I previously was a registered state-lobbyist similar to Mr. Hodges. I was required to register under state laws based upon the number of days I spent lobbying members of the state legislature. I was not, however, required to register as a federal lobbyist because I did not "walk the halls of Congress" on a daily or weekly basis. I did however meet with members of my state's congressional delegation when back in the district and four or five times a year in Washington. I was on a first name basis with chiefs of staff from every member of our congressional delegation. And I, as every other state lobbyist I have ever known, discussed federal issues with congressmen and their staffs. All within the law. Did I have influence over their voting...who knows? But it is not reasonable to suggest that state-registered lobbyists do not advocate issues on the federal level. In fact, many associations would argue that state-lobbyists were many times more effective than federal lobbyists because they lobbied "back home" in the district as well as in Washington.

My point...both Obama and Edwards are parsing words to suggest they stand for changing the system, when in fact they are already showing us the loopholes they will create. So much for politicians who plan real change.

I for one am mystified about how we exaggerate inconsequential issues and stake out all or nothing positions. The fact of the matter is, regardless of which candidate you support, that the only way to truly rein in the outlandish control that many PACs and special interest groups wield is to turn their Washington representatives against them. Using consultants like Gov. Hodges as messengers/go-betweens to give these special interests warning will give them a chance to "get with the program." In order for this to work and keep our economy running smoothly it's important that the next president is honest and of strong conviction, whoever he or she may be. Relying on former state officials turned lobbyists to coordinate state fundraising for their campaigns makes complete sense strategically and is irrelevant to their abilities to lead.

I wish reporters would report more objectively on facts rather than scribe contradictory quotes from competing campaigns. How about it. Who has a record of passing ethics/lobbyists reform legislation? Who campaigned on this issue first? Was Edwards talking about this in 2004?

Lobbyist working on a campaign is okay. The difference is what they do in the White House. Just about everyone works on a campaign of various candidates(that is called democracy). Lobbying is a constitutionally protected right(petition). I know many people want them sent to a leper colony, but it cannot be done.
Howard Dean set the standard for going directly to the people for contribution(that is a route of donations that Barack Obama is following).

He voted for the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy -3 times.

Edwards CO-SPONSORED and promoted(in videotaped speeches) Lieberman's S.J.RES.46, the Iraq War Resolution, and also later voted for it in the full Senate to authorize the use of military force against Iraq. KYL-LIEBERMAN comes to mind. The more I look into John Edwards' record, the more troubling it is. Because the support for the war has gone down, are these hawks trying to play both sides of the fence? He didn't read the NIE report and lied and said he had at one point.
He now has 2 workers that left his campaign and went directly to start 527s. Back in 2004, John Edwards asked GWB to ask 527 to stop.

Lol, I don't think anyone is going to get anywhere with that charge against Clinton. "Special deals" aside, lets not lose sight of the fact this is only entertainment writers anyway. Maybe this comment will draw a little fire, but I think in our guts we all realize its not like a real union, in the sense that unions for coal miners and steel workers prevent otherwise lethal working conditions.

Honoring this picket line to me would be like honoring millionaire baseball players, just because they happen to call themselves a union and decided an average salary above seven figures wasn't quite enough. A labor union should be for people who labor, and to me its a stretch to apply that label to guys who play sports or sit around comfy workspaces writing jokes.

I'm a Republican who has never voted for a Democrat presidential candidate (and almost definitely won't this time either). That being said, I don't think Hillary is the anti-Christ some make her out to be. The world won't end if she's elected (and if we're lucky, she'll be even more beneficial to the Republicans than was Bill). Obama is likeable and seems genuine and honest as far as politicians go. I like him, not his politics. Again, not the end of the world. As a Republican, my biggest fear is Edwards getting the nomination. I think he is the most electable at the end of the day. And I'd bet money that Obama will be on the ticket either at the top or as VP. And that would be a good decision for Democrats to make.

before this election john edwards was taking lobbyists and special interests money. go back to his senatorial campaign.

this year he has taken money from the lawyers of the american bar association. the aba lends it's support, but because the attorney's are allowed to show it as indidvidual donations instead of as an affiliate it is not considered lobbyist money(it is the same thing).

john says the words, but if you look through the smoke you can find complicity. if you check the background on the mellon's you won't say he isn't accepting special interests money. did you know that one of the association's in iowa is represented by edwards ex campaign manager and friend?

