Snow makes it official

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Tony Snow and President Bush made it official that Snow will be stepping down Sept. 14th. Dana Perino will replace him.

“I sadly accept his desire to leave the White House,” Bush told reporters at today’s White House Press Briefing. “It’s been a joy to watch him spar with you.” Bush went on to call Snow “smart,” “capable” and witty and then told Snow, “I accept. I love you, and I wish you all the best.”

Snow said his decision is solely based on money and has nothing to do with his battle with cancer. “I ran outta money,” Snow said. “There’s a lot of people sitting there at home saying, ‘Well whaddya mean, you make all this money.’ Well I made more money in my previous career.”

Snow, who was a conservative pundit on Fox Radio and television, said he had promised his family that he would not dip into its savings. He added that he had taken out a loan “when I came to the White House, and that loan is now gone,” Snow said.

“Cancer has nothing to do with this decision,” he said, adding that his chemotherapy treatment has “held serve.” There are no new tumors and his cancer has not grown.

Snow said he plans to go on the speaking circuit and then write books -- first on battling cancer then likely on politics.

“What will be your lecture fee?” one reporter asked.

“More than you can afford,” Snow replied.

Tony Snow was by far the best appointment President Bush has made during his tenure in the White House. I look forward to when Mr. Snow will be able to freely express his thoughts without the restraints of his current job. GOOD LUCK TONY!
Not into your side of the political spectrum, but Godspeed on your current battle with cancer.
i will and have been praying for snow.  thanks for this article
Man I hope it's money. He didn't look very good in the presser yesterday. May you write many books, and give lots of speeches, make tons of money, and piss off plenty of petty worthless liberals for years to come. GOOD LUCK TONY!!!!!!!
Make a deal with a devil and soon you pay,pay up tony .SO LONG FUNNYMAN lie for the devil when you meet him.
Hmm - I guess another victim of the subprime crisis?

If that is the reason, being as important as the job is and if the president's office and him we both content with each other something could be worked out. If it was the cancer (so much as he couldn't last one more year) he would have said that, and it wouldn't have been right when he was recovering.

One thing is obvious- after two spokesmen resigning, the whitehouse better get the idea it isnt the media causing the low aproval ratings.
I never enjoyed watching Tony Snow "spar" with reporters like the president enjoyed doing.  I'm sorry about his predicament, but so much untruth and hogwash came out of his mouth along with so much partisianship it became unbearable for me to appreciate those press conferences.  Sorry, I will not miss him.
Years ago I like Tony Snow, I thought he was a reputable journalist until he became the Presidents boy. Then I realized how wrong I was. He doesn't have a great deal of credibility at this point.  I'll never forget when the reporters asked why the Iraqi parliamnet was taking August off, he said "Well it gets really hot in Iraq."  He lawyas haas that sort of "let themn eat cake" attitude toward our soldiers.
Can't say that I'll miss him.
YOU stayed way to long at the Fair.
Go home and see you family so they can remember you were there sometimes. Have some good days Tony as you know life is short and shoud not be wasted lying at the WH.
I always thought Snow was full of shh$% just like his predecessor but in a slicker and more professional way. You might actually buy a used car from him (but it would still break down a day later and the tires would be bald)....

I do hope though that it is his concience and not his cancer that is forcing him to step down and that he is on the way to recovery...
“It’s been a joy to watch him spar with you.” (Bush said)
Interesting.
I didn't know that's what a Presidential Press Secretary is supposed to do in a free and open society, where the people rule, and the goverment holds itself accountable to the masses.
I learned something today, about how republiCANTS perceive their accountability to the people.
Thank you for saying that Mr. Bush.
Now I understand.
Snow is saying its the money so the MSM doesn't fawn all over him like they do Liz Edwards.  Tony, you're being silly, you're a Republican, you never have to worry about getting sympathetic treatment from the media.
Nice to see the majority of you lefties can't ever leave politics alone.

I hope none of you ever are as sick as Tony.
Tony has been the best I've ever seen. We finally had someone who could answer those silly people asking the idiotic questions. I wish him all the best in whatever venture he takes on.
“It’s been a joy to watch him spar with you.”--Bush

There it is, folks. The Bush administration views governing this great nation as a gigantic sports event. Life for them is a series of pep rallies--let's go, team...let's nail them...my team will beat your team...winner take all...and more of the same.

A simple theme for a simpleton.
Most people sure would not quit a job if they have cancer. How would the average person pay for cancer treatment without a job and insurance? These are people who do not live in the average person's reality. I have no ill will toward Snow, but he was the official liar for Bush with every word he ever spoke.
Snow is leaving because he is going to die.  Bush and Bolton were notified by Snow in person.  The president asked him to stay through at least through September and Snow respectfully demurred.
Sally Rider -Oh brother. Is the big bad media picking on the poor little Repugs?

