She hits him knowing that he’ll get in trouble for hitting back. Right on cue, Clinton’s senior aide Ann Lewis set it up. “I didn’t realize their version of new politics was to recycle old Republican tactics,” she said. If voters put both campaigns in the corner for a timeout, it may hurt Obama more because his claim to be a new kind of above-the-fray candidate means he’s held to a higher standard. If Obama pays no penalty for the fracas, the Clinton folks still take him for a roll in the dirt where he can’t offer his appealing message of hope, change, inspiration, and hope. Clinton, by contrast, reinforces her fighter image.

This is not a new dilemma for Obama. We’ve been talking [about] it for a year. What’s new is that he is under more pressure than ever to punch back. It’s not just that he can’t let Clinton’s attacks hang in the air. He has to show Democrats that he’s a fighter, too…. If he’s going to be the nominee, he’s going to face a lot worse from Republicans — and the barrage will be constant if he’s president.

This is pretty much what everyone knows to be true — Clinton engaged Obama, Obama tried to stay above the fray, Clinton prevailed. Obama therefore is expected to pull off a tricky move — go negative on Clinton while a) enduring Clinton’s mockery about “abandoning the politics of hope”; and b) sticking to the positive message that has gotten him to this point.

But when I read Dickerson’s item last night, I paused on a couple of points that didn’t seem quite right. Obama, for example, “has to show Democrats that he’s a fighter.” That’s true, but I couldn’t help but notice that when Republicans started treating him as the likely nominee, and McCain and Bush started taking a few shots, Obama fought back quickly and quite effectively. (The dust up over al Qaeda in Iraq last week comes to mind.) There didn’t seem to be any hesitation at all.

With this in mind, the problem isn’t necessarily that Obama is reluctant to get aggressive, it’s that he’s reluctant to get aggressive with his Democratic rival.

To be sure, Obama hasn’t exactly been playing bean-bag with Clinton, but I think it’s fair to say that Obama, especially since Super Tuesday, has been restrained in going after his Democratic rival. He had the luxury of doing so — he was winning and had less of an incentive to launch attacks. Clinton needed to catch up, so she became rather relentless. No big mystery here.

On this point, Dickerson argued that Obama has to be able to endure Clinton’s “kitchen-sink strategy,” because it’s only going to get worse. Republicans won’t hold back in the fall, and their unhinged attacks will be more belligerent than anything he’s seen from Clinton. Clinton’s attacks, the theory goes, are a test of sorts — either they’ll “toughen him up” or he’ll fail before it’s too late. If he can’t take it in March, October will be a nightmare.

But just how similar are the circumstances? Jonathan Chait makes a compelling case.

[H]er attacks on Obama are not a fair proxy for what he’d endure in the general election, because attacks are harder to refute when they come from within one’s own party. Indeed, Clinton is saying almost exactly the same things about Obama that McCain is: He’s inexperienced, lacking in substance, unequipped to handle foreign policy. As The Washington Monthly’s Christina Larson has pointed out, in recent weeks the nightly newscasts have consisted of Clinton attacking Obama, McCain attacking Obama, and then Obama trying to defend himself and still get out his own message. If Obama’s the nominee, he won’t have a high-profile Democrat validating McCain’s message every day.

Second, Obama can’t “test” Clinton the way she can test him. While she likes to claim that she beat the Republican attack machine, it’s more accurate to say that she survived with heavy damage. Clinton is a wildly polarizing figure, with disapproval ratings at or near 50 percent. But, because she earned the intense loyalty of core Democratic partisans, Obama has to tread gingerly around her vulnerabilities. There is a big bundle of ethical issues from the 1990s that Obama has not raised because he can’t associate himself with what partisan Democrats (but not Republicans or swing voters) regard as a pure GOP witch hunt.

There’s no reason to think that dynamic will be at all similar in the fall. Obama’s willingness to be confrontational with Republicans seems quite healthy, and I haven’t seen any serious suggestion he’d play patty-cakes with McCain while the Republican Smear Machine is punching him in the mouth. Indeed, the dynamic may very well prove to be the opposite — the GOP will go after Clinton on issues Obama is afraid to touch, meaning she’d have to endure attacks for the first time.

