Let me preface by saying that I was once a great admirer of Ralph Nader...As much as I respect Nader for being one of America's greatest consumer advocates, I think now he is blind to the real effects of his actions. He still denies that his participation in 2000 had anything to do with Gore's loss. Yes, Gore lost that election for many reasons, he should have won Tennessee, he should have won Arkansas, and yes he did win Florida. Nader was not the only reason Gore lost in 2000, but he was one of the reasons (and the exit polling numbers prove this beyond a doubt). Without Nader, Gore would have won the popular and electoral vote outright in Florida and the Republicans would not have been able to wrest it from Gore. Like in 2000, Nader is once again trying to lump the Democrats and Republicans together, proporting himself to be the only real "change" candidate. If we as a public haven't learned how vastly different noble prize winning Al Gore is from George Bush then maybe it's our fault if we fall for Nader's rhetoric again. Lastly, Nader says that his running for president displays the importance of a multiple party system. However, the truth is, is that he has done nothing but extreme damage to the idea of a multiple party system. His third party presidential candidacies have led to zero changes that were part of his platform. Quite the opposite actually. Most Americans probably view a third party as less of an agent of change and more as an agent for spoiling elections. He is making third parties look like fringe lunatics, and that is a terrible diservice for America. Wake up Ralph Nader.

How many times must he try to run for president before he realizes that his attempts are futile? If you are trying to make a point about ending the stranglehold of the two-party system Nader, I think your point was already made in the last few elections. All the other parties out there like the green party, libertarians, peace & freedom, etc. always have bids for the presidency like they are allowed, but any hope for them to actually win is a joke. If you really want to help your small parties you should concentrate more on winning local and state positions first, showing what good your party can do, build a larger base, and prove to the American people what your party stands for. Until then, be prepared to be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I don't like a two-party system, but until there is a third party that can create a vast network of elected officials then that is what we are stuck with.

Is anyone who argues he's not a republican familiar with spies and undercover agents? They're not exotic roles in a James Bond movie, undercover agents are as common and domestic as every local police force. Actors in Hollywood? People who make a living being professionally disingenuous? Ever heard of insurance doctors who, after taking the Hippocratic oath to heal people, are paid twice the exam fee by insurance companies to DENY patients treatment to maximize profits? Or the PR camps and "researchers" for companies that make unhealthy or addictive products who will look right into a camera and say that there's nothing wrong with their products? I'm just saying that Nader might be "Green party", or he might be getting paid to play one on TV. Politicians switch their stances constantly to get paid. One prominent ex-POW comes to mind...

You can disagree with Nader's motives until the cows come home, but the people I knew who voted for him in the first George W Bush election (who I begged not to right down to when we were standing together in line at the polls) only to see GWB get elected have regretted it ever since. For all the Obama supporters that keep crying about Hillary potentialy splitting up the Democratic party, if the Democratic party is going to split, it's going to split and Hillary has no more to do with it than Obama.

To assert that Hillary would be the cause of such a split is to give her way too much credit (which Obama supporters don't believe in giving anyway).

The problem with the Democratic party is not Hillary Clinton, but rather the party itself. I switched from Democrat to Unaffiliated last summer because I'm sick and tired of the Democrats not having a backbone and the two party bullshit.

The idea that you have to belong to either the Republican or the Democratic party in this country or you don't count, the idea that you should fall lock in step behind whatever idiot a party nominates as their candidate is a load of crap.

One of the biggest problems this country has had for a long time is this two party system. This country needs a third party to give people in this country an actual choice.

Let Hillary drop out at some point as all of the Obama supporters keep urging, then Obama will have to go up against McCain and Nader, neither of whom are going to try to be so delicate with Obama like Hillary has.

McCain and Nader could care less about hurting Obama or his supporters feelings. For the first time since this campaign started Obama is going to actualy end up being vetted and tested and everyone is going to see him for the fraud he really is.

Well the truth is that Ralph also sent NH into Bush's column in 2000. Those 4 electoral votes would have given Gore the election and made Florida and Katherine Harris, moot. I guess one has to wonder how Ralph can rationalize all of the resulting pain of that November and December, as well as the horrendous, unintended consequences of the subsequent 7 years. With an electorate so split (it was obvious that this was to be a close election) and in an election in which he knew that he had no chance of winning, he still could have had the satisfaction of knowing that he had made his point, while throwing his support to Gore in that final week. He would have come out of the entire process as a hero. Instead, no matter his protest, he will be remembered as the ultimate spoiler in the history of American politics.

With all of that said, and with the admission that I am an Obamaphile of the first order (having drunk the Kool-Aid back in 2004, with it sustaining me ever since), I have to say that I agree with Gary Shear. I doubt that this election is the same as 2000; this is not a 50/50 electorate. Obama will either win big or be blown away (I predict and hope for the former but I could see a course of events that could lead to the latter). I welcome Mr. Nader to the debate and have to admit that had Hillary gotten the nomination (still a remote possibility) I would have found a place for my vote in his candidacy; I see little difference between Hillary and McCain (I know, I’m a hypocrite…at least I’m an honest hypocrite; I find consistency can be stultifying and boring). I only hope that if the election in November is perceived to be close, that Mr. Nader has the good sense this time to make the right difference and help to elect Obama.