I can not believe that you people can pick such asinine things to fight about. You would think that a free and educated person would appreciate the liberty to be able to point out the inadequacies of their governments without losing their heads - literally. But no, the minority - the people who believe the BUSH LIES - has to become all woosie like and start calling people names. Why? Because somewhere inside, they know that they are wrong. Just like the neighborhood bully who calls the little boys geeks and woosies. He too knows that he is wrong, but he to does it to make himself feel better.

I know i would feel like shit if i supported the deaths of over 4,000 YOUNG men and women just because i owned Halliburton stock. But hey, that is just me, the poor weeping liberal that doesn't understand "the big picture."

Hooray for all of the "genious" Bumsfelds of the world. Sally, you are one of them. How does it feel?

I know...i am a coward, unpatriotic, and i should go back to where i came from. Save the name calling Sally, i have heard it all before

- a big bad Mesican n big D.

I am the most disappointed voter in America, having voted twice for that imbicile. Yours and General Powell's are the only good appointments he ever, and will ever, make.
I'm sorry about his predicament, but so much untruth and hogwash came out of his mouth along with so much partisianship it became unbearable for me to appreciate those press conferences.  Sorry, I will not miss him. “What will be your lecture fee?” one reporter asked.

“More than you can afford,” Snow replied.

I am so-so sorry that Tony Snow is leaving. He is the only person in Bush's regime who I truly like. The man is sharp, witty, personable etc.,I pray that his cancer remains contained and that he will be able to arrange many speaking tours. a book would be a welcome sight for many of us. Good, good luck Tony
Tony Snow was paid to do his job..did you expect him to be a totally straight shooter? He's still a good man and I'm sure he's leaving not only b/c of money but he realizes the Bush team is a fast sinking ship.
Tony is pure as driven Snow; Hillary's where the huskies go; So then the Famous Potato; cost Glenn Murphy's election blow; Then as now, we really don't know; Arise for Dana Perino.

Ariel Fleischer translates as the angel/demon demiurge butcher of the Baghdad infowar.
Tony Snow translates as classy ICE ICE baby.
trinity, dallas, tx - rants, on and on and on.

Here's another goof.  Bush lied, Bush did this, Bush did that.  Just another person that can't deal with the fact the world is not perfect, and they have to find someone to blame for their pain.  Typical rant of someone without a clue.  That's why you're a good Democrat trin, you haven't had an original thought in decades.
Regardless of his politics and double speak.  Good bless you, Mr. Snow.
Tony was not hired to dispence the "TRUTH" He was hired because of his ON-THE-TRAINING at FAUX NEWS where masted SPINNING the NEWS. To bad he can not live on $168,000 per year.
In addition to the $168K how much has he made from SPINNING (Speaking) ENGAGEMENTS?

How amazing how little sense of humor so many people have.  Snow is funny, really funny, and too sharp for the pundits to cross him up - yes, sparring is a part of politics - laugh a little and quit taking yourselves so seriously.
"Spar"?  For those who don't speak 'Dubyatalk', it means 'Serving Baloney'.
Randy in Texas - 90% of the people on the board here are Democrats, or so-called "Independents", i.e., they are Democrats, but are too embarrassed to say so.  By definition - Democrats do not have a sense of humor.
Sally Rider, you don't know squat. It's very sad Tony Snow has cancer and is leaving his job. It's also true he spun and spun for his boss, who wasn't some marketing executive or entertainer or business leader, but the damn President of the United States, who some of us think should be held to a higher standard, should have lead this great country in an ethical and democratic manner, and who did not. Tony Snow is not a bad man, for a used car dealer or a real estate salesman, but he represented these United States, and both President and Press Secretary lied and lied and lied to the American people, and there is no honor in that. No honor, do you hear me Sally Rider?
Amy B., just keep up the self denial of your guys and gal.  Bush wasn't going to make the Congress vote on the war, but Hillary, Edwards, Biden and company whined enough, so Bush said, okay vote.  Which way did they vote Amy?  What speeches did they make saying it was the right thing to do Amy?  Do you need a web address so you read the speeches yourself?  These are your all-star team of Democrats that voted for the war.  Now you are so deep in denial, you have to make things up in your mind that that vote never happened.  That is truly a psychological disorder on your part.  The only one that voted against the war was Obama, but nobody much cared at the time what the Illinois Senate thought of the war.  Now, even Obama wants to invade Pakistan on day one of his administration.  What a bunch of losers this crew is, say one thing today, another tomorrow - and people like you follow them around like wimpy little puppies.

