Do you think that all the powers that be in DC are going to hang up there hats and go home if Obama becomes president, UNLIKELY. Although many argue she is a part of the machine, and rightfully so, she certainly knows how it works and can tinker with it. Obama's vision is a bit fairytale like and unrealistic, and although in an ideal world, his vision would come to fruition, we all know that this is the real world and I say lets hand it over to someone who knows hows washington works, but who also sees the need for change.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Edwards spoke the least and said the most. I just want to say how bad Russert and Williams were as moderators. I don't think they should be allowed to be moderators anymore. The first 40 minutes was a waste of time. As for Chris Matthews fawning over Hillary after the debate. Please. Just because you got the memo that you are sexist, doesn't mean you need to go overboard with praise for her. This race is still close and once again, Matthews decides he is going to predict who wins the nomination after 3 states. Hasn't he learned anything?

Hillary was awesome. She knew the issues and had indepth answers and solutions to the problems Americans face. I think the debate did show that all the Democrats are on the same page on Iraq despite the MSN article that said they were sparing over Iraq. I didn't see that at all. There really is very few differences in the three candidates. I just thought her experience really showed. I do want to point out to Obama that Social Security isn't taxed, so you can't give tax relief to people receiving it.

Either way, Hillary, Edwards,or Obama, the Dems will win in November.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

With the Clinton's being called racists and using their talk to tick off the African American vote, i can see why they would ask for a truce. They played the race card and it backfired on them, now they are asking to play nice. This should last for a day....

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Is Hillary trying to scare me into voting for her? I enjoyed the Las Vegas debate more than any of them, because the three candidates were civil to one another. I appreciated their ability to treat each other with respect and kindness and still deliver their individual messages without upsetting and confusing and even infuriating the viewers.
Although I felt it was clear that Hillary proved herself clearly the leader we need in this debate, I will say that Sen. Obama and Sen. Edwards gathered respect last night in a clearer playing field of positive demeanor and unity in respect.
It was VERY NICE TO SEE NO COMBATITIVENESS in a world already fighting out in the field. It was nice to see RESPECT and DECENCY allow a viewer to see who they think is the right candidate and respect the position, however different, of the others.
I now genuinely feel that they are all three very fine people who believe strongly in their own way in what is to come and how.
I applaud the media for FINALLY ASSISTING IN DECENCY and get the muddied air clear so we can all focus and make our judgments.
Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

I find very interesting Hillary's characterizing the role of POTUS as that of "Chief Executive Officer". I think its a BIG mistake.

Seems to me this was President Carter's claim as well. At meetings with members of Congress, Carter was clearly in command of the facts and figures --- so clearly in command of them that he frequently failed to remember the true purpose of the meeting. In other words, he was caught up in the minutiae of government.

What we clearly need is a President who is formulating vision and direction for this nation and providing the leadership to take us there. I was irritated with Edwards for just repeating his usual lines, but if people are hearing him for the first time, they might be more impressed. Also, the more I listened to him the more I realized I agree more with his positions than with the others, for instance that the perception we are occupiers in Iraq is very dangerous. I think Edwards really "gets" it, which is why I sent him money not too long ago. Still, I love Obama, I think his intelligence is very deep and insightful and he will truly grow in office. To put it in business terms, he's saying a president needs to be like a chairman of the board more than like a chief operating officer. I think history supports this statement.

In modern history, President Carter was heavily criticized for being too involved in bureaucratic processes below his office. Those critics say it slowed his ability to respond to issues across the board, because once a president starts micromanaging, bureaucratic managers tend to wait for micromanaging on other issues.

This criticism also was directed toward President Clinton for the first 18 months of his presidency. It ended when he replaced his chief of staff, and Leon Panetta is credited for getting Bill Clinton out of micromanagement mode.

The thing to remember is the executive branch is huge. Its probably too large with too many layers of management to ever function efficiently, but that is what it is. Most people inside the executive branch are civil servants, who continue working from one administration to the next, regardless of party affiliation. These people don't need a president to tell them how to do their jobs. They need upper management to set priorities and goals, and that management comes from the president's appointees (who presumably are getting their broader priorities and goals from the White House), and then they need intermediate management (again mostly at the civil servant level) to oversee daily operations.

