On this whole Canada-NAFTA thing, the Canadian Embassy has rejected the initial report and is siding with the Obama campaign, saying there is absolutely zero evidence to believe Obama was speaking differently in private than in public. The Canadian Parliament is currently trying to fire the person who started this whole absurd mess.

In March 1992, during his presidential campaign, the Clintons acknowledged that on their 1984 and 1985 tax returns, they had claimed improper tax deductions for interest payments made by the Whitewater Development Company and not them personally.[34] Due to the age of mistake, the Clintons were not obligated to make good the error, but Bill Clinton announced that they would.[34]
Deputy White House counsel Vince Foster looked into this matter, but did not take any action before his death.[34] Almost two years from the original announcement then passed before, on December 28, 1993, the Clintons did make this reimbursement payment, for $4,900, to the Internal Revenue Service. This was done just before Justice Department investigators started seeking the Clintons' Whitewater files. The payment was made without filing an amended return (possibly because the three-year period for amended return filing had passed), but did include full interest on the amount in error, including the additional two-year delay.[34] The Whitewater files in question, publicly released in August 1995, cast some doubt on the Clintons' assertions in the matter, as they showed that the couple were aware that the interest payments in question were by the Whitewater corporation and not them personally.[34]

The Whitewater controversy (also called the Whitewater scandal, Whitewatergate, or often simply Whitewater) was an American political controversy that began with the real estate dealings of Bill and Hillary Clinton and their associates, Jim and Susan McDougal in the Whitewater Development Corporation, a failed business venture in the 1970s and 1980s.
David Hale, the source of criminal allegations against President Clinton in the Whitewater affair, claimed in November 1993 that Clinton, while governor of Arkansas, pressured him to provide an illegal $300,000 loan to Susan McDougal, the partner of the Clintons in the Whitewater land deal.[1] This allegation by Hale was questionable, as it contradicted his own testimony in the original FBI investigation of the failure of Madison Guaranty in 1989, where Hale did not mention Clinton in reference to this same loan. Only after coming under indictment in 1993 for charges in just such a scheme did Hale make allegations against Clinton.[2]
A New York Times article published during the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign reported that Clinton and his wife had invested in and lost money in the Whitewater development project.[3] A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigation resulted in criminal charges against the two principals in the Whitewater project, but the Clintons themselves were never charged. Three separate inquiries found that there was insufficient evidence to charge the Clintons with criminal conduct in the land deal.[4]
The term Whitewater is also sometimes used to include other controversies from the Bill Clinton administration, especially those such as Travelgate, Filegate, and the circumstances surrounding Vince Foster's death, that were investigated by the Whitewater Independent Counsel.[5]

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,

Sen. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.

The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults," "degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."

In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years. The civil case is ongoing, and IPA vigorously denies the allegations.

"This is by far, hands down, the worst case I've ever experienced," said Diane Smason, one of the EEOC lawyers handling the lawsuit. "Every woman there experienced sex harassment, they were part of a hostile work environment of sex harassment. And this occurred from the top down."

Sen. Clinton's spokesman, Howard Wolfson, told NBC News in a statement that the senator decided to keep the funds because the lawsuit is "ongoing" and because none of the sexual harassment allegations has been proven in court.

"With regard to the pending harassment suit, as a general matter, the campaign assesses findings of fact in deciding whether to return contributions," Wolfson said.

Lynn Sweet has been gunning for Obama from the get-go; there is nothing straight-up about her questioning. He wasn't going to allow himself to be trapped. He does need to make nice with the rest of the press though.

Rezko has been raked pretty thoroughly; there has been nothing special Obama has done for the guy that anyone can tell to date. Even Lynn Sweet admits that; she just wants to try him in the national media because he's not her chosen candidate. The case going before the courts today doesn't even involve Obama in the slightest. It is a guilty by association, which really, Clinton supporters, there are plenty of quesetionable relationships and shady funders in HRC's past to fill a holding cell. I don't know if any of them are guilty or not...or if she is, but I hate to hear that it is innocent until proven guilty for her and hanging Obama for Rezko off the bat.

As for Canada, it is pretty much one word over the other. Goolsbee has some anwsering to do internally; perhaps externally. Anyhow, it is no secret the right-wing has been interfering with the democratic primary lately. Idle hands are the devil's playground and they have nothing to do until the Dems are settled.

Let me just say, by the way, that I am truly troubled by the caustic atmosphere between Clinton and Obama supporters.

So much for the greater good. This isn't a game; it is our future. Fact of the matter is that both candidates have major accomplishments under their belts, have excellent policy ideas (which, by the way, Obama had begun formulating before HRC released her platform, so enough with the copying crap), both have significant Senate accomplishments (unless you don't like non-proliferation, assisting injured vets getting the care they need, or transparency in government, Obama has indeed made progress since he has been there).

