much as I respect Nader for being one of America's greatest consumer advocates, I think now he is blind to the real effects of his actions. He still denies that his participation in 2000 had anything to do with Gore's loss. Yes, Gore lost that election for many reasons, he should have won Tennessee, he should have won Arkansas, and yes he did win Florida. Nader was not the only reason Gore lost in 2000, but he was one of the reasons (and the exit polling numbers prove this beyond a doubt). Without Nader, Gore would have won the popular and electoral vote outright in Florida and the Republicans would not have been able to wrest it from Gore. Like in 2000, Nader is once again trying to lump the Democrats and Republicans together, proporting himself to be the only real "change" candidate. If we as a public haven't learned how vastly different noble prize winning Al Gore is from George Bush then maybe it's our fault if we fall for Nader's rhetoric again. Lastly, Nader says that his running for president displays the importance of a multiple party system. However, the truth is, is that he has done nothing but extreme damage to the idea of a multiple party system. His third party presidential candidacies have led to zero changes that were part of his platform. Quite the opposite actually. Most Americans probably view a third party as less of an agent of change and more as an agent for spoiling elections. He is making third parties look like fringe lunatics, and that is a terrible diservice for America. Wake up Ralph Nader.

Ralph Nader announces presidential We could only hope then he will muzzle his darn wife.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Perhaps news of Nader's run should finally draw attention to our out-of-date electoral system, where the candidate with the most votes wins even if no one has a majority. We could solve this problem by adopting instant runoff voting (IRV). IRV is a simple and more fair way to vote: First, you rank your choices in order of preference. Then, the first choices are counted, and if someone gets a majority, they win; but if no candidate gets a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their supporters' votes count for their second choices instead. IRV is so simple, common-sense, and democratic that both the major parties' front-runners, McCain and Obama, publicly support it. You can learn more at: www.fairvote.org.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

i think everybody knows that a vote for nader is a vote for the trash can. you can see this by the dimishing returns of votes from 2000-2004.
at one time he was a good thing for the green party, but now he is such a joke the green party needs to ditch him. that is assumeing of course there is someone besides nader left in the party. why else would you trot the same loser out every election.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

whatever, ralphie. you aren't going to take nary a vote from barack obama, so do your thing. maybe you'll give those folks who're holding their noses and backing mrs. clinton someone to vote for after she drops out of the race on march 5. but trust that obama's not fretting his entrance in the race one tiny bit. and neither are those of use who support him.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Ralph Nader has all the political relevance this year of a Gary Hart for President T shirt.
Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Well the truth is that Ralph also sent NH into Bush's column in 2000. Those 4 electoral votes would have given Gore the election and made Florida and Katherine Harris, moot. I guess one has to wonder how Ralph can rationalize all of the resulting pain of that November and December, as well as the horrendous, unintended consequences of the subsequent 7 years. This guy must be senile or something. I don't even know how he even got on meet the press. This man has had 18 months to jump in and give the world his opinions on what's wrong with the politics of today. I wouldn't let him engage in any of the debates to Hillary or Barrack. It's like Hillary and Barrack have been running the mile race, and they are on their last lap and Nader decides to put his SKECTERS on and say I’m in the race now. This is crazy Dennis Kucinich had to take Nevada to Court to try and get into a debate in how the heck is this person feels that he deserves to be on the circuit this late in the game. Ralph Nader there is no demand for you if you felt that strong about running you should have put your hat in the ring 18 months ago. Please do us a favor, and go back to your little cave and don't come out. You have nothing at this point and time to offer the American people but more confusion. Everything that you talk about on meet the press you should have been saying 18 months ago. You have nothing to offer this country in these typs of OLD TIRED POLITICS.. ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THERE ISN'T AN INDEPENDENT PARTY IS BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE WHO ARN'T WILLING TO GO THE MILE... IF THE PEOPLE BELIEVED IN YOU!! YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN RECEIVING BIG DONATIONS FROM THE BEGINNING. He isn't going to impact the race. After getting stuck with Bush because of Florida, there is no way people will make that mistake again.
Anyway, I welcome anyone over 70 who wants to get into the game at this point. Can you imagine the contrast that will be evident in a debate between Obama and these two?
I've been careful so far in letting myself get too excited about Obama. Mainly because I thought the Clintons were going to be way tougher than they were. At this point, I don't think there is any question who will win the Dem nomination and later the presidency. Obama has demonstrated planning, financing, management and political instincts that are far superior to anyone else out there.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

