Let's not be confused here - which apparently the media already is. Rev. Wright has been saying the exact same things for TWENTY YEARS! It's not as if he just starting spewing this vile hate speech in the last two days. Obama is only denouncing him now because it is hurting his candidacy. I would like to know why Obama stuck around for the last twenty years?

Obama loves to answer Hillary's "experience" argument with a "judgment" argument. Denouncing Rev. Wright after a loss in PA and in the run up to NC and IN does not demonstrate good judgment. Denouncing him years ago - at the first sign of racist or anti-Semitic language would have demonstrated good judgment. Unfortunately for Obama, it's far too late for that.

This move was purely political and I no longer have any respect for Obama as a result. My copy of The Audacity of Hope goes in the trash tonight.

It's a shame that it has come to this. I think his pastor was given the shaft by the Clinton's and the Republicans. Yes, he said some outrageous things, but I'd be willing to bet that they were delivered in the context of sermons based on scripture from the Old Testament prophets. In those passages, it clearly teaches that a country that doesn't demonstrate justice for the poor is subject to God's judgment. (I'm a white upper middle class evangelical, byt he way.)

Anyway, hopefully Rev Wright will quit stirring the pot so that Obama can do his best to put the issue behind him.

Obama never called Wright his mentor and spiritual adviser. The media did. Let's quote this man right. He has siad he is like family. And one this we know is that BO is not very political (like wont sign up to the panderous holiday gas tax of 18 cents - heck we were buying this stuff at $2 a short while ago, will speak his mind on why he thinks folks do not vote their economic interest but rather issues such as guns, and would not initially denounce a pastor whose political views did not represent his mixed heritage and inclusive background).

These two guys can not be more different from their utterances (Baracks since 2004):

1. One is a lawmaker and aspiring president and the other a pastor

2. one is even tempered, and throughful whether he's up or down, attacked or praised while the other is flamboyant in speech and style and contorversial and appears attention-seeking.

3. One talks constantly about similarity (no red or blue states but he united states, we are one under the stars and stipes, coming together to solve common problems and bring down common obstacles)m the other quickly delves into talking about differences (although here he did end on reconciliation).

4. One is black and focuses on black issues, the other is from black and white background and brought up by white parents and focuses on all issues.

Let anyone who agrees with everyone close to them that they willingly associate with remain critical on this board after the thoughful denounciation today for which Wright gave him no choice based on questioning his political integrity! One thing we have seen from Obama is whether it hurts or not he speaks his beliefs (as with the gas tax and earlier explanation of why Wright is the way he is, or why voters do not vote their econmoic interest but rather vote focused on less central issues). We should not let him lose because he is not a panderer and a great politician that tells us what we want every 4 years.

How can he sit in church for 20 years and listen to this man. WE all do this every week. CAtholics listening to priests that are rumored and later confirmed as pedophiles. Christians listening to controversial pastors. We all take the best and feed spiritually and sometimes leave behind a few of the social stuff.

By the way, Wright was not saying the studd of the past 3 days (and not all was bad) for 20 x 52 weeks x 60 minutes. The worst of his previous statements ere condensed in 2 minutes.

As a Democrat 1st, and a Clinton supporter 2nd, I felt for Obama as he continued to distance himself from his former preacher and/or "spititual mentor". I think he did what was difficult & probably politically necessary... and did a good job!

But, if we are to open a National dialogue on race and race relations in this country, we may have to address the "radical reactionary" element that was present at the National Press Club for Wright's performence.

And, who are we, or Obama, to say that this view is outside of the mainstream if we have never experienced the level of racism that Wright referred to and to which his audience cheered... it MUST be shared by at least a few... and that MAY be too many. But,if our eventual goal is to eliminate racism; we will very definitely have to resolve the premise & perceptions on which it is built. That may mean, as Wright suggested, a National apology for slavery and the Jim Crow eras. It may mean that we take a better look at how we are currently talking about race.... OR ignoring it!

Wright's view is (dare I call it) bitter? But not in the way that we have discredited the feeling of late - but as Gary Younge writes in an article in THE NATION magazine entitled "The Obama Effect" as a member of the Old School of Black Leaders - Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Andy Young - Even Donna Brazil & Donna Edwards seem to have been left out of this young "transitional" Obama movement. Bitter may very well be the feeling that results after all the suffering of the last 100 yrs to watch a "new generation", like Obama, reap the rewards without the investment.

And, instead of being included as heirs to the civil rights movement - they of Wright's generation watch as Younge calls it this new generation - ("...itself a crude political construct built on wishful thinking...") determined to move beyond the mood and methods of their forebears... writes author Terence Samuel in TNE AMERICAN PROSPECT. That would seem to leave behind an entire generation (Wright's?) - the ones who did all the HARD WORK of the civil rights movement!

