It's more of the "feel good" stuff, yes, Obama is getting things off his chest, but it's politically stupid... Nobody beats Bill in the political area... He needs to focus on Hillary, there maybe he stands a chance.. But last night she made it clear, she also is quite adept at playing to win.

She won the debate again...

I know, Obama stood his ground and answered/fired back, but there in was the problem, he was answering back... Obama was caught up in the skirmish of the moment.. Hillary seemed capable of putting him on the defense, defusing him, taking him off message, as she continued to speak her message of how to win the war... Obama did draw first blood, with his Walmart shot, but Hillary parleyed with his work for a slum lord, and... the slum lord shot, has been swirling in the minds of the politically informed, we've all be wondering?.. And again he stopped and tried to explain... In short his attacks did little to help.. other than showing that he can sling mud too, they probably hurt him in the long run.

She really made Obama, look a bit amateurish, she was just better at manipulating the time and the questions to her advantage.

I think Hillary's greatest success last night was her pointing out what many of us want to know about Obama... That is who is he... That is she pointed out successfully, his equivocal tendencies when it comes to answering questions about his votes and what he actually stands for... Edwards chimed in, about his "present votes" that Obama is not willing to take a stand, and prefers to dodge tough issues playing it politically safe... Hillary was effectively saying that Obama is weak on issues and slippery in conversation. And she made it stick..

One gets the feeling that Obama does not have a record to stand on... That is, he much more comfortable talking about change and unity than actual issues.... That when it comes to issues Obama tries to slip the conversation to his political stump speech, or some variation there of.

Hillary was in effect saying there is a "Nothing Burger" in center of all this talk, that his words are beautiful, but there is nothing behind the rhetoric. Also on the health care issue, his slipping and sliding did not do anything to remedy her charge of his political "obliqueness," on issues. Edwards also pushed him to "clarify" and finally with the help of the moderator, Obama admitted his plan was not all inclusive... He would have done better if he would have stated the small differences and moved on....

Maybe it was a good night for Obama, with regard to South Carolina's up coming primary, but nationally he really took some big hits... Hillary won the debate, Edwards sensing Obama's weakness, switched his strategy of attacking Hillary when he deemed incorrectly that she was weakening, to attacking Obama, in hopes he can gain at Obama's expense...

That's right folks it's a rough game, there are three Gladiators in the Democratic Arena, they are all locked into a "Political" life and death struggle. I must say admiringly, three worthy champions of the prize... May the best "man" win...

Californian-so you are buying the Clinton lies hook line and sinker. Opposing the war and providing money for troops who are already there are 2 totally seperate things. The 130 out of 4000 present votes has been written by several outside sources to be a normal occurence in the Illinois legislature. And effectively counts as a no. Yet, the Clintons persist to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Is this the best attacks they can come with? That's how clean Obama is.

Obama had a very good attendance record for votes in the US Senate until he started running for President. Since then he has missed some (just like the rest of the Senators who are running).

I can't believe that Hillary has the audacity to call a press conference just to reiterate her false attacks. This is desperate because she knows he beat her handely in the debate. Our Reserve Units had to self-armor their vihicles becaused the government couldn't "afford" to keep them safe. While in the "safe" zone, my son had to sleep on a board because the military couldn't afford a mattress. The government took money from his paycheck for meals, for crying out loud.

Had Obama NOT voted to fund the war, I wouldn't even consider voting for him.

My son was a Reservist in college. Since he was under the maximum age set by insurance and a full-time student, he was covered by our health insurance plan. He was deployed, and returned too old to be covered by health insurance. Now he is uninsured and completely unable to afford insurance.

The military and our government has shamefully forgotten about our soldiers. They make sounds about taking care of their health, addressing PTSD, etc., but I can verify that this is a lie. My family was a very proud military family. I hate the disappointment I have come to feel during the last few administrations.

Clinton (Bill) is partly responsible for the underfunding of our military. I heard from Secret Servicement assigned to them during Clinton's administration that he AND Gore hated to visit the military bases. Once, upon having been given a keepsake with the military base's name on it, Gore threw it at a Secret Serviceman immediately after leaving and told him "to get that away from him."