So this leaves me to believe that the Patty's of this blog is one of two things -- a Republican stoking the fire, or a person uncapable of seeing beyond their own opinions -- exactly what is wrong with this country's politics.

hmmmmmmm...The "great uniter" answers curtly and walks out. He has said he's going to rush into contacting our "enemies", that we need to solve problems with talk. This was just the press corps. What will he do when angry world leaders question him? And, then, on the plane, he avoided the usual small talk with the press. Pouting? Had the press been a little tougher on him all along, we might have seen some of these behaviors sooner. Perhaps, too, that's why he doesn't do audience questions? I know some won't agree with the following comment. However, he avoided directly engaging with Hilary in debates. But, then he makes curt "snipes" at her during stump speeches. Had they really "duked it out", the air might have been cleared. The debate behavior coupled with walking out on the press seems to indicate he is a conflict avoider. Avoiding conflict and being a peacemaker are two different things. I hear Obama supporters saying they don't want the "negativity". Questioning somebody's position isn't being negative. And, if you respond, then maybe you win over the other side. I'm not supporting Obama but I don't "hate" him. But, if he's going to be our President, these kinds of behaviors are very concerning.

Mr. Rezko is now facing trial on corruption charges and there is ABSOLUTELY no connection to Senator Obama as numerous newspaper stories have detailed. I have read many of these numerous newspaper stories, including the lengthy piece the Los Angeles Times published the week before February 5th, 2008. Is the media spun much? Apparently-- why else would they bring this garbage up when it is clear that someone in the Canadian government is trying to mess with OUR elections and this story has been written about so much it is laughable.

Shall we talk about dirt under the rug? If we really had a serious conversation about dirt, we should be talking about Senator Clinton who has many more stories much worse than Mr. Rezko. Why this now? How about talking about the ongoing case in LA right now where Senator Clinton has been sued by Peter Paul? Obama's been putting up with a great deal here, and the public is impressed with his candor, integrity and humanity. Impressed enough to make him the Democratic candidate. Shout all you like, there will be evidence in about thirty hours.

The Rezko thing is a non-story. He received funds from a shady Chicago land dealer. He donated them to charity. No one has alleged that he did the shady guy any favors. Have you never known anyone, even called them a friend, who turned out to be of less than stellar character? I can list several in my own past, but I don't think that impugns my own character.

Rezko also partnered with several reputable Chicago non-profits on projects to provide low-income housing. He hoodwinked lots of good folks. That doesn't have anything to do with Obama's character, which, frankly, impresses me deeply. How many people do you know who would turn down big money law jobs to work in poor neighborhoods at $12,000/year. That's exactly what he did. That's not a photo op, it's not a youth group mission trip. It's two years. That's integrity, and integrity is what we need so desperately.

I have, for too long, endured the divisiveness that continues to erode our country. For too long, have special interest held sway in our government—this alone is criminal. Now, I am sure Hillary Clinton would like to bring our broken country back together, but I fear she simply has too much fight in her personality to be anything other than divisive in her politics as we saw in the last debate, and we continue to see in her negative political attacks. Furthermore, I remember the good and the bad times of the previous Clintons, and no matter how many “super delegates are in their pocket,” I do not wish to revisit those times. I have, for too long endured political speeches that promised only more back- biting once the election was won. However, as I am often reminded, we are all in this together. After all, we are all Americans. Republicans see things one way, Democrats see it another, Independents like myself are wishing for the two opposing sides to come together because WE ARE REALLY ALL ON THE SAME SIDE!—The American Side. Now I do not want socialism, or anything similar to it. What I do want is for my government to work and not be dysfunctional. Obama Bought Home Without Rezko Discount, Seller Says (Update1)

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The couple who sold Barack Obama his Chicago home said the Illinois senator's $1.65 million bid ``was the best offer'' and they didn't cut their asking price because a campaign donor bought their adjacent land, according to e-mails between Obama's presidential campaign and the seller.

The Illinois senator has said he made a ``boneheaded'' move in involving contributor Antoin ``Tony'' Rezko, a Chicago businessman, in the purchase of the property on June 15, 2005.

Rezko's wife, Rita, also an Obama donor, bought the adjoining plot in Hyde Park from the couple, Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick, for the $625,000 asking price, the same day that Obama bought the house for $300,000 less than the asking price. Antoin Rezko was under federal investigation at the time.

Rezko was indicted on unrelated fraud charges 16 months later, in October 2006. Obama has since returned about $85,000 in campaign contributions made or raised by Rezko. Obama's Democratic presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, has questioned Obama's ties with Rezko.

