I'm glad Mike Fischer gets that Barack is 'the real deal.' What's clear is that every time folks have the opportunity to have some 'face time' with him, they are convinced of his sincerity, his ability to listen and empathize, and that he's a regular guy -- not some stuck up elitist, as folks have tried to make him out.

If you read Barack's books, you get the same understanding -- where he comes from, what his struggles have been to find his identity and what his commitments have always been -- to bring improvement to the lives of people who have been kicked to the curb by bad public policies that have shut them out of opportunity.

It is worth noting that the primary in NC and IN and ultimately the election hinge on a bet by two of the candidates that low information voters will believe their preposterous assertions that a "gas tax holiday" will help them pay their fuel bills this summer.
Anyone with a high school level education in economics will tell you a gas tax holiday will actually have the effect of raising gasoline prices. The consumer will simply never see a dime and the oil companies will make even higher profits. Not to mention the fact that it might put as many as 300.000 people out of work when the country is reeling from job losses or drive our debt even higher.

It is simply impossible to even suggest that such a measure could be introduced much less pass through congress before the end of the summer given nobody but McCain and Clinton support it in congress.

We are witnessing an epic and historic clash of old and new politics, one rooted in pander and deception of the past and one with the promise of truth and transparency.

My vote is for Senator Obama

Why do they keep saying he hasn't won white voters. He has done so in all the states he won, twice as many as HRC, except the few where Hillary had connections. Hillary gets all this hoopla for NH but she only won by a few points. This has been his two toughest weeks and he still holds on to the national lead so I see a comeback kid moment. Obama's closing argument is about the gas tax? This is why he can't close the sale with the American people. It's not his position on the gas tax that is preventing people from buying what he is selling, it is his preacher and white voters' lack of identification with him that is the issue.

Obama missed a key opportunity to close the sale in Pennsylvania when he responded to the Wright controversy citing his white grandmother, but for privacy reasons did not bring her out to meet the American public. From what I've heard, she woud be a resonant figure with the white working-class voters he so desperately needs to make inroads with.

Yes, I understand the hesitation to bring her out into the limelight. But come on, he's got the money to hire professional handlers who can run a very tightly controlled media event. What is going to get these voters to move to him? The Obama campaign hand-selected photo of Barack with his white grandmother accompanying a further denunciation of Wrights comments as offensive to him.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk or 'playing the race card', but well.. that's what he needs to do.

There are significant deficiencies in Obama's message: In the interest of a "nice" campaign he avoids putting the "bitter" truths in front of the American people. We need someone on the same trajectory as Obama, but with more "gonads" to be able to speak truth to power.. the "POWER" in this case being the American People!
Here are the omissions as I see them:
1. The BUSH-MCCAIN-CLINTON war (also called the War in Iraq) has directly cost our treasury One Trillion Dollars! That, spread out over 125 million taxpayers comes out to $8000 per Taxpayer! That's the money that has been just burnt on our behalf! Of course we could have decided to give that wasted money to our 5 million unemployed.. in which case, each unemployed fellow citizen of ours would have received the "paltry" sum of $200,000 per taxpayer!
And Hillary-McCain want to do what now? give us a "holiday" on our "gas tax" and save us $30!!!! And some of our fellow citizens are willing to buy that BS uncritically! Barnum and Bailey were wrong about a fool being born every minute. Should have said a "moron" born every minute!

3. The Clinton-BUSH-McCain War was a bloody piece of theatre that devastated a country and alienated the majority of mankind. It allowed attention to be diverted from the abject failure of two administrations (Clinton and Bush) in responding to the threat of terror (Tanzanian embassy, Mogadishu, Cole bombing... the list is much longer than that), leading ultimately to 9/11. Rather than confess their failure and get out of the way, they launched this war against a country that had helped us curb the Shiite menace from Iran, and was no threat to us.. simply to create the illusion of doing something!

3. In the War Against Terror, the Terrorists run free to do their mischief, while our Liberties and Rights have been severely curtailed, including the abominable suspension of Habeas Corpus... a right established after a 1000 years of civilization in Britain, has been deftly removed at the stroke of the Presidential pen. And this while the cream of our youth is shedding its blood to "preserve our freedom"!

The American people need to wake up, and the problem is that no one, includinng Barack Obama, has the guts to deliver the wakeup call/bad news. We still need a leader with the courage to say "The Emperor has no clothes!"

It is too bad that we will have to wait another 4 years for someone with that courage to emerge out of our political process.

It's boiled down to this, Obama inspires me to believe that maybe we can actually change our country through a Presidential election. Afer 8 years of GWB and after having the 2000 election stolen from the Democratic Party, I've been very skeptical over voting for any politician. Obama's message of change and his clear stances against politics that divide us instead of uniting us and his opposition to clear pandering from the Clinton and McCain camps, it really makes me believe maybe we have found a new type of politician and if he's elected, maybe future presidents will be held to similar standards of ethics, honor, and truthfulness.

He's right:

40% of our oil isn't imported, we provide it to ourselves.

The next highest % of oil we get in the US comes from Canada.

After Canada, then it's Mexico.

The 4th highest % comes from Saudi Arabia, then Venezuela.

I'll admit, after researching this, I've come across different data after Canada, but % wise, it's minimal.

There is no logical reason that oil costs so much per barrel today other than the weak dollar and commodity speculators driving up the price due to the stock market woes.

Unfortunately, when the Fed cuts interest rates, the Wall Street people seem to like it, however at the same time it also weakens the dollar even more. Since oil is linked to the US dollar, the weaker the US dollar is the more US dollars it takes to buy that barrel of oil.

We’re in a quagmire. The only way out is to change our philosophies.

A “gas tax holiday” would be the worst thing that could happen to the American people. We need to discourage consumption. The only way to get gas prices to start going down is to limit demand.

Although the way to get around all this is extremely unpopular and most likely unachievable, we need to stop consuming gas in excess. At the very least, we need to mandate some kind of consumption laws.

The actual solution is to increase the tax on oil and effectively force demand down. Take the newly created tax money and give it back to the people in the form of jobs, jobs, jobs.

The resultant outcome being a real stimulus program that circulates that money back into the economy.

If we can get the American people to strike (boycott/extremely limit their use of oil/gasoline), then Washington would have no choice than to finally take action.

We could effectively shutdown the whole worlds economy by taking a stand against “Big Oil“.

Americans did this a couple hundred years ago in Boston. They called it the “Boston Tea Party”.

We now need to have a "Texas Oil Tea Party"!

The gas tax relief is not worth the 30 cents a day it will save most Americans. To me 30 cents a day is not worth several people's jobs, jobs that are their livelihood, jobs that pay their rent, feed their families etc. I am not willing to get 30 cents to sacrifice the livelihood of others. If I were a superdelegate today, I would line behind Obama. If you can't be convinced by his stand in the gas tax debate between him and Senators Clinton and McCain, I don't know what else will convince you. Like Fischer said, the man is the real deal.