Obama has a wonderful, comprehensive plan for our military. I believe he will turn this around, and do it honestly.

--Obama should stand up for himself, his ideals and his record against the distortion by the Clintons plural. However, the man needs to learn to speak more succinctly. A more useful strategy would be to briefly rebut and propose the facts, offer his plan and ideals, and focus primarily on the future and hope--he can't lose that message. I don't think he is responding to the charges in the most efficient manner.

Look, you have to fund the troops once they are in. Obama opposed the war in Iraq the beginning, but that doesn't change the reality that we have troops in Iraq now and need to be funded. The debate put me solidly behind Barack Obama for two reasons.
1. Clinton had repeatedly attacked Obama for considering 1 trillion dollar tax on "hard working Americans" to fund Social Security. Apparently, Clinton is opposed to “raising the cap” on Social Security payroll tax on wages over $97,000 (about 6% of the population makes over that amount). Hillary apparently thinks that the middle class can fund SS from 100% of their wages while those that make more, can fund SS on just 50%, 20% or .5% of their total income and still be eligible for full benefits. She thinks the burden should stay on the middle class.
2. Also, Hillary wants to mandate (or force) everyone to pay for health care. The thinking is that will drive the price down. What incentive is there for insurance companies to lower the price is everyone is force to buy it? Further, Obama would have kids going to college stay on their parent’s health care. Hillary would have kids after they turn age 18 (whether in college or not) buy their own. Their parents would still likely have to continue to pay for a family plan, but insurance companies would benefit with another paying customer at age 18.
For all her talk about how families are struggling with gas, education, heating, and food costs, she wants to increase the financial burden by adding a mandatory health cost too.
Some would call Hillary's attacks on Obama's stance on these issues as a way to deflect the real impact her own policies would have on the American people as politically artful. I'd call it a con job.

Many of the present votes were part of a pro-choice strategy developed by Planned Parenthood to defeat legislation that would have limited choice.

The Clinton team, 2 days before the NH primary, sent out a mailer attacking Sen. Obama's pro-choice commitment 2 days before the primary. This was ridiculous - Obama had a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood. Here's what one of the woman said who signed the mailer (and remember this is from a Clinton supporter):

Katie Wheeler, a former state senator, said the Clinton campaign had not given her background information about Obama's record on abortion rights when it asked her to sign the letter calling him weak on the issue, and said that, as a result, she did not understand the context of the votes that the letter was attacking him over.

"It should never have gotten to the point where anyone thought Obama was not pro-choice," said Wheeler, a founder of the New Hampshire chapter of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "I don't think the Clinton campaign should have done that. It was divisive and unnecessary."

This is what the Clinton Machine is all about. How can any Democrat applaud these type of tactics?

Because for the first time in this campaign he went after Hillary, and she gave it right back to him without exception.
...and he can't take it!
From the looks of his statement today, and the caterwauling that's coming from his supporters on this board, the desperation is starting to surface.

Lobbyists have bought positions of influence in her campaign, that should be illegal.

Bill Clinton is another part of her checkered past, present and future. the story today of him getting $20 million from his various deals and now having to cut those deals because Hillary is running for President still leaves him open to problems down the road. It's pretty laughable to think that people hate us all over the world today, when they were laughing at us in the 1990's as Bill was caught in his little affair with Monica Lewinsky. All Bill Clinton did was show how easy it was for the terrorists to attack us, they thought President Bush would be like Bill Clinton. Boy, did they get that one wrong!

Well said, unfortunately people don't take the time to learn the facts and rely on the lies spouted by Bill & Hill as truths. You think they (voters) would have learned their lesson from the various Clinton scandals over the years. I was very dis-heartened to hear Hillary bring up Tony Rezko last night. Obama has been transparent about his involvement with Rezko, I can't say the same for Hillary regarding the Rose Law Firm, Whitewater, Vince Foster, et al. It has been almost 8 years since the Clintons left the White House and they STILL can't manage to unseal Mrs. Clintons' records.

