Obama leads among men, 42%-30%, and by a similar margin, Clinton leads among women, 47%-34%. This is a real difference from Iowa, where Obama actually BEAT Clinton among women.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

If the numbers hold up and Obama loses or wins only slightly, then I must put into writing what I’ve told friends ever since Hillary teared up.

This was orchestrated, and I have no doubt Bill was behind it.

Not only did the media attack Hillary for her eyes welling, but in households around NH, husbands were telling their wives “this is why a woman can’t be President,” or “see, women can’t help but cry all the time.”

And that is why Hillary is up by 12-points with women in NH as opposed to five down in Iowa.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

I have not seen the internal numbers but I venture to say that Chuck Todd was correct of 1 thing, the "independents" were oversampled but it looks like it was in the Dems polls not in the Rep ones. What was the difference? Her weeping? Nope. The fact that she's popular with women? Let's get real. It was the former president. Specifically, it was the “Fairy Tale” speech given by Bill, a monstrosity which may go down in history as having worsted both the “Checkers” and “You Won’t Have Nixon to Kick Around Anymore” speeches by Tricky Dick. A new low in American politics. A series of lies and distortions - which he knew, by the way - followed by the tag line (for those of you familiar with advertising), “A Fairy Tale.” So, I hope you’ll forgive a former Bill Clinton fan for saying that the aspiring First Husband has committed the gravest of sins, and sunk far below any former president in history. For, as a former president, he must’ve known that his first priority was the dignity of the office he once held; his second, his own legacy; and his last, any personal, post-presidential goals. Some of us - even those of us (like me) who would’ve voted for a nominated Hillary in November - will remember this. And we will cast our ballot for anyone other than the Senator from New York.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Suck it up, Chris Matthews. Little

I think the outcome and MSNBC's comment on the "gender divide" underscores a more important and neglected reality. That is, the media establishment is unprepared to interprete an election process pitting a female against a male. The inaccuracy of media pundits over the past 48 hours reflects more than a few limitations of media coverage during this "change" era in politics. That is, (1) the ongoing democartic race (Hillary's "fall") has been interpreted with respect to past races- which do not provide a precedence for a male/female standoff and (2) major networks and cable channels use more males than females for a greater proprtion of televised time when reporting and interpreting the ongoing polls/results. This affects, I believe the accuracy and levity of interpretations. why did we hear so much about Hillary's aggression when every candidate, over the course of the primary challenge so far, has shown more?

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Go Hillary! Jen & Aunt Ter are rooting for you in FL...

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Ain't that America!? At least the press doesn't have a clue. I'm glad to see some contention. Trial by fire is good practice for a future Prez.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

'Suck it up, Chris Matthews. At the slightest hint of a show of tiredness (read: weakness) on her part, supposedly "objective" journalists roll out the negativity smear machine in a way that they never do for any of the male candidates. There IS a gender divide here, folks, but it's not just among the voters. It's among the overwhelmingly male members of the media who don't know how to report on a woman presidential candidate. Here's a hint, guys: do it just like you report on the male candidates.

What gave the victory to Mrs. Clinton in New Hampshire was all the gratuitous negative spew being dumped on her by Messrs. Obama and Edwards, and by the media with their puffed-up pundits. Criticism of Mrs. Clinton has gone far beyond the reasonable and borders on a witch hunt. That is why as long as women see one of their own being mocked, flogged and crucified in the public square, they will flock to her side to defend her -- with their votes.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Are there nothing but old, white women in NH?

WTF?

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Gender absolutely is a factor. Check out the three guys on the left side of your screen who are responsible for this content (Political Director, Deputy Political Director, and Political Researcher who wrote this piece). All WHITE MEN. Also, it should be said that the drama of media journalists recently has become too much part of the process. When one candidate was up in the polls, a huge sway of opinion followed. It was like the Titanic... Given that the democractic primaries are unprecedented with an African-american and a woman running... the media opinion seems irrelevant in its extremes and its inaccuracy. First, we were the only ones that held signs from 8AM to 7PM at many of the polls where voters were still making up their minds as we greeted them. Volunteers for all other candidates left their signs in the snow and people coming to the polls could see that Hillary's supporters were going to go the distance.