In a sense, this is why the experience question is irrelevant. A president doesn't keep the trains running on time. He tells his administration where he wants the trains to go, and they make it happen. Judgment is much more important than experience. Probably the most important acts of judgment most presidents ever do is determining which appointments to make and from whom to receive advice.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

All this who is more qualified reminds me that I cast my first vote at21 for Truman. He inherited the presidency suddenly on FDR'S death and was clueless to that office even to having the atom bomb. The times were against him but he saved this nation in war and peace. Obama said he believes that the job is about ‘having a vision for where the country needs to go’ rather than ensuring the ‘paperwork is being shuffled effectively.’

Clinton said. ‘But I think you have to be able to manage and run the bureaucracy.’”]

--Finally, people and the campaigns are waking up to the true distinctions between the campaigns (because really isn't necessarily policy). These two candidates have flagrantly different styles and approaches to problems.

--I think the comparison between Barack Obama and George W. Bush and the style of government is a fair comparison. They are both men of ideals and visionary. But that is where they diverge. B.H. Obama seems to have an uncanny abilitiy to sift through the bureaucracy and make the wise policy decision--he actually uses his advisors as a strength. And that is where his wisdom and his judgment comes from. For me, that's a positive.

--Furthermore, drawing out the comparision, that would make Hillary Rodham Clinton more like Dick ... Dick ... ahhh ... Richard Cheney!!! Dick Cheney is the detail guy, he's the guy who can manage the bureaucracy. So the question is, would we be better off with Dick Cheney as President?

--On a final note, I am merely comparing leadership styles. It would be foolish to compare policy or judgment for either Clinton or Obama to Dick and George.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Here is a very serious issue for Barak Obama, and if you disagree please post why. Jeremiah Wright, the pastor of Obama's United Trinity Church of Christ honored Farrakhan just last month?

Farrakhan has repeatedly made hate-filled statements targeting Jews, whites, America, and homosexuals. He has called whites “blue-eyed devils” and the “anti-Christ.” He has described Jews as “bloodsuckers” who control the government, the media, and some black organizations.
Do you know some of these satanic Jews have taken over BET [the Black Entertainment Network]?” Farrakhan said in a speech on Nov. 11, 2007.
The month( Dec. 2007) after that speech, Obama’s minister and friend, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. and his Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, honored Farrakhan at a gala, bestowing on him its Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer award.
This is serious business and Senator Clinton would not associate with Farrakhan or Jeremiah Wright yet
Obama was married by him and his kids baptized by him.
How does this help divisiveness in America?
Ron Kessler from the Washington Insider wrote the article - go here to read it http://www.newsmax.com/kessler/obama_wright_farrakhan/2008/01/14/64332.html

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Wendy from PA, in case you didnt know it, The GOP has candidates right now vying for the presidency. He seems to me to take a lot of time to basically say one thing: I will bring the country together. We are supposed to take this on faith. Hillary also talks a lot, is articulate and is the ultimate insider. Her message boils down to I know how to run the government and I will do it like Bill did. In contrast, Edwards speaks concisely, makes his points clearly, and lets you know exactly where he stands. His message is about the need to correct the course that America has drifted onto over a period of years. Hillary Clinton and Obama copy his lines, but I don't think either of them really get it. Neither do a lot of the pundits.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Hillary has already won the Presidency. Believe me, we don't want a president who is trying to micro- manage the bureaucracy! We want a president who will, as Obama said, bring together the best and brightest to tackle and solve these enormous issues facing us. We want a leader who will inspire us to come together for the common good. We want a president who will have good judgment and reasoning who will not lead us into a war like Iraq. To me, Barack Obama will make a truly great president. He will be able to set an agenda to deal with issues like health care - and then be able to actually effect real CHANGE by being able to bring divergent sides together (political, medical, etc.) in a way that has not been possible for decades. THAT is what is SO EXCITING about BARACK OBAMA!! You get the feeling that we have the opportunity to actually GET SOME THINGS DONE for the COMMON GOOD!! Please read with an open mind.

