There were several comments on these boards yesterday to the effect of, "If Europe and/or Canada can afford it, why can't we, and Hillary will get us there."

That would be all well and good if that were actually what Hillary is proposing. It's not. She is proposing an expansion of our current health care system by forcing every single person in this country to buy health care, whether they can afford it or not. If someone chooses not to buy health care for whatever reason (this is still a free country, as I recall), she hinted that she may be willing to garnish their wages.

Not only is this a decidedly bad idea both substantively and politically, it is also inherently anti-democratic and extremely timid. If Hillary wanted to go out on a limb and support a government-run single-payer health system, she would probably have a lot of support for that, albeit not a lot of institutional support. She recognizes, of course, that it would take a lot of political clout to get something like that through congress. So she says "universal", knowing that many democrats will automatically think "free health care for all".

The worst part? Her plan will by definition be the most harshly punitive to the most vulnerable in our society: the poor, the disenfranchised, and the lower middle class. Ridiculous, and contrary to every principle of the Democratic party.

First thoughts: A Super Day

To all the women of my boomer generation who are torn by this decision, please consider this. If Hillary’s quest for the nomination ends with the unexpected rise of this silver-tongued young upstart, we can all be proud of the strength of her candidacy. At this point nobody can deny that she was fully accepted by the American people as a legitimate contender for the top office in the land. She has already cleared the path for women who decide to run in the future.

If she manages to beat Obama now, Hillary drives a stake through the heart of a dream beginning to take hold of the public imagination. A diverse spectrum of America sees in Barack’s candidacy the hope that we can bridge the gulf that has divided our country since we all came of age. We can’t expect to then convert these dreamers to our vision of managerial expertise and the paying of dues and waiting your turn in time to turn them out and win an election.

If Hillary loses in November, (and she will lose) think about what that does to the chances of women seeking their party’s nomination in the future. If Hillary couldn’t win with all the built in advantages that come with having a husband who happened to be a two-term president, then why should the party take a risk on another woman in the future, particularly one without all the advantages Hillary enjoys? If we get behind Obama now, it’s win-win. We can safely say that all the barriers of race and gender have been shattered and future candidates can rise to the top based solely on ability. Isn’t that what we have been working for all these years?
First thoughts: A Super Day

J. Just yesterday, Obama was up 46% to 40%...'

From Campaigm Diaries:

'...2.05.2008
In final Super Tuesday polls, California is all over the place

After SUSA's massive wave of polls comforted Clinton supporters earlier today, we knew that the next batch of surveys could only bring some good news to Obama supporters. And Zogby's third and last day of tracking polls confirms that pollsters are very divided in what to expect in the Democratic race. Their Republican results are much more consistent, suggesting that the Democratic primary is still very fluid with many people still making up their mind.

And with that let's review the latest numbers from Zogby, and first off California where two polls show widely different numbers.

Zogby shows Obama has stormed to a stunning 13% lead, 49% to 36%. Just yesterday, Obama was up 46% to 40%, so he had some very good single nights Sunday and Monday. Zogby explains that he progressed among Hispanic voters and women, two key Clinton constituencies.
Among Republicans, Romney remains stable, leading 40% to 33% for McCain with Huckabee at 12%.

That California's polls are all over the place is confirmed by SUSA's second California poll of the day. They supplemented the poll they had this afternoon with numbers from Monday night and found Clinton up 52% to 42%. Clinton's advantage among Latinos is a large 67% to 31%. The key to Clinton's good numbers here lies in the fact that more than a third of the electorate have already voted, and they indicate having chosen Clinton by 17%. Obama will need to have a big day tomorrow to offset that.
SUSA shows Romney facing the same problem: SUSA explains that conservatives are now racing to vote Romney (who has tripled his support among conservatives in three weeks) but Romney will have to offset his disadvantage among early voters who are locked in for McCain by 6%. Overall, Romney has pulled into a tie, 39% to 38%. In the poll released this afternoon, Romney was down 39-36...'
First thoughts: A Super Day

Yes, let's vote for the community activist from Chicago and part-time junior Senator. He can lead us through any community type activites we may have in the future. Oh, he is for change and yes we can do what ever it is he's going to do. After all some actresses and liberal far-left typical Washington crowd people are supporting him. And most of all I like his general speeches about general stuff. I almost forgot, he's a civil rights attorney who will free the muslims from Getmo.

