OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it’s fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre…they’re misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to white working-class don’t wanna work — don’t wanna vote for the black guy. That’s…there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it’s sort of a race thing.

Here’s how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn’t buy it. And when it’s delivered by — it’s true that when it’s delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.

But — so the questions you’re most likely to get about me, ‘Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?’ What they wanna hear is so we’ll give you talking points about what we’re proposing — to close tax loopholes, uh you know uh roll back the tax cuts for the top 1%, Obama’s gonna give tax breaks to uh middle-class folks and we’re gonna provide healthcare for every American.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you’ll find is, is that people of every background — there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you’ll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I’d be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you’re doing what you’re doing.

Barack Obama offers the best future for America. He will bring to the White House a fresh perspective and he has already demonstrated shrewd business sense in the successful running of his campaign. Irrespective of 'bundlers' or 'bundles' one cannot fault him for inherent in these 'bundles' comprise small contributors making up the total contribution. Therefore to say he takes from billionaires and lobbyist is not quite true. If a group of individuals within an organization decides to contribute to a cause as a group you should not attach their contributions to the company they work for. This would be an unfair assessment of the matter.

I have also read some damning comments pertaining to Obama and his pastor and you all need to stop this. Many pastors and priests have not only said but have DONE immoral and illegal acts and quite rightly we do not attach their stigmas on their congregation so why condemn Obama for pastor Wright? Unfair!!!!

I have also seen unfavorable comments about his wife Michelle questioning her patriotism. I can only attribute this to ignorance, insensitivity and a lack of knowledge about PAST AND CONTINUED discrimination of blacks. It certainly is not only historical; it is quite current, just a bit more subtle. We may not be aware of her pain but it could be her experience and we should respect that. If you have a child that continuously disappoints and then shows positive signs that you approve of you will then be proud of him/her, but this has nothing to do with the love you have always had for your child. Look at Obama’s resume. It tells the story of the sacrifices he has already made for his country.

The Clintons tout experience but Hillary is yet to convince me of hers, in fact what I have seen of her experience to date is a badly run campaign that has financial challenges. How can this be when they are millionaires? Why not pay staff and provide health care for them out of private funds? I fail to see how the media can give them a free ride on these and other issues and then saddle Obama with his pastor.

Hillary and McCain are desperate and power hungry, waiting to latch on to everything Obama says and taking it out of context.

The world is watching to see if America will again drop the ball by passing up a golden opportunity to uphold democracy, demonstrate fair play and equality. America is a country of prominence and leadership. It is time to practice what is preached.

Clinton seems to be saying that people may fit the first part of the description but in her experiance she thinks that these people are not negative but hungry for a president that provides leadership and a willingness to help them work their way out of what ever hole they may be in.

I am getting really tired of Hillary Clinton and John McCain. It's clear that they have both lost their minds and are throwing any semblance of what respect they once had down the drain.

I am tired of seeing people in this company that are perfectly capable of hard work, providing for themselves and their families, just forgotten about because of overseas outsourcing.

I have never been more ready in my life for something to be resolved as I am for this campaign and this election. I want the stress gone from my life, I want to look forward to Obama trouncing McCain and ushering in a new era of government and prosperity.

Finally, I never had a complete love or hate for McCain. Never had much reason to judge him. But McCain is in no way an answer for our country. He is a bygone era, a relic, a person as out of tune with our country as George W Bush is. While I do at least truly respect that McCain thinks that what he believes is right, he is nothing more than a continuation of a long road to the abyss we have descended to for the past 7 years.

I have not looked forward to many things in my life more than I do saying the words President Obama.

My husband and I are 50 years old, and have lived in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area all of our lives. Barack Obama couldn't have been more accurate with his assessment of our area. The only well paying jobs here are in healthcare and education. And if you're connected, you could get a job with the corrupt local government. Most other jobs are in the low paying service industry.

My husband has commented for years about the overwhelming negative sentiment in our area. We really notice it when we return home from traveling.

I just saw a blurb of what she had to say. And I wholeheartedly disagree. Bitter isn't a bad thing, it makes you want to make changes and see changes made. Which is why I'm firmly entrenched in the Obama campaign.

I just returned to work last week after being unemployed for almost 3 mos due to my former employer having financial problems. Was I bitter, yes. At my employer? No. I'm bitter about the state of the economy in this country, I'm bitter because my voice hasn't been heard or when it is hadn't been listened to. I'm bitter because we're sending billions of dollars overseas to support a war that isn't ours while I was drawing $316/week unemployment. I'm bitter because the economy in this country is spiraling downwards like someone just pulled the plug out of a tub of water. I'm bitter because in 2008 people still have to ask "can a black man win the presidency".

