Hillary Rodham Clinton wants voters to decide the nomination based on who can coolly and competently run the country. She had better hope they don’t study her recent campaign too closely for the answer.

Clinton has overseen two major staff shake-ups in two months. She has left a trail of unpaid bills and unhappy vendors and had to loan her own campaign $5 million to keep it afloat in January. Her campaign badly underestimated her main adversary, Barack Obama, miscalculated the importance of organizing caucus states and was caught flat-footed after failing to lock up the nomination on Super Tuesday.

It would be easy to dismiss all of this as fairly conventional political stumbling — if she hadn’t made her supreme readiness and managerial competence the central issue of her presidential campaign.

But since she has, a growing number of Democrats are comparing the Clinton and Obama campaigns — their first real exercise in executive leadership — and rendering harsh assessments of her stewardship.

In twin columns in Tuesday’s Washington Post, left-of-center columnists Peter Beinart and E.J. Dionne Jr. condemned Clinton’s overall management of the campaign and inability to build a durable message and infrastructure. It’s a common theme in Democratic circles these days.

“Any time you are involved in a long campaign, there are going to be major substantive and procedural gaffes,” says former Democratic Rep. David Bonior, an uncommitted superdelegate who served as the campaign manager to John Edwards. “The question is how a campaign handles those gaffes and how a candidate handles them. And I think it’s fair to say that Sen. Obama has handled [his] problems better than Sen. Clinton.”

Obama can rightly claim he has run a more consistent, disciplined and technologically savvy campaign. While Clinton has blown though nearly a half-dozen campaign slogans and failed to put concerns about her credibility to rest, he has clung to essentially the same leadership and governing message he outlined in his 2004 speech at the Democratic convention. There has been little drama inside his operation — or at least if there was, it has been kept largely concealed.

“In every campaign, the strategy is important and the day-to-day management is important. And in Obama’s case, it’s hard not to argue that they have run a great campaign,” said Steve Elmendorf, deputy campaign manager for Kerry’s 2004 bid and a Clinton supporter. “It’s been one of the best-run presidential campaigns in the last 20 years. I think they are focused and disciplined and on message. … The test of a good campaign is having a plan and keeping an operation on track to execute a plan.”

Put simply, Obama has shown he can offer a compelling vision, execute a complicated strategy to convey it and, all the while, keep the ledger in the black. That’s not a bad first step to becoming a strong leader...'

It's impossible for her to distance herself ideological when she has financially benefitted from these deals. She and Bill are joined at the pocketbook (see: Tax Returns). It's nice to know that the blood money from union-busting Columbians has her neck-deep in pantsuits.

It's one thing to disagree about intangibles, like religion. It's quite another to disagree about tangible realities, like your bank account increasing millions of dollars because of what your spouse does that you SAY you dislike.

Following the Hillary logic-rabbithole, actions are more important than words. In this case, her actions are that of a woman who has financially benefitted from these deals.

I don't see her filing for divorce or refusing Bill's dirty money.

So this is an insult to peoples' intelligence. Really.

And tell the families of the four hundred dead Columbians who tried to organize but failed under Uribe, with a little help from his friends, that Hillary Clinton isn't part of this because she SAYS she opposes it. Yeah, that won't fly.

The article mentioned what Clinton did for Kazachstan, but didn't get into the greater part of the deal: As the head of the Clinton Global Initiative, Clinton flew with a financier from Canada to Kazachstan, where the dictator was starting to lose power due to a poor economy.

Clinton brokered a deal between the dictator and the financier whereby the financier bought rights to uranium to be mined in kazachstan. The dictator's power base was bolstered and the financier is now dealing in uranium. For his troubles, the Global Initiative recieved millions of dollars from the financier.

Movement toward Democracy crushed in its infancy, trouble stirred up between Kazachstan and Russia, dangerous Uranium on the market, and Bill Clinton's foundation makes boat loads of money.

I think that the Clinton justification for stuff like this is that by putting the dirty money toward good works, the negative effects are somehow nullified. This is not true.

It's not about "disagreements" between the Clintons, it's about them taking advantage of the huge ower vacuums left by our Government abdicating responsibility in the world: effectively setting up their own trade agreements.

CHILDREN KNOW THE TRUTH!

I see that when children (ages 8-9) who have a knack for looking into people's eyes and seeing their soul are asked if they would vote for Hillary, Obama or McCain of the 14 children randomly asked 8 stated they would pick McCain, 6 stated Obama, and 0 stated Hillary.

When asked why they voted the way they did the children stated that they felt sorry for McCain because of his white hair and he seemed old. That they thought Obama felt happy and that made them feel good, and that Hillary seemed mad like she wanted to blame someone for something all the time even when she tried to smile. Some children even noted a degree of fear when watching Hillary.

