President Bush announced at a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki earlier this morning that the United States will stay in Iraq for as long as necessary: "this business about a graceful exit simply just has no realism to it at all."  His expressions of strong support for Maliki ("the right guy for Iraq") came after a leaked three-week-old memo by his national security advisor raised doubts about Maliki's abilities, and Maliki canceled a scheduled dinner with Bush last night.

"Senior Bush aides offered at least four explanations for the cancellation - finally dispatching a more junior official to tell reporters late Wednesday that Maliki and Jordan's King Abdullah II had decided mutually that a three-way conversation was not necessary," says the Los Angeles Times

The Iraq Study Group plans to present its findings to Bush, Congress, and the public on December 6, one day after Defense Secretary nominee Robert Gates has his confirmation hearing.  Incoming Senate Foreign Relations chair and presidential candidate Joe Biden is expected to then schedule hearings about the group's recommendations.

But with his "no graceful exit" comment, Bush has already rejected one of their suggestions.  The New York Times, in another front-page scoop, says the group's final report will recommend a gradual pullback of 15 American brigades (a brigade typically consists of 3,000 to 5,000 troops) -- but will stop short of setting a firm timetable for withdrawal.  “It is a compromise between distinct paths that the group has debated since March, avoiding a specific timetable, which has been opposed by Mr. Bush, but making it clear that the American troop commitment should not be open-ended.”

The Washington Post reports that the "findings dovetail with recommendations being considered by the military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, who are conducting their own review...  That group is leaning toward an option that involves a brief surge of troops in Iraq, followed by a partial drawdown and a shift from combat operations to training and advising, according to sources familiar with the process."

The Washington Times says the Joint Chiefs "oppose pulling out U.S. troops now, and are also against a specific withdrawal timetable."

USA Today says of all three reviews of the Iraq situation currently being done, including one by the White House, "All the options carry downsides and dangers...  The war has become a Rubik's Cube: Move to fix one side of the puzzle and another side is upended."

Observing that none of the various reviews are expected to produce bold suggestions, the Washington Post's Milbank cheekily calls the Iraq Study Group the "the Men's Vogue Study Group" after NBC's Andrea Mitchell reported that members of the group had posed for a magazine photo shoot and the Post rooted out which one.  Milbank also notes that Senate Democrats, for their part, called yesterday for "(drum roll, please)" a special envoy to Iraq.

"The civil war in Iraq is likely to deteriorate significantly over the next few months regardless of which combination of options the Bush administration chooses to exercise, according to a report released by" the Center for Strategic and International Studies yesterday.  The report "dismisses as 'dishonest' the Bush administration’s claims to have readied more than 100 Iraqi military units for combat, pointing out that the true number is probably less than a third of the Pentagon’s estimate."  It also "takes strong issue with the notion that Washington can simply put pressure on [Maliki] to push harder for conciliation between Iraq’s clashing sectarian groups."