Maybe Obama will effectively engage Clinton in the coming weeks, maybe not. Time will tell. But either way, looking at this as a proxy for what might happen to Obama in the fall seems like a mistake.

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/14812.html

Obama camp: 'different standard'

LOOK WHAT HAS COME OF HIS CAMPAIGN! HOW DARE HE LUMP HILLARY CLINTON WITH GEORGE W BUSH! THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I HOPE AMERICANS FINALLY SEE WHAT OBAMA IS - JUST A SLIMY, SMUG POLITICIAN; HE'S NOT CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN, HE'S A NEW GENERATION OF "SEND YOUR SURROGATES OUT THERE TO DO YOUR DIRTY WORK FOR YOU" AND THEN HE ACTS LIKE HE IS RUNNING A CLEAN CAMPAIGN. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!

Obama camp: 'different standard'

I think that it is crazy to see how this generation and the upcoming one being forged now by our actions/decisions as a nation as to who to put in the White House is being dictated by 'political correctness'...

Why is not ok for people to mention Obama's past drug use, question his heritage, use his middle name or whatever? Federal archivists at the Clinton Presidential Library are blocking the release of hundreds of pages of White House papers on pardons that the former president approved, including clemency for fugitive commodities trader Marc Rich. That archivists' decision, based on guidance provided by Bill Clinton that restricts the disclosure of advice he received from aides, prevents public scrutiny of documents that would shed light on how he decided which pardons to approve from among hundreds of requests. Clinton's legal agent declined the option of reviewing and releasing the documents that were withheld, said the archivists, who work for the federal government, not the Clintons. The decision to withhold much of the requested material could provide fodder for critics who say that the former president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, now seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, have been unwilling to fully release documents to public scrutiny.

Obama camp: 'different standard'

From Time Magazine:

There was a moment in Barack Obama's speech in San Antonio on Tuesday night that encapsulated something important about this year's U.S. presidential primary season. On the night of the Iowa caucuses in January, Obama said, the grandfather of one of his young staffers had stayed up until 5 a.m., watching the returns. The man was 81 years old — and he was in Uganda.

He was not alone. In many U.S. election seasons, the rest of the world doesn't pay much attention to the strange hoopla until the two main candidates have emerged... But this time is different. From Paris to Karachi, Canada to Turkey, interest in this U.S. election season began months ago. Libraries of new books on American politics and political figures have been flying off the shelves in Japan and Italy. Friends of mine (not all of them political junkies) from Australia, India, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa and Britain have all sent me e-mails in recent weeks about the primaries and how exciting they are. My father has been interested in American politics since 1960 and says he has never seen this level of interest so early in the race. "There truly has been nothing like the Democratic battle we are now experiencing," he e-mailed me recently. "Here [in Australia] wherever we go, people want to talk about the two candidates and are taking sides."

In Barack Obama, a biracial son of an immigrant, millions see themselves. "Educated, international-minded Indians get a huge thrill out of Obama," says Shashi Tharoor, a former high-ranking U.N. diplomat and an author and columnist. "He is much more 'one of us' than any previous presidential contender ... An Obama victory would fulfill everything the rest of the world has been told America could be, but hasn't quite been."

... Across the world, the techniques of the candidates are being copied. In Italy, Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni, a candidate for the position of Prime Minister, has taken to lifting lines from Obama, including repeated usage of "Yes we can" in three languages: English, Italian ("Sì, possiamo") and the Italian capital's local dialect ("Se po' ffa'"). In Hong Kong, prodemocracy parties are studying U.S. campaign techniques, in particular Obama's grass-roots youth organizing. "Everyone wants to study how he delivers his message," says Tanya Chan, a District Council representative from the Civic Party.

Obama camp: 'different standard'

Is Hillary's Plan to divide the Part to get on the VP ticket and if not make sure she's hurt Obama enough to ensure he LOSES against McCain and thus she runs for President in 2012 ( a la Reagan).