Hillary and MLK
By JOHN MCWHORTER
January 16, 2008; Page A12 (Wall Street Journal)

There are many people in our great land aggrieved over the idea that Hillary Clinton thinks Martin Luther King Jr. was not the hero of the civil rights movement.

This idea seems so illogical that the only way to understand it is to approach it as a puzzle. After all, why would a white person running for president in 2008 dismiss the legacy of King near his birthday, which is celebrated as a national holiday, and right before a primary in a state with a large black vote?

To do such a thing would suggest inability to tie one's shoes. Let's imagine that in private Sen. Clinton thought little of King, which is vastly unlikely for someone of her background. Still, the puzzle remains: Why would she, an intelligent person, say it in public?

Yet there she was on "Meet the Press" Sunday, having to defend herself for simply saying that while King laid the groundwork (which she acknowledged), another part of the civil rights revolution was Lyndon B. Johnson's masterful stewardship of the relevant legislation through Congress. She was arguing that she is more experienced in getting laws passed in Washington than is Barack Obama -- which is true.

Why do people like op-ed columnist Bob Herbert, South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn and countless black bloggers hear a grievous insult in her simple observation? The outcry is so disproportionate to the stimulus that one can barely help suspecting something outright irregular.

I think of a study published last year in the Journal of Black Psychology. It documented that the extent to which black Americans perceive their lives to be affected by racism correlates with symptoms of general paranoia disconnected from racial issues.

To be able to hold in one's mind the notion that Mrs. Clinton would attack King suggests a bone-deep hypersensitivity that overrides sequential reasoning. "We have to be very, very careful how we speak about that era," Rep. Clyburn explains.

But why so very, very careful? What effect does it have on anyone's life if that era is occasionally discussed in less than perfectly genuflective phraseology? Is the Klan waiting behind a hill? Will a black man working at an insurance company in Cleveland have a breakdown because someone didn't give King precisely enough credit in a quick statement?

There is a willful frailty, a lack of self-confidence, in this kind of thinking. It suggests someone almost searching for things to claim injury about, donning the mantle of the noble victim in order to assuage a bruised ego.

Of course, there is a less depressing interpretation of the current uproar: Mrs. Clinton's critics are playing political hardball. You know, let's get blacks to vote for Mr. Obama by playing the race card to pretend Mrs. Clinton is dumping on King. John Edwards, for example, is obviously not mouthing agreement with these people out of insecurity about his blackness.

Well, politics is rarely pretty, but in this case the price is too high. For one, misinterpretation of statements in this vein makes black people look disinclined to process detail and context -- in other words, dim. It only gives that much more fodder to views on black intelligence like those uttered by James Watson.

Think, for example, how utterly unreal the notion is that Bill Clinton, our "first black president," would call Mr. Obama's whole candidacy a "fairytale" rather than referring, specifically, to perceptions of his record on the Iraq war. It's as if the outraged crowd is only capable of processing seven words at a time.

In an election that is supposed to focus on larger issues such as America's role in a violent world, playing the race card in this fashion distracts us from real problems. When most new AIDS cases are black and the murder rate among young black males is sky high, what kind of black representative throws tantrums over extremely unlikely implications of something someone said?

In the name of speaking for Mr. Obama, the people throwing these tantrums are presenting a parochial, cynical face, rather than the thoughtful, cosmopolitan one that the candidate himself is trying to show.

Overall, Mr. Obama has not run a "black" campaign. The past few days suggest that if he did, many would consider it a favor to him to churn up 10 more months of dustups over phrases carefully lifted out of context and held up as evidence of racism. Hopefully Mr. Obama is too smart, and too much a man of the world, to succumb to this twisted rendition of black identity.

