Barack Obama has only gotten as far
as he has because he's black, actually said something
very similar in 1988 of then-presidential candidate
Jesse Jackson.

This is from an April 14, 1988 Washington Post story
by Howard Kurtz:

Placid of demeanor but pointed in his rhetoric,
Jackson struck out repeatedly today against those who
suggest his race has been an asset in the campaign.
President Reagan suggested Tuesday that people don't
ask Jackson tough questions because of his race. And
former representative Geraldine A. Ferraro (D-N.Y.)
said Wednesday that because of his "radical" views,
"if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in
the race."

Asked about this at a campaign stop in Buffalo,
Jackson at first seemed ready to pounce fiercely on
his critics. But then he stopped, took a breath, and
said quietly, "Millions of Americans have a point of
view different from" Ferraro's.

Discussing the same point in Washington, Jackson said,
"We campaigned across the South . . . without a single
catcall or boo. It was not until we got North to New
York that we began to hear this from Koch, President
Reagan and then Mrs. Ferraro . . . . What she is claiming is very typical of what many white Americans believe: Anytime a black person is recognized in a positive way, it is due only to affirmative action. I have heard this from white people on many occasions. People such as GF seem to believe that whites are fundamentally better than blacks, and a black person being more qualified than a white person is just not unfathomable. Anytime a white person is passed over for a black person, they cry affirmative action. At the same time, they refuse to accept that blacks are passed over for whites as a normal course of business. They refuse to believe that blacks are capable of accomplishing anything great. They pretend to honor great leaders such as MLK and the like, but deep down don’t really think much of them.

Its interesting how people like GF will be the first to accuse blacks of playing the race card, but completely ignore that it is in fact them who are playing the race card -- complaining that Hillary is losing only because she is white.
Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

I think that it's time that we have change. I really want Obama to win the primaries and feel that he would do the better job. However, if Hillary somehow wins the nomination. (Stranger things have happened) my first instinct would be to not support her and abstain from voting. However, after talking with other Obamama supporters, we agree that she is the lesser of two evils. After all, they do have similar views (as much as they both deny it.) They both have similar years of experience and accomplishments. (if you don't count being the first lady as experience). They will both revamp the health system or start to do that. I don't think that it would be productive for them to work together. Maybe at first, but Hilary has went too far in her attacks, and It would be phony. I think that if republicans in PA vote in the elections as Rush Limbaugh says, they should for Hilary, so that she would be an easy target that they are in for a rude surprise. The polls have been wrong before. If Hilary wins, they will always ask themselves what if it was against Barack, maybe I lost it for McCain. Hilary will get all of Baracks votes plus her own. Once the anger subsides. If they vote for Barack because they think that he would be an easier candidate because he is black then they are always going to wonder, would the majority of blacks and hispanics, and other minorities, teachers of all races, (Baracks mom was a teacher) extremely fed up middle income people mid aged people, rich intelligent people, 18 years fresh out of high school who feel they can make a difference, have turned out. It's best they stay out of the race, less they have a guilty conscious. The polls have been wrong before. The superdelegates are being very smart in waiting or changing back and forth. Florida and Michigan broke the rule and thus should accept their fate. If an NFL coach messes up for his team then the whole team may suffer the result by losing draft choices in the future. If an NCAA coach cheats on recruiting, the whole team may be banned from post season play or scholarships for a while. It's sad but sometimes many must suffer bacause of a fool. Such is the case for Florida and Michigan. The only exceptions possible, caucuses will not be approved by Clinton. Obama will not approve votes where she won since he did not get a chance to recruit the first time. The popular vote will win. with the super delegates. If not, this entire process was in vain and a helluva lot of money was wasted on both candidates. I must say I'm sick of the drama from both sides, but I guess that's politics.

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

"*** UPDATE *** Pledged total has been corrected to reflect 1,398 for Obama. 1,394 was the total before the full Mississippi totals were factored in."

Didn't you say the Miss. delegate numbers were 19-14? 5 more Miss. delegates for Obama than Clinton. So why is the new difference only 4 more than the old difference?

