Woman Voter in PA wrote yesterday: “I am PROUN[sic}D TO SAY I AM ONE OF THESE WOMAN IN PA. I just came from her HQ in Johnstown PA and I can say that it is an AWESOME sight to see so many Woman supporting Sen. Clinton !!! I am very very proud to be an American as she is the best solution for ALL Americans.”

This is a serious question that I’m hoping the blogger who posted this can answer. I am legitimately curious about this and hope you can shed some light. I don’t begrudge you for being in favor of one candidate or another but am just wondering what you say to young women and young men (not sure if you have kids) about the following:

1) Senator Clinton’s actions in Michigan and Florida in which she pledged one thing and then later says something completely different. How do we justify to our kids that “you should just throw a big enough temper-tantrum and you’ll get your way.”
2) Senator Clinton’s persistent “stretching the truth” or “clumsy” language as First Read put it about her experience both on domestic and foreign relations issues. When we teach our kids, we call it LYING. How is this a good role model for our children? “Stretch the truth until you can no longer get away with it and then say that you “misspoke.”

These accounts too have been debunked as wild exaggerations or terribly misleading, but the TV press gave her a free pass. Isn't it time you guys looked at this pattern, especially considering that "experience" is the foundation of her campaign and she says the reason that she matches up well against McCain is that she passes "the commander-in-chief" test?

I heard your commentaries on The Tipping Point last night Chuck. And I have one question for you, WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG? Not only did I reach my tipping point as February winded down (in the days prior to Ohio and Texas) but I regularly wrote about it in First Read comments :). This is old news to me but its good to know some people are finally getting it.

Carville's pretty bitter, huh? I used to be a fan. He is mistaken that loyalty trumps everything else. Perhaps he has made his money off politics too long...

I have my own line in the sand...I do not support the Clinton's tactics. I believe they are ruining the Dem. party. I will never vote for either of them again. Obama had to defend himself and its gotten nasty. Who didn't see this coming?

If Obama is not the nominee, most likely I will not vote for either Clinton and McCain (and this has never happened to me before, I have never not voted for President). I still believe I can go to the polls and vote down ballot for Dems. I may reregister as an Independent (we'll see how this plays out).

I must say, there is serious doubt in recent days regarding the elect ability factor for Sen. Obama. The words and associations present by the candidates is disturbing, to say the very least.

I have spoken to many persons in my county as I am an active member of the Dem. party here in PA and I will say, I have spoken to persons who were previously leaning toward Obama and with absolute certainty - MANY are saying there is MORE explanation required as to Sen. Obamas 'Chosen' associations with his Pastor, Tony Resko and now - as someone pointed out in last nights meeting a person known as William Ayers (???).

IF he is chosen as our parties nominee, the words I am hearing from persons on the street indicate that either they will not vote or they will vote for McCain as most in my county (PA) cannot bring themselves to vote for Sen. Obama who to many here, seem extreme.

Just wanted to share something I read last night about North Carolina.

It has gone for the GOP since 1980. Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to carry it in 1976. Even John Edwards on the ticket in 2004 could not bring it over to the Democratic side.

The African American population is 21% in NC. In South Carolina it is 29%. In Georgia it is also 29%. And in Mississippi it is 39%.

So why is NC suddenly so important in everyone's eyes? Seems like it is demographically pretty even as far as who it would "favor." It is not a liberal state, does not have as large an African-American population as other Southern states, and is quite rural except for the three cities of Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte.

THANK YOU for saying this. I was struck by the irony of Clinton's comparing being President to being the mother of a family at the Women's Summit in Pennsylvania, and then seeing Chelsea next to her in the file footage from Bosnia when she'd indicated there was sniper fire. Even if, as she's tried to say since, there was only the threat of sniper fire, why did she let her daughter step off the plane? Is the best way to protect yourself from sniper fire to hug an 8-year old girl to your chest?

I have to say, too, I'm dismayed at their sending Bill to campaign in Kentucky and their setting up the beginnings of an apparatus in Montana. I am so sick of this already. The thought that it will continue until June just makes me ill. Good or bad, I just do not want to hear the name "Clinton" anymore.

Of course this prolonged primary is damaging the party. With the fight going on, even with many now admitting that it's pretty much apparent that Clinton cannot win the nomination without completely destroying it, no one has the spine in the party to take control of things and provide some direction.
The hands off of the leaders is frustrating because i read the supers are waiting for some sign and lead from the leaders.

Could we please stop the ridiculous assertion that Obama lied when he said he did not hear the statements by his pastor that were currently being blasted 24/7 on FOX News, but then admitted in his speech that he was present to hear some things that may be considered controversial? It's been proven that the sermons being broadcast were given on days when Obama was not present, or even in the state of Illinois. By admitting he'd heard statements that could be considered controversial, he was simply indicating that to some, anything can be controversial. This was not an example of his being caught in a lie, or even fudging the truth, and it's certainly not on par with repeatedly claiming to be under fire in a foreign country until video evidence proves the lie.