Mr. McWhorter is a weekly columnist for the New York Sun and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Did anyone else notice that the lion's share of the questions went to Clinton and Obama...its almost like they barely let Edwards in. Immediately following the debate all of the analyst ignored Edwards too referring to Obama simply as "him" like there were no other males in the race. The media runs on entertainment and since thats the case a 2 person horse race is more interesting and financially lucrative. Its really sad when Edwards was the one who essentially brought all the key issues to the table which everyone now debates. Shame on MSNBC.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Edwards clearly won and he's the only one who can win in the south

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

To: celticfire, erin, wi,

I would ask you to remember that GWB has an approach to being president that is very similar to what Obama is stating. He said that he has publicly requested that these organizations stop doing this kind of stuff to support his candidacy. The interviewer then pushed him a little bit, by saying, "Oh, c'mon, you can get them to stop it if you want to." (Not an exact quote.) Huckabee pointed out that it is illegal for any coordination to take place between campaigns and these independent groups. He indicated that all he can do is publicly call for them to stop, but any private communication would violate the law and that he didn't want to go to jail because someone is doing something that he disagrees with. If that's the correct interpretation of the law, that would explain why Hillary Clinton can be a good administrator, but be unable to stop the 527's supporting her from spreading whatever they're being accused of spreading about Senator Obama. In fairness to all the candidates, this should be pointed out by the corporate mainstream media. I'm sure this won't satisfy any of the irrational Hillary haters out there, but nothing ever will satisfy them. I'd still like to get a look at Karl Rove's private National Republican Committee email correspondence with the Swift Boat Veterans for....Truth? I bet we'd see evidence of campaign coordination there, and it wouldn't be Karl begging them to stop.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Barack Obama does nothing to inspire me. The quote originally mentioned said he is not an "operating office." Hillary get it right, that is COO not CEO.

She then comapares him to Bush. That is just wrong. Obama correctly points out that Bush's biggest fault isn't that he mis-manages people like Hillary claimed, but he consistently sets the wrong vision. Afterall, he managed Hillary pretty well when he covinced her to authorize the Iraq war. He is actually very good at the bureaucracy, which is why he has been able to usurp more executive power and make congress ineffective.

Look Bush has two faults. Bad people hired (cronyism) and Bad ideas for the country. A new Clinton administration would certainly be staffed with many cronies and she has proven time and time again to have bad judgement.

Hillary (nor Edwards) had the courage to list a real weakness, but let me interpret the Clinton double speak. She said it was being impatient (that's sort of what I say when I am asked this question on job interviews), but the true answer is she is a perfectionist. Perfectionism leads to micromangement, which can clearly be seen as a big part of her previous Healthcare reform debacle. There are many stories that document her unwillingness to bring people into her process as the reason for its complete failure.

Her pefectionist attitude is also what precludes her from admitting she made the wrong vote on Iraq. She would rather try rewriting history before admitting that she makes mistakes.

There are too many serious problems in this country for us to hand the country over to a micro-manager like Hillary. And we most certainly need a president whose not afraid to inspire and enlist people smarter than himself on particular issues, to turn this country around. That President is Barack Obama.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Another question for Hillary:

What, exactly, from your employment history makes you the most "experienced" candidate?

The only two jobs she obtained on *her* merits are the Rose Law Firm and the Senate one she now holds. Yes?

Being First Lady of Arkansas and the U.S. are not "vetted" positions. You do not obtain them solely on your own merits in a competitive environment. Nor is there oversight, a source of evaluation of your work.

On the other candidates:

I like Edwards a lot, but am troubled by his repeated claims that he voted wrongly. It undermines my confidence in him. Still, I'd consider voting for him - certainly over Hillary.