The people who are not kool-aide drinking Nader apologists have realized what a disaster his candidacy was in 2000, and even with an uninspiring Kerry candidacy in 2004, Nader was a non-factor. If you're a died in the wool progressive who wants change, you have Obama. If you're a sensible Republican, you have McCain. If you're a movement conservative Republican...well, feel free to find your own third Party candidate (tee-hee, tee-hee). Nader's constituency (all five of them), will amount to a hill of beans. I can't see disgruntled Clinton supporters voting for him in any numbers that matter.

The debate will be, Is Nader relevant given his part in the last election? The dynamics in this election are completely different.

He has the right to run, but make no mistake this is NOT a true 3rd party choice. He is running to keep his name and "cause" in the public eye, to ride the coat tails of the media attention "Real Candidates" are getting.

He and his supporters would do well in understanding the nuisances of this election. While his tactics and arguments will play well when compared to McCain's style there may be a back lash if he adopts an antagonistic and "holier than thou" attitude with the Obama campaign.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out; I sincerely believe that he may find that himself in the same predicament HRC found herself when she and her supporters went negative. Hopefully the media will not focus on his presence as a spoiler but whether or not he has the legitimacy to mount this type of a campaign.

Unless there is an earth shattering event that changes the current trending, Barack Obama will be the Democratic Candidate. The level of enthusiasm and grassroots support which the Obama campaign has enjoyed is something which has not been seen in decades and Nader is underestimating its scope and depth.

People who want a REAL change will make it very plain to him and his organization that to act as a road block to either the 1st woman or person of color becoming president borders on treasonous and does him and his cause the highest disservice possible.

The average American would do well to at the very first sign of abuse from Nader to inundate his website and organization with emails expressing their desire he step down and let America make history.

Thank goodness someone else realizes that the top 4 Presidential candidates are just MORE of the same and do not represent real change. We need a real change. Do you really think that Obama/McCain/Clinton/Huckabee are really going to change anything? The top 4 candidates talk a good game but we need more than better management and fancy oration. We need different ideas and solutions that address the real problems. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader asking questions and raising issues would BOTH shake things up ...... and goodness knows we need it BADLY. The economy is tanking, we are spending ourselves into bankruptcy both at home and abroad, the Patriot Act is still here with us, the war in the Middle East that is maiming children, immigration is a disgrace , and the Federal Reserve's policies are NOT helping. We need someone to raise the issues that need facing. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader may not win but they will MAKE the Dems and Repubs talk about reality, as well as make detailed and specific proposals. Thank goodness we live in a country that allows for open debates from everyone on ALL the major issues. Our current Congress and President are in my opinion quite clueless. They are caught up in a system controlled by the military/industrial/financial complex that is leading us to ruin. The common man is going to get screwed if we do not wake up soon. Go Paul and Nader!!

Somebody wake me up when this nightmare ends...... We have the old and venerable 71 year old John McCain leading the way on the GOP side. We have the aging and angry Hillary Clinton (in her 60s)who like McCain has been a poltical iron horse for decades. Now we have the 74 year old Ralph Nader, champion of the Green Party and worn out environmentalist ready to join in this race. Wow! What more could we ask for......Too bad George Burns has passed away. Jimmy Carter could still make a run, I think he has another campaign in him. We will need to ensure we have plenty of wheel chair ramps and on hand and allow for naps during the debates. We really need to get a reality check here. It is time for the old line politicians to start heading to the sidelines. We appreciate their service, for the most part. Some of it has been questionable but we appluad their efforts. We don't need a field of senior citizens and aging politicians in 2008. Please somebody tell McCain, Hillary and Ralph to step back, go take some extra naps and let this nation move on.

What amazes me is that people really think that anybody outside the R and D party should not run, and that only these two letters next to a candidate counts! How smug of these parties, and silly and shallow of people who believe that somehow this is an entitlement. It is one thing to criticize Mr. Nader or explain why he is not a good candidate, but completely another to label him as a spoiler, unreasonable, egomaniac, etc. But Republicans and the Democrats have really developed this attitude of entitlement in a land that claims to value diversity and freedom of expression. I'd love to see a strong debate betweeen Obama, McCain, Ron Paul and Ralph Nader. I hope Mr. Paul becomes Independent or a candidate for Libertarian party after the Republican primaries. This way we can see a four party contest - and above all "scrutiny of some real alternatives, other than mere opposing and/or reactive positions"! It amuses me that Americans are so afraid of real independence of mind, expression and ideas that they want to stick to a two party system - even in debates - out of sheer desperation, comfort, fear, apathy, and an old rigid thinking. Unbelievable! Americans can learn from other countries that are truely democratic - not just oppositional and extreme. If they cannot even include Ron Paul and Ralph Nader in debates one can only imagine how real independent out-of-the-box minds are going to treated in the future anywhere! Is another civil unrest around constitutional right to organize and express going to occur?

Well, its about time that someone else entered the race with a bigger ego and a mission to nowhere other than Mike Huckabee. Ralph Nader has to realize that if his movement or should I say soap box insanity, rallied behind the Democratic nominee the past elections then he might have a few more of his initiatives passed. Other than working for consumers, all the man has done is pass nearly unenforceable environmental law...at this moment in time, its not gonna put food on my table, lower my college loan interest rates, or get my friends home from Iraq. So needless to say, his candidacy is an absolute sham. Don't get me wrong, if you want to run for President go ahead, but the general election is way to important to both parties to have a one issue candidate taking votes from either side.