Forget all the arguements about policies and programs. Many voters who see the same thing as do the kids (but would never admit it) will vote based on these feelings. And once Hillary is out and McCain has the opportunity to lose that famous temper of his now and again during the general election the fear that we children felt for Hillary will also be felt more so for McCain so that Obama will gain votes thereby taking the lead at the time of the general election.

First, sentences (and I'm being generous here), start with a capital letter.

Second, your candidates name is Hillary, not hillery.

Third, if you are going to make a conclusion, such as "vote for him [Obama} and let him destroy this country," support it with some sort of evidence in the form of an argument.

Fourth, Hillary certainly has independent thoughts and may well differ in her goals and opinions than former President Bill Clinton does, but you missed the point. The operative words in this argument are "former President." As such, despite any differences in opinion, Bill Clinton will have a huge influence over the decisions made in a Hillary Clinton Administration. With opposing forces at work in every policy decision, not much will be accomplished and the people will have no idea where their leader actually stands.

I don't necessarily feel that it is right to criticize Hillary for Bill's stand on many of the issues, EXCEPT for those people who are supporting Hillary in hopes of a dual presidency and a return to the 1990s. It's those individuals who will need to carefully consider both of the Clintons' stands on the various issues.

Though Hillary is not my candidate of choice, I have no doubt that she would stand her ground and her policies would reflect her beliefs and not Bill's. On the other hand, I'm concerned that what she says her policies would be while running for President, could be different than the path she would take as President.

When will the Clintons just "go away", stay home, and count all the money hey swindle through crooked deals and speeches that relate to Bill's successful and interesting past? It seems to me that we have had enough... just think of the qualities that Hillary has demonstrated during these primaries. The Hillary "CLINTON" qualities or virtues:
"C"orruption (never proven, but always suspected)
"L"ying (undisputable)
"I"nconsistency (a matter of fact)
"N"egativity (we all see it)
"T"enacity (A good virtue, if channelled right?)
"O"verstatements (her alibi for outright lies)
"N"astiness (in this context she is world class)

Obama offers Inspiration and Hope and Change and so many things that this country desparately needs to "turn the page". While his opponents question his experience and jump on some flaw in his history or campaign, he is the only candidate that has maintained consistency and has done a terrfic job managing his campaign. His inexeperience is overstated, but where he has made judgements they have been "spot on". The mark of a great leader is to surround him/her self with knowledgeable, capable, loyal people who are inspied by their leader. Think about it and so the comparison....

justwannaknow - Michelle Obama didn't get rich off of any positions that she might have disagreed with her husband about. Hillary did quite well with an income of over $1,000,000, partially due to her husband's "differing points of view." To everyone who's complaining that they're focusing on what Bill has done or said. Lets remember that all or at least most of you are happy to have the former president back in the White House. As many have mentioned before, if Hillary is elected President, it'll be considered a "co-presidency" with Bill Clinton.

Now that all of this stuff is coming out, most Hillary supporters are trying to distance her from her husband. Finally, there is a conflict of interest or at least it looks like on the surface when your husband is collecting millions of dollars and advocating for something while his wife is just "saying" that she opposes free trade. Are they "just words?"

I can not believe that so many people are falling for this. No body notices that only policy differences that put Hillary in a good light are being released to the press? They are setting it up so that she can answer the whole NAFTA thing in the debates to where she can say,"My husband I disagreed on a lot of things...like NAFTA." I'm not an expert, but isn't this obvious to all you professinals? Show me a major policy difference or two where it puts Hillary in a not-so-good light and I MIGHT start believing in her true beliefs as well as his.

There is a HUGE difference between the newsworthiness of what Michelle and Barack Obama agree or disagree on, and what Hillary and Bill Clinton agree or disagree on. The difference is, that Hillary's spouse is a former president of the US, who will no doubt carry a great amount of influence in a Clinton administration. In fact, many people actually refer to the Democratic race as between Obama and "The Clintons" rather than Obama vs. "Hillary" Clinton.

I'm sure that Gov. Schwarzenneger of California, and his wife, Maria Shriver of the Kennedy clan don't see eye-to-eye on many issues. However, since she has never held elective office, let alone governor, these differences are no more newsworthy than any supposed differences between Barack and Michelle (or between me and my wife for that matter).