I could live with Obama, from what I see so far. We need a thoughtful leader who can communicate his ideas clearly and in a collegial manner. Are 'admit nothing, deny everything and make counter allegations' tactics going to work for this campaign? These were words used to describe Bill Clinton some ten years ago (and not just regarding the 'Monica' issue), and seem to be an apt description of Clinton's campaign tactics now. Also, risking the black vote seemed to be ok for Clinton because she is more focused on the Hispanic vote, which would appear a much larger potential - the Hispanics, even according to her comments as I saw them, are generally less educated. Does their 'less educated' status give her more of an advantage because she genuinely cares...or is it because they may not necessarily take the time to look back at the Clinton prior history, or be able to see through the political games? Obama to G.W. Bush and H.R. Clinton to R. Cheney, and I was direct about that. I think they are fair and valid comparisons. Do you think they were not a fair nor valid comparisons when the candidates have essentially done so themselves? On a scale of Bush to Cheney styles: where would you place Obama, where would you place Clinton, if at all? Why or why not?
2) I did editorialize my opinion--which my whole post is, opinion. Posting on a blog, I think it fair to digress and share my personal opinion as to why Obama's style is okay by me.
3) On the other hand, I did not say which style was better. I could see arguments for both, and I left it with an open-ended question.
4) Finally, I said that it would be ridiculous to compare the policies that G.W. Bush and R. Cheney have enacted with the policies that B.H. Obama or H.R. Clinton would enact. Styles are one thing to compare; yet, the goals of what to achieve in office are different. And I did not compare policies between B.H. Obama and H.R. Hillary is strong and competent, I'll give her that. But, her true talent is the ability to adjust herself to fit the moment in order to win. That worries me and I don't trust it. She has shown poor judgement throughout this campaign. Do not think for one second that her negative surrogates imparting all of that damaging rhetoric against Obama weren't expressing the tone that she truly feels. I do not like or appreciate her kind of politics. It is the same business as usual and that does not mean change. It means the same story in a different package. Those fear tactics, calculated moments, in the beginning agreeing to the Nevada caucus in the casinos but now instigating a lawsuit through the teacher's union to prevent it because the Culinary Union endorsed Obama, not making a public appology for BET Bob Johnson's foolish remark about Obama's actions THIRTY YEARS AGO and two other of her surrogates for saying the same thing and on and on...spells very poor judgement!

Obama is correct. The President of the United States needs to be a uniter, a visionary and a great leader. Hillary has embarrassingly shown herself to be calculating and divisive regardless of last night's "one day" truce.

I don't want to see anymore dirty politics. America needs to stop accepting childness in government in order to gain political points. We want freshness, broadness, wit, HONESTY, and sound judgement. Please give me a break about all the experience this woman has. None of these candidates has ever been the President of the United States and none of them has any idea what to expect once they get into the White House. But we certainly don't need to bring more smut and dishonesty into that chair. We have enough of that already.

Don't lose sight of the reality that so many of Hillary's actions throughout this campaign have been negative political strategizing not unlike the foul play Bush used against John McCain in South Carolina in 2000. This does not take us forward. It takes us backwards. Obama is what is best for this country. Not someone who will stoop so low when her perceived "entitlement" to the thrown is compromised. Remember, people are afraid and panic right now because of the economy. Last month it was the war. Next month it will be Global Warming again. And after that it will be some natural disaster that we didn't see coming. The news is deadly during times like this because all you hear and see is how the country is going to hell in a hand basket. This is the perfect stage for someone like Hillary who is using all this bad news to her advantage and unfortunately is trying to kill America's wish for true change in government. And the Republicans are absolutely loving this because if she wins the nomination they believe, and so do I, that they can defeat Hillary in the National race and keep the house. They know her. They have hoards of stuff on her. Obama, on the other hand, is clean and they have nothing on him. He would be much harder to defeat. Don't let Hillary's panic button strategy sway you in the wrong direction. It is the same stuff we have always seen and boy is the Clinton machine coming down hard. See through it and see through it clearly or else we are going to go through another 4 or 8 years of Republicans or a Democrat with dishonest tendancies. Obama is non-corrupt, clean, clear and has a true and honest vision of hope for this country. Vote wisely!

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

Clinton is indeed trying to use the 'fear' factor (does sound like Bush, doesn't it?) to increase her 'vote' margin. And, if you check the facts on her 'energy/oil company perks' comment, the oil companies ended up with a net tax Increase of $300 mil (or was it bil?)- I guess she didn't check.

Viva Las Vegas: The MSNBC debate

"['Obama and Clinton, in one of their sharpest distinctions of the night, offered starkly different visions of the presidency.

--NSMsnbc (Sent Wednesday, January 16, 2008 11:18 AM
 Wow!