First thoughts: A Super Day

Vote OBAMA!

First thoughts: A Super Day

I find it rather amusing that the Baptist preacher Mike Huckabee is siding with John McCain, who has had numerous failed marriages with children that are not very close. We have competition amongst our goods/services providers that allow us to have the best-of-the-best, the most cutting edge, innovative technology. That is true even in healthcare. Can you imagine not having the choice of whether to go to a particular doctor for, say, orthopedic surgery, because a)the wait would be years upon years or b)because like many other things in recent years, the doctors all practice out of other countries because they get paid better elsewhere? That is what would happen if we did not have a system of CHOICE with our healthcare.

The current system, where insurance companies and networks dictate our decisions is wrong. However, taking away the competition factor where doctors/scientists strive for a new and innovative definition of excellence would only hurt US, the patient. Also of importance - Canadians, Europeans, etc...come to our country to have medical procedures done - BECAUSE we have the best of the best, and because although our system is VERY FLAWED - it creates a level of excellence that is higher than in other places.

Did you know that what is considered a birth defect and a flaw in a child in say, China, is corrected by an outpatient procedure in our country? Did you know that part of what drives up the cost of healthcare is the fact that we have so many regulations and mandates that are expensive (but necessary) in order to provide top-rated healthcare?

When you talk about universal healthcare, which sounds like an awesome opportunity to provide everyone with treatment for whatever ailments they have, you should look further into what it would do to this country - the long term effects and the implications it has for our future.

We need reform - change and hope - but we have to find a way to incorporate the American way of life into all of the issues of today, especially the ones that we are depending on to carry us in to the future!

First thoughts: A Super Day

Dear NBC/MSNBC:

URGENT MESSAGE

The Clinton camp (surrogates) is at it again with slanderous late statements about Sen. He was 46, the same age [as Obama]. And he was considered an upstart."

Conyers has spent much of the past week campaigning for Obama, and he called the primary battle one of the most pitched and emotional he'd ever seen. In a phone interview with the Huffington Post, he dismissed the notion -- raised in last Thursday's CNN Democratic debate -- that either of the candidates would be willing to server as the other's vice president.

"I started off thinking this is the way we would resolve it," the congressman said. "But I think they both generally see themselves as presidential material and not people working underneath or subservient to the other. I just don't want democrats to get suckered in by talk of "universal healthcare", dreaming of a single-payer system, when they're not getting anything of the kind. If anything, I think, Hillary's plan will make things worse for the poorest of the poor. Zogby's love affair with Obama is well known- he didn't even conduct polls in states that Clinton is far ahead- like Oklahoma or Tenn! Nor does he mention the surprising fact that Hillary has surged in Alabama- nope- but he makes HUGE play about the double digit Obama lead in Georgia. Then you have Survey USA with Clinton up 10 in California- Zogby has Obama up 10! In Missouru, Survey USA has a huge Clinton surge- she is up by 11, BUT Zogby has Obama up by 3!!! What is up with Massachusetts?????????? Obama has almost every major endorcement in the state-as well as the Gov and Kennedy machines-yet he is down 12 points- why isnt the media looking at Mass as a signal for how much the Kennedy endorcement meant????? He said his opposition against the
war from the start will make him the stronger rival to
Republican front-runner and war backer John McCain in
the general election.

Obama's long-standing opposition to the war helped him
pick up the backing of MoveOn.org, a liberal network
which counts 3.2 million members and decided to
support him by a vote of 70 percent to 30 percent for
Clinton. The group said Friday that it has 1.7 million
members in the 22 states scheduled to vote in the race
Tuesday, and it would immediately begin a campaign to
get them behind Obama.