Newsweek article by Eleanor Clift:

"The two contested nominations of the modern era—Kennedy-Carter in '80 and Reagan-Ford in '76—offer clues as to what may lie ahead. Wake up the only way to get these policies she wants into law is through the senate and congress, did you forget about them. The rupublicans dislike the clintons and the democrates she steps on to get to the whitehouse will not support her so how exactly is she going to get the policies through without unity of the parties, not going to happen ask George Bush. Second, he has a clearly stated withdrawal plan that is somewhat similar to Hillary's although more specific. He has long stated that his goal is to be out within 16 months but has clearly stated that the realities of the situation right now would only afford withdrawal of one to two batallions a month. Now that assessment is based on current conditions and this war is a fluid process. The bottom line is that the president is not and should not be the king making his/her decisions solidarity. Hillary and Obama regardless of who wins would have to sit down with the intelligence of the time and prepare and exit strategy based on that. what both candidates have laid out is a clear plan based on best case scenario options to get out of Iraq. Both candidates are committed (ok at least obama is) to ending this Iraq war mess. He wants to be "as careful getting out as unprepared we were getting in".

Hillary's people like to live by double standards. She can personally attack Obama and even defend McCain but if anything is said about her she becomes the victim. How exactly is asking for her tax returns a personal "Ken Starr" like attack? And why isn't Wolfson held to the same level of scrutiny as Powers?

Obama camp: 'different standard'

Obama Camp,

Evil never wins. We believe strongly that Obama brings the change and enthusiasm that Mississippians, and Americans, desire in order that we might find unity as a nation after a long period of very partisan leadership from both major parties. We admire Obama's ability to get younger voters, as well as non-white voters, excited about turning out to vote. That, added to his remarkable appeal to white voters, including many Republicans, can mean the kind of leadership many Americans, and Mississippians, crave.

Perhaps most of all, we admire Obama's willingness to stand up for what he believes, particularly his stance against a poorly executed war in Iraq, in which many Mississippians lost family members. And we feel secure that he is ready to take the presidency after eight years of George W. Bush and turn the country in the right direction toward fiscal responsibility and renewed hope for the future.

Obama is bringing excitement, and hope, back to politics for many people who had lost it. The Jackson Free Press encourages all eligible voters to vote for Barack Obama in Tuesday's primary election.

http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/comments.php?id=16478_0_27_0_C
Obama camp: 'different standard'

Hillary has a biased and deceitful media machine working on her behalf. Governor Reagan stayed in the fight all the way to the convention. He had a hundred delegates fewer than Ford, roughly the same deficit Clinton has today. As she said on the election trail; voting for her is voting for an ex-presdent. The American experience with Hillary during this election is that she will do anything to win including play the media bias card, the sexism card, the race card, the super-negative destroy Obamas' image at any cost card, and the to hell with the possible damage to the democratic party in november card. I think if the media were really un-biased, she would not be in the race once the mountain of evidence documenting that she actually as little experience in world matters were revealed. She is only riding on the coat tail of Bills' experience. I don't want a President who would do anything to win. Especially if it hurts the reputation and political hopes of a fellow Democratic or a Republican candidate. As an American, I am so tired of the political BS. This nation is in deep trouble no matter what the subject and Hillary is not the person to mend this nation. The RNC of course is playing her like a fiddle and succeeding in damaging the chances of Obama being in a position of streangth in the November contest with Mccain. If everyone plays by the rules, the person with the most delegates, popular vote, and and popularity with the democratic base will be the Democratic nominee and the next president of the country.

Obama camp: 'different standard'

Hillary, "You" have nothing to say on this issue.

"YOU" voted to give Bush approval to invade Iraq and to get us in this mess in the first place.

Therefore, "YOU" should be held just as accountable for the deaths of thousands of Amercians and Iraqis as GWB.

And therefore "YOU" should not even be considered as a viable candidate for the President of the United States.

As goes Bush so goes McCain. Most of those rules are unwritten and are based on common understandings, acceptable practices, and the best interest of the political party a candidate seeks to lead. One of those rules is this: Do not provide ammunition to the opposition party that can be used to destroy your party's nominee. This is a hyper-truth where the presidential contest is concerned.

Email
Print
Comments
By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party's nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.

As a veteran of red telephone ads and "where's the beef" cleverness, I am keenly aware that sharp elbows get thrown by those trailing in the fourth quarter (and sometimes even earlier). "Politics ain't beanbag," is the old slogan. But that does not mean that it must also be rule-or-ruin, me-first-and-only-me, my way or the highway. That is not politics. That is raw, unrestrained ambition for power that cannot accept the will of the voters.