Cut the nonsense Amy.

I saw Colin Powell present his evidence to the UN on TV and he did not convince me Iraq was a threat to us before we invaded. What kind of administration goes to war with such unconvincing arguments? From what I understand, members of Congress were treated to closed door briefings where administration officials emphasized more sensitive intelligence - evidence we later learned was manipulated, as the Brits said "fixed around" the policy. As Hillary says, she trusted George Bush, and that was a big mistake. It is clear to me we invaded Iraq because it was weak, not because it was a threat; perhaps we invaded to give us a place in the Middle East to establish a military base. I don't know why else we would invade, since, as Cheney explained would happen in 1994, it has resulted in the destabilization of that region and an unacceptable number of American casualties. What does it say about our country that its citizens can't say for sure why we took that military action and made those sacrifices? And now, Senate Democrats are reviled for trusting a Republican President? It amazes me Republicans will not take responsibility for their policeis, choosing instead to blame Democrats because "they let us do it."
Apparently, Hillary continues to trust George Bush.  She's recently said that we are both safer, and progress is being made.  Well, she said this until the s*** storm of critics from the left went after her, then she went on parsing her sentences, much like her husband has done in the past.  Hillary does like it both ways.

Hillary is just as onboard with the war as Edwards, Biden and Dodd are.  And, now Hillary runs around the country going, "Oh, George Bush fooled me".  She seems to get "fooled" a lot by the men in her life, doesn't she?  First Bill, now George.  And she has the guts to call Obama naive.

Keep supporting this crew Amy.  You're setting yourself up to be sadly disappointed.
?It amazes me Republicans will not take responsibility for their policies, choosing instead to blame Democrats because "they let us do it."?

Reps take responsibility everyday Amy.  By working through the problems and coming up with realistic solutions.  It's the Democrats that agree with something one day, and disagree the next when a poll goes south on them.  Bush has tried to work with the Democrats on multiple issues, the war, immigration, social security, health care.  Support from the Democrats?  None.  Democrats are not just cut and runners on the war, they are cut and runners from every major issue on the table.  You don't see the Democrats taking responsibility for any of their policies.

Republicans are not perfect, far from it.  The Democrats though have shown nothing in coming up with real solutions to any problems.

Good luck with your undying support for the Democrats.
Its not so much that I support the Democrats, its that I have been furious for six years with the Bush administration and the Republican Congress.  Republicans had the majority in Congress, and currently Democrats have a majority of one - not enough to stop Bush. "Immigration Reform" was killed by Republicans to the right of Bush, not "cut and run" Democrats. "Social Security Reform", ie. privatization, was killed by the America public, not Democrats. Bush had his way in the invasion of Iraq, he choose the strategy and the people to implement it, and no one at Fox News or in the Republican party is holding themselves accountable for supporting him. Now, I read about military whistleblowers being punished for reporting corruption, clearly competent Attorney's being fired for not prosecuting enough Democrats, and on, and on, and on, and on...yeah, I'm voting Democratic in '08, and we'll complain about that person too, but clearly whoever is the next President will not be half as incompetent as this one.
Amy B - Republicans had the majority in Congress, and currently Democrats have a majority of one - not enough to stop Bush.

Really?  So, if they Democrat controlled House and Senate don't pass a spending bill to fund the war in Iraq, President Bush can ignore them and continue the war?  Where would he get the money from?  When filbustered in the Senate, you need a majority of 60 votes to pass a bill. But you only need 51 votes, which the Democrats have, to stop a bill from passage. But yet, the spending bills are never stopped.

Bush did implement the Iraq war, which is his job.  Legislation approves and funds it, he runs it.  It's a tough job cleaning up the rats nest in the middle east.  Signing treaties in Rose Gardens with terrorists just doesn't get it done any more.

Immigration reform failed because Senate leader Harry Reid couldn't get his act together to bring in enough Democrats to vote for a bill that favored the Democrats.

SS failed because the Democrats have yet to acknowledge the system is collapsing under its own weight.  Are you depending on SS for your elderly years Amy?  I know I'm not.  Bush tried to do something about it, it may have not been what you wanted, but what ideas do the Democrats have to save it?  The answer is none.

A few attorney's were fired in a political move, which is the administrations right to do (see Clinton years for details).  At least no one got burned alive in an attack on a compound.

Amy, you appear to be as supportive of the Democrats as they come.  The real tip off is your reference to Fox News, like they have anything to do with any of this stuff.  The next tip off is that you clearly do not hold Democrats responsible for any of their short comings, rather, you perform a lot of hand waving and excuse making for them.