Wait a minute here, Senator Obama votes present and then he argues that Senator Clinton only had to vote no on a bill, this does seem like a double standard here folks, soemtimes a yes vote is not a vote for the bill if you know the bill won't pass anyway. At the very least it was uncouth and completely inappropriate for that setting. I was a Democrat who liked Hillary before she and her cronies started w/ their campaign of lies, distortion and slander. I was initially concerned that this infighting might split the Democratic party apart. Clearly, Hillary and Bill couldn't care less if it does. It's all about power to them. Now, I don't care if it splits the party either. I've left the party after the actions of Bill, Hillary, Bob Kerrey, Charlie Rangel, Mark Penn, Bill Shaheen and all the other Clinton cronies who have poisoned this party. Like others, I wouldn't vote for Hillary if she was running against Dick Cheney and I won't support any other Democrat as long as they seem intent on supporting Hillary.

It should also be noted that, since Hillary has as much chance of beating McCain in a general election as Kucinich does, a vote for Hillary now is a vote for McCain later. Just as well. Considering the Clinton's cronies' actions, it would serve the Democrats right to lose another election they should have won.

Pertaining the the "present" votes discussed in last night's debate:

I was born in Illinois & lived there most of my life. My degree is in political science. I have voted for both parties (the person - not the party line). I am an independent. I have a classmate and friend currently serving in the Illinios state congress.

For those of you who still want to try to understand this issue: A "Present" vote does NOT mean that you are taking a pass on legislation - it means that you are trying to refine the language of a prospective bill. Voting present indicates to the leadership that you are open to or leaning toward certain provisions, if it is re-tooled on some level. It is actually a MORE calculated vote than a "yes" or "no" as it indicates you have thought through an entire STRATEGY for success.

If you are going to write in this type of forum with conviction, please educate yourselves in the future before doing so.

I agree with an earlier post that the both the Clinton & Edwards campaigns are very clear on the voting rules in the Illinois legislature. It makes a very good sound-bite, but it is quite disingenuous.

Lets clear a few things up:

1) Senator Obama voted for the funding bills that Hillary also voted for NOT because he supported the war (every time he voted he mentioned he did NOT) but because he did not want to short change the troops of necessary equipment. He knew that dropping the funding would only hurt our brave men and women overseas.

2) He voted "present" 137 times out of 4000 votes because in Illinois that is a legitimate tactic to put pressure on the opposition to change the law to something better! It is COMMONLY done in the Illinois State House. It is a mark of strength, and courage, that he ONLY did this less than 1/2 of one percent of the time.

Alex, Chicago, Ill. - As Obama tried to explain, in Illinois, if you like part of a bill, but disagree with another part, you can vote present, which virtually means "No", but keeps the bill open for further discussion and debate. It doesn't completely kill the bill like a "no" vote would. An example of this, is a bill which was up regarding "right to choose" and Planned Parenthood asked him NOT to vote yes on it, because there was something in it they wanted changed. Therefore, he voted "present" and they were able to modify it before he voted Yes for the new bill. I don't know who I will vote for, but I have to say I am very disappointed in the Clintons for misleading the public like this. I am sure they are very aware what Present means in Illinois. And if they don't, they should find out before accusing him of something. If you don't like him for something else, that's fine, but I really think the present votes are ridiculous when you know what they mean. He has the right to protest certain parts of a bill he doesn't agree with. I wish more politicians would do the same instead of passing a "bad bill" because they were between a rock and a hard place.

The answer is evident to anyone whose name is not "ObamaHater". Bill Clinton should not keep trying to make up for all the grief he inflicted on his wife by damaging the Democrats (and trashing his own legacy). Senator Obama opposed the war in 2002 when he was a senator in Illinois, and he called the RIGHT shots. Hillary voted for "Authorization of The Use of Military Force Against Iraq"; that was the name of the Bill and I believe it is self-explanatory. Yet, Hillary is claiming she THOUGHT she was voting for the inspectors to return to Iraq. She is lying! it is Bill and Hill who hypocrites and liars of the worst kind. (CNSNews.com) - Former President Bill Clinton was honored as the nation's first black president Saturday at the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Annual Awards Dinner on in Washington, DC.

