Does anyone besides me try to imagine what the country will be like when their favorite candidate has a few months under their belt as our new President?

I don't find it odd at all that Senator Obama will not be in Memphis today. In light of all that has gone on in this campaign in the past weeks, I think that Senator Obama is allowing the spotlight to shine exactly where it belongs - on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy, instead of the media trying to link it to current political issues.

Martin Luther King's legacy lives all across America, so wherever Senator Obama chooses to pay his respects is appropriate.

Sorry, but your comment on the poll of 50-38 now 46-43 is incorrect. It was Obama 50% over McCain 38%, not HRC. The quote from the NYT is:

"The poll showed that Mr. Obama now leads Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, 47 percent to 42 percent; his lead was 50 percent to 38 percent in late February, when Mr. McCain still faced primary opposition from Mike Huckabee."

I know you guys really, really, really want this to go on for as long as possible. However, you should try your best not to change the information to suit your needs.

Aren't you splitting hairs over a Pastor v a "Spiritual Advisor"? Exactly what would the difference be? If he has influence over Senator Clinton's religious life and how she views society, it is exactly the same thing.

But the problem with the Clintons go farther than that. It is the same thing that got them in trouble in the White House the first time. No matter how what they do impacts the tax payer, it is all a secret. That led to the Health Care debacle that Senator Clinton was in charge of, as well as the endless investigations and the Impeachment. Why would ANYONE vote for more of that?

In reading about Martin Luther King Jr. this morning, it struck me that he was only 39 years old at the time of his death. I went back last weekend and watched tapes I have of him being interviewed on the old Mike Douglas & Merv Griffin programs. I firmly believe that his voice would have continued to inspire people for many many years.

Unfortunately, the Civil Rights Movement died when he died. LBJ comes to mind today as well as MLK and RFK.

Sad day. Especially when I hear the racist talk all over the air waves these days from the mouths of people who haven't a clue about anything, except how to scream and how to hate. It's never about trying to understand or even bothering to take the time to become educated. Never.

Re. the popular vote, not only would the campaigns have changed strategies (here we go, another rule change in the middle of the game), but you also have to factor in the caucus states (the states not reporting the popular vote factor).

There is a reason that you don't change rules in the middle of the game...not only does it tend to favor one candidate over another (why else then would someone be requesting a rules change) but essentially our system is not set up to handle that as the measure.

Fair is fair. Not fair is a big old problem.

Am I the only one who thinks it's irresponsible for MSNBC to be covering the King assassination all day long, in light of the current political climate? Yesterday, this blog approved two examples of hate speech: one comparing Obama to the anti-Christ, and one comparing him to Hitler. With violent mental illness on the rise, the media should not go overboard in covering these types of crimes. King is already a hero, and there are plenty of other opportunities to honor him without focusing on the assassination.

Good Morning America had an excellent story about all the shady deals Bill Clinton got himself into over the last few years, so the tax records will be investigated further. This is why they have been putting them off, so they can see if anything on there will embarrrass Hillary, which of course it will.

If anything, people will be turned off by the way The Clinton's made their wealth; shady deals with shady people.

This thing with the Clinton taxes is being made a story by the Clintons. I know they're rich. Everyone knows they're rich. And I really do doubt there's much in their tax returns that couldn't be explained away.

So why make a non-story into a story? Seems just dumb, but that's exactly what they've done by waiting months to release tax returns for 2006 and earlier.

And while its no secret they're rich, they probably don't want that to dominate the news cycle for 24 hours or so. But by making this non-story a story, of course reporters will be talking about how much they have, telling us how much or little they've given to charities, pointing to securities from companies not quite as socially responsible as Ben and Jerry's. Just dumb.

President Obama is giving a speech on Martin Luther King as well as the death of the Kennedys in Indiana and North Dakota today. John and Hillary are in Memphis because they are playing politics, they could care less about the March. Their ppearance is more about getting the black vote. So Please Chuck Todd and the rest of the so called pundits, stop making something out of nothing. His not being there will not hurt him at all. His campagne is about UNITY. We had three great individuals murdered MARTIN, JOHN AND ROBERT.

