Sen. Clinton is not the Huckabee of the Democratic nomination process...she has received over 10 million votes from the American people. If you were to give to Clinton even 25% of the total votes Obama has received from the African-American people, Hillary would be ahead in the popular vote and way ahead in pledged delegates.

I work with several clients for IT issues that do business and live in Westmoreland County (about 20 minutes east of Pittsburgh, and very much small-town PA) and southern Allegheny County (also small-town).

Every single one of these people is a small-business owner. Business machines, accounting, barter groups, pool tables, printer, radio - these folks do a wide range of work.

I've worked with them since I moved here in 2002. Every single one of them has seen their business decline as the population shifts out of Pittsburgh and more in to south central and south eastern PA. They've seen business close and the cost of doing business go up (whether it be airtime, gas, wood, slate, fasteners, whatever).

When they talk to me about the economy, they're not happy. They're resilient, but they're not under the impression that things are good - or that anyone gives a damn about making them better.

These folks are angry, they're fed up with our "top-down" government. They're...well...bitter.

There are things with which Hillary Clinton can make hay concerning Barack Obama. She may, however, want to not press this topic too far. Trying to sell herself as a gun-wielding, Bible-thumping Midwestern girl at heart probably won't play well when contrasted with her upper-middle-class hometown, Wellesley and Yale degrees, and her ultra-connected family.

As for John McCain? Well, let's just say that a man whose first three responses to the subprime mortgage crisis could be summed up as, "Dear Homeowners: Drop Dead", is unlikely to be seen as someone with the "common touch" - especially when you consider that he and his wife are worth well upwards of $100 million.

Bitter… Really? Why would we be bitter? Maybe it’s because the bankers who offered predatory loans are now "retiring" with multi-million dollar packages? Maybe it’s because we are struggling to pay our mortgages while the banks get bailed out by DC? Maybe it’s because our jobs have been shipped overseas, some by Bill Clinton. Yes, we are bitter, and there is nothing "elitist" about speaking the truth!

Still can't figure out what was untrue or false about what Barack said. It's just like most American's not to like what we see when we are shown ourselves in a mirror that reflects what truly is before someone is able to cover it up with falsehoods.

It's good to have a candidate tell America exactly what it needs to hear. It appears to me that his rivals are a little 'bitter' that they didn't expound on this issue first.

Ultimately, we all have reasons to be embittered, having seen our government hijacked by those who seem entirely divorced from our aspirations. Small towns are occupied by some of those who deserve to be most frustrated of all. Barack Obama recognizes that our bitterness is not cured by ignoring it or dismissing it. 1. Voters in this ad were hired. Never would have voted obama anyway.

2. Online small town newspaper cites in PA do not mention this bitter argument - this is a scandal all of Hillary's making. Case in point, in Altoona folks were bused in from other states to say they were "outraged" with Obama about the bitter comments - but none of them was actually from Altoona. Lovely.

3. ARG poll you all keep quoting is bunk - they are notorious for their polls being waaaay off.

4. A poll in the Pittsburgh gazette shows 48% of PA-ians think Hillary is out of touch with us, versus 28% who think Obama is, of 8100 voters (so far):

Any person who spends the time actually listening to what Sen. Obama said in his speech will come to realize that Clinton and McCain are using old politics. I also think that this sort of methodology is no longer popular with the public and will result in negative feedback.

This should backfire into HRCs face. Not even the most ardent HRC supporters can with a straight-face equate the term "bitter" with being an elitist? Hillary the populist candidate? Please. Obama's comments were more correct than inflammatory--I'd like to see him incorporate them into a larger commentary than this now infamous sound bite--the reality is there are large pockets of people who have been disaffected by the economic changes of the last two decades and are bitter, frustrated and disillusioned with government and somewhat at a loss at how best to pull themselves out of it. I didn't see these comments as a slam, but a statement of a condition where hope is a thin commodity and where people will need more than prayer, guns and flag-waving to move to the next step. They need a leader with vision and new ideas...Obama has the opportunity to complely flip this controversy into articulating his plans and vision for the disaffected rustbelt...I'm afraid he's losing that window of opportunity. In the end, this shrill excuse to create an "issue" will only confirm the opinions of those who have made up their minds in this race. But it does again highlight the rabid shrill attack instincts of HRC as a contrast to the thoughtful and measured tenor of the OB campaign. I know which approach I prefer.