> but clearly whoever is the next President will not be half as incompetent as this one.

An interesting statement.  Previously there was a presidency that had a many, many struggles, but through it all, they pointed to the economy.  "It's the Economy Stupid" was the mantra.  No matter what that administration's shortcomings were, they always pointed to the economy.  As long as the economy was okay, everything else didn't matter.  The economy is every bit as good now as it was then, under very much more difficult circumstances today.  Yet, there is never an acknowledgement of the fact by people on the Left.  It's not clear why that is.  If previous administrations can take as much credit for a good economy, then Bush should too.
"If previous administrations can take as much credit for a good economy, then Bush should too."

If  Republican Party policies are so good for the economy, then why is Warren Buffett raising money for the Democratic Party?

Why does Buffett note that his secretary pays a higher tax rate than he does? The wealthiest Americans are the ones who have benefitted from whatever econmic gains we have made. Statistics show that the median household income has risen a tiny amount, while the median individual income level has dropped...in other words, more people are working second jobs and more homemakers are entering the work force...everybody working harder to stay about where they were...doesn't sound like happy days are here again to me, unless you are at the investor end of a capitalist society. Apparently, even the investor class doesn't think a record income gap between the super wealthy and the rest of us is ultimately a good thing for the economy.

Meanwhile, we have spent billions of dollars we don't have on the war in Iraq, and now I hear the whistleblowers who at least tried to stem the fraudulent expenses have actually been punished. I have never heard of such corruption in the federal government in my life time.

And don't try to tell me Bush had a "right" to fire those eight Attorneys. I saw Iglesias and McKay on TV and they were top drawer people. I saw that with my own eyes, they were head and shoulders above Gonzales in demeanor. These were Republican Attorneys he fired, for crying out loud, the old fashioned kind, ethical and competent, its just they would not prosecute Democrats without evidence of wrong doing. You know, they respected the law.

My parents were Republicans, by the way, and the first candidate for President I ever voted for Gerald Ford. I am a Democrat who has voted for Olympia Snowe in the past, but not after Bush took us down the path we're on and every Republican fell into line. I can't believe there are  people like you who continue to make excuses fo Bush and spin, spin, spin the Republican line...I think you should spend some time as the opposition party, hopefully in as small a number as possible, and Fox News can cheer you up like Jon Stewart has entertained me. Thank God for Jon Stewart. These have been very dark days.

>>> If  Republican Party policies are so good for the economy, then why is Warren Buffett raising money for the Democratic Party?

I don't know Amy - go ask him.  For heavens sakes, is Warren Buffett the be all and end all judge of the American economy?

>> And don't try to tell me Bush had a "right" to fire those eight Attorneys. I saw Iglesias and McKay on TV and they were top drawer people.  <<

Sure.  And the 80-90 attorneys Clinton fired were all slugs.  Of course.

Other items:

Olympia Snow and Susan Collins are RINOs - Republicans In Name Only.

Nobody is making excuses for Bush.  He's done some not so good things, but he also has done many good things.  To not give him credit where credit is due shows your bias.

You seem to have this weird fascination with Fox News.  If you don't like it, don't watch it.

>> Jon Stewart has entertained me. Thank God for Jon Stewart. <<

Okay, time to end the conversation.  You seem to view this more as entertainment and sport then serious business.
"Sure.  And the 80-90 attorneys Clinton fired were all slugs.  Of course."

US Attorneys are not supposed to be the enforcement arm of the ruling political party. Clinton replaced almost all the Attorneys at the beginning of his term, as was his right. Bush fired eight high performing Attorneys in the middle of his term solely because they were not cooperating with the Republican agenda of harassing Democrats before the election. This action goes against the spirit of the American Justice system. I'm sorry you don't see that. I don't know how to explain how important it is that people believe US Attorneys are non-political and objective. Maybe you could read a book about the Russian Gulags.

"Olympia Snow and Susan Collins are RINOs - Republicans In Name Only."

Funny, cause Collins and Snowe signed a letter to the Portland paper urging people to vote for Bush right before the '04 election. Our Senators are cautious, careful, pragmatic public servants. They have what used to be considered "conservative" qualities, but suddenly their Yankee ethic makes them all but Democratic politicians. Interesting.

"I don't know Amy - go ask him.  For heavens sakes, is Warren Buffett the be all and end all judge of the American economy? "

Warren Buffett is the richest person in America and he earned his wealth through investing. To me, that means he must know something about the American economy. I thought Republicans were all about markets and "whats good for business is good for America," and such?

"You seem to view this more as entertainment and sport then serious business. "

You could not be more wrong.