The chair of the all-Democratic caucus, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Tex.), told the crowd that Clinton "took so many initiatives he made us think for a while we had elected the first black president."

Clinton, who has spoken at the caucus every year since his 1992 election, made reference to the September 11th terrorist attacks, saying that black Americans have seen these kinds of religious tactics before.

He described the terrorists' philosophy as "somebody who thinks that only people in their community count and we're not part of their community; that only their reading of the scripture counts and we don't read the way they do. We have been on the other end of that, and we say no, no, no."

Clinton said Arab Muslims and non-Arab Muslims who don't agree with the terrorists are considered apostates who have walked away from the faith. "And those of us who don't happen to fall in those categories are infidels and all of us are fair game."

"We have heard this story before. We want the America we see in this room tonight. We have come a long way from the time when people in our country thought it was all right to kill the innocent."

Clinton told CNSNews.com he was honored to be considered America's "first black president."

"I think it's a function of the work I have done, not just as president, but my whole public life to try to bridge the racial divide and the fact that even when I was a little boy I had friends who were African-American," he explained.

Clinton said that while he misses being president he has "a wonderful life now and I had the time that was allocated to me under the Constitution." He explained, "I have no regrets and I'm trying to go on and play a constructive role as a citizen now and I am quite happy with it."

He added, "I am happy in Harlem and I am honored to be thought of as the first black president."

Actress Vivica A. Fox gushed that President Clinton "spoke so wonderfully and made us African-Americans feel more a part of American society. I miss him so much."

Rep. John Lewis said Clinton "has the rare capacity of connecting with African- Americans. He understands the hopes and dreams and the frustration of African- Americans. We identify with him and he can identify with us."

Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) said, "God bless him, he got tonight what he really deserved, which is a thank you."

However Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said she has no idea what people mean when they talk about Clinton being "the first black president. "I don't know what that means. I don't know what that means," she commented as she walked away.

I was very unhappy with Hillary's pettiness last night and impressed with Obama's steady efforts to set the record straight when she nitpicked at him again and again. Hillary is intelligent and politically astute and I generally agree with her policies (she and Obama are not that far apart policywise), but she is so divisive, duplicitous and polarizing that I think having her in the White House will be a serious problem for our country. As a woman, I'd love to see a woman president, just not THIS woman. We need a President who can work with both Dems and Reps and stop the incredible gridlock in Washington--which is as much the Democrats' fault as the Republicans'. I worry about Hillary's general arrogance and bitterness, and for all her talk, I don't see any core principles I can hang my hat on. I also don't see her as someone whom world leaders will respect, and we desperately need to restore our standing in the world. But Obama strikes me as having strong leadership skills and an ability to rise above the petty politics and keep focused on the big picture, yet at the same time, if you read his policy statements on his web site, he grasps the nuances and complexities of issues and has well thought out strategies and plans. His honesty and integrity are a real breath of fresh air. If Hillary wins the nomination, I may even have to vote for McCain, who is also a man of honesty and integrity--and I've been a lifelong Dem and have some real disagreements with McCain's Iraq war stance. I just think 4 polarizing years of Billary is not what this damaged country needs right now. Give us someone with unshakable core values of honesty and integrity, someone who leads rather than parses and manipulates, someone who is not only smart but wise. That's what we need if we're to heal the wounds of the shameful Bush years.

First let me say that I am an independent voter. I have been on both sides of the fence politically over the course of my life. Right now I am solidly backing Barack Obama. I cannot get behind Hillary Clinton under any circumstances. I have many reasons and not enough time at this minute to list them. If she gets the nomination, I look forward to voting for the Republican candidate, who will hopefully be John McCain. I have very carefully researched Sen. Obama over the course of a YEAR (oh, what a long year!) and have come to the conclusion that he is the best choice out of the bunch (the WHOLE bunch, Democrat or Republican).