Obama also picked up the support of a large union in
California which had endorsed rival John Edwards, who
dropped out of the race this week.

Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey was returning to the campaign
trail in support of her friend Obama. The talk show
hostess planned to hold a rally with Obama's wife,
Michelle, and Caroline Kennedy on Sunday in Los
Angeles. Winfrey held massive rallies for Obama in
December in the early voting states of Iowa, New
Hampshire and South Carolina.

MoveOn.org executive director Eli Pariser said the
country needs a president to end the war, provide
universal health care, address climate change, restore
America's standing in the world and "change business
as usual in Washington." In his statement, Pariser
thanked all the other candidates who ran in the
Democratic primary for their contributions to the
race.

Obama criticized Clinton's answer during a debate
Thursday night when she was asked why she voted
against a 2002 amendment offered by Sen. Carl Levin,
D-Mich. The amendment would have given weapons
inspectors more time in Iraq and required President
Bush to first obtain U.N. approval before using force.
Clinton argued that a vote for the Levin amendment
would have subordinated U.S. authority in Iraq to the
U.N. Security Council and called it a troublesome
precedent.

She reiterated her explanation of the 2002 vote to
give Bush authority to use military force to oust
Saddam Hussein. But she added, "If I had known then
what I know now, I never would have given President
Bush the authority. It was a sincere vote based on my
assessment at the time and what I believed he would do
with the authority he was given. He abused that
authority; he misused that authority."

She declined to say the vote was a mistake. Obama
criticized her explanation in his news conference, the
third he's held this week leading into the Super
Tuesday contests. Clinton holds a lead in the polling
in most of those states.

"I think there continues to be a suggestion that it
was not a vote for war, and I thought that her
explanation with respect to the Levin amendment was
inaccurate," Obama said. "Anyone who looks at the
Levin amendment knows that we were not ceding
sovereignty in some fashion to the United Nations."

Responding to Obama Friday, Clinton spokesman Phil
Singer said Obama's early opposition to the war was
not borne out by his actions in the Senate.

"The reality is that once he got sworn in, he
explicitly called for keeping troops in Iraq and
opposed a timeline for withdrawal, only changing his
position when he became a candidate for the White
House," Singer said.

In Sacramento, one of California's largest unions, the
Service Employees International Union', decided to
throw its support to Obama. The 650,000-member union's
backing could help Obama cut into Clinton's lead in
California polls of Democratic base voters, many of
whom are union members. The SEIU includes city, county
and state workers, as well as in-home support and
health care workers.

Union officials will urge their members to vote for
Obama but do not plan to do a wider get-out-the-vote
effort.

Obama was also endorsed Friday by the New York
City-based Transport Workers Union, which also had
originally sided with Edwards. "With Senator Edwards
out of the race, our officers found it an easy
decision to lend our support to the Obama campaign,"
said union president James C. Little.

For the Repubicans amongst us - if you want a liberal (equal to Billary) that is an old ex-military man with a hot temper, zero business experience, and just more Washington, then you should vote for McCain. Now I don't think this is any deep conspiracy and as most would assume this would be the case be facto in any event the matter who was vice president and it makes sense for the Clinton campaign not to reveal this amazingly unpredictable revelation unless there is a make-or-break point in the campaign prior to the nomination. What I think this is evidence of is the lack of responsible journalism in the media. The deference that is given to both of the Democratic candidates is breathtaking. Only once in the debates has anyone made reference to perhaps the biggest political setback the Democrats have faced in the last decades. In that case Monaco Wednesdays' name nor the concept of impeachment was both left out to soften the question when Russert asked Hillary what her worst moment was. That is of course the Monica nightmare that no one seems to want to remember or at least be brave enough to bring up . It is certainly revisionist history to say that the Clintons were elected to clean up after George H. W. Bush, when it is historical the obvious that George W. Bush was elected to clean up after the Clintons. The Clinton presidency did great service to the Democrats by creating a legacy of comparative fiscal responsibility, but they were also responsible for Al Gore's lost which is been an amazingly critical historical turning point in American politics. Someone please ask if Bill is going to be de facto vice-president or de jure prior to the end of the primary process!