``We still don't have answers about Senator Obama and his dealings with Mr. Rezko,'' Clinton, 60, a New York senator, said in a Feb. 11 interview with the Politico newspaper.

The sellers hadn't previously made their side of the story public out of concern for their privacy, according to Bill Burton, a spokesman for Obama's campaign. They approached Obama's Senate office 15 months ago and agreed to break their silence now through the campaign out of concern that the story was being distorted in the media, Burton said.

Toured Property

Burton said Obama, 46, toured the property with Rezko for 15 to 30 minutes at some point before the purchase. Burton said Obama wanted Rezko's opinion of the property because Rezko was a real-estate developer in the area. Burton said he didn't know when the pre-sale tour occurred.

Burton said a campaign adviser discussed the sale with Wondisford by phone and followed up with an e-mail to Wondisford repeating his points. Wondisford responded: ``I confirm that the three points below are accurate,'' according to the e-mail, provided to Bloomberg News and authenticated through records shown by the adviser.

The e-mail says that the sellers ``did not offer or give the Obamas a `discount' on the house price on the basis of or in relation to the price offered and accepted on the lot.'' It also says that ``in the course of the negotiation over the sales price,'' Obama and his wife, Michelle, ``made several offers until the one accepted at $1.65 million, and that this was the best offer you received on the house.''

Wondisford has declined to talk directly about the matter.

Three Bids

The Obamas submitted three bids: $1.3 million on Jan. 15, 2005; $1.5 million on Jan. 21; and $1.65 million on Jan. 23, according to a copy of the sale contract shown to Bloomberg News. Obama received more than $1.2 million in book royalties and a book advance in 2005, the year he was sworn in to the U.S. Senate, his financial disclosure statement shows.

The e-mail between Wondisford and the campaign adviser also says that the sellers had ``stipulated that the closing dates for the two properties were to be the same.'' In January 2006, Rita Rezko sold the Obamas one-sixth of the lot, for $104,500, to expand their yard. She later sold the rest of the land to Michael Sreenan, who said by e-mail yesterday that he bought it in late December 2006 for $575,000.

Before I categorically rip into this recreated non-story fabrication, let me remind everyone -- Senator Obama IS running a different kind of campaign. He IS practicing what he preaches and not rolling around in the mud. How do I know this? Senator Obama has not once responded to this nonsense by pointing out the numerous scandals both old (see real estate deals, cattle futures) and new and unvetted by the Republican attack machine (Norman Hsu, New York City which showed "0" votes for Senator Obama on election night in 80 precincts, but the subsequent audit showed that in every one of those precincts Senator Obama received significant numbers of the votes cast, President Bill Clinton's questionable relationships with dictators and people who steal from the elderly, otherwise known as InfoUSA, with which he could throw more mud at Senator Clinton than she could every throw his way. I don't know if Senator Clinton (or her husband) are guilty of anything, what I do know is that Senator Clinton isn't making this campaign about their past, present and potential future scandals. What a difference a candidate makes!

On the fabrication, there was a great story about this in the Los Angeles Times. If you read this, you will find as I did that there is nothing to find. The Los Angeles Times wrote an indepth piece on this and then endorsed Senator Obama for Democratic Presidential nominee. This repeated Rezko story is bull.

Given Hillary's record of evasion, secrecy, poor judgements, and shady ties to donors (not to mention her husband's...), I think this little article should be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm sure Hillary and Bill will still claim that they are victims of the media and this story of mostly inuendo will not change that. I find it really interesting that Hillary in the last two debates was practically invited by the media to say face to face to Barack what she claims to be her "differences" with him at her campaign rallies. She didn't. Instead she said "how honored" she was to be with him. Quite odd, really. She prefers to attack people behind their back at the last minute with her ugly rhetoric and fear mongering attack ads. If the United States of America votes for this sort of old Bush/Clinton politics again, after 20 years of it, it will simply show how far we've fallen from the virtues and ideals and hopefulness that made this country great.

Both these stories are non-issues. Obama bought a house that had been on the market for a while for 85% of the asking price. Hardly unusual or shocking behaviour. He then bought an adjoining 10 foot strip of land for the market value. Again, not shocking. And that's pretty much it for the Rezko story.

Then for the NAFTA story, one of his adviser's reassured Canada. So what? Obama wants to renegotiate the environmental and workforce standards - that's an issue with Mexico, it's hardly an issue with Canada. There's no inconsistency there.

And these are the biggest issues that have come up against Obama after months of intense scrutiny. That's it? He bought a house for 15% under the asking price, and one of his advisers spoke to Canada? That's it?

I don't think there's any reason to not vote for him there at all.