Secondly, Senator Obama during the debate on Saturday night stressed that he was going to listen to people, but what the people saw for the next 48 hours was that Hillary was the candidate willing to sit and listen to people and Barack was going to deliver more speeches at people - a one way communication. This emphasized what every older woman knows-while you may love to hear the words, you have to watch the behavior because that will tell you when you're hearing the truth.

Third, everyone knows that our beloved New England Patriots will not send out their least experienced players as they battle for the next Superbowl title and neither will the Democrats in this Presidential race. Hillary did a great job of contrasting her differences in the last debate and not running away from her own experiences in answering the call for change from Edwards and Obama.

And finally, when it comes to change...well every woman knows that every MOM in America has a little jar or box or drawer of "change", a little something that she has put away sometimes for years and years. And while she may not often or ever go to that secret place for herself she will break out the "change" when those she loves need it most...and Hillary knows America need it now.
The Clinton-Obama gender divide

well Hillary go ahead and be the first women president of our country

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Congratulations Hillary! The country needs a smart, wise woman.

Bobbi J., Bremerton, WA

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

I don't understand all the black/white conflict with Obama. After all, he's both.
I'm at a greater loss understanding the gender thing. Hillary is Bill, was, is, and shall ever be.
He always was a charmer.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Sen. But that turned out to be complete foolishness! If anything, Clinton's win tonight confirms that this is a two person race between Obama and Clinton. Now we can say for certain that Super Tuesday will deliver the final verdict.

As for the GOP, I can totally see McCain taking center stage at the convention. The party would really do themselves a favor if they selected him --sure he sides with Bush, and his postions have some conservatives angry --but he is really the most electable. That being said, I think it would be boring if he won...we need some new blood. I don't care if Bush's approval shoots up to say 50% come Nov. (good luck with that)

I'm rooting for Obama now, but I orinally wanted Richardson to win. I disagree with some who say Clinton will put the Dems into the red if she the nominee; we can't predict that. But it would be great if we could elet someone who is fresh. And might I add thatI was very shock by former president Bill Clinton's remarks about Obama's "fairy tail" cmapaign. He reflected a tone as if he was talking to Ken Starr, not one of his own! Pretty low for Bill...

If it is infact Obama, I hope the srutiny of a national campaign will force him to tell us where he stands on the issues. Face it, we still don't know the guy. Come up with some comprehensive plan we can believe in, otherwise, a more experience candidate will more than likely win the election in Nov.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

Like another women said, I vote Obama because he has vision and motivates. Forget the idea that women/feminists can be counted on for Hillary. Many of us "older women" are feminists...the only women VP's or directors. The brains that got us into boardrooms are the brains that may disagree with Hillary's positions. I am not against a woman president, but I am not for Hillary. That's not bias, it's rational and individual thinking. She is not entitled to votes based on her gender any more than she is to be excluded on that basis. In all, I simply don't believe Hillary is electable and I feel that our country needs to switch parties.
The fiscal conservatives have plunged us into debt, the "experienced in foreign relations" have plunged us into war and international disdain, the traditional Republican relationship with business has cost us jobs, tax revenue and environmental damage. If all Hillary's experience made her vote for that war, I doubt her judgement. If it was political expediency, I doubt her fitness.
We do need leaders of courage and vision, like Jefferson, Hancock, Franklin and Adams. They didn't have more experience in governance than George III; they just had a better vision and the courage to stand for it. Now that we have another "King" George dismantling our Constitution, we need leaders like that. Being male shouldn't count against them. Hey, any chance we can resurrect Harry Truman? Or Harriet, if she can give-em-hell like her forebear.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