Just when I thought I couldn't like her any less...

For the record, that is not at all what Obama was saying, as anyone who cared to listen to the comments in context would know.

What Obama was saying is that Americans don't tend to vote based on economic policy because they don't have any confidence that the politicians will stand up for them against the corporate interests who currently rule Washington. He then said that because average Americans know that politicians won't support them on economics, they choose to vote based on other issues like guns and religion. He was in no way saying that these people "cling" to their guns or religion like crazy zealots. He was instead saying Americans make the rational (and disheartening) choice to support politicians based on these partisan issues where politicians tend to live up to their word.

Obama is saying that his way is different. He will stand up for the average American on economic issues. So whether you're a cultural conservative who is pro-life but is also worried about the economy or you're a pro-gun advocate who has concerns about healthcare, you should consider voting for Barack Obama.

Abortion and gun control are important and divisive issues that it may be difficult to get consensus on. Corporate tax breaks for the rich, the outsourcing of American jobs, unfair environmental standards, these are things that affect all Americans, regardless of your stance on some of the cultural issues. Barack Obama stands with all working Americans together on this issue. He will not take money for lobbyists and his campaign cannot be bought. He will fight for the working class because that is more important to him than money or keeping his rich friends happy.

I just want to respond to the idea that only Clinton's supporters will disengage from the Democratic party if their candidate does not get the nominaton. Or that only Obama supporters sling vitriol and mud. I have read comments by Hillary supporters that stray way beyond facts into character assassination and make racist references to the hilt. For example, how many times have I read a comment by a Hillary supporter spreading the LIE that Obama is a Muslim?

My point is that there is vitriol on both sides and both camps will be sorely disappointed if their candidate does not get the nomination. However, with Obama, at least at this point, there will at least be a sense of fair play-- more delegates, more popular votes, more states. By sheer virtue of the fact that more folks have voted for him, a Hillary nomination will alienate more people than an Obama nomination. And consider the constituencies that will be alienated if this comes to pass- youngsters just wading into politics who represent the future of the party and the Dem's most stalwart supporters, the African American community.
That'd be a bad tactical move, I'd say. We've got stop this nonsense soon and get our act together. If the issues are really what Hillary (and her supporters) care about, how about she (and they) start talking about them? That way we wind down this primary season without beating each other up. How about that? We are supposed to be rooting for the same team in the end for pete's sake.

If Hillary had conducted " live " interviews with rural voters asking their feelings about Mr. Obama's remarks it might have been a little more believable. I can see thru all this melodrama and I am sure many, if not most, people can too. Enough already!

There is very little substantive difference between the 2 candidates.

This campaign has become one of personalities and or trust.

Some can see past sex.
Others can see past race.
Some can see past both.

So, whom do we trust?

Personally I think all politicians are corrupt.
The exception being Mr. Smith.

So I tend to go with the one with the least experience
hoping this will be the least corrupt candidate.

Obviously this cannot be the only basis to make a decision but I feel it's a good start.

Sounds to me like Hillary is the "bitter" one since her elitist self did not wrap up the nomination after Super Tuesday like she thought she would.

To the person wondering about all the money Obama has raised - look at it this way - he needed to introduce himself more to an electorate than any other candidate that was running. Additionally, he has had to fight off attacks about his background, race, and religion that other candidates have not. That he is where he is, leading in total delegates, total states and total votes and has closed such a huge super delegate gap to less than 30 at this point in time, shows how strong of an organizer, manager and leader he is. That he has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to join the Democratic Party and vote, that he has the younger generation so inspired that they can convince their parents to support him - all point to one thing to me. Barack Obama is one of those once in a generation leaders who truly can make our country better and lead the US ecnomically, globally, into the future.