Senator Obama is right to say the issue is judgment not years in Washington. If Mrs. Clinton loses the nomination, her failure will be traced to the date she voted to empower George W. Bush to invade Iraq. That is not the kind of judgment, or wisdom, required by the leader answering the phone in the night. For her now to claim that Senator Obama is not qualified to answer the crisis phone is the height of irony if not chutzpah, and calls into question whether her primary loyalty is to the Democratic party and the nation or to her own ambition.
Obama camp: 'different standard'

Samantha Powers wasn't even a paid adviser, I hope its legal for him to take her advice, she really is a brilliant person.
Blake, Denver, CO (Sent Friday, March 07, 2008 4:38 PM)

**********************************

Maybe she was just mad that she was't getting paid.

Obama camp: 'different standard'

Stop complaining and get AGRESSIVE with her
Especially in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida

Run ads about her 'baggage', Whitewater, FileGate, Monica, Travel Gate, NAFTA, fund raising scandals, Norman Hus, Peter Paul......
Ask the voters if they want 4 years of THAT

Run ads about her support of the Iraq War.....
REMIND people that she VOTED FOR WAR
REMIND people that she VOTED FOR WAR AGAINST IRAN
Tell people that her closest foreign policy advisors all all hawk who want to get us into more wars

GO FOR IT !!

Obama camp: 'different standard'

Hillary Clinton...She is a
Slanghter...Liar...Evil...Twisted...Bully...Dirty with Scandal...

The real Hillary Clinton stood up at the Democratic presidential debate this week: angry, sarcastic, stubborn, secretive, arrogant, mired in the past, victim of the media, and still firmly convinced that she is uniquely entitled to the Democratic Party nomination and the presidency.

That Hillary hasn't really been on display much since the debacle of her disastrous health care plan and the end of Bill Clinton's impeachment trial, when she haughtily flaunted her combative personality.

But make no mistake about it - that's the Hillary Clinton that we'll see if she somehow manages to steal the Democratic nomination.

She's found her voice. The one that so alienated everyone she came into contact with over her health care plan that her own party destroyed it. The one that publicly and loudly defended Bill and arranged for attacks on Monica Lewinsky when she knew the complete and sordid truth.

She's always had a chip on her shoulder and a strange paranoia, but it's definitely gotten worse. Now it's not just the vast right wing conspiracy that is out to get her. Now it's the mainstream media. How are they doing that? By asking her the first questions at the debates!

Hillary's snide comment about whether Barack needed a pillow to be made more comfortable was downright embarrassing. The anticipated applause line on her script never happened. The audience was silent. The press was amazed. And Barack seemed genuinely startled by her nuttiness - he looked over at her as if he was viewing a dotty old aunt at a family dinner, the one that everyone politely humors.

Her lifelong pattern of secrecy was once again evident. While publicly promoting transparency in government, she steadfastly refuses to release her personal income tax returns. That's a clear tip-off that there's something to hide. Recall that the Clintons selectively released tax returns in Arkansas, but refused to go back to 1980, when Hillary had her windfall in cattle futures.

During the debate, Hillary suggested that she'd release the returns "soon," but her staff quickly backtracked. She implied that she's been too busy to deal with releasing the returns. Does she really think anyone believes that it will take more than simply making a copy of the return? She's stalling and there's a reason for that.

Most likely, the return will show how much Bill has been making from his partnership with the Sheik of Dubai and his other business ventures. Should the spouse of a presidential candidate be in business with a foreign leader who needs favors from the U.S. government? Definitely not. That's why we'll never see those returns.

And then there are the Clinton Library records that document her schedule as first lady. She doesn't want them released either because they will definitively show that she was never the co-president. The Library has been stalling on the release of those documents for years. During the debate, she said that she wanted them released as quickly as possible and seemed to blame the Bush administration for the delay. But today, the White House indicated that she had made no requests for any expedited release.

The old Hillary, the real Hillary, is back.

And there's apparently been no one to stop her from acting on her own worse instincts.

Underneath the veneer of the practiced smile and the strategically used giggle, there is a rage that is always close to the surface. It was on display in the debate.

Hillary Clinton is furious that America has not agreed to her coronation. She doesn't understand why voters are rejecting her and embracing Barack Obama. She just doesn't get it.