GO NADER, YOU ARE THE TRUE PEOPOLE'S CANDIDATE.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

I hear an embarrassing moment coming for Ralph. The younger votes he affected in 2000 see what supporting him cost their families and their lives. If he thinks he has their energy or their ear, he is very mistaken. Our world has changed, but he has not changed with it. His style reminds us of McCain, and the fact they've tried and failed for what will be the third time will create a rally around Obama the likes we've never seen. He just reinvigorated Obama's troops. This election will not be close. He just got the Dems to circle the wagon even tighter.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Robert J. Two sizes do not fit all when the two major parties do not address all the issues needing attention for some decades now. The democrats did not complain when Ross Perot handed Clinton two victories by taking votes from Bush I.
Even Obama calls Mr. Nader an heroic figure.
Mr.Nader has done more good for our country as a public citizen and his record and accomplishments of over fifty years are proof positive. The promise of america is for citizens to particpate in their democracy and not to be told by political parties that they cannot participate. Ralph Nader represents the best of american democracy when he will step forward and welcome all the slings and arrows from those who would curtail his and our rights to participate. Ralph has never needed the popular approval to do the right thing. The hypocrisy of the Obama cult of zealots and Obama himself, has been unmatched by anything I've ever seen in politics, even worse than the GOP! I am an Obama supporter but have absolutely no problems with voting for Senator Clinton should she win the nomination. I cringe at the over confidence of many of my fellow Obama supporters. Anything can happen in an election, especially this election. But the way I see it there is no choice for any thinking realistic person but to vote for the Democratic nominee. All democrats should be smiling widely at our prospects and the quality of our candidates. NO democrats should be saying anything so bad enough about the other candidate that they can't take back and come out 110% for the nominee. Bet that ticket would get more votes than team Clinton and maybe even win.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Ralph, you've run 4 unsuccessful campaigns for President in the past ('92, '96, '00 and '04). What do you hope to achieve by running a 5th time?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Any consumer advocate should be fully aware of the incredible waste of money he's about to undertake!

At least supporters of Senator Obama and Senator Clinton can't trade barbs over who has the least experience now...Nader's got that title hands down.

Ralph Nader's greatest achievement is a book that killed a perfectly good car. Maybe we should rename your campaign after that book?

"Unsafe In Any Office"

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

yawn...

The people who are not kool-aide drinking Nader apologists have realized what a disaster his candidacy was in 2000, and even with an uninspiring Kerry candidacy in 2004, Nader was a non-factor. If you're a died in the wool progressive who wants change, you have Obama. If you're a sensible Republican, you have McCain. If you're a movement conservative Republican...well, feel free to find your own third Party candidate (tee-hee, tee-hee). Nader's constituency (all five of them), will amount to a hill of beans. I can't see disgruntled Clinton supporters voting for him in any numbers that matter.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

J. We need a real change. Do you really think that Obama/McCain/Clinton/Huckabee are really going to change anything? The top 4 candidates talk a good game but we need more than better management and fancy oration. We need different ideas and solutions that address the real problems. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader asking questions and raising issues would BOTH shake things up ...... and goodness knows we need it BADLY. The economy is tanking, we are spending ourselves into bankruptcy both at home and abroad, the Patriot Act is still here with us, the war in the Middle East that is maiming children, immigration is a disgrace , and the Federal Reserve's policies are NOT helping. We need someone to raise the issues that need facing. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader may not win but they will MAKE the Dems and Repubs talk about reality, as well as make detailed and specific proposals. Thank goodness we live in a country that allows for open debates from everyone on ALL the major issues. Our current Congress and President are in my opinion quite clueless. They are caught up in a system controlled by the military/industrial/financial complex that is leading us to ruin. The common man is going to get screwed if we do not wake up soon. Go Paul and Nader!!

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Great someone I like and can respect to vote for. We have the aging and angry Hillary Clinton (in her 60s)who like McCain has been a poltical iron horse for decades. Now we have the 74 year old Ralph Nader, champion of the Green Party and worn out environmentalist ready to join in this race. Wow! What more could we ask for......Too bad George Burns has passed away. Jimmy Carter could still make a run, I think he has another campaign in him. We will need to ensure we have plenty of wheel chair ramps and on hand and allow for naps during the debates. We really need to get a reality check here. It is time for the old line politicians to start heading to the sidelines. We appreciate their service, for the most part. Some of it has been questionable but we appluad their efforts. We don't need a field of senior citizens and aging politicians in 2008. Please somebody tell McCain, Hillary and Ralph to step back, go take some extra naps and let this nation move on.

