That is one of the concerns that I think many people have with Obama's background...not that he IS or ISN'T muslim, but that the perception of him as a sympathizer, by not only our people but abroad as well, is what is so dangerous. Clearly, the entire world is forming opinions and plotting actions based on the perceptions portrayed by the media. I would think that they would be more afraid of Barack Obama than Clinton or McCain. Al Qaeda depends heavily on a certain amount of toleration from Muslims who are less extreme. As a man of faith and a candidate of unity, Obama is a natural to appeal to Muslim moderates who are not as fixated on America-hating or Christian-hating as al Qaeda wishes they were. His Muslim name and heritage are as likely to hurt him as to help in that endeavor, but it's got to be done, and he's certainly better positioned than either of the other candidates to do it.

The very fact that Obama is doing so well is really sifting the gold from the dirt. The spectulations raised about Obama's religion and links to supposed radicals are not magically falling from the sky. They have to come from the people most threatend by him and his abilities. I believe this dirt has come from one group that is digging as close to hades as possible in hopes of finding a miracle. The last time I checked hades was not in the miracle business.

This dirt has now fanned the flames of American hatred once again. How is this a demonstration of superior exerience in foreign policy? First it was the comment about Putin having no soul(his come back was priceless), now this. At this rate America will never be able repair foreign relations. I believe no matter what you do some of those monsters would still want to blow people up. On the other hand, some nuts no this side of the isle would want to make peace with anyone. If you leave it up to such extremists, it would only be wars like old times. These people have the attitude that only them should exist and anyone else should submit to their will. I simply hope good people with good intentions will rise up and face any smear tactics and vow not live in fear. The youths were always criticized for not taking part in the political process. In a report on MSNBC, McCain is crying about his "100 year war in Iraq" remarks being distorted. He is one to speak! He is distoring the snot out of Sen. Obama's response to Tim Russet's Iraq hypothetical in the recent debates.

The hypothetical proposed by Russert was: if in the years to come, a sovergn Iraq asks that all US troops be removed from within its borders, would a Pres. Obama still reserve the right to strike Al Queda in Iraq?

Sen. Obama rightly responded that he would reserve the right to stike anyone anywhere that threatens US security. John McCain is distorting Sen Obama's response as if Sen. Obama was the one who suggested the hypothetical in the first place.

Anyone who watched the debate knows that Sen. Obama was merely addressing a hypothetical future scenario proposed by Russert. Sen. Obama at no point sugessted that there was no current presence of Al Queda in Iraq - although John McCain's distortion suggests just that. John McCain should not be crying about distortions when he is engaging in such Rovian tactics himself. And McCain still stands by his remarks that US Troop presence in Iraq could continue for 50 - 100 years so I don't see the distortion.

Sen. Obama's response was the correct response, and I for one am glad that he will reserve the right to stike terrorists that threaten the US wherever they are - be it Pakistan, Iraq or anywhere else. I am equally glad that Sen. Obama stood up to McCain's distortion and was quick to point out correctly that the Republican leadership's bungling of Iraq and it's pre-imptive invasion IS THE CAUSE of Al Queda in Iraq. There would be no Al Queda in Iraq if it weren't for the Republican's huge strategic disaster and foreign policy blunder in Iraq.

The fact that needs to be clarified about Obama is that his grandfather and father were Muslims. According to the Koran, that makes Obama a Muslim even if he chooses to practice a christian faith.

This can be very dangerous for Obama as the fanatics will only be further enraged by what they will view as a traitor. He and the people around him will have to be double protected.

Now, regarding Obama's statement about Iraq:
In the summer of 2002, Zarqawi was reported to have settled in northern Iraq, where he joined the Islamist Ansar al-Islam group that fought against the Kurdish-nationalist forces in the region. He reportedly became a leader in the group, although his leadership role has not been established. According to Perspectives on World History and Current Events (PWHCE), a not-for-profit project based in Melbourne, Australia, "Zarqawi was well positioned to lead the Islamic wing of the insurgency when the March 2003 invasion took place.

CONCLUSION:

Obama does not even know al-Qaida WAS in Iraq before what he calls "the misguided" war started. That was part of the reason why Bush went into Iraq. Saddam hated the USA and even tried several times to kill Clinton and Bush the elder. And al-Qaida was there too just after 3000 people died in 911.