I just want to encourage everyone to do your own research, go to the candidates websites AND read a large variety of news sources(www.realclearpolitics.com makes this easy) that we are so lucky to have access to over the internet. I am really not trying to patronize- it is just frustrating sometimes to get on these message boards. Most times as I read it feels like I am swimming in either ignorance (not in the pejorative, ignorance as in lack of information) or hatred or both (for example, the earlier post from "Obama hater", which is hateful AND untrue- by the way I also don't appreciate the way Mitt Romney's faith is distorted by some).

No matter whom you favor on whichever side, I would also encourage EVERYONE to go out and make your voice heard in your state's primary. It is OUR country after all! Please use your voice and vote.

Anyway, that was a bit of a rant but I just had to get it off my chest. I feel better now. =)

First of all, I think it's great that so many people are actually paying attention to what's really going on as opposed to simply cranking the volume on American Idol and pretending like everything's a-ok. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of vitriolic attack going on here from both Obama and Clinton supporters. I think that both sides are losing sight of the real issues at stake here in the fight for one candidate over another. The real issue is not to beat the Republicans at any cost, nor is it to see the first female or Black president in the White House. What is at stake is the future and security of our nation. We need real change. We need to revive our economy, we need to educate our children and we need to reach out to our international neighbors and try to heal the breaches that exist. And those are just some of the top tier things. We need to come together as Americans and fight for the person who will fight for us. Not only that, but we need to make sure that person is doing the job that we are paying them to do. It's no longer enough to cast a ballot and leave the rest to chance. Real change will come on January 21, 2009 and we need to be right there with it to make sure that our needs are met. Now is not the time for apathy nor for petty concerns that in the end shouldn't matter anyway. Every politician has skeletons in his/her closet. The test of their character is whether or not that politician will turn on the light. You find the one who will and you will have found the right person for the job. I would hope that it is more important to have the right person than the right symbol. As an Independent, I will be voting for Barak Obama because I personally believe that he may be the best hope we have. Yes he's inexperienced and yes he's new, but it seems to me that doing things the old, experienced way is what got us into the mess we're in. You cannot expect different ends if you are using the same means. It is a shame that more of the candidates on both sides do not recognize that. It is a shame that more of our citizens do not recognize that. Perhaps then more children would be clothed and fed and in school, more soldiers would be at home with their families and more Americans would not be pounding the pavement every day looking for work. I am saying that we need to wake up as a nation and look around. This is not the America of yesteryear. If we expect to ever become the great nation we have so long paraded ourselves to be, then it is high time that government of the people, by the people and for the people be resurrected from its grave.

Since the Iraq war began, it was very difficult to talk to my family. They are all staunch Republicans and I was so depressed about the war (I had a close friend die over there) that about every other conversation with them would morph into an argument. They thought GW was the best president in history and if he said war, then who were they to question.

I had over three years of consistent arguments with them. Then I started following Obama. I began telling them about him, but in non-confrontational ways (not talking about the war). Then, I started sending them e-mails, video's and anything else non-confrontational that I could.

I think that they saw such a change in me, that they were more open to listening. Finally, about three months ago, they told me that they were going to register as Dems just to vote for him in the primaries. The other day i began thinking about the fact that I cannot remember the last time I have argued with them. They call and e-mail me to tell me the latest.

Finally, a few days ago, my mom, who has extreme health problems, is in bed at least a week a month or more, told me that she is going to go volunteer at Obama HQ. That she wants the country to unite more than anything.

Basically, it was not Obama that healed the wounds in our family, but it was the fact that him, his supporters, and our message sparked a little bit of hope that made a big change!

I had learned about this awhile ago, but in spite of the fact that this has been explained numerous times just here alone, no one seems to be paying attention. Are Americans really that close-minded? I have to admit it scares me. And where is the media? Why aren't they putting out articles that compare all the statements that aren't true for both parties and all the candidates? They're too busy talking about whether Hillary crying or not helped get her votes. I could care less. The media should start focusing on the issues, where the candidates stand, and any statements they make that are untrue. That would help the voters enormously. Why doesn't some news agency decide to do this on a daily basis where voters can go and make comparisons?