Senator Clinton has based her ENTIRE claim on the Presidency on the fact that she's the most experienced. It's like the Bush Administration with their constant drumbeat of "Saddam and Al Qaeda are linked." Eventually, people start believing it. I think there is interest in NC for a couple of reasons: 1) Charlotte area has many young people as well as many transplants from the Northeast which appeal to Democrats, 2) Raleigh has many young people from the university area as well as a high number of blacks 3) Many of the military, Fort Bragg & Camp Lejeune are not as gung ho about staying in Iraq as they were 4 years ago and McCain means more of the same. I for one was a life long Republican that switched to Independent so that I can vote in the Democratic primary. I know of at least thirty other Northeners that have done the same because we like Obama and we saw first hand in New York what Hillary the carpetbagger is all about, HERSELF.

The sad thing about The Tipping Point kind of issue is that IF Barack Obama becomes "unelectable" it will be because of all these attacks from Clinton and because the Democratic party did not unify around him early enough. Were the party to unify around him now, they could win in Nov. If this goes on for three or more more months than neither is electable. This was the scorched earth policy unleashed by the Clintons a month (or so) ago. Many of us saw it coming. Nobody took care to stop it. We get what we get. This was not inevitable, this was purposeful.

Obama can survive the only horrid blow that he has had so far (the Wright loop played out of context over and over). He showed himself to have tremendous leadership potential. But can he win with the Clinton's leading the charge against him in the general? Hmmm, how high are her negatives?

This is what we do in America. We seek to tear down those among us who would rise us up.

Sad here in central CT...but willing to believe it can and will be different.

Poll this morning has said over 50 % unhappy with Obama . I believe it was Rasmussin . I talked to Dnc this morning and Fl. and Mi wont be seated .They can vote in Jan. Obama had to drag his feet and run clock down so now it is pretty well sealed . I believe our only hope is Hillary. She maybe could help with these two states in Nov. They will not vote for Obama. With an over 50% disfavor rateing and the ire of these 2 states He will not have a chance.Exit polls go up each time as to Obamas ability to not get Hillarys voters. Iowan: The 'magic number' of 2025 is calculated without FL and MI. If those two states were to be counted, the delegate count would increase. Chuck probably knows the number.
As for Sen Clinton's electoral college remarks, those were made in the context of what happened to Al Gore in 2000. Note, however, that the electoral college is still around and is likely never to go away and that a winning candidate must reach 270 electoral college votes. Many Obama supporters, particularly those younger voters who have not followed politics probably honestly believe that he has a chance of picking up red states; many would say that that is doubtful. Look again at the electoral map for 2000 or 2004 and place upon it an overlay of the current results in the Dem primaries. What red states will Obama be able to win? And what if he truly can't win Ohio or Florida?
Of course, if media outlets such as First Read continue to portray every Clinton statement as beneath contempt and every Obama statement (no matter how false) as excusable.
I remember during the debate on campaign finance reform, the Republican line was that if the bans on soft money went through, the mainstream media would be choosing our next President. Hats off to Mitch McConnell ... he was right.

Regarding the Wright moment, Obama just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Republicans, Hillary and media are trying to make something out of nothing.

It's his ‘I didn’t inhale’ Clinton moment: Obama really didn’t know that Rev. Wright was saying those Anti-American things in his sermons, and yes even after attending the same Trinity church for 20 years.

Give the guy a break (and a well deserved vacation).

WOW. Bills now got only 3 Pinocchios to Hillarys 5. Never thought I would see that happen. I can't help believe that both their mothers would be very disappointed in their actions and lying on the campaign trail.
It appears Politics is a nasty BUSINESS. Currently one of the largest businesses in America. The only upside to it is that the Clintons will drag the whole democratic party down with it in 2008.

This a.m. some pundits were trying to dismiss the idea that "revenge" voting might occur. Obama supporters that wouldn't vote for Clinton and vice versa. One guest, however, said he believed the chance of revenge voting was very real. I believe he is correct. However, he said it would be women who wouldn't vote for Obama because the woman candidate was eliminated. WRONG. I will NOT vote for Obama because he lacks character, judgement and is dishonest.

The risk of reviewing history is that we often draw incorrect lessons from it. Regan V Ford paved the way for Regan. Mondale V Hart led the way for Dukkacus, which led the way for Clinton. These protracted fights are indicative of deep divisions within a party that are resolved after the fact. More importantly when these battles are papered over for the pretense of party unity they don’t disappear they intensify.

Both the Clinton and Obama camps are engaging in make believe. The Obama camp wants you to believe that shutting the process down will speed the healing ignoring that Democratic voters in the remaining states are now fully engaged in the process and will not at all feel that they have been marginalized. The Clinton camp wants you to believe that they are not playing for a draw. In truth we have two deeply flawed candidates working through a deeply flawed process directed by a profoundly flawed chairman. So as a rank and file democrat what is the down side of seeing the whole dysfunctional mess flayed out for all to see? It would be worth it if we could emerge as a party run by competent adults.