Never one to engage in self reflection, she can't blame herself or even her incompetent strategists and advisers. They're too close to her. She can't accept the sorry fact that her campaign has been a disaster because it was based on the past and not the future, because it was premised on her phony experience and maintaining the status quo, and because her negative outlook is completely out of step with the mood of America. And finally, because in the positive message of Barack Obama, Americans see a stark contrast with her doom and gloom view of the world.

Obama camp: 'different standard'

bshult: Yeah, now that we've said, let's not say it any more! That's a lot like "So far as I know," isn't it?!?

Obama camp: 'different standard'

As the Tony Rezko trial begins in Chicago, Clinton and her surrogates are linking Obama to Rezko and the media is speculating about whether Obama will be called to testify as a witness in the case. Obama has always admitted he received $85,000 in contributions from Rezko which Obama has now donated to charity rather than keep.

Yet the civil fraud trial of Bill Clinton for defrauduing Hillary’s largest donor in 2000 into giving her campaign more than $1.2 million, pending in Los Angeles courts since 2003, is now preparing for a November, 2008 trial. The discovery that is now proceeding after a February 21 hearing, and the pending trial, have NEVER been announced by the mainstream media.

Hillary was able to extricate herself as a co-defendant in the case in January, 2008 after years of appeals to be protected by the First Amendment from tort claims arising out of federal campaign solicitations she made. Her abuse of the intent of California’s anti-SLAPP law after the California Supreme Court refused to dismiss her from the case in 2004 is emblematic of her contempt for the Rule of Law.

Hillary will be called as a witness in both discovery and the trial according to the trial court Judge who so-advised Hillary’s attorney David Kendall when he dismissed Hillary as a co-defendant in 2007. A subpoena is being prepared this month and will be served personally on Hillary, along with Chelsea, Pa Gov. Ed Rendell, Al Gore and other well known political and media figures.

Yet the media has refused to report about this landmark civil fraud case- brought by Hillary’s biggest 2000 donor to her Senate race, regarding allegations that were corroborated by the Department of Justice in the criminal trial of Hillary’s finance director David Rosen in May, 2005. That indictment and trial was credited as resulting from the civil suit’s allegations by Peter Paul, the Hollywood dot com millionaire Bill Clinton convinced to donate more than $1.2 million (according to the DOJ prosecutors and the FBI) to Hillary’s Senate campaign as part of a post White House business deal with Bill.

The media - except for World Net Daily- has also suspiciously refused to report on Hillary’s last FEC report regarding her 2000 Senate campaign, filed in January 30, 2006. In a secret settlement of an FEC complaint by the plaintiff in Paul v Clinton, Peter Paul, the FEC fined Hillary’s campaign $35,000 for hiding more than $720,000 in donations from Paul, and it required Hillary’s campaign to file a 4th amended FEC report.

In that report Hillary and her campaign again hid Paul’s $1.2 million contribution to her campaign and falsely attributed $250,000 as being donated by Paul’s partner, Spider Man creator Stan Lee, who swore in a video taped deposition he never gave Hillary or her campaign any money.

Lee did testify to trading $100,000 checks with Paul to make it appear he gave $100,000 to Hillary’s campaign (admission of a felony) but none of that has been reported by the “overly critical” media!

Where is the outrage from Obama that the press is engaging in a double standard relating to his possible role in the Rezko trial and his refunding the $85,000 contributed to his campaign by Rezko- which Obama has always admitted taking. The media makes no mention of Hillary’s role as a witness in Bill’s fraud trial for defrauding Hillary’s largest donor- and Hillary’s refusal to refund the $1.2 million she illegally received from Paul, which she has denied taking from Paul ever since the Washington Post asked her about Paul and his felony convictions from the 1970’s before her first Senate election in 2000?

Obama camp: 'different standard'

It's nice to hear this but I want to see Obama take a podium and talk about this. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.

The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults," "degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."

In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years. The civil case is ongoing, and IPA vigorously denies the allegations.

"This is by far, hands down, the worst case I've ever experienced," said Diane Smason, one of the EEOC lawyers handling the lawsuit. "Every woman there experienced sex harassment, they were part of a hostile work environment of sex harassment. And this occurred from the top down."

Sen.
