Among the other disasters which define the Bush-Cheney-McCain administration, what these people have done to the federal judiciary has escaped notice. Not every appointment is a disaster, but collectively, friends, the courthouse doors in your federal courthouses have been nailed shut, slowly and surely, under this terrible, terrible administration. It will take 20 years to even begin to fix the damage.

The only real citizens in court are criminal defendants.

John McCain is shameless. The whole point of the "Gang of 14" was to PREVENT both types of activist judges -- conservative as well as liberal -- from getting elected.

It's a good thing I wasn't allowed to vote in 2000 (I was 16). I might have registered as a Republican, and I definitely would have done everything I could have to get John McCain elected. I wondered for a long time if he could've made a better president than Bush; now, I'm frightened that he could possibly be worse.

He should be careful what he wishes for, conservative judges might decide that being born in Panama disqualifies him from being President.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population and they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas. The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

Here are the characteristics that I want in a President.

* Honesty -- I can handle the truth no matter how bad, much better than I can handle being lied to.
* Intelligence -- smart enough to listen to ALL sides of an issue before making an intelligent decision.
* Wisdom -- the insight to know when to change course when appropriate. Sometimes changing positions on an issue based on new facts is not a "flip-flop" but rather the right thing to do.
* Tolerance -- not pandering, but tolerance of those who are different.
* Diplomacy. I want us talking to EVERYONE on the planet (at different levels). The "with us or against us" philosophy has not made the world any safer, but rather more volatile.
* The ability to recognize and recruit the appropriate talent to run each of the various federal agencies, and not fill these posts with hacks who are determined to dismantle or eviscerate them.

And lastly, poise. I want someone who will not embarrass this country while being it's representative, unlike the last 7+ years of the cowboy, frat house, cheerleader who is mocked (rightly) by the rest of the world. I don't care if s/he drinks beer or wine or boilermakers, but they better know which spoon to use at state dinners. So yes, a little bit of elitism will be a very welcome trait.

This time, let's elect someone who better resembles "Cary Grant" in manners than "Lou Costello".

"Activist Judges"....That's quite a well-crafted term. Rove and Rush have banked on that word and it has served them well. Ever thought about what it means? If, it means a judge who snubs precedent, stretches statutory text, and inserts his personal and plitical beliefs into his opinions, then Scalia and Alito are the most activist of the bunch, with Roberts not far behind. Read some of their opinions. For example, Scalia is known for citing "history" as a guide to his decisions when he favors a certain outcome. If however, history has not favored the outcome he desires, he describes the past as "anacronism." This outcome-oriented double standard is a perfect example of judicial activism. But, it sure is a cute word that so-called conservatives have used very effectively in their sound-bites. More of the same...

I believe McCain is a good man. But I believe his principles have been eroded in his pursuit of the Presidency and for that I am truly saddened. As someone who remembers Iran-Contra and Reagan's "I have no recollection" mantra (only to discover that he did indeed have Alzheimer's) it scares me that perhaps Senator McCain may already be inflicted with early dementia and that is why his judgement and values seem in contrast with how he presented himself in the past and how he has changed positions on his positions so many times.
