If Barack Obama truly wanted to bring the political discussion back to the critical issues facing America, why did he not take up the challenge from Hillary Clinton to a face-to-face debate, without press moderators, before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries? Hitting the basketball court to shoot hoops, taking the family on a picnic, and having what amounted to a one-hour free ad on Meet the Press are hardly impressive. Hillary Clinton’s gasoline/energy policies are very complex. It would have been more informative and fair for voters to hear both sides of this debate from both candidates instead of Tim Russert’s simplistic, questioning response, “It’s a pander?” and Barack Obama’s easy reply, “Yes.” Instead of debating his opponent face-to-face and demonstrating his leadership and experience, he fled to take cover. Instead of Barack and Hillary with no moderator, we got Barack and Tim with no Hillary.

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America

What would possibly keep the oil companies from driving up the cost of gas to make up their losses to the higher taxes, especially given the reduction in gas tax? They'd take the federal highways' share immediately, and raise prices beyond that - claiming that the windfall profits tax forced them to.

Two more things about it -

1. It won't pass in the 20 days left before Memorial Day, and couldn't under the rosiest of scenarios - even if it had support from more than two Senators who haven't been around the Senate for a year. And, it won't pass without George Bush favoring it ... how does he feel about a windfall profits tax on oil?

2. Pass the windfall profits tax anyway, but use the revenue to lead development of alternative fuels.

Ralph in Chicago is quite correct. There's no chance either McCain or Hillary's proposals would make it through the Senate, let alone the House or the Shrub. Pelosi's against it, the Shrub's against it. The Dems would shut McCain down either directly or put an amendment in to add the windfall tax, while the GOP would put an amendment to strip the windfall tax from Hillary's version. And in the end, McCain loses on party lines at best, and Hilary loses worse because Obama would show up and put a statement in, and his supporters would vote against it as well, along with the GOP.

Not to mention that today is May 4. May 26 is Memorial Day, the start of the holiday period they want. There's no chance they'd railroad that through the Senate, especially with the Iraq supplemental sitting there to come up this week or next. That doesn't even mention the GOP forcing 60-vote margins just to proceed to debate a bill, then forcing another vote to close debate on a bill, and making them take the full 30 hours of debate in each case...even if in the end the GOP votes for it.

Hillary's problem is this. She's playing a game for superdelegates, because she can't take the pledged delegate lead. Her best argument for supers is the popular vote lead, which she can't take without a variety of convoluted metrics. But by throwing out this gas tax holiday argument, I think she's showing those supers that she doesn't know what she's doing and isn't paying attention to experts, and thus is hurting herself. Because two others against her proposal? The governor of NC and some former president named Clinton. She's on a ledge and her only company is the GOP nominee...not a good place to be.

There's a reason that Obama does better with those with a college education and those who are college age, and it's nothing demeaning. Typically those 2 groups have better access to cable news and the internet and have the ability to do research for themselves. Typically the older or less well-off will get their information from the 30 second sounds bites they hear on their local news every night. If people don't get the opportunity to hear the whole story on something how can we expect them to make educated voting decisions.

This is our chance everyone. If you know anyone in IN at all give them a call in the next 2 days. Fill them in, let them know what they've been missing.
Explain to them that her supporters agree the gas holiday is a bad idea.
Explain to them when asked this morning to name a credible economist who agress with her she couldn't and instead replied "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists."
Explain to them her staff has come out and said that the President doesn't have to listen to experts when making a decision.
Explain to them the lie she has been telling about the Magnequench plant in IN.

I'm beginning to be VERY grateful that there are superdelegates to see through the Clinton's CRAP. I'm sorry but I have had it.

On the backs of these good kind hardworking people, they will buy the Presidency from them for thirty cents a day. The Presidency comes pretty cheap these days, I guess.

I want a candidate who will tell truth to our power, who will not sell out this country for thirty cents a day, only to cost our children umpteen times that in a few years.

Holy Cow, have we really come to that...now we need those superdelegates to end this absolute insanity. The superdelegates in their collective judgment is looking pretty good to me now.

So, rather than trying to find the most effective way to put down Hilary (she doesn't have a normal family because her husband cheats and her daughter overachieves. Well, anyone seen the divorce rate or the growth in women attending Law and Med school? Husbands (and wives) cheat and their children fight their way to the top. Her family outline seems pretty darn normal to me) or the best way to put down Barak (out of touch. Well, yes, all three of the candidates are millionaires. I don't care what their personal net worth is if they support the policies I support).

How about we distinguish how they will beat John McCain, because right now he's the lumbering turtle in this rabbit race and to be effective in November both candidates must finds ways to distinguish themselves by beating *him* down.

Clinton doesn't want to spend 100 years in Iraq.

Obama doesn't want to overturn Roe V Wade and bring coat-hangers into the bathrooms of our daughters, mothers and wives.

McCain is the real enemy, I am cool with passionate debate but I know come November, I will vote for *anyone* rather than John McCain.

Both candidates do it for me.

I am a Obama supporter, and in all fairness to Msnbc and the rest of the MSM, if they were to cover all the campaigns fairly Obama would have been the democratic nominee since the end of March. Here is why we as interested dnc party members have to be very careful in choosing Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

First of all, to overcome the odds, she is at this time a huge long shot. Regardless of our vote in Indiana, she will have to convince the hand of super delegates to back her. Super delegates are in turmoil now because of the scandal of Peter Paul vs. the Clinton's which ultimately will hit the news lines much harder than a Jeremiah Wright or bitter-gate remarks.

Obama may have baggage, but the Clinton scandals are considered by party powers as already magnificent and many know the Clinton foundation funds are not all above board. Even today she dodged the donor issue on ABC.

Also remember, her husband goes back into the wall of our countries most sacred home having committed infidelity in those very halls. He is one of only two American presidents to have been impeached. The GOP blogs are built are really ugly, you only have to go to the web to begin finding them. They are infuriating but nonetheless much more inflammatory than those built against the Illinois senator.

Lastly, Clinton as nominee will see a huge number of new registered voters along with the money they have been donating to the dnc party going to a third party such as Ralph Nader or will simply stay home. Hillary is out of touch with families. She was out of touch in the nineties when she mocked stay-at-home moms and she is today when she mocks those of us who ARE bitter about the tough economic times. She is out of touch with families when she acts self righteous about Barack's pastor but yet she is married to a man who acts like a dog and lied about it under oath.

In Barack Obama, I see a family man who wants to do what is right, not what is politically opportunistic.