More good news for the Obama campaign as Hillary's campaign stagnates. If Hillary is having this much trouble against her Democratic opponents, it does not bode well for her fortunes in a general election. She is extremely vulnerable to the huge smear campaign that Republicans are itching to unload on her if she's on the November ballot. It's fascinating how the Republican candidates love to mention Hillary as a way of turning out voters but they will seldom speak Obama's name.

For a party that is having difficulty mobilizing their base, the GOP's job would become much easier if Hillary were the Democratic nominee. Even if the pro-life "family values" Christian voters don't have their ideal nominee in the general election, they would show up in droves just to vote against her. However, if Obama is on the ballot in November, many of the anti-Hillary conservatives will simply stay home and complain about what the world is coming to. Most Democratic voters are either unaware of this or they are so loyal to Clinton that they turn a blind eye to her general election weaknesses.

A huge chunk of the country has hated Hillary for decades and they always will regardless of what she has done or said since her husband left office. Obama has far less baggage and GOP smear campaign fodder. Some Christian conservatives actually like him because he seems more authentic and coherent when he talks about his faith as opposed to Hillary who sounds mechanical and pre-programmed whenever she tries to talk about anything to do with religion.

You'll have a hard time finding any religious conservative over 35 who could be persuaded vote for Hillary. However, many of them have still not made up their minds about Obama which opens up the possibility for him to win their support in a long election season.

The GOP candidates won't admit it, but they strongly prefer to run against Hillary. She's an easy target and their best hope to keep the White House in Republican hands until 2012.

Bottom line: Clinton could still get the nomination, but she can't win in November. Obama's biggest challenge is beating Hillary in the primaries, but if he does, Obama has the chance to unite the country in favor of true change and win the general election comfortably.

I just returned from a Biden event. I was inspired. Intellectually, I have thought Biden to be the best candidate for a couple of months. But tonight, the emotion followed the logic.

It was, as I said, inspiring. Everything he says makes sense. I learned even more things about him tonight. I met his family, who are all remarkable people.

I walked out of there not only certain that I would caucus for him, but I also walked out of there a precinct captain!

For those of you who have expressed concern about his viability...all I can tell you was that not only was it standing room only but they were in danger of running out of standing room. It was PACKED. The staffers I spoke with told me it has been like that everywhere this last week, and that nearly everyone who leaves, leaves a Biden supporter. After having actually listened to him speak, I can see why.

We talk so much about electability. If Biden gets the nomination, I am completely confident of his ability to get elected.

Oh, by the way, to whoever said his aides are telling people to switch to Obama if Joe is not viable - NO ONE said a thing about that. Everyone believes in his viability. Seeing the crowd tonight, it is very obvious why.

I have watched and listened to this young man, read his books, a nice family man . But not enough experience to be President. We are a nation of huge debt. Our sons',daughters, fathers, husbands,relatives
are dying in a war started on a lie.
It is imperative
America have a president with the strength able to regenerate diplomacy,the ability to leverage our trade deficit,to appoint people with knowledge,and a milllion other knowledgeable courageous acts.
I think Barack Obama is a nice young man but is not the one to assume the responsibly of the president of the United States of America at this time.