R. Because she cried? Because the 'men' pounced on her? TV women were saying there was a double standard because male politicains can cry, but women can't. Thats not the arguement. For a society of educated and "enlightened" people, this is really so disappointing. What is wrong with being a woman, is it a sin or a disadvantage to have been a former first lady? If you truly believe that all are born equal, what does the colour of a man's skin have to do with his abilities. America will always have problems of divisiveness and retardation because they essentially do not understand what the real issues are. All the so called experts had the Senator buried a 6:00 PM and are now eating crow at 11:00 PM. It scares the hell out of Corporate America that woman can be president. This is the 21st century, get over it. Senator Obama is an impressive personality, that in time, will be a great leader & president. 2016 looks like a realistic timeline. Without the independant vote it wouldn't have been a close race in N.H.. Also believe the TV media folks, in general, are to full of themselves. They think we are stupid and hang on their their every word, opinion and assessment. They put on their slacks and panty hose like everyone else. It's all about their so called power trips. She says she will take care of them, but HOW?!

2) She does NOT have 35 years of experience what so ever, other then her term as Senator of New York. Being married to a Governor and President does not mean you have experience in leading or making decisions. It is unfair to try and ride the wings of Bill Clinton's presidency into the White House.

3) Do you really want another 4-8 years of Clintons? The trend will continue... Bush Clinton, Bush, Clinton. Then what? Laura Clinton?

4) Hillary has extreme animosity towards her Republican peers. What will this get done in Washington?

5) These recent orchestrated events are embarrasing to the American people. I'm not being sexist, but it was ridiculous that she played the "crying woman" card.

6) She can't get things done!!! Her initiative as First Lady was to reform health care. LOOK WHERE IT IS TODAY!

7) She isn't trustworthy.

I beg you America, do not vote for Hillary Clinton. She has an enormous personal agenda, such as JUST BEING ELECTED. Mr. Obama is a respectable clear-headed candidate who truly cares about this country (without crying about it).

Good Luck Barack.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

I'm happy clinton and McCain won, because Obama is to young to run our country he does not have the experience and the know how.People like him cause he is young, well they better think about it very hard cause we are going to be in a bigger fix than we are now. thank you Texas girl

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

For those thinking Obama is the best choice for the Democrat nominee, you need to check his record. Especially, the different items he did not give a yes/no vote for. 166 to be exact. While some things might seem small, some do concern me. No vote towards prohibiting money for groups that perform abortions. As a woman, being pro-choice, not taking a stand on that is upsetting to me. On agriculture bills, his only yes vote, to put a cap on farm subsidies. Those having to do with bioenergy, an income tax cap for farm subsidies, and gov sponsored farm insurance, no vote. A large number of no votes for domestic budget issues, but proposed and had a bill passed to give $56 million to the country of Congo. No vote on a bill implementing the 9/11 commision recommendations, no vote for Iraq withdrawl amendment. Some of you want "change" or experience? I'll take Hillary's experience of proving she fights for the people like she did in Arkansa, just like she fought (even though it failed) to get universal health coverage as first lady. But, well SCHIP is HER idea, and regardless of the president vetos, it was her creation. I'm part of the younger voters, but I want someone who can take a stand whether I agree or not. Not someone who gives a "no vote" to some very important issues.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

A VOTE FOR ANYONE BUT CLINTON WILL BE A FUTURE VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN! The reason Obama lost in NH when he was so much in front in the polls is racism. The Tom Bradley effect from CA in 1982 .... Bradley was 9 to 10 % ahead in the final polls to become Governor but lost narrowly. White people lie to pollsters and even exit pollsters about their true intentions when it comes to voting for a person of color. In Iowa it was an open caucus, no hiding your racism behind a curtain ...in NH it was easy to hide one's bias .... A sad day still in America.

The Clinton-Obama gender divide

America sometimes tends to elect a president who is articulate, good looking & apparently nice, eg George Bush.
