She came in 3rd in Iowa but you guys continue to pretend that this is a two person race. You continue to ignore the 2nd place finisher. What is up with this? Do you cover the Olympics the same way -- ignore the silver medalist while giving massive coverage to the bronze medalists? Even non-Edwards supporters find what you are doing is really creepy. You better watch out because you're going to start to lose your viewers. If Obama's policy positions are pretty similar to Clinton's, what's the change?

Can't speak for anyone else, but its not a wonkish difference I'm looking for. And those who have been on this message board since last winter might recognize some of what I'm about to say.

I think the partisan trench wars are childish. They're disruptive to effective governance and simply immature. If the old names can't be more mature, I'll look for a new name - someone I believe will work toward consensus when possible, will be more open and honest and will project an impression of authenticity.

I suspect this is what other recognize, too. We're looking at Obama because he seems to recognize Republicans aren't evil and independents aren't indecisive flakes. Ironically this time I seem to be joining many others in looking to the younger generation to overcome the childish behavior of the older one.

Sorry if that's too simple, but I think that's it.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Good bye Chris Dodd and Joe Biden
You both brought something to the table.....

Chris Dodd threatened a fillibuster against amnest for telephone companies that violated Americans privacy.
That forced 'lick spittle' Harry Reid to pull back a bill offering that amnesty
Thank you, Chris !!

Joe Biden stated that George Bush should be IMPEACHED if he attacked Iran !!
Joe is right !!

Thank you both

It's a time for CHANGE in American politics
Unfortunately you both ran during the wrong season for politicians with 'REAL' experience (as opposed the the Hillary Clinton 'experience' (sic) )

They probably won't endorse until AFTER Super Tuesday
Presumably Super Tuesday will decide the nomination

But, if Obama were to win New Hampshire AND South Carolina, it would be time for them to endorse

If Obama wins New Hampshire (a long shot) it might be time for Edwards to drop out

Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton is the prohibitive favorite in New Hampshire

With her lead and her organization, there's NO WAY she can lose in her 'Fire wall' state

She knows a loss in both Iowa and New Hampshire would be DEVSATATING for her campaign !!
She'd be view as a LOSER !

Hillary HAS TO WIN NEW HAMPSHIRE
and she HAS TO WIN BIG !!

First thoughts: Debate double-header

It's isn't a time for us to shrink from the "Democratic" principles. hillaryclinton.com

First thoughts: Debate double-header

OBAMA BLITZKRIEG, HILLARY BATTLE, EDWARDS BLEATS.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

If your looking for cheap and hollow words, then your Washington self serving paper hanger will for fill your personal needs.

Stump slogans, promises have no context to serving this nation. They also need to realize that everyone, old and young, is entitled to support the candidate of his or her choice without being insulted or demeaned. Your candidate seems to realize this; I would suggest that as his supporters you do the same.

Making such broad generalizations about "older" voters is so counterproductive; older people could(and do in many cases) do the same thing about the young, but what does that accomplish? For real and meaningful change in government, I think a blend of youthful enthusiasm and experienced judgement are needed. Your candidate says he want to bring the people of this country together; some who post here would do well to remember that.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

sierra, i would suggest to you as an independent myself that the independent vote will carry obama to victory in n.h.

mccain will not get as many independent votes as previously predicted because of obama's freight train.

i can't speak to what republicans will do(as far as crossover to obama) because i am not online with republicans enough to get a consensus and i don't attend the local talking spots that republicans hang out like i do with my fellow independents.

i said that the majority of independents in iowa were going to support obama. no one paid attention. it is going to be a massive push out of n.h. for obama. edwards is going to do better than people think as well.

they keep talking about hillary's organzation. obama has a fine tuned ferrari for an organization and it is getting bigger and sharper. i think dodd and biden will announce right after n.h.

all the lies and hates in the posts here will not change this. most americans want unity and aren't falling for divisive politics. they realize that is why we are in the mess we are in now.

one other thing. anyone interested in some truth go to this site:Understanding Government, a foundation devoted to better government through better reporting.

article by charles peters: judge him by his laws.
washington post.com

this may answer some quesions about obama's experience and substance. only those who wish to find out truth instead of make up untruths will go here.

good luck to all the democratic candidates. for those who will betray your candidate by not voting or turning republican if their candidate doesn't win instead of supporting the democratic party "go now". we don't need any benedict arnolds. please do us that favor.

get in line to support george bush's policy now instead of waiting for the general election.

just my opinion. i'm no expert.