First thoughts: A Super Day

All I know is that I love my country, and I want what's best for it.
That's why I am voting for Hillary today!
GET OUT AND VOTE AMERICA!

GO HILLARY, 2008!
J. I believe that every president in the history of our great progressive nation has stood on the desire and vision of change. I find it incredibly encouraging that today, at this point in history, we are all unified in the assumption and desire for a much needed change.

The greatest accomplishment of the day is that we have a nation united in this desire and inspired enough to realize that what makes this country great – what makes us America – is that we each have the power and responsibility to be a part of that change. It is not the person who occupies the White House who will create change for all of us. We are a nation ‘by the people, for the people’…that means we are in control of our destiny. That is the very freedom this country was founded on. The change that occurs does so as we all become responsible for our own decisions, for our own consequences. When we each realize that in order to change our ‘system’ we must become an active part of it we will have realized what it truly is to be American.
That is the great accomplishment of this day, Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008!

Huckabee for President, 08
First thoughts: A Super Day

Actually you are wrong about WA State. Our caucuses are this Saturday, the Feb. 9. The primary on Feb. 19 are only a beauty contest for the dems. And only give half the delegates for the GOP.

Very confusing!

First thoughts: A Super Day

Sierra in SF- Who cares? Being the wife of a former President is not elected experience. I do not remember the ballot saying that Bill and his Wife are runniing for President. In my Official Washington State Voters Guide her elected experience is exactly one line. She has been a Senator for 7 years. That is it. While she would like to claim that she could "hit the ground running" that just isn't true. She has not been exposed to what the daily job entails. Most of the Presidential matters that Bill had on his plate including his daily schedule could not be discussed with Hillary by law. Occupying the White House and making First Lady PR appearances doesn't in any way qualify one to actually be President. When it comes to elected experience, Obama has actually served in Government longer. Ultimately, neither one really has much experience.
In the end, I want someone making decisions based on logic and hard facts. That person also needs to be a strong leader. The job of President takes a strong, decisive, rational person, not one that might break out in tears (as Hillary did in her Q&A a few weeks back).
First thoughts: A Super Day

Obama is only gaining in the polls due to the bias news organizations such as MSNBC. The free press caused Jimmy Carter to lose against Reagen and is doing its best to see Hillary fall. The questions poosed to Hillary by the Today show this morning were hostile yet those asked to Osama Obama were a joke. MSNBC is a joke! Shame, shame, shame--you are just like FOX TV: FAKE.

First thoughts: A Super Day

Hillary getting choaked up in the primaries?
Maybe its time to decide if she's emotionally stable enough to be President....I mean these are the primaries...what's she going to do under real pressure as a President in a real emergency?

First thoughts: A Super Day

First thoughts: A Super Day

Marylou De C. Barack Obama was against this war when it was unpopular to be against this war. He recognized this criminal act back in Oct. 2002, when Hillary was supporting this war. At that earlier time, a priori, he stated that this incursion would be a diversion from our hunt for Osama bin Ladin and the Taliban and would risk a chaotic situation, a quagmire in Iraq, from which, it would be next to impossible for us to be extricated.

In addition to this amazing foresight, he has a world view. It is a view that is at the same time, supportive of a strong (and wisely used) defense, while advocating a pro-active diplomatic approach. This concept may be the most significant change in American foreign policy in years. He seeks to alleviate tensions around the globe with his world view. I guarantee that this will be well received by the international community. It will be effective in diffusing the Islamic radicals by strengthening the position of the moderates.

