Dear Geoff:

Thanks for the invitation to write to you with my thoughts and/or advice. Here is what I now think:

Drop out. That would be my advice. Your team put up a good fight but it's over. You're actually making a lot of us very tired.

Have your candidate make her speech on Tuesday evening thanking the wonderful people of PA - and the entire country - and then have her throw her support to Senator Obama for unity's, the Party's and America's sake. She could go out as a winner on a high note.

This would instantly restore her greatly diminished credibility and get back the support she has lost within the party and the Senate. Once this is all over - and Obama is the nominee - she will not be greatly comforted by the remaining support of white women over 55 (I'm 57), and working class "Reagan/McCain Dems. She will have lost the base, the party elite and her peers in the Senate if she keeps pushing this.

Once she endorses Obama she can then become a true leader in the Senate and help President Obama to shape and pass legislation. Eventually she can replace Harry Reid. Would this not be good for you and Howard going forward as well?

Otherwise, she will walk away from this, still the loser, but with culpability (deserved or not) for damaging what had been shaping up as a transcendent Democratic year. I cannot imagine why she does not wish to be a positive part of this opportunity, nor can I imagine that she - and you - do not now see that she is not the one to bring this agenda home.

It's too late for her to become the nominee in any real world scenario other than one which would be so bitterly divisive that's the thought alone is horrific. Pick the right time and make a rousing endorsement speech on Tuesday for Senator Obama. Those negatives will get cut in half, Bill's legacy will be restored and her (and your) successful future will be assured.

I hope you've taken this advice in the spirit in which it was intended...as an honest and caring response to your invitation.

Unfortunately, a substantial amount of it comes from the former president himself. After all the dust settles, people will say that Bill Clinton was one of the main reasons that HRC did not receive the Democratic nomination.

It's actually kind of sad. She is an amazing, accomplished woman, and I believe that she would make a great president. However, her husband and surrogates are so self-centered that they go off message and do whatever they want. She can't push her agenda for constantly cleaning up behind her surrogates.

At this point, it's a numbers game. Obama is going to be the nominee. I do think HRC will be a great Senate majority leader, and I still think that in an election cycle or 2, she will be able to staff her campaign with better people to manage her money and her image without looking like wreckless sleazeballs.

As for "memos" from Senator Obama's campaign, this is nonsense. I just watched Senator Clinton implicitly blame sexism again for her failure to beat Senator Obama -- first, if this is true, how does she think she could win in the fall when the majority of voters will be men, when she had difficulty in the Democratic primary, the majority of voters are women? second, I wish she would stop claiming this since I believe it hurts the chances of the next woman who runs for President.

Senator Clinton's campaign cannot be solely about she is the first woman running for President or the next woman candidate may be burdened with all of the baggage created by Senator Clinton in this campaign.

As for Senator Obama playing the "race" card, this seems so absurd. The majority of Democratic voters are woman and white. Playing the "sexism" card makes sense in the short-term (though I wish she would stop it); playing the "race" card would be stupid. Senator Obama has proven he campaigns effectively not stupidly.

Senator Obama is running a campaign based on his vision for the future of this Country -- this is about us and our ability to believe we can work to make our own Country better. Senator Clinton's problem is that she has never articulated any vision; she has borrowed liberally from all of the candidates, but she has no singular vision for where she would take this Country, how she would get 10 point plans turned into law, or why 78% of the superdelegates should ignore the will of the voters and hand her the nomination.