GOOD LUCK TO THE DNC

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Well, I see the true people have come out. True racists are showing their true colors. Just come out and say it, you don't like Barack Obama because he is black. At least be truthful instead of coming up with all of this nonsense.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Hilary Rocks! Thus far, Obama & Clinton have copied Edwards on policy, and Obama, the pretend progressive, has lifted ideas and phrasings directly from Edwards' policy papers and stump speeches. His policy statements are vague, his healthcare plan is not universal, and he has lied about components of Edwards' mandatory healthcare plan.

Just because someone is an eloquent speaker does not give him substance. And my question also about Obama is this: If he is sincere about getting money and special interests out of politics, then why did he not forego private financing and utilize public financing? How can he change a system when the system is paying his way in this election? Don’t let his lofty populist rhetoric fool you; he has accepted as much money as Hillary has from big business interests--from Wall Street, the coal industry, healthcare industry, Exelon (which may explain his willingness to rely on nuclear power as an "alternative" energy source").

Folks, Barack Obama is not what he appears. In 2000, people voted for a guy they thought was "honest" and a regular guy. Don't get conned again. To vote for someone because he gives a good speech is patently ridiculous; you must look beyond into the substance. Edwards has more of it than any other current candidate. Check out his downloadable 80-page policy book on his web site; it's great! www.johnedwards.com
First thoughts: Debate double-header

OBAMA...OBAMA...OBAMA...OBAMA...ALL THE WAY!!!!

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Its all over for hillary!!!! and Edwardss!!! He is up 12 points in the latest polls in New Hampshire, some say he is up by as much as 15 points in New Hampshire. Obama has never been tested or attacked. How will he respond? I want to see more action and less fluffy talk. Will Obama's 12-15 point leadhold up in New hampshire through Tuesday night? I don't think it will.

Tonight, America will watch the debate. I am looking forward to waching it. Will have a house full of at least 20 people, many Independents.

I think many of us know that Obama is a great speaker, but he is the only candidate I know that can talk for an hour, make you feel good, but in reality, say nothing of substance. Where are the details, the concrete details of what this man wants to do for the America? What has he done for America as the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee? Nothing. he hasn't even scheduled a hearing. Why? Where does he stand on the issues? He talks a good game, but I don't see any game plan. Maybe tonight he will outline his plan with specifics. Many people are sick and tired of just hearing the talk from Obama.

Tonight, it is time for him to show that he is more than just a smiling face that talks about change. If we keep hearing "I want change" "I want change" from Obama, with no details of what that change is, or how he specifically wants to bring about that change, then what do we have, America? A candidate for the Presidency that can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk when it comes to putting forth real solutions to solve the real problems facing America.

America is watching Obama. Let's see what he is able to deliver in the debate without his telepromter and speech writers holding his hand.

Iowa picks corn, the rest of America, picks a President.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

When people are desperate, they go on offensive--like Hillary. This concerns me greatly. Yes, I believe that the news media has a big affect on elections. I realize that these two candidates are from different parties, but it is as if the news media has already decided that Obama will win the Democratic Nomination for the President of the United States and Huckabee will win the Republican Nomination.

I realized that there are biases and prejudices in all walks of life, I just wished this country and all form of the media would put these differences aside.

This country is in need of a great leader, not just a leader but a great one. CHANGE is what we need. It is very obvious that the path we are currently on is not the correct one. We need new ideas and approaches to the problems we are facing today. The people of Iowa got the right idea and in my opinion they clearly know what's going on and the challenges ahead.

We need a Great Leader not a Great Politician and there is a difference. If you don't know what that is by now, then God Help You.

