Fortress Investment Group whose hedge funds were incorporated in the Cayman Islands. They foreclosed on homes in LA and even Iowa.
He voted against limit govt authority in the Patriot Act
Edwards voted for storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada (which IMO Nevadans will not be pleased).
John Edwards has the worst environmental record according to the League of Conservation voters ratings? '59 for JRE----- 96 for Barack Obama'.

Edwards CO-SPONSORED Lieberman's S.J.RES.46, the Iraq War Resolution, and also later promoted(on video)/voted for it in the full Senate to authorize the use of military force against Iraq. KYL-LIEBERMAN comes to mind. The more I look into John Edwards' record, the more troubling it is. Because the support for the war has gone down, are these hawks trying to play both sides of the fence. He didn't read the NIE report and lied and said he had at one point.
In the 2004 VP debate Dick Cheney brought up John Edwards' senate record, John Edwards clammed up. In this past CNN debate, when Hillary Clinton brought up his record , John Edwards sat down and clammed up, again.
Electability gave us John Kerry/John Edwards in 2004(Edwards never brought a single southern state to that ticket). John Edwards lost his home state(even lost his own district to GWB). He is not a terrible person, he is just not a winning ticket.