I am so saddened as I read these comments...as a Democrat I am now starting to finally believe what the Republicans have been saying all along, that the longer this nomination "fight" goes along, the more beatable our party will be this November.

Can we not focus on our own candidate based on their past life histories, and books, and votes, and the way they carry themselves? These things point to judgment, and wisdom. 1. Reporters are like little old children- they yell at you the same questions over and over, and they exercise great difficulty understanding.

2. During the Regan years, staffers allowed one question and maybe a follow-up at news conferences. Whatever answer Regan gave, however irrelevant, was his final answer (before and after his presidency). Maybe Obama should consider this protocol, since it worked so effectively for Regan (and in light of #1).

3. I don't have an expectation of perfection from this candidate, but at least I do not feel as though there is a systematic manipulation of the truth, something I've see time and time again from George W., Dick, Bill, Hillary, Richard Nixon... I think people actually expect this behavior now... It's been so long since anyone's told the truth in that office.

I think the method of campaigning needs to be modified. Today's technology allows for simpler, yet more accurate dispersion of information to the public.
The exhorbitant cost of campaigning,i.e. advertising, travel, physical exhaustion, stress, etc. are counter-productive. Also, I believe the world is negatively impacted by the "in-fighting" of America's political parties. I believe it is good to have more than one
political party;I also believe it is good to remember that we are all Americans. I believe that standards for becoming President of the United States of America could be assessed in a PAT (Presidential Aptitude Test). The results could be discussed, debated in Congress. Another aspect of a candidate's qualifications would be his legislative record, which should speak for itself. Finally, the popular vote would be the third component of the contest. A series of nationally televised debates over a period of alternating days for two weeks would allow viewers and candidates time to accept/reject presented information.

I firmly believe that the sensationalism surrounding our present campaign practices is working to America's disadvantage in the eyes of the rest of the world. It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. The main focus of the election should be the candidate's ability to lead as demonstrated by past action and credible potential.

Michelle Obama sat on the Chicago Landmarks Commission during the period of time in which the Commission granted the application to split the property into the house she and Obama subsequently purchased and the lot which Rita Rezko subsequently purchased.

Michelle was a member of the Commission from Nov 4th 1998 until she resigned on March 28,2005. The Chicago Landmark Commission will confirm this if you ask them.

From bloggers I believe that there were two applications made concerning the sale of the Wondisford property located in the Kenwood District. The first was to sell and the second was to divide. It is probable that the application to divide was made under the economic hardship provisions available in the online copy of Landmarks Ordinances -- if so a public hearing was required, the application forwarded to the Chicago City Council Finance Committee and from there to the City Council.

What is unclear whether Michelle voted directly on the applications or whether these were assessed by staff and the commission simply rubber stamped them. The commission deals with some 1,800 applications per year the more routine of which are dealt with by staff.

So you can see that spacious lots are part of the ambience they are trying to preserve. Corner lots are subject to increased scrutiny because they have two sides visible by the public which is what the Landmark Commission supervises. The combined property was a corner lot.

So if Michelle voted on the application to separate the lots at a time when she wished to buy the house for a price less than the offering price for the combined house and lot, she had a conflict of interest and should have recused herself.

On healthcare, while she tried to impugn what is essentially a very similar policy, Obama pointed out, in direct response to her questions of "universal coverage," how she planned to enforce a mandate, particularly in the face of evidence in MA that those who do not buy in are *fined* so that not only do they not have the insurance, but they are worse off than before.

My, my, my, my, my. Not only did Obama get a bit testy but, from the looks of this blog, the Obamamaniacs are beside themselves. Did they really think their candidate could float along forever on the hot air of his own oratory, and that he would never, ever be scrutinized closely by the national press? If they are this upset by this rather mild investigation into Obama's history, what do they think will happen if he becomes the nominee and the gloves come off? Do they think the likes of Karl Rove and Co. are going to "play nice" and give him the pass to which he has become accustomed in the past twelve months? If they do, I know a fellow who's looking to sell a nice, profit-making bridge connecting Brooklyn with Manhattan. They can use the tolls to help pay for their candidate's campaign.

I just want to know what happened to the video of the Obama incident with the "mild-so-called harsh questioning" reporters in Texas that you are commenting on. It was out on YouTube (and all over the Internet) in full force one day. I showed it to my husband then the next day it was gone. I searched and searched and nowhere could it be found. I told my college kid son and he was just sure that I wasn't searching correctly -- but every time he ran across mention of it, the message was "sorry, this video has been removed." Of course all of Hillary and Bill's are out there! Hmmmm. A conspiracy on the Internet? Geez, we women might find ourselves removed if we don't keep our mouths shut! Ha! LOL