I have grown up all my life with the middle class working man. In May of '07 i turned 17 and i was one of the few amoung some of my friends that is eligable to vote in the primary and the election. I went to the Democratic debate in Charelston SC, with my father. I saw first hand what the Democratic Senators had to say, and what the stand for. After the debate i had the privelage of going and seeing the Citidel campus, which at one time was hoping that i could one day be a cadet there. After i graduate this year i plan on joining the Navy and proudly serving my country, all i have to say is that my vote is, always has and always will be for Edwards!!

union members are not lobbyists. and it's obama who put his own foot in his mouth dissing unions after spending all that time wooing them. sour grapes.

edwards supporters don't care much about who obama has working for them (we aren't expecting much in integrity from him anyway), just the high and mighty holier than thou approach to obama's attacks.

if we really want to get down to business, edwards has taken a few thousand dollars of donations from a NC state lobbyist, and has two former lobbyists working for the campaign, one a non-profit i think and the other a grassroots liberal think tank lobby.

while obama has a former bank lobbyist working or worked for his campaign, and i think about two others, all formerly so. he gets donations from places like excelon corp., who owns and operates nuclear power plants (and owns three mile island).

sorry for the lack of links for this info. try google and opensecrets.

so edwards is still on course. it's about breaking the ties between large corporations, etc, not about everyday, hardworking and underrepresented people without the money of those corporations to compete for a voice in DC. and i should know the differences in lobbyists, cuz i live just outside DC.

It may suprise some people here that am writing. As an African who lived in NYC during the 2004 elections, I have followed all the current events with passion.

I love american politics, and the fact that obama is doing 28-30% in the polls in Iowa shows that there is really room for any man of any racial backround to be president of America, as long as he freeborn of this great nation.

I support Obama, he represents hope. Hillarity is just what she is -comedy. I dont like the Clintons.I think Bill is a dubious character, and his wife's steely calculatedness is very scary.America needs someone who can break through the current international polarization of the country. I see in Obama's campaign a restoration, a rennaisance of sort akin to JFK's.

When Obama speaks, he speaks from the heart, you can feel the warmt, the sincerity..and the kindly ambience that's devoid of pretence. Hillarity is too controlled, too predetermined..she is politics as usaul. Its like someone who has swallowed frankenstein!

Hodges is both a federal and state lobbyists so in regard to this article it is right on. As for "funding" the campaign versus getting advice from lobbyists and putting them in important campaign positions Obama is trying to have it both ways. Lastly, while no doubt all campaigns have lobbyists working for them Obama is the one attacking them and hence should be held to a higher standard.

This FirstRead site, and Aswini Anburajan in particular, have frequently written articles that cast HRC in a positive light and BHO in a negative one. That's okay. We see through this bias.

Dems who think HRC will be a stronger candidate against the Repubs this November enjoy having their head in the sand. In 2000, Al Gore didn't even carry his own state. He politely refused the endorsement from WJC because it would have been catastrophic to his campaign. The Repubs had worked very hard to run WJC out of DC and lost that fight by only 5 votes in the Senate; they'd like to finish the job with HRC.

Then, in 2004, even when polls were saying that Gephardt was the only candidate who could beat all Repubs in Nov., on caucus night, we silly Iowa Dems put John Kerry and John Edwards in the #1 and #2 spot. Gephardt finished 4th and dropped out of the race.

So, surprise, surprise, surprise -- John Kerry LOST Iowa in 2004. Why? Because Dems seem to enjoy the pain of losing in November. We've only won two times in 30 years, and if Ross Perot hadn't run in 1992, we would even know the name of Hillary Rodham Clinton today. WJC was a good President. Barack Obama could be a GREAT President, like Lincoln, FDR, or JFK.

John Edwards had a nice crowd last night -- 3,000 to see him AND to attend a FREE concert of John Cougar Mellencamp -- a stacked deck. HRC had about 1,000 so I assume WJC wasn't there -- he's been the big draw time and time again.

While Obama had about 1,500, if he had waited until last night to have Oprah come, he would have had 18,000. Fortunately, he finished the race, alone.

Should Iowa not put Obama up tonight as their number 1, they will show once again that we are not all that good at picking Presidents. The DMR picked HRC -- she came in 7 pts BELOW Obama in their own polls, two weeks later -- so maybe they'll succeed in missing it for 6 cycles in a row.

It's not easy picking a President, apparently. But if one becomes a student of such sites as President Elect dot com, you do gain a little better insight. Most Dems won't work this hard to figure it out.