I'm so frustrated with Hillary, and her supporters, claiming media bias against her. It's like a crook blaiming the cops when they get caught. The media bends over backwards for her! She gets a superdelegate, it's all over the news and headlined on news sites. Obama can get three and barely a mention here and there. For a week, one or two news blogs have talked about Bill Clinton's extensive work in favor of the Columbia trade deal. Yet, I never heard that mentioned on MSNBC news shows. I was even beginning to wonder if it was real until one site showed past news articles from 2007 from his trip to latin America. Many news 'analysts' proclaimed that Penn was fired for his Columbian Trade work. But you have to listen to the exact words from a Clinton. He actually was demoted, not as soothing to Hillary supporters, and not as publicized in the press. It was the same thing with Shaheen from New York, her co-chair, when he tried to drum up lies about Obama and the Clintons proclaimed loudly and often that he had "stepped down". When the news person would say, he was fired or resigned, the Clintons would nod and say he did step down voluntarily. He stayed on the campaign through the New York and other northeast primaries in a different title! We've had eight years of an administration that repeatedly lies to the country. Do we really need another administration just like Bush's? If you fact check the Clinton's claims against Obama, you find unbiased sites correcting those claims. While you're at it fact check her claims on all the wonderful things she's done and you'll find that the truth is far different from the spin! Fact check Obama and you often find out that he doesn't tell about all his accomplishments. Look up Obama endorsement sometime. I did trying to find out one person's name and was stunned at the diverse list of endorsements, many from the Clinton white house era, who have endorsed Obama! I'm for the candidate that wants to restore the constitution and transparency in government, and is honest to a fault! That's what we need after Bush/Clinton/Bush regimes!

Egregious as Mark Penn’s conflict of interest was in lobbying for the passage of a Colombia-U.S. free-trade agreement which Senator Clinton opposes --- while managing her presidential campaign --- it pales next to what Bill Clinton did to secure a Kazakhstan uranium mining contract for his benefactor, Canadian mining financier Frank Giusta.

As the New York Times has amply documented [http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31donor.html?_r=1&emc=eta1&oref=slogin], on September 6, 2005, Mr. Giusta flew Mr. Clinton to Almaty, Kazakhstan, for a private banquet with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan A. Nazarbayev, a strongman known for corruption, electoral fraud and intimidation, the silencing of political dissent and his government’s control of the news media. At the banquet, Mr. Clinton enthusiastically supported President Nazarbayev’s bid to head the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an organization that monitors elections and supports democracy. Following the banquet, and notwithstanding Mr. Giustra’s sheer inexperience with mining in Kazakhstan , the state-owned uranium agency Kazatomprom awarded him an exclusive contract. Mr. Giustra, in turn, made a $31.3 million donation to the William J. Clinton Foundation, and pledged another $100 million. He subsequently produced a 60th birthday party for Mr. Clinton which raised another $21 million for the Clinton Foundation.

Like Mark Penn’s dealings on behalf of the Colombians, Mr. Clinton’s dealings on behalf of Mr. Giustra undercut --- for his own personal gain --- Senator Clinton’s position on the propriety of Kazakhstan ’s bid to head the OSCE, which she had previously argued, quite emphatically in a letter to the State Department, was unacceptable, given Kazakhstan ’s poor human rights record. But even more importantly, Mr. Clinton’s “private diplomacy” undermined American foreign policy, which flatly opposed Kazakhstan ’s bid to chair the OSCE.

Isn’t it likewise time for Mr. Clinton to resign from Senator Clinton’s campaign? This isn’t merely an academic inquiry. Kazatomprom’s chief has since met with Mr. Clinton and Mr. Giustra at Mr. Clinton’s Chappaqua home --- although both men initially denied it --- to discuss Kazakhstan ’s intention to buy a 10 percent stake in Westinghouse, a U.S. supplier of nuclear technology. And Mr. Clinton also advised Dubai , under a $40 million contract, how to handle the political firestorm that ensued when a Dubai company sought to take over several American ports. Senator Clinton, like many others on the Hill, raised the national security concerns that killed the deal. Moreover, the Clintons ’ tax returns reveal that they made $15 million from Yucaipa, which manages the financial portfolio of Dubai ’s ruler, Emir Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum --- known for his aggressive boycotts of Israel and citations by the State Department for human rights violations. How much of the Clintons ’ Yucaipa earnings come from the Emir, and what did they do to earn them?

Mr. Clinton’s history of lucrative post-presidency “private deals and diplomacy” raises serious conflict-of-interest issues, as well as questions about their quids pro quo. That’s why it’s imperative, at the very least, that the Clintons disclose the names of all donors and amounts contributed to the William J. Clinton Foundation and Presidential Library, so that we can get a sense --- now --- of what favors a Hillary Clinton Administration might owe them, and how their contributions might shape American domestic and foreign policy, regardless of Candidate Clinton’s current positions while on the campaign trail.