So yes Senator Clinton I am bitter. Does that mean that I'm not doing anything about it. NO and her implication that being bitter renders me helpless and worthless is what is truly offensive.

I wish she'd call me. We could have a great talk about bitterness. I've used mine in a positive way - gotten deeply involved in this campaign for change. How has she used her bitterness? Clawing and scratching and lying - yeah call me.

Anyone that sees this and wants to paint a rosy picture is blind to the facts. By the way, towns more than 1 hour from a Walmart fair much better then those closer... hmmmm, anyone know a presidential candidate that was on Walmart's board for years? Anyone?

Being blind to the facts will not make small town America come back... I recently visited my Hometown of Constantine, MI and must say that it was a sad affair. The GM plant is gone and so are the high paying jobs. Beautiful old homes are in disrepair or split into low income poorly maintained apartments. The town has a drug problem and when stopping at the local gas station a member of the girls soccer team was buying cigarettes.

I am bitter about this... I bet more than a few Pennsylvanians are too.

The reason this is especially decontextualized is because most people who are reading this don't realize that, in speaking to San Franciscans, it is very much a social tension in the outlying areas that are rural, where people do NOT understand each other. I live 40 miles north of San Francisco and there are more people here who wear cowboy hats and work on ranches and tote guns than anywhere I've been in Pennsylvania. So it makes sense that Barack had to address this in San Francisco, because there is a liberal elitism there towards ordinary folks that is really important to start breaking down.

It's much more telling about the relationship of San Francisco to the rest of California than anything.

I'm glad Barack spoke to people in SF who have this view of embittered folk like myself. We ARE bitter, at times, with the disdain and lack of action that our out of touch Government officials have taken. Look at what so-called progressives like boxer, feinstein, and woolsey have done in rallying behind Clinton when two of their districts were won by Barack.

Now, I'm a classic Sonoma County gal -- I AM a progressive but let me tell you, I've got a membership with both the aclu and the nra, AND jobs are HORRIBLE here. The liberal government here has done nothing to cap the 650K average home price or cost of living, yet the average wage is 45K a year. I'm VERY angry with MY local Government. And the Republican Governor? Forget it. He shut down all of our elementary schools AND state parks.

Are we bitter? Yep. Poor? Yep. A lot like the rest of the country? Yep. Angry with San Francisco and its ilk for driving next to us on the highway listening to KPFA and totally ignoring the problems in their midst? Totally. Voting for Barack? In the majority.

Obama is absolutely correct in his evaluation of small town PA. Although I live in New Jersey, I'm originally from Lawrence County, PA ("Pittsburgh in the west"). I still have many relatives in Clarion County, PA ("Alabama in between"; "Long live the NRA and KKK"), and I would describe them that way, too. The pundits don't understand because they didn't grow up there, and the politicians will use the remarks for their own purposes rather than dealing with the reality that small town PA needs jobs!

Here we go again. What Sen. Obama said was correct and not slaming small town workers. Post the entire comments. The media takes anything he saids out of content. Excuses are made when Bill Clinton, as late as yesterday, made a comment regarding Sen. Obama saying " well he can say he did not still a car". I have heard nothing regarding this since early this morning. Sen. Obama hit the nail on the head! He speaks the truth, but other candidates wants him to say what they want and do. Senator Obama is brilliant, confident and is not a push over...If there is a difference in the polls it is because of the media filling the public with partial facts to continue the racism in this country. First, he is not experience enough when there have been presidents with the same experience, if not less. I am beginning to believe these tactics are made because you the media (CNN)and your major audience do not want to see this country led by an intelligent "True American" that happens to be an African American. You want him to stay in place, the place you place him, not now nor ever!!! Shame on you!

My oh my! When Bill Clinton said "this is the biggest fairy tale ever..." the media and Obamanoids jumped all over this and said he was racist. They rarely used the full context which would have shown that he was talking about Iraq. I'm rather enjoying the spin and squirm going on this hour. And of course, Matthews, Olbermann, Roland on CNN have already started saying "what he really meant to say..." Time to head back to Pennsylvania, Senator Obama and have more beers and bowl with bitter folk. Amazing what this guy says behind closed doors to a rich, big donating crowd in CA.