So, where we all may agree with Obama's decision to "get past this issue" it still leaves the "dream of reconciliation" not just unrealized, as Younge suggested; but now deferred to another time or place or... election. Or, until it is politically expedient to do so.

And until then I STILL do not understand why Race, or Gender for that matter, do NOT qualify as legitimate ISSUES in this campaign - both certainly have been part of our National Landscape and National nightmare longer than ALL of the current more popular issues!

But theses are 2 issues that will NEVER be able to be resolved in 1 minute snippets and 10 second sound bytes... so let them run their course in our news cycles... even if "bitter" is all we come away with, at least we are no longer dismissing or sweeping the issues under the political rug!

Now knee deep in religion and race Obama wades on. As an evangelical, I have perceived a genuine and poignant faith struggle going on that I have related to at a deep level. I hope other evangelicals join me in supporting Obama. We can let go of the abortion issue that conscientiously inspired many of us to vote for Bush... Alito and Roberts now balance the Supreme Court. I guess I never really understood the religion thing.

In our neighborhood, we were all good catholics. All the boys and girls in the neighborhood thought the nuns and priests were mean. They used to scare the daylights out of us. Never a kind word to any of us. Going to confession was a nightmare at first, but we figured out the system. Just lie.

As the years went on and we became 12-13 years old, we all used to sit outside on the curbs in the summer, smoking cigarettes and pointing to each house and gossiping, trying to determine whose mother or father had strayed in their marriages, what nun smacked what child with a ruler.

You know, the usual stuff.

Such was life in a good catholic community. As children, we all managed to survive it quite well with a great deal of humor.

And since I have grown up, nothing in the religious community has changed on iota.

Shame on you media. What hypocrites in the way you reported this whole Rev. Wright story. You probably all go to church too.

Senator Obama is 100 times the person any of you are.

Happy now? Sen. Obama has denounced his pastor. Controversy over. It’s time for First Read, CNN, Faux News, ABC, CBS, Alessandra Stanley, Bob Herbert, Wolf Blitzer, David Gergen, Dana Milbank, Jonah Goldberg, Rush Limbaugh, et al, to go back to the drawing board and manufacture the next diversion.

Or some of you could start behaving like journalists and stick to the real issues.

Please step back and ask the fundamental question:

Is Barack a racist?
Does Barack hate America?

I think most people, looking at Senator Obama's life, would have to answer no even if you diagree with his politics. Thus, while it makes good television, I think this whole Wright saga is overblown.

Is this really the key factor in deciding with Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is better able to lead this nation. I feel so sad that this is what our politics has become.

This was the right thing to do, and I respect Sen. Obama for his judgment and character. Now, can we please move on and talk about real issues like the war in Iraq, education, the environment, the economy, etc.? Is that too much to ask, media echo chamber? Enough is enough.

Yeah, I don't buy that anybody who supported Obama is suddenly inflamed by what is going on. You simply didn't like him anyway. Just remember, some of us cannot understand why anyone would support Clinton (do anything and everything to get elected) and McCain the warmonger/bankrupter of our country.

I actually sat through the whole Obama farce this afternoon and except for Pat Buchanan who brought up some very obvious points, ie, Obama's credibility, the media were in their, "Could this be the turning point mode?" Obama is the love that keeps on giving. At least the good Rev honestly states what he feels, I'll give him that much, but that Obama is such a fraud. And for such a good Christian it's amazing how many Sundays he was absent from services.

They're rejoincing to distract attention from their sorry record of supporting a trillion-dollar war.

Idiots will vote on the Wright Issue (read: racists) instead of who has the REAL integrity and honesty to run the Presidency.

Unlike HIllary and McWalkingCane who'll just tell you what you want to hear (like gas tax "holiday"). Pathetic.

OH MY GOSH! Can we please just mmoooooove on already?!!! Rev. Wright is NOT Barack Obama. We keep beating these sound bites into the ground as if they came from Obama's mouth! Please, please people! We are now at a point where either we will vote for Obama or not. Making excuses for why you will or will not vote for Obama based on what someone else says is not only shallow ... it's stupid. Frankly, I believe Obama is too decent and too honorable of a person to be America's Next President. The way the media, the talking heads, and some of you are foaming at the mouth over the Rev. Wright story just reinforces my belief that America is too obsessed with reality tv-like sensationalism and Big Mac glutony to realize that we are in a major turning point. We have REAL issues (economy, terrorism, health care, social security, etc) that we should be focusing our attention on for ourselves and our children's sake. Instead we continue day after day with dribble about Rev. Wright, Bosnia, and joint vs seperate tax returns.

In the end, out of the 3 remaining candidates, I believe Obama is the best person to lead our country out of the Bush years of foreign and domestic destruction.

I just wonder if the masses are too caught up in the media induced soap opera to remember what we are supposed to be voting for a President, not America's Next Top Model.