This far sighted and far reaching approach will be instrumental in re-instating American leadership, both moral and real, in this new world order. I think his brave and creative approach to international relations, is head and shoulders above his competitor(s). BTW John McCain's brave and unfortunate years spent in the Hanoi Hilton, in no way confers upon him an expertise in international policy. His positions on both the war and the surge, evidence little understanding of the socio-political situation in Iraq or in other Islamic nations.

On other issues, well…look, we're all Democrats. We're the party that leads the social revolution. Domestically, we all support progressive measures that involve universal health care, equal rights for minorities, for women, for gays. We all support better education and job growth. We all should support reining in the power of the corporate elite (although, I think it's obvious that Mrs. Clinton's credentials in this area are nebulous). Essentially there's no argument here between the two of them.

So, all of the noise about social agendas is merely competition in rhetoric. But really, the one who can forge the coalition necessary to get these measures passed in the Congress, is Barack Obama. He is the consensus builder and has the best chance of moving this country in the progressive direction that we all would like to see. For this reason, I believe that it is Barack and not Hillary, who will be able to tackle the major problems that will face the new occupant of the Oval Office. He is the candidate of substance. He will be right from day one.

Barack has demonstrated intelligence, judgment, integrity and a charismatic exuberance that inspires people by making them feel good about their best qualities. He inspires Americans by helping them to realize all that is truly beautiful and honorable about being an American. This is a remarkable talent and we should recognize this. It would be a shame to miss this opportunity.

I know that we all have a personal allegiance to our particular candidate, so I can't, in all fairness, argue about my subjective reasons for strongly supporting Obama. However, I will say, that those of you who want to vote for Obama because he’s black and feel that this would be a revolutionary statement…get over it! Those of you who have been waiting your whole life for a woman president and therefore want Hillary…get over it! Those reasons are like buying a house because you like the draperies. We’re all in this together and there is too much at stake here to vote for someone as a vehicle by which to make a statement about your personal identity.

In terms of true substance, objectively speaking, there is only one distinctive feature that separates the two of them. And there's no argument about this...Obama was against this war from the beginning and Hillary made mistakes in judgment about this war, time and time again. She has repeatedly supported President Bush in this criminal endeavor. Keep this in mind when you make your choice on Super Tuesday.
Obama '08
First thoughts: A Super Day

I would rather vote for the obama girl then either of the Democratic canidates

First thoughts: A Super Day

GOVERNOR HUCKABEE wins the Mountain Mama-West Virgina!!!!Woohoo!!!!! take that radio talk show hosts and liberal media that has TRIED to shut Governor Huckabee down- He took his case straight to the people and BEAT the Romney money machine...ina a state he wasn't even predicted to do well in...Maybe Romney should drop out of the race and stop taking votes from Huckabee!!!!!! 18 delegates for the real Governor...Congratualtions Governor Huckabee-YOU DESERVE IT!!!!
First thoughts: A Super Day

I htink Hillary is the best choice we have right now.Voting for Obama is like voting for John McCain. Please stop and have some faith in the american people.
First thoughts: A Super Day

Obama is "Pinkberry" for those who need something new and different...Pinkberry isn't new and different, it's just frozen yogurt...if Obama wins the Democratic nomination, I will, for the first time in 45 years, vote Republican...to those women who are voting for Obama, REMEMBER Black men got the vote before women...

First thoughts: A Super Day

GOOO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOOO HILLARY!!!!! THE MEDIA WILL NOT BRAINWASH ME!!!!

HILLARY 08

First thoughts: A Super Day

I'm an independent businessman. I grew up poor and working hard on a small farm, I served our country in the US Army, then I took advantage of the Veteran's Education Assistance Program (VEAP) -- which has now morphed to the Montgomery GI Bill -- to attend college while working full-time on the night shift in a trauma center. I chose to accept no parental support in financing my college education so my younger brothers could have an easier road to travel. I now hold two Master's degrees, I own an investment firm that continues its rapid growth velocity despite the collapse of easy credit in the financial sector, and I employ a dozen forward thinking men & women who understand that price only becomes an issue in the absence of value. I employ people, provide benefits & security, and build wealth for those willing to work for it.