As a white professional woman of a 'certain age', I take offense with Hillary's exploitation of "the boys". I've always worked in a male dominated field. I've found there are two types of women in such organizations - those who work hard and prove themselves worthy, and those who blame the men for "keeping them down". Yes, there are groups of men who don't understand that female peers are just peers, not competition. But I've also observed that the kind of women who blame "the boys", don't do anything to reach out to "the boys" anymore than those misguided males reach out to them. When I first started working 20 years ago, I was told that wearing skirts would look too female and I wouldn't be taken seriously. I didn't fall for it. I'm a girly-girl and that's just that - besides, I thought, regardless of what I'm wearing, they're going to figure out I'm not a boy.

What gets women ahead in a man's world? Porfessional competence, collaboration, respecting everyone. While Hillary Clinton could be the first woman president, she's one of the women who think that acting (and dressing) like a man is what it takes. She's missing the point. Women tend to offer different ways of looking at things and different ways of approaching problems. If Hillary Clinton's our next president, she may sit to go to the bathroom, but she's just another one of "the boys".

I agree with nashville_fan; the spotlight should be on MLK and not Obama, and of course Obama will acknowledge the date, and pragmatically he needs to campaign in Indiana and should not sacrifice a day for a pro forma appearance in Memphis. In fact, philosophically, just like MLK he needs to be addressing people that DON'T already agree with him!

You don't change people's minds about race by always doing what is expected of you because of your race. I think the same thing about his bowling in Altoona. He should NOT stick to sports he excels at; people give him credit for the effort. It is humanizing. I bowl a decent game, and I find his 7-frame 37 (with a strike!) endearing, and not bad for a first-timer. Gutter balls and strikes and barely missed spares are what make it fun; these inconsequential near misses and hair-breadth successes and smash hits are all opportunities for humor and friendship. C'mon, inconsequential failure is just plain funny.

I think by definition of "sane", any sane person will agree that how badly a non-bowler bowls is completely irrelevant to whether a person has the judgement to lead the country out of the horrific mess it is in, and although it is probably impossible to measure, I'd bet the Altoona bowling experience is a net positive for Obama.

And the same thing for appearing in Fort Wayne today.

You know, it's not so much the candidates, but the candidates supporters that are putting race and gender into this election. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that what Hillary Clinton meant when she told Bill Richardson that "He (Obama) can't win" was code for "he's black, he's not going to win".

Everyone needs to stop focusing on the witch hunt of Hillary Clinton (and yes, that is all it is...I don't see the media going after Obama in this fashion, or Mccain for that matter)and get back to who would be the best to defeat Mccain in the fall and get this country back on track. The polls are all over the place, every single last one of them, and they have not been at all reliable during this election season. Whether its because of who's being chosen, how they're being chosen, the questions used and the way they're asked, bottom line is the ONLY thing the polls agree on is this is the most hard-fought, unpredictable primary we have ever seen. There is NO clear winner here, and that's what has the American people up set; they're used to having clear choices. Look at the super-delegates; I mean, they're ready to jump ship or stay depending on the PA Primary.

One more thing; I don't know of one person who says that they didn't have it good during the 90's when Clinton was in power. What is driving me up the wall are people that say,"Hillary can't do all that." Well, they said the same thing about Bill Clinton; he couldn't balance the budget, he couldn't get us a surplus, he couldn't lower unemployment, he couldn't get the palestinians and israeli's to at least sit down and talk to each other. To my best recollection, he did all that and more.

Everyone needs to do one thing: Chill Out!

And to put Dr. King's death commemoration in context (specifically the question about who will be in Memphis and who won't), let me ask this:

How many of the candidates were in Dealey Square last November? Or planning to go to LA later this spring to commemorate RFK (also a 40th anniversary)?

But by not making these pilgrimages, are any of them (particularly the Democrats) somehow less of a Democrat, or in some way showing disrespect toward the Kennedys?

I'd say 'no.' And I suspect Dr. King would prefer people remember his words rather than the city in which he was gunned down. Just my two-cents.

Senator Obama was on the Tom Joyner Morning Show today and will be in Indiana to commerate the passing of Dr. King. Had you listened, he stated that the message that Dr. King spoke of has to be spread across the US, not just Memphis. Robert Kennedy was campaigning in Indiana when Dr. King was killed and spoke/announced Dr. Kings passing. I don't know if it will be in the same location, but Sen. Obama understands he is running for President of the US and doesn't need to pretend he only cares about one group when it comes across as fake. He will also go to North Dakota today and spread his message as well as Dr. King's. What is it that Hillary and McCain can say that seems like it is just for show. Do either really care?