Douglas

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Dot - good point, and obviously I wasn't clear. I wasn't criticizing older voters. I was criticizing the older Washington set. That's where the childish trench warriors are.

I fully expect there are a lot of older voters who also want a president that doesn't instinctively take us back into those partisan trenches. And if I have to go to the younger candidate over the older one to find that maturity, so be it. I hope every voter older than me (I ain't so young myself) feels the same way.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Hillycrats of America: That is an outrageous, bigoted remark. Who do they think they are? If they are going to have a debate they should at least give everyone a fair shot. Now we have to watch as the "top" candidates, aka the candidates that the big media supports, talk about "change" that they will never follow through with. If the media would give everyone a fair shot more people would know people like Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.

Look at what Fox News is doing excluding Ron Paul, the only true Republican, shame on them. All they care about is supporting the rest of the Republican field which is full of hypocrites.

My biggest problem is that no one cares. Why aren't people boycotting and pointing out the injustices of the mass media. They are bias and controlling the outcome of the elections. The very thing that drew the Clintons to politic so many years ago. To have a man judged based on the content of his charachter not the color of his skin.

Mayor Bloomgerg is telling his friends that if Obama wins he will not run. The reason, he does not want to been seen as retarding progress, and keeping the first African-American from becoming president.

This is what the Clintons risk doing, by fighting against a core principle of the Democratic party they appear petty an power hungry. How can they fight against the very thing they claim to have fought 40 years for, to have a black man afforded the opportunity to seek the presidency of the United States?

The more they fight against the Obama movement, the more they appear like the same people who told Dr. King to slow down, who told Dr. King that America was not ready for the type of equality he sought. THe very people who told Dr. King to wait till next time. They appear to be on the wrong side if history, to not understand the 'fierce urgency of now' A terrible place for their legacy to end.

The Clintons may be better off dropping out sooner rather than later, and get behind the movement. Otherwise even if they win the nomination they will end up doing a disservice to the very movement tht drew them to politics in the first place.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Hillycrats - maybe you should actually address the issues and not be soooo stupid

Huey Lee -- Great the you think "Hilary Rocks". Obama won Iowa, and if Hillary wins NH, why would that NEGATE OBAMA'S WIN IN IOWA?? Seems to me they would be TIED at that point - just as Bush and McCain were in 2000, when Bush won Iowa and McCain won NH. The contest would then move on to South Carolina, Nevada, etc.

Also, the latest poll by "Rasmussen" that is the only one taken AFTER IOWA shows Obama with a 10 point lead over Hillary - 37% to 27%. Pretty good results! Well done!

And the last Zogby poll right before Iowa had the ORDER correct, showing Obama winning, Edwards second, and Hillary coming in third. Look at the condition of our country and the presidency; do any one person think that the "old school" candidates can do any better than whats been already done? It is going to take a fresh mind and fresh approach to politics in order to get this country back together again. I don't see the logic of placing "old school" politicians in the presidency to dwindle down economics within the next four years with dead, old school politics. What good is yesterdays experience when we are dealing with many "NEW" economic issues today? How are the "old school" politicians suppose to swing it? Obama appears to be the only candidate that seems to realize the state of economy and politics the country is in and realizes that it will take a fresh new approach for change in order to deal with it. I like Hillary and went through the roof when Bill made president however, that WAS yesterday and today is today. Things are different now and I don't see where experience from over 8 years ago benefits the country today. In my opinion, so far, the other candidates speak in the sense of "micro-managing" washington and not addressing problems as a complete system or process. Obama is the only candidate that speaks in term of complete resolution to many of our problems, he's been most consistant and I like the fact that he stands by his opinion on things such as the war. He didn't vote in favor of it in the beginning and morally, he stood strong by his decision and purpose up to today. If that isn't an independent and strong motion of leadership then I don't know what is! No other candidate has taken this type of strong position; not even Hillary! I like a candidate that can stand behind their views and do so with a firm position. This is a candidate that will get things done and not so easily be persuaded to abandone purpose, idea or change. Wishbone will no longer do; it is time to have a condidate in the house that has Backbone! Unlike Bush, a person that has a mind and think for themself and have a view, opinion or firm decision about situations. One that will be persistant to get things done. I don't know if I can trust a president that makes excuses as to why they voted in favor of an unjustified war; like they don't have a voice of their own... And the other candidates have not done a good job answering that question... not even Hillary.