I'm hopeful will begin to mend our ways tonight, yet I'm still realistic. Some fellow called in on C-Span today and called Robb by the "N" word - twice. He's a sign that there is still a whole lot of ignorance in America. Fortunately, Robb and C-Span have thick skin. So does Barack Obama.

That Obama is even in the hunt is a testimony that in a second 150 years, we might actually get beyond this ridiculous, ignorant, vitriolic hatred based on color of skin, and get back to being the most respected nation in the world. If Obama wins tonight, we might be able to cut that down to 50. Good luck, Senator Barack Obama.

Since when did "Lobbyist" become such a nasty word? What we're really against is the "undue influence" of lobbyists. I think that's what President Obama says, and will do, very well.

You aren't called "the best student I ever had" by Lawrence Tribe, and get to be President of the Harvard Law Review, without being brillian and an exceptional diplomat, simultaneously.

America we're witnessing the campaing of the next Abraham Lincoln. Will we be smart enough to elect him? I think maybe so. Will we protect him well enough to let him help perform a positive transformation on DC? That's the $64,000 question.

He likes people SO much that we have to work much harder to keep him safe, because he wants to trust people. People who have not met him, shaken his hand, sensed his genuineness first hand -- they do not understand.

We do not have to worry about the influence of lobbyists on Barack Obama. See USAspending dot gov for an example of what good works he's already done. Where are HRC's or JE's ethics reform efforts?

Obama has been against *federal* lobbyists, the ones he has the power to affect as President.

A state lobbyist is not the same thing as a federal lobbyist. A state lobbyist tries to get a state to spend money his way, not the federal government. His activity in some podunk state house has zip to do with the federal government. Obama will be President of the federal government.

There are good attorneys and then there are shady attorneys. I'm guessing, from what I know about Obama's ethics reform efforts, that Hodges is one of the good guys - especially if he's serving as a national co-chair!

I am familiar with the data on Barack and John Edwards and they are similar. I don't think Obama is God; I think he is the best choice (although his inspirational qualities offer benefits for national unity that I haven't seen in close to fifty years). The reason Edwards is my second choice is that I feel that both he and Barack are the most committed to influence free campaigns (but I think that both have some room for further improvement).

However, my enthusiasm for Obama lies in the fact that Barack has been among the leaders in Congress against this corrupt incursion into Iraq (along with Dr. Paul and Dennis) and for this reason he is my first choice for the Democratic nomination. Hillary, on the other hand is the Democrat with the worst foreign policy record among the Dems (in addition to a far dirtier record in terms of influence from moneyed interests. She has rec'd more contributions from the military-industrial complex than any candidate on either side. She will never receive my vote as I think that, in positioning herself for the general election, she has abandoned the principles of what the Democratic Party should stand for, in this election. I restate my premise from last night, if your claims that Barack had so compromised his integrity (especially as compared to Hillary), the team Hillary 'smear machine' would have nailed him for it (I'm sure the Jim Hodges bend is their work; Barack has rec'd his endorsement and not his money and the significance lies in political support from white political forces in SC). Still, one poster wrote that Barack should be held to a higher standard (and I think Edwards as well) and I couldn't agree more with that statement. As I said, there is room for improvement - I just think that Obama is committed to that improvement.

When asked about it he states, "I became involved with the hedge funds to see the impact they have on poor people". How long does it take Mr. Edwards? After dems (including myself) worked day and night to get him elected, he appointed many republicans to plum board and commission seats, giving them a head start to defeat him in his reelection campaign. So let me get this straight.. Obama takes state lobbyist money but not federal and that is supposed to impress us?
Let's say he takes money from a state ummmm, let's says COAL lobbyist. Then he sponsors or votes for legislation favorable to the Coal industry including those coal companies in the state if IL. Doesn't the coal lobby in IL and the companies that hired them benefit?
Does Obama think we are all stupid. Or does he just figure that the MSNBC Hillary Hating triumvirate of Timmy, Chrissy and Joey won't talk about anything negative about him anyway, so whatever he does is okay?