Mike

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

What amazes me is that people really think that anybody outside the R and D party should not run, and that only these two letters next to a candidate counts! How smug of these parties, and silly and shallow of people who believe that somehow this is an entitlement. It is one thing to criticize Mr. Nader or explain why he is not a good candidate, but completely another to label him as a spoiler, unreasonable, egomaniac, etc. But Republicans and the Democrats have really developed this attitude of entitlement in a land that claims to value diversity and freedom of expression. I'd love to see a strong debate betweeen Obama, McCain, Ron Paul and Ralph Nader. I hope Mr. Paul becomes Independent or a candidate for Libertarian party after the Republican primaries. This way we can see a four party contest - and above all "scrutiny of some real alternatives, other than mere opposing and/or reactive positions"! It amuses me that Americans are so afraid of real independence of mind, expression and ideas that they want to stick to a two party system - even in debates - out of sheer desperation, comfort, fear, apathy, and an old rigid thinking. Unbelievable! Americans can learn from other countries that are truely democratic - not just oppositional and extreme. If they cannot even include Ron Paul and Ralph Nader in debates one can only imagine how real independent out-of-the-box minds are going to treated in the future anywhere! Is another civil unrest around constitutional right to organize and express going to occur?

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Nader challenges people. THE ONLY THING I HAD TO DO WAS BLOW IN AND DESTROY THE LIVES OF AS MANY AS I CAN JUST BECAUSE I COULD. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE HAD ANOTHER NAME "RALPH NADER". IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FITTING. ALL OF YOU PEOPLE WHO HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THIS DECISION TO RUN BY THIS SO CALLED CONSUMER ADVOCATE IS ONLY PROVING THAT YOU COULD'NT DECIDE FOR YOURSELVES. IT TOOK AN OLD REPEATER TO HELP YOU OUT BECAUSE YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO FIGURE THIS ONE OUT FOR YOURSELVES. WELL FOR THE MCCAIN VOTERS THIS SHOULD MAKE YOU HAPPY, BUT TO ALL OF THE OBAMA AND CLINTON VOTERS IF YOU DECIDE TO GIVE NADER YOUR EMPTY VOTE(A VOTE THAT DOES NOT COUNT FOR ANYTHING) THEN YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. I WAS UNDER TO EMPRESSION THAT YOU ALL WANTED YOUR VOTE TO COUNT, SO IF YOU ARE GIVING YOUR VOTE TO NADER WHY WASTE THE HIGH AMOUNT OF GAS MONEY IT WILL COST YOU TO GO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE FOR NOTHING. THIS ELECTION IS TO IMPORTANT AND TO CRITICAL TO PLAY THESE IDIOTIC GAME ALONG WITH NADER JUST TO MAKE YOUR LITTLE POINT. NADER HAS BEEN MAKING THE SAME POINTS FOR YEARS AND WHEN WE HAVE A PRESIDENT IN THE WHITE HOUSE HE SEEMS TO DISAPPEARS UNTIL THE NEXT ELECTION WHERE HE COMES OUT OF THE WOODWORKS TO START SOME MORE CRAP AND HAND THE WHITE HOUSE THE WHATEVER REPUBLICAN IS RUNNING. IF HE IS GETTING MONEY FROM THE REPUBLICANS TO RUN WHO DO YOU THINK HE IS BEHIND TO WIN. THINK PEOPLE THINK, THINK, THINK, BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ONLY REGRET IT BUT YOU WILL GET JUST WHAT YOU DESERVE. NO CHANGE.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Stopping Ralph Nader is actually very simple in this election. Because he is running as an independent, he does not get automatic inclusion on the ballots in most (if not all states). He has to petition the state to let him on the ballot. Don't sign his petitions. Don't believe his lines about full inclusion. Ralph Nader and all of us have one thing in common: We are not going to be President of the United States. Why is he wasting his time?

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Ralph Nader is the EMBODIMENT of INSANITY.
Doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.
Go Away Nader!

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Well, its about time that someone else entered the race with a bigger ego and a mission to nowhere other than Mike Huckabee. Ralph Nader has to realize that if his movement or should I say soap box insanity, rallied behind the Democratic nominee the past elections then he might have a few more of his initiatives passed. Other than working for consumers, all the man has done is pass nearly unenforceable environmental law...at this moment in time, its not gonna put food on my table, lower my college loan interest rates, or get my friends home from Iraq. So needless to say, his candidacy is an absolute sham. Don't get me wrong, if you want to run for President go ahead, but the general election is way to important to both parties to have a one issue candidate taking votes from either side.

Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

I knew that there was someone Obama remined me of!

And Obama's quick response of "He seems to have a pretty high opinion of his own work" proves
he recognizes their similarities.

Obama, walk the talk....equal opportunity for all...
Nader has caught the fever "Yes We Can"...you got him inspired and excited about this election!!!
Nader, welcome to the movement.