"The War"
Are we truly that strong? Are we truly winning? Every week you hear about more american solders being killed in Iraq from suicide attempts and strategic attacks. People, this is a different type of war and America is NOT exempt from being attacked by it! Yes we may have a very strong military but, how do you fight an enemy that blends in with any and every John Doe? Sometimes negotiation and dialogue is imperitive; especially when you are EXTREMELY vulnerable! To threaten a terrorist does nothing more than create more terrorism! For example, if a person wanted to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff would you go up to them and tell them to jump? Many americans probably would but, I would imagine that you would try to get the person to understand the value of life as NOT to jump. Well, we can't always negotiate with countries by threatening them! America can sometimes be notorious for a very blunt or harrassing approach to situations. That doesn't help resolve the issue, it helps to escalate the problem! We need a fresh new approach to these problems. Not the approach we have today.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

I just want to urge everyone to get the FACTS on each candidate before casting a vote. I had my vote set for Obama until I read about his positions on important issues...I disagree with almost ALL of his positions. He is, however, very personable (just like Bush) and very smart.

Don't vote on color or gender...vote on a person's morals and records!

Obama really disappointed me...almost to the point where I was angry about his positions (and he didn't do anything other than be who he is - AND WILL BE IF ELECTED PRESIDENT).

GET THE FACTS AMERICA. Don't rely on the media...it cannot be trusted. Inform yourself because ignorance is not your friend.
First thoughts: Debate double-header

The latest Rasmussen poll taken AFTER IOWA, shows OBAMA LEADING HILLARY BY TEN POINTS!!

Obama has 37% to Hillary's 27%!

That's what I call a BOUNCE!!

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Obama DOES have the experience necessary to enact change. Real leaders bring people together to work up a plan together and that's what he talks about. Bringing everyone to the table while being the leader. That's what the great leaders do. Not just come with their idea that they cram down others throats. That's not leadership. Great leaders get the most out of those around them to all work for the common good. We need someone like him with vision and good judgement. Something he has demonstated over and over again which much of Washington rarely does. A different way of seeing things and working is what we desperately need. For those using the Hussain pitch, shame on you. There's no place her for that. Dialogue is where it's at, not name calling.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

In his earlier stump speeches, Senator Obama did get into more specifics, but the professorial lecture tended to bore people.

As far as the change that Obama is going to bring, I would reference conservative columnist David Brooks of the NY Times, who notes that the change that Obama is offering is a change from the old categorizations of the Baby Boomer generation that have led to polarization and partisanship in our government. This may seem nebulous to some, but if you think about it, it is actually quite profound. Unfortunately it's something that can't be legislated, can't be quantified in policy points. It requires leadership, vision, and integrity, which is the metapoint that Senator Obama is promulgating, I believe.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Amazing how many people make racist comments here.

Obama had a Muslim father. Big deal! How many of you here know a Muslim? Many that I know love this country and don't show any signs of being a terrorist.
As for the Middle East, the West has played it's hand in the troubles there. In Iran, the U.S. put the Shah in power. In Iraq, the U.S. supplied Saddam with weapons to fight Iran. In Afganistan, the U.S. worked with Osama Bin Ladin so he could help defeat the Soviets. We support Isreal because their money is in the pockets of our elected officials. Then there's the Saudi's where the U.S. turn away from their issues because of OIL. The U.S. is in Iraq now because of OIL. So tell me, what were the religions of the people in office over the last 60 years who have put this county to this point?