I have a problem with the "nanny state redistribution of wealth" vote gathering motif of the democrat candidates and the "I wish I was Reagan" vote seekers of the republicans. Each are parasites on the productive citizens of our nation, and I'm sickened by the punitive & confiscatory nature of our current tax code.

You liberals out there need to understand something -- the only way to insure long term success is to allow for the possiblilty of failure. You conservatives out there need to grow a brain -- McCain is a war hero, but he's parlayed his heroism into a lifetime of leeching from US taxpayers and he's more liberal than either hussein-obama or billery. Incidentally, obama's mama, a misguided liberal academic dreamer, raised him as a white single mother while his black muslim daddy abandoned them both. Is he black enough?

I don't care how much melanin hussein-obama's skin contains. I don't care about billary's reproductive anatomy. I don't care that the republicans have to invent reasons to call themselves conservative enough to deserve your vote. I do care that all of them are so busy interviewing for a job, that none of them have actually done one for years.

Nixon's staff believed in the political clout of "the silent majority". They were as right as he was wrong. We productive members of the American economy and way of life would very much like for you parasitic dreamers to get a REAL EDUCATION and actually PRODUCE something beyond bloviation before you think you're well informed enough to cast a ballot.

There was a stupid movie several years ago called "Working Girl" in which a supporting cast member told Melanie Griffeth's character that she could dance around in her underwear, but it wouldn't make her Madonna. In the same fashion, the exercise of your privilege to vote doesn't make you a citizen worthy of the way of life soldiers like me made possible for you unless you EDUCATE yourself beyond newsclips, blogs, and wishful thinking.

The world is at stake, folks -- it's important!

First thoughts: A Super Day

I have wached msnbc for years. Barack Hussein Obama? What has he ever done? I give him credit for being an engaging speaker but there is absolutely no substance to anything he says. Everyone is for some kind of "change". But what does this mean? Nothing but empty rhetoric...Change can also be bad, such that a bad situation could be made worse or a good situation made bad.

For instance "Universal Healthcare". If you can't afford it now just wait until it's "free". Dear liberals, nothing is free or universal. Nothing. Our medical system needs more market forces not less. And by the way, it is still the best in the world despite misleading data such as the U.S. having the 44th highest life expectancy. You compare apples and oranges when you look at countries like Sweden for example. They don't allow a flood of poor illegal aliens over their border many of which are in bad health when they get here bringing in all kinds of diseases. It is also true as a society the U.S. is obese, which lowers our life expectancy considerably but doesn't indict the quality of our health care. As far as I know in a free society, we can't force people to loose weight and excercise. Great Britain has universal care. The result-long waits for poor care. Now they are actually proposing "self care" because the system is imploding under the costs. Great, you have a serious problem and you have to diagnose and treat yourself? Canada has universal. Canadians flood over the borders to the U.S. to get the care they can't get in Canada. Cheaper Canadian drugs? This is only because they are a small market and are being subsidized by primarily U.S. pharmeceudical companies. I support reimportation because it will eventually drive their prices up to what they should already be paying. It will have little effect on our prices long term. I want drug companies to make money so they can invest in developing the next break through drug. As a country we should never penalize success like you liberals like doing. Politics of envy...

Someone said Hillary Clinton is the smartest and most qualified candidate. Please, she didn't even realize that Benazir Bhutto would run for a different office (Prime Minister) than President Musharraf. Dear Hillary, Pakistan is a muslim country with nuclear weapons and our supposed ally against terrorism. Many terrorist originate from Pakistan and OBL is probably hiding in a Pakistani cave somewhere. You might want to read up on their history and political system if you hope to be the U.S. president. Just a suggestion...but you can always learn "on the job", as you hypocritically suggested others would need to do. Give me a break...

You liberals should be very happy. It looks as if McCain will win the Republican primary. In this case you are garanteed a liberal in office.