The United States had no plausible reason to go into Iraq in the first place and now the country has been catapulted into a Civil War, mostly caused by George W. Bush and his vendetta's. It seems hopeless in the simplest of terms and no one knows where to run. We went in their to overthrow their leader becasue he was a " big threat" to the national security of the United States. He may have been a monster in his own country and talked alot of talk but he was never the threat we were made to believe and ironically enough WE went into their country and basically ruined it for the people their all in the name of democracy. Im sure you cannot speak to any Iraqui citizen and have them tell you their lives are better since the US went in to save them, They have no Infrastructure, no real government, and no future. Its a shame and no one can say differently.
Imagine that...Bush talking about realism.
Can you say 'President Vilsack'? How about "President Hillary'? The Democrats can run the Unabomber in '08 and win. They thank you, Dubya.
Rumsfeld was the "right" guy a week before he was fired and now al-Maliki is the "right" guy. How can we expect the Shiites and the Sunnis to get together in Iraq when their Shiite leader won't even sit down with the Sunni leader of another nation. Bush wants the Iraquis to include Jordan and Saudi Arabia in talks and the Iraquis want to include Syria and Iran. What a mess!!!! I hope everyone who was so quick to jump on the Bush Bandwagon to attack a country who did not attack us first and those who chose to call people who opposed this war might just admit you had an error in judgement.
If His Impeccable Judgementness says we have the right guy in his nation building, treasury-draining experiment, I say: "Crisis avoided!" What were we worried about? What reason has this man ever given us to suggest he's just a raging idiot, like some sort of oil and alcohol-fueled Louis XVI? I think GWB is probably the best Holy Flying Monkey this country has ever had.
President supposed to meet with al Maliki for meeting and dinner. President meet with al Maliki. four different excuses given by State Department. One I heard last night was al Maliki did not want to talk about Israeli-Palestine conflict. President meets with al Maliki in am. Says stay til job done. blosw off Iraq Study Group before they even give their results. This man will be our President until January 20th, 2009. I for one am counting the days.
The American people need to demand that our Senate, Congress, and this Administration "stop" all their jaw jacking and "anal"ysing. This is getting totally ridiculous with the President saying "we will stay the course until our mission is complete no matter what the cost in lives or money". The Pentagon and the Generals saying "we will beef it up kick there ass and then draw down but we've got us a conflict(never declared a war)and we would like to see it last at least 5 or 10 more years no matter what the cost in lives or money". The Iraqi's saying "we want the Americans to stay, but out of our the way (we got some ethnic cleansing to do) keep sending us money and soldiers no matter what it cost in lives or money. I've heard so many say you make your choices and your voice known by voting, well I voted and all I'm hearing is the same "Old Sh--". Really this is totally depressing, it's over we screwed the Iraqi's and their country now let's turn, bow gracefully, tip our fingers to our head and back out slowly showing our simpathy and humility as we leave.
There will be no exit as long as Bush remains in office. He will not be the cut and run president. The strategy of a larger deployment and training the Iraq military to "Stand Up" and fight is the same strategy that was used in Vietnam. The south Vietnamese were never able to stand up and fight the north. As America pulled out the south's army abandon the battle field like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Same will happen in Iraq, if we do not quell the militias and end secretarial fighting. We need to engage the enemy or get out now.
I really get nervous anytime our leader mentions truth, realism, fact, ect. as it seems to preclude a 'spin' (ie blatant lie, distortion of reality) There is no telling what he and his cabal really intend to do in Iraq. To me, the very idea of his royal highness actually using his limited ability to legitimately 'think' of a way out of Iraq is hard to stomach. He would have a very hard time 'thinking' how to escape out of a paperbag, let alone solving the complex mess he got us and the poor Iraqis' into. I wish we had realized the day we elected this guy to lead our great country, it was like giving a loaded handgun to a 4 year old....something bad was gonna happen, the only question was would it be sooner or later?
You're doin' one heck of a job, Maliki!
The President has lost all credibility with the world and the American people.
I nominate soon to be Senator Webb from Virginia. You know, the former Naval Secratary under Reagan. Republican then. Now a Democrat soon to be Senator. He went to the White House and told Bush to take a hike. Sounds like a man not afraid to stand up to the President.
It unthinkable that what Benjamin said could be true but this world event that is unfolding is almost entirely the fault of the US and its buddy Great Britain. Its so freaking embarrassing its hard to discuss. I mean what could anyone say about it. The president of the United states of America took the worst modern day event in our history and has used it against us, which makes the event more catastrophic. Its sickening.
Did anyone ever have a boss that everyone knew was nuts but nobody could do anything about it? The ones that made foolish, idiotic decisions that lost money for the company or made a horrible mess of everything they did.The more normal people were afraid to say anything while this boss is putting the company in jeopordy of going out of business. The boss that abused the sharp, knowledgable workers and had the moronic workers sucking up to their every word and then would put them in charge of important tasks.Did any one remember having the absolute worst boss EVER? Thats who we have now in charge of our country. George W Bush, is THAT BOSS!!
President played a game of Truthor Dare. IAEA sais no weapons od mass destruction in Iraq. Bush said, I am going to invade that country and I dare you to defy me.If you voted for him in 2004, you should be pleased with the results. He dared you and so you should be happy. If you do not like the results and you voted for him, then tell the members of your party,'cause he is still staying the course and he will be our President until January 20 ,2009.
If the American Military can't quell the violence in Iraq, what makes this useless president think that the iraqi's can. He lied to get us into the war and now hes lying again to make us stay. I hope he knows that every death from this so called war is on his head. I think is time to leave and let the country go into civil war and fight it out amongst themselves like the US did years ago. George has caused more hate and discontent in this world then any other world leader i know of except hitler and george is running a close second. I knew Sadam didn't have weapons of mass distruction and i knew george was going in there whether he had them or not. he wanted to clean up daddy's blunder and guess what george has now created his own blunder, except now the US serviceman and women are paying the price along with countless dead iraqi civillians. Can anybody say impeachment. Nobody died when clinton lied. Geroge has real eye opener when dem's take charge in Jan. Can't wait to see him squirm. the dirt bag.
Here is our President's song, taken from The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. You gotta know when to hold and when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away, and when to run. You never count your money ,when its sittin' on the table, time enough for counting when the day is done.Except he would call it The New World Order.
AMMAN, Jordan - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said Thursday that his country's forces would be able to assume security command by June 2007. That does mean Iraq will be ready to assume the SECURITY RESPONSIBLITY for the country by June 2007? He is saying he wants ALL of the IRAQ SECURITY FORCES turned over to HIS CONTROL by June 2007. Currently the US controls all but one or two of the Iraqi Security Force Brigades. Get the translation correct! He said nothing about US Troops leaving. Jim Frego Grants Pass, OR
jan clearwater fl, What you are saying sounds like ENRON.
Let's play a game. Called Where's Waldo ( binLaden) He's in Afhganistan.Oops, got away. I know He's in Iraq. Oh, guess he's not there. gotta find him. What to do. I know invade Iraq. Forget about the people in Afghanistan, we are on to the real deal. Oh my, by gosh by golly, he is not in Iraq. What to do what to do. Create so much fear in the American public's minds. Terror threat. Red level, orange level. Keep them off base. anthrax in Congress. Can't solve that one. Where is Waldo?
What a goat screw! What a gaggle of nonsense. Get out of Iraq soon and let chips fall where they may. We will still have to pick up pieces, but let MidEast try first.
Waldo bin Laden is working w/ john Kerry on public relations matters. Waldo bin Laden has been given an expense acount from Mrs Heinz-Kerry to help pull her spouse's foot out of his big mouth.
Well, Yakien, I think you need to get with the PROGRAM. Obviously, you are not indoctrainated enugh. I think a Red Alert would wake you up. Or maybe not.
Abdullah II and Maliki couldn't say what the real reason was for nixing the three way talk. None of their translators could understand Dubya's syntax.
More than 500,000 Iraqi people & more than 3000 US people were killed by Busha & the clan. He has creatd enimies for US people. He has collected enough enimies for his next lives. Mad man.
Well what do you all guys think Bush is doing in the other side of the world "Sooo worried" about awful goverments and their people... Well unfortunatelly US oil reserve is about to finish... and wehre is the oil?? yeah! you're right... in the other side of the world.. so why not lets go over there with the lame excuse to "help this people and their awful goverments" so we take over and place a puppet leader who of course will lend us all the oil we need... Bush is a sad sad parasite.