Who ever is voted in, I hope they help the world rather than help ruin it. Edwards should just switch parties now, he is doing more damage to the Democratic party than Rove ever did.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Obama seems to dull to ever be able to make serious change like he says. He looked like he was asleep. I just don't see what has people so fired up about him? I suppose we could go from the dumbest president ever to the dullest. I still like John Edwards! He just seems ready to go. I stopped watching CNN or for that matter any news channel 5 years ago.
Obama cannot win, Hillary we have to wait and watch but One thing I am sure of -30% of americans are going to vote for either Romney or Huckabee. You cannot get these folks to vote for a democrat. That leaves 40% of white folk + 30% of others to vote democrat. Now it is safe to say that the winner is not going to get more than 45% of the vote. 30% is guaranteed for the Dems. That leaves 40% of the white folk with the either staying the course or looking for change. I doubt if the white folk have been affected enough by this war to affect that change. So I predict the Huckster or Romney as the next president.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

People stop being stupid Obama is not a sleeper agent or a Muslim. What he represents is the younger generation 18-39 view of our country. Yes Clinton may have 36 years of service as a politician, and to that I say good job. However 36 years of politics is what got America in this mess to begin with. The only reason that I am voting for Obama is because he is young, stick to his idea of party unification and limits his negative ad campaign. If there was a tree preaching his ideas I would vote for it. I think that the theme here is it does not take a rocket scientist to run the country (Bush) just some one that will hear the people and stop the downward spiral that we are in. It's time for old government to move to Florida for the winter and let the young bloods rule.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

i'm flat out glad to see the youth of this country take back their country! the kids of today are voting, this year this time, for THEIR future, plus our "old foggey's" future. i'm guessing they are realizing, from watching we baby-boomers care for our aging parents, that they too will one day be in our shoes and they want it better than we have it now. i am a 51-year-old white female (registered democrat since day one) and i too will be voting FOR Obama.

p.s. i turned off to Hillary a long time ago. she sent out a mailing requesting donations toward her "senate" race. well, i live in maryland and why would someone running for a new york senate seat be wanting to raise funds from maryland residents?

First thoughts: Debate double-header

I lived in Obama state senate district for 6 years, he did nothing. He has done nothing as our US Senator, but run for President. He has never had a serious opponent (he beat Alan Keys). I enjoy his speeches too. But, that is all it is TALK no action. Illinois is losing jobs and healthcare our budget is a joke. There is no Hope in Illinois our Senate and House leaders don't speak to each other. Thankfully we have Dick Durbin or we would be in more trouble than we are now.
On bringing people together, Obama has single handly divided people in his orginal district. He ran against Bobby Rush a democrate. He is all out for power and to enrich his elite friends.
You guys keep this up and we will be saying President McCain. The media is not looking into him, but I bet the Republicans are.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

I really could not believe Edwards last night.

Dot, Illinois (Sent Saturday, January 05, 2008 1:45 P
__________________________________________________
Dot you are correct, we need more than the unseasoned kids to decide who will be president.
Be careful with that troll and plant Paul, he is no Democrat and claims to be all things to all candidates. He sometimes hears things he may just tell you about but then coyly try to say well maybe not but he suspects or feels, he has a gut feeling but can't say for sure. He is a true gossip girl!.. He is soooo undecided and has no pick for a candidate. He loves to spew the garbage with jerry/cc and D Andres the other TX scumbag.

First thoughts: Debate double-header

To my fellow Americans:

Please help me understand. Many candidates are battling and debating their "experience." If none of them actually functioned as the United States President, how do ANYONE (including Hillary) justify their "experience?" Hillary is the only candidate that came close; as the "first lady" (NOT the President). And this was as far back as the Rock Ages!! Does that qualify as "experience?" More like delusions of grandeur. Now stay focused with me. I am sure every American knows that the only way to gain experience to be the President is to BE the President. When I look at all of the candidates, I see potentials in several and some more than others. I don't think a few years as the first lady over 8 years ago exactly makes Hillary capable to run the nation. Does that mean any candidate is any more qualified as her? No.. But it does mean that we should recognize that NONE of these candidates have functioned in the role of the United States President and none of them are any more qualified than the next. No offense towards Hillary; I did vote for Bill when he ran and I think he did a wonderful job as president but I don't think Hillary should use Bills experience as the United States President to justify "brownie points" to make herself look good. If she wants to be the president then she should be viewed in all truth as any other candidate with no more experience than any other candidate. I don't see how people are easily blinded by this smoke screen. Bill is standing BESIDE Hillary; he is not on the ticket. I don't see how HIS experience all of a sudden makes Hillary the most experienced candidate on the ticket. If the american people do NOT understand the role of "first lady," maybe you ought do a little history lesson and research the responsibilities of the American President. You may be surprised to know that with all of the President's advisors, department leaders, etc, there is no mention of associating graphical presidential information with the "first lady." In fact, the presidency is designed to be operated by a single figure head; spouse is NOT a mandatory. And the president will still have all necessary resources to run this country. How does a position of "first lady" qualify Hillary's experience as the United States President? On that note, I suggest the american people to make their decisions based on honesty and truth, possibility and potential; NOT experience because experience as the President can ONLY be obtained as the President. Avoid smoke screens and unrealistic statements like "I have 35 years experience"; Doing WHAT?? Being the first lady? Anyone or at least everyone should know that advisors are there for the president to run the country; first lady is not necessary.... What experience and from where? Wake up America and choose the most honest, loyal, truthful, candidate that shows the greatest potential to do open door politics. Obama 08!!

First thoughts: Debate double-header

What is the difference between having "potential" and having "experience"??

Potential: means you may not know everything about the job but, have the abilities that suggest your capability of doing the job.

Experience: comes with DOING the job. People, do remember that NONE of these candidates have former experience in being the United States President. Now try to focus on "POTENTIAL." Potential cannot so easily be weighed on what was accomplished as a "senator" because we ALL know that being a senator is oceans different than being the President. We need an honest, loyal, committed leader. We need a leader for change but also make themselves aware of the genuine needs of the American public. Not a leader that moves only on their selfish ideas. Personal and selfish agenda's should be easily discredited. Open your eyes! Don't be so easily brought on the "experience" phrases and the idle promises. This country and economy is hurting and we don't need the ongoing repeats of "old" politics.

Did John F. Kennedy have a lot of experience to become the American President? NO! He barely had the attention span to keep himself awake in meetings. That did NOT stop him from going forward to become one of the most significant Presidents in the history of the United States and made MANY significant changes! When I hear Barak Obama, I hear a voice that reminds me of the genuine character of John F. Kennedy; a President that didn't just go forward to become the President but, became a president that changed the lives of Americans for years to follow.

Barak Obama is appropriate for the time, age and issues we are dealing with. He comes accross as the new age JFK. Yes there were many issues that were outstanding when John F. Kennedy took office as well; did he do half bad? NO! He did EXCELLENT!! Have faith people. This is NOT the first time we are looking at significant change. Sometimes true change appears to be hard but on the end, we always benefited greatly. Open your ears and listen and do remember that the honesty and nobility of a character is 10 times more important than their agenda; agenda's can be rewritten but good morals can be hard to change or come by...

For example, what happens when a candidate comes into hard times trying to push one of those "promises" you are hearing now? I hope you realize that their moral character will say a lot about how they will stand against the bills and the fights to get things done for you. I will give Obama one thing; he stands firm behind what he believes in and he doesn't fall so easily. His objection to the war was strong as a senator and I am truly amazed that he has NOT changed his firm stand on the issue and is just as candid about it today. I like a person that can be honest and take an unmovable stand on issues until change is inevitable. I have NOT seen that sort of strength in any of the other candidates and from much of any president since John F. Kennedy. A fresh up-to-date mind, sound morals and a firm foot.

As far as experience, NO ONE can claim fame to experience working in a capacity they haven't worked before! They ALL are a bit inexperienced at being the United States President. Question is, who shows the most strength, values, loyalty and potential to get through it???

First thoughts: Debate double-header

Just to set the record straight, Alan Keyes was campaigning in Iowa from December 27 through the caucuses. You can't be blamed for not knowing that. The media refused to tell you.