Obama should have been more clear on his points:
#1 - The Clinton/Edwards plan has the government forcing people to buy insurance. This is consistent with the socialist views that Hillary has.
#2 Hillary claims that she is the president for the economy, yet her WTO and NAFTA bills sold out Americans, many of whom lost their jobs.
#3 After you lose your job due to outsourcing and unfair trade, you can't even file for bankrupcy, due to the Bill that Hillary would have supported. The fact that the first bill failed doesn't matter. She doesn't care about the little people

1. Either you are a Republican or you blindly support Hillary.
2. Up until recently, the Democratic Congress as a whole, to include Hillary, voted to fund the war in support of the troops, not Bush's policy on Iraq. She knows this, but because she wants to win so badly she is willing to sell her soul to gain the white house. When US soldiers are sent to fight a war, good or bad, you support them with appropriate funding for supplies and equipment. Oh Yeah, that's why Hillary voted for the funding also.
3. Hypocrisy is when Bill of all people distorts Obama's record on Iraq and his voting record in Ill.
4. As for Obama's voting record in IL., he had over 4000 votes in the state senate and is respected by IL. state Democrats and some Republicans. Most if not all of the "present" votes were apart of a larger state democratic policy agenda to get a bill amended to suite democratic policy. IL. is a state where a senator can vote present on a bill to protest bills that he believes are drafted unconstitutionally or as part of a broader democratic plan.
5. It is evident you are believing the hype from the media and the Clinton camp. Obama was the first and only true candidate that stated he wanted to reach across racial and political party lines to form a broad coalition, which equates to change. So, I don't understand where you are coming from with this pandering to black people. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE, VOTE OBAMA IN O8.

The "present" votes are a problem for him because many were about abortion and other hot button issues, which makes it obvious that he didn't vote on those for "political" reasons. but, no, he's above that sort of thing, right? The public has a right to know about ANY unlawful activity, and they can judge for themselve how much weight to put on it, given the fact that he "came clean". After following the political process these last few months there are a couple of conclusions that I have reached. First: NO MORE BUSH or Bush look-a-likes which included most Republicans EXCEPT McCain and Huckabee. Second: Almost any Democrat would have earned my vote, except after that shrill performance by Clinton at the debate a couple of nights ago, the scales have fallen from my eyes. It is frightening to compare that performance to the "woe is me" cry in New Hampshire just a short time ago.
I am very concerned about the direction this country may take with Clinton or Guiliani or Romney at the helm.

And Hillary's vaunted experience? She started as a "Goldwater Girl" a formal supporter of the most conservative Republican, who voted against all civil rights acts. This propelled her into working for another conservative Republican congressman, Mel Laird, as a legal assistant. She was a corporate lawyer and sat on the Board at Walmart, notorious for mistreating its employees. She was the wife of a governor and the wife of a president with no security clearance or access to daily reports. This may be an education, but it is hardly experience that qualifies one for president. She never had responsibility for anything in the public arena until she became senator, except for the work on health care which was a failure. You Clintonians are being duped as usual. They will lie, cheat, steal, do anything, say anything to get in power. And you ignorantly believe it all because you want to. They prey upon such innocence. If Hillary is nominated she will bring down the Democratic party just like Bill did, with their bitterness and attack modes. Bill squandered a majority and so will she. Concerning Obama's war funding votes. The people that argue that Obama is somehow noble because he was really against the war, but once there supported it because of the troops are simply stating a moral equivocation.

As I recall we finally got out of Vietnam when Congress cut the funding for the war. If Obama is against the war he is against it, and he should have voted against funding it if he felt that strongly about it. No funding and the troops would be home now. Instead he did the expedient thing. He is no better than all the other politicians he thinks he soars above, just more of a hypocrite.