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

I wonder if black people are voting for Obama or against Hillary. Normally, I respect others' opinion of any sort.
When I read Geraldine's statements on Obama's race and her false claim of victimization, I wondered aloud whether she has ever studied history.
Does she realize that Sept. 11, 2001, isn't necessarily the worst terrorist attack in America and that lynchings of over 3,400 black Americans and more than 1,200 of their white allies collectively constitutes the worst terrorist attack in America? She must understand that if she wants to play the gender card against Obama by labeling Obama or any of his supporters "sexist," she is rekindling memories of the 19th and early 20th centuries in American history, in which black men were tortured and even killed/lynched merely for disrespecting white women. And if she thinks that sexism is given too much attention over racism, she must have forgotten the horrific history in which black Americans (and I am a white man) suffered and died at the hands of white men and their brainwashed white women. So, Geraldine needs to be careful, as the politics of race only helps to rekindle memories of African Americans' past Holocaust-like (albeit much small in scope than the 6 million Jews killed) sufferings in the name of group superiority and even Christianity, the same ways the Nazis justified killings of innocent human beings.
Of course, sexism is an ongoing problem in almost all human cultures, not just America. If Geraldine believes she is a victim of sexism at the hands of Obama or his supporters, she must truthfully demonstrate that without leveling absurd allegations and playing the race card in the effort to help Clinton. She needs to be reminded that an overwhelming majority of blacks are supporting Obama because they were reminded of their history and disenchanted by Bill and Hillary's race gamemanship and the use of racially charged codes known to African-American community that has suffered for so long under slavery and the Jim Crow years (the only reason I am able to come up with to explain why whites in some states are preferring Clinton even though they are not the victims of slavery and Jim Crow are continuing bigotry and ignorance).
Geraldine must also realize that young people are supporting Obama because they are armed with facts about the history of our nation and are rejecting a culture of bigotry and ignorance displayed by their seniors. Of course, there are young people who have been instilled with the values of their ignorjant and bigoted parents and lack of an objective education.

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

To all you Clinton supporters.
What Hillary Clinton is offering the nation as "solutions" are the Band-Aids prescribed by the DLC when the nation really needs sutures.
Her claims of "experience" are specious to say the least. Probably because he is not. His healthcare plan does not cover everyone. Go read his plan and compare to Clinton's. Which one would you want? The mortgage crisis? Robert “William” Williamson (USN). “Of this I am certain: Senator Obama will do all of those things and much more to ensure the safety and f reedom of our citizens, our allies, and coalition partners. He has all the great qualities and attributes required to carry out the most difficult duties of the Presidency.

“I spent a career involved in coalition warfare, and I am keenly aware of the importance of working with allies,” said Brigadier General (Ret.) James Smith (USAF). “Senator Obama brings a powerful approach to dealing with national security challenges by truly leveraging multinational relationships. He brings a new face of America to the rest of the world."

“Senator Obama has a profound, even scholarly knowledge of our Constitution and he has the deepest respect for the rule of law. As a career naval officer, I trust his judgment, his temperament, and his ability to analyze complex international situations and relationships and to make military decisions that are in the best long term interests of the United States,” said Admiral (Ret.) Don Guter (USN). “It will take the powerful leadership of Senator Obama to forge the consensus we need to right our ship of state, restore our honorable place in the world, and secure the safety of our nation."

“As a child of the Greatest Generation I learned that the attraction, glory and resilience of America come from the principle of “We the People.” In my four decades in the national security arena I developed an increasing appreciation for the intent and expectations of this principle, particularly in terms of the Common Defense and Domestic Tranquility,” said Brigadier General (Ret.) David McGinnis (ARNG). “In recent years, enticed to believe that these roles belonged to a chosen elite, each of us have paid an increasing price in loss of power, liberties, and national treasure. Today, by every measure, our current strategic situation is not good. It is from that perspective I believe only Senator Obama offers us the opportunity to reclaim our Republic, restore our national dignity and ensure our overall security. I salute his leadership, embrace his candidacy, and commend his courage.”

Obama is the grandson of a soldier who marched in Patton’s Army. Throughout his career, he has exercised the judgment and leadership required of a Commander-in-Chief. In 2002, he opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning, cautioning that it could lead to "an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs and undetermined consequences” at a time when conventional Washington was lining up for war. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has worked across the aisle to secure the world’s most dangerous weapons and as a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, he has compiled a record of standing up for America’s troops and veterans, leading a bipartisan effort to improve care for injured troops, passing laws to fight homelessness among veterans, and increase screening for Traumatic Brain Injury. Over the course of the last year, Obama has unveiled a comprehensive national security agenda that includes detailed plans to secure America from the threat of terrorism, responsibly end the war in Iraq and renew American diplomacy to restore our standing in the world.

The following admirals and generals endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president:

Brigadier General Larry Gillespie. Gillespie has led a distinguished 33-year career with the U.S. Army. He served as the Assistant Deputy Commanding General, (ARNG) Army Material Command. He is a recognized authority in many of the technical challenges and solutions associated with Homeland Security and National Defense. As a civilian, General Gillespie has held a series of increasingly important positions with the Air Transport Association, Hughes Aircraft Company, Raytheon Systems Company, NCI, Hampton University, and Eagle Force Association.

Major General Scott Gration (USAF-Ret). General Gration is a retired two-star general and was the Director of Strategy, Policy, and Assessments of the United States European Command in Germany. General Gration was raised in Africa and entered the Air Force in 1974 through the Air Force ROTC program at Rutgers University. He served as a White House Fellow, operations group commander and two-time wing commander. The general served as Director of Regional Affairs in the Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force for International Affairs. General Gration served as the Commander of Task Force West during Operation Iraqi F reedom. His aerial combat experience includes almost a thousand hours of combat time with 274 combat missions over Iraq.