The goal from the outset was to acquire the most Pledged Delegates - not the most Popular Vote. The strategies of both campaigns should have been based on that Pledged Delegate goal. The Obama camp has obviously played by the rules known by everyone and worked in each state to acquire the most Pledged Delegates. The Clinton camp did not have any long-term strategy as they were so smug and over-confident that they thought this was going to be a "coronation" - not a competition. They thought it would all be over by Super Tuesday, February 5. That is why they are scrambling now in an almost laughable way trying to rewrite the nominating rules. One day the "talking point" is "Popular Vote" - another day it is "Electoral Vote" - and yet another day it is "there is no such thing as a Pledged Delegate!" Oh, and they changed their tune from last fall about the results in the "Beauty Contests" in Fl and MI counting only after she started losing. Just remeber - the Superdelegates have been going to Obama since February 5 - almost two months. Hillary has lost delegates - not gained. Why anyone would think they are suddenly going to go with Hillary - especially after the Bosnia story - is beyond me. Unless she wins really BIG in all of the remaining contests - not by just 10 points - but by 15 points or 20 to 30 points, which is what Obama did in state after state like Wisconsin, VA, and MD - then the Superdelegates will not overturn the winner of the most Pledged Delegates - Obama.

I too, a white, almost 52-year-old, female (Hillary demographic) would never ever EVER vote for a Clinton ever again on any ballot anywhere! In '92 I did vote for Bill, but in '96 left the President check-box blank. Could see the corruption early on, which continues today--apologies schmapologies! I will gladly join the "Black Out" that Sharpton suggests if her name appears anywhere on this coming November's ballot.

I am going to write to my nephew who is a marine currently in Iraq and let him know about HRC's joke about sniper fire. So, what he is doing over there is a joke according to HRC? Oh, I forgot, she voted for the war. She has stooped to an all time low.

The irony. She is part of the Fellowship which honors Hitler and other dictators, but she criticizes Obama for his relationship with Wright.

Walking In Memphis is a great song. I'm familiar with Lonestar's version, although I know it's not the original.

Whether it's revelent or not, Memphis is famous for Graceland first, then Sun Records and anything else connected with Elvis.

If you ask any white or black man 40 years old and under where Martin Luther King was killed, I seriously doubt many would answer "Memphis," and that's unfortunate.

Doesn't surprise me at all that Sen Obama is skipping the festivities. He skipped the State of the Black Union meeting, and the invitation to a Mississippi state democratic event honoring a prominent African American from that state (although Sen Clinton attended). He is skipping because he knows he doesn't have to make an effort to get the African American vote, they will vote for him simply because he is black. Talk about arrogance.

For Deb in Texas: Thank you for saying so eloquently what a lot of women feel(myself included). You are absolutely right. I have worked in a male dominated field for years, and I could not have expressed my thoughts about this issue myself.

I too am offended by Hillary constantly blaming the "boys". And I think I can safely say that a lot of other women too. This type of attitude is exactly the attitude that promotes misunderstandings between genders. It's demeaning to both, not to mention insulting.

I think it's sad that after Hillary's 35 years of "experience", she apparently hasn't learned much at all.

I find it very interesting that Clinton keeps saying she has been vetted and there arent any skeletons in her closet and yet we keep finding out more and more hidden things about her and the staff that surrounds her(Penn and Maggie Williams). It's an antithesis of what she says and what she does, same old, same old. I also found it disgusting that she could make a joke about the lie she told the American people on Bosnia.
Maybe the tax returns, if published, will show the same inconsistencies the White House papers did. And what about the Clinton Library list....who in foreign governemnts will any Clinton administration be beholding to as they have been donating thinking they will have a favorable status if Clinton is elected? Bill promised not to release names....what else has he promised? I'm sure Bill has made promises thinking Hillary was a shoo-in.

Why is it odd that Senator Obama will not be in Memphis? The King family isn't in Memphis! Senator Obama chose to remain in IN and give a speech from the same location that RFK gave his speech that is credited with keeping Indiana from going up in flames.