Debriefings of key leaders of the former Iraqi regime indicate that Saddam distrusted Islamic radicals in general, and al Qa’ida in particular… Debriefings also indicate that Saddam issued a general order that Iraq should not deal with al Qa’ida. No postwar information suggests that the Iraqi regime attempted to facilitate a relationship with bin Ladin. (p. 105)

Conclusion 5:… Postwar information indicates that Saddam Hussein attempted, unsuccessfully, to locate and capture al-Zarqawi and that the regime did not have a relationship with, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi. (p. 109)

The simple fact of the matter is that Senator McCain has failed to recognize the reality in Iraq. Foreign terrorists only became a threat after the invasion, and even then, according to the military, they constitute less than 2% of the violence in Iraq. This number has reportedly dropped since Sunni tribes became active in weeding out foreigners.

Ultimately, McCain's assertion that al Qaeda would take over Iraq is nothing short of silly. Foreign fighters have few allies among the powerful Sunni Tribes and the Shiite militias (backed by Iran) would obliterate any Al Qaeda base before the U.S. even had to lift a finger. The only concern about Iraq is how we're going to maintain peace between the Sunni Tribes and the Shiites. This, however, is a diplomatic matter, and the question we need to ask is if we want to pour another trillion dollars into the black hole that is Iraq. If you think this financial strain is not contributing to the credit crunch and the coming recession, you're kidding yourself. The occupation of Iraq is causing America to crumble from within and it is compromising both our military and economic security. It is in our national security interest to withdraw, regardless of any temporary resurgence of Iraq's civil war.

Yes Virginia racist are alive and well in america but i have great hope for the young people of this country because they have finally woke up and will vote in droves for change. I remember as a teenager how excited i was when bobby kennedy started to look like he was going to lead this nation. Almost every young person was on board and it was really pretty cool. I get so tired of having to defend Obama's patriotism -- sworn in on the family bible, doesn't believe in superficial 'wearing of flag pins', instead believes it is more important how you demonstrate your patriotism (after 9/11 many people wore those pins but where not necessarily a patriot).

His grandfather taught him to say the Pledge of Allegiance and put his hand over his heart when he was 2 years old. He also told him that he should sing during the National Anthem (which is what was happening in the widely circulated photo). He rightly says that if people believe they should place their hand over their heart during the National Anthem that there are a lot of NON-PATRIOTS AT ANY FOOTBALL GAME.

I think it is SHAMEFULL (can't think of a stronger word) we have bloggers so filled with hate that they are willing to stir up others, with no respect for a differing opinion; and increase the danger of an attack on the U.S. or the assassination of one of our public servants who each love their country and aspire to be President to make a difference with their life (e.g. Dr. Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy). Personally, I have great respect for any person who is will to put themselves in this type of danger for the benefit of others.

Politics is a dirty business. I just hope that people think before they start spreading lies and what the REAL consequences will be for all of us. My prayer is that ALL people can live in peace and have respect for those who don't look like us or have a different religion.

God Help Us! Obama may be the opportunity of our lifetime to help us move beyond these divisions.

Obama will remail strong for one reason,...he's a leader and has charisma...plain and simple. Poor uneducated whites and mexicans who have only their skin to make themselves feel better psychologically about themselves, will have to find another crutch and realize you're on the bottom because of your lack of acheivement, besides...the country needs a bottom class, so ...get use to it...it won't be determined by skin anymore but by motivation and accomplishment.

Black Republican, I believe your statement to be true. If you do, then how can you support Obamma? His platform is to make every one economically equal. Punish the doers, reward the stagnant. We need to make sure everyone has oppertunity yes, we can not force success on everyone. There are those not willing to do what must be done, to think we can change that is crazy!!!

Having lived in Islamic countries in the Gulf, North Africa, and the subContinent, I can tell you sadly but honestly that there is a HUGE difference between the fundamentalism of Islam and any other religion. Read the Quran and then compare and contrast it with the Torah or the New Testament or the teachings of Seikhism or Buddhism or any other. Compare the Gospels (Life of Jesus) to the Hadiths (Life and words of Mohammed). You're talking through your *ss in the name of being inclusive and politically correct. Nice...but not the truth or reality. Wake up.