Admiral Don Guter. Admiral Guter served in the U.S. Navy for 32 years, concluding his career as the Navy’s Judge Advocate General from 2000 to 2002. Admiral Guter currently serves as the Dean of Duquesne University Law School in Pittsburgh, PA. He also is executive director of the Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation.

Brigadier General David “Dave” McGinnis. General McGinnis was the Chief of Staff of the National Guard Association of the U.S. McGinnis served as director of strategic plans and analysis for the Honorable Deborah R. Lee, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. He served two tours in Vietnam before leaving the active Army in 1972 and joining the New York National Guard that same year. Probably because he is not. His healthcare plan does not cover everyone. Go read his plan and compare to Clinton's. Which one would you want? The mortgage crisis? Compare Clinton's detailed plan against his. She advocates a 5 years freeze on adjustable mortgage rates. Energy? Obama still doesn't do as much as she does regarding biofuels and caps to protect the environment. In each contest Barack Obama’s percentages of the African American vote has gone up to where in Mississippi it topped 90%. I don’t believe like some would suggest that the party will come together once one of the candidates wins. This race baiting is not about the issues, but is a emotional attack toward a group of people that have faithfully supported this party in every election. This will destroy the party.

I would like to know where the leaders of the Democratic Party are when we’re watching the party being destroyed. Where are you, Al Gore and the Super Delegates when it matters? Missing in action?

Here’s a list where the leadership could have made a difference.

1. Bill Clintons playing the race card in Iowa and South Carolina.
2. Geraldine Ferraro’s racially charged comments on black vs white. Why did you and other leaders not condemn those remarks immediately? Why wasn’t she removed from her post in the Clinton campaign immediately? There is no excuse for those remarks.
3. Then there is the ”as far as I know he’s not a muslim” remark from Senator Clinton.
4. The photo of Senator Obama in tribal dress that was leaked to the press.

This leads me to think that there is no leadership in the Democratic Party or they’re missing a moral compass.

I believe the Clinton campaign has decided since they can’t have enough of the African American vote that they will drive a wedge between black and white Americans. I now have come to believe they would destroy the party for their own personal gain. Shame on us for sitting by and watching the politics of self destruction play out before us.

Six more weeks of this.

Why don’t the Super Delegates take charge and back the candidate of their choice. No, it’s way to easy to sit by and see which way the wind is blowing. That wind is going to blow John McCain right into the White House.

Shame on us.

David Hunter
A 64 yr old white guy from Oregon.

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

Yet another male politician screwing( pun intended) things up. Sadly, people seem to be such partisans that it’s affecting their ability to think clearly or even add. Clinton has ZERO chance of catching Obama in states won and pledged delegates. She has a chance of catching him in the popular vote but that will probably be difficult unless she crushes him in PA, FL and MI; not likely. Perhaps PA voters will put the final nail in the coffin and then the Dems will have time to "heal". Older white women seem to be REALLY taken aback that their girl has lost and seem to be following Clinton's lead that if she can't win, then it's best that McCain does and that it's all Obama's fault. Too funny. Hopefully they will get over their rage/anguish in time to realize that ANY Democrat is better than having another 4 years of Republican rule.

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

Chuck Todd seems a lot more reasonable & balanced nowadays(hope it lasts). He is a real candidate, black or white doesn't matter. Now HRC, I just don't like her. I mean she is living off her husbands name. How can she not win the democratic nomination, plain and simple...people are tired of the same old crap! We saw this with Bush in 2000, it wasn't Bush who beat Gore. It was Bore that beat Gore! IF the rest of the primaries and delegates were divided 50/50, highly unlikely, (including FL and MI, who should NOT count and those voters should take thier frustrations out on their Govenors and Senators, not the DNC!), Hilary is NOT going to win. No Democrat can. Therefore it follows she knows the score and would rather have McCain in 2008 deluding herself that means a second chance in 2012.

She shouldn't count on the Clintons having the upper hand in the Dem party by then if they manage to lose us this electio and leave the Democratic coalition in tatters, the opportunity to bring in new young, minority and independent voters gone for a few more decades.

"Clinton" will be a dirty word in Democratic circles if her tactics help McCain win the White House. And that's exactly what her winking at bigots for the primaries now will do. Let's hope the supers, who are her only chance at the nomination, bear that in mind: A vote for Hilary now is as good as a vote for McCain later. It is suicidal to vote for a cadidate who is willing to throw the black vote under the bus.

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

Obama, congratulations on winning Mississippi. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwhomas.loc.gov). Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
(10) Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(11) Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(12) Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
(13) Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
(14) Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
(15) Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record. Read the facts and not emotion.
Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

Hey Dominic

Has anyone looked at the fact that the popular vote can't really be tabulated. Caucuses would have to be multiplied by an x factor to even out the states. and since no one knows what that x factor would be...

How can someone say they won the popular vote?

Delegate update: the Spitzer effect

Does it concern anyone that 24% of votes for Hillary came from republicans?? "Conservative" talk show host Rush Limbaugh is calling for republican voters to go out and vote for Hillary so that she can "bloody up Obama"I am not a hater either way,I could and will support whomever gets the nomination.
