Obama pitches plan, ignores McCain

Posted: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 3:52 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
RENO, Nev. -- In a sweeping speech in battleground state Nevada, Obama made a direct appeal to the American people and to members of Congress to support the $700 billion rescue plan that failed to pass in the House of Representatives yesterday.

It was the first time since the need for such a rescue became clear that the Democratic nominee explained in direct and explicit terms what a total collapse of the credit markets would mean for ordinary people, many of whom are fiercely opposed to the bailout bill.

Quoting Franklin D. Roosevelt, Obama called on Americans to show the “confidence and courage” that he said were essential to the success of the plan. He asked people to believe in the country even if they are angry or anxious about the current crisis. And he tied the rescue plan to his own agenda, spelling out his plans to cut taxes, make health care and college more affordable and promote clean energy, including clean coal.

With an eye to casting the bailout deal as a time for patriotic action to save the American economy, Obama did not once mention John McCain. He said that now was not a time for politics or for taking credit or laying blame, and he compared the situation to putting out a fire in a neighbor’s house so that it would not spread to others. “We’ve got to make sure that we put the fire out and then go start making sure that these folks stop leaving the stove on,” he said. “But right now our job is to put out the fire and we can’t forget that.”

Obama said this was no longer just a Wall Street crisis, but an American crisis and that failure to pass a rescue plan could mean thousands of businesses could close around the country, millions of jobs could be lost and a long and painful recession could follow.

”Because of the housing crisis -- and nobody’s been hit harder by foreclosures in the housing crisis than Nevada -- we are now in a very dangerous situation where financial institutions across this country are afraid to lend money,” he told the crowd gathered on a lawn at the University of Nevada at Reno. “If all that meant was the failure of a few big banks on Wall Street, that’d be one thing.  But that’s not what it means.  What it means is that if we do not act, it will be harder for you to get a mortgage for your home or the loans you need to go to college or the loan you need to buy a car to get to work.  What it means is that businesses won’t be able to get loans they need to open new factories, or hire more workers, or make payroll for the workers they have.”

Obama has shown a new energy over the past two days when it comes to speaking about the financial crisis on the stump. Throughout his roughly 35-minute speech today, he used analogies and humor to try to explain the predicament facing the American economy and how it related to them. He told college students that even though they may not have big stock market portfolios, failure to stop this credit crisis would make it harder for them to get a job, buy a house and raise a family.

The senator promised to do all he could to help get a plan passed, saying he had spoken with Bush and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid about the deal today and urging Congress to "do what’s right for this country."  He also pointed out the proposal he put forward today to try to improve the bill, expanding the FDIC insurance for bank accounts to $250,000, from the current $100,000, something he said would help small businesses make payroll.

When asked why it had taken the Democratic nominee so long to spell out the problem facing the credit markets in clear, relatable terms to voters, a spokesperson said that throughout the week, Obama had sought to take a responsible approach to the crisis and that he could not speak about the consequences of not passing a bill when a deal on the bill had not yet been reached.

“What was clear from yesterday was that people are nervous, people are concerned about what this would mean,” said spokesperson Jen Psaki. “Why he’s talking about the implications of this not passing is that he wants to convey to the American people that this is something that we need to pass.”

How thoughtful and intelligent Obama is; unlike dumb, hot-headed, lying McCain!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, McCain, don't point the finger at Obama you an un-convicted criminal (Keating 5) crook; and lying about deregulaton. Therefore, you have no solution.

McCain saying that..... I'm committed to doing whatever is necessary in a bipartisan fashion, and there'll be plenty of time to point the finger of blame."
That's another LIE: background posted on FR...

Obama called you first asking for bi-partisanship. Yet, you, McCain, suspended your campaign and flew to Washington; and sat there silently. Therefore, you have no solution. Neither did you not say anything; other than  politicizing; wanting to appear a leader.

Your politicizing and name-calling has come back to bite your tough old arse.
McCain with his 83 lobbyist and Palin’s oil will be more of the same.
Enough
No McCain/ Palin
Nobody, but Obama/Biden

===================================
Andrea Mitchell, why must you continuously say white America doesn’t with Obama? Could it be you, Andrea Mitchell, who is not connecting?
LEADERSHIP: Taking a position without blaming anyone.  Explaining your position through analogies, parables, and humor. Showing a friendly smile, Showing you are working for the people.  That's Barack Obama and he will become the next POTUS.

As he works hard to help us. We are working hard to help him in INDIANA.  Indiana will be blue on November 4th and all the lying ads in McCains world cannot change that. Obama supporters are registering new voters, knocking on doors, making phone to friends, holding debate parties, writing letters to the editors, being community organizers.  Yes we can.
[Obama called on Americans to show the “confidence and courage” that he said were essential to the success of the plan. ]

What a minute. Isn't this the same thing Bush said about Iraq? This Obama character - he's more like Bush then McCain is.
Thats my president!
I am more impressed with Obama every day.  He has always had my vote, but my confidence in him to lead this nation with Joe Biden is growing exponentially. How could you possibly choose the alternative. Just more of the same...and possibly worse.
I really don't like the fact that he is calling for a backing of the original plan, which clearly was not fully supported by anyone - especially not Main St. people who are watching the markets crumble.
I would like to see him call for a redraw of a new plan of action - find a way to take into consideration the advice of experts in the financial sector who are not tied to Washington and a particular political party.
Obama: Prudence, Calm Consideration, a steady hand.
Why should I vote for the McCain circus?
This is another fine example of what real leadership looks like!!!  Wake up America! Enough with the partisan bickering, backbiting and ignorance about what this crisis really means to our country.  Enough with the individual biases, racism & ignorance.  It is time our nation comes together to conquer our problems and we need the right leader, Barack Obama!
That, my friends, is Country First. It will be so nice to have a president that I can trust and respect!
Judgment, intelligence, presidental - First class all the way!!

== The senator {Oblabbermouth] promised to do all he could to help get a plan passed, ==

Doubtful. That would require that he actually do something. The next thing this knucklehead accomplishes will be the first thing he accomplishes.

Thank you Barack Obama for your intelligence and clear thinking that you always display.

You should stay on track and stay on the trail to explain the Wall street recovery act and how it applies to us Americans
Pelosi torpedoed the vote for Obama. Now he can clean it up and save our butts. Everything McCain tried to do by flapping his flippers Obama is going to do by informing the people just what is at stake here and look very Presidential doing it.
This sort of statement is what American voters are looking for.  Not rush-rush-rush, we have a plan/we don't have a plan... be afraid, be very afraid...

American voters need a strong, credible statement from our leadership about why the rescue package is important, what effect it will have on our lives, and how, specifically, it will stabilize the economy.  I am happy to see the mention of "making payroll" in the speech, because it is precisely this type of issue that will hit home with average Americans.  What will we do if the paycheck doesn't come?  In non-panic-mode language, the discussion of "making payroll" brings the issue a whole different level of relevance to the average American.

Clear, cogent, responsible, non-partisan; sounds like a President to me!
This is just what is needed most.  Someone who can explain the effects of the bailout (or lack thereof) to regular Americans in clear language.  Gobama!
LOL Right Obama had a clue what was going on , he just was waiting so that he wouldn't disrupt the process. HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY ELECT SOMEONE THIS INEPT? WHAT A JOKE THIS GUY IS!
Obama has got to be the smartest man alive these days. Only a fool shows his hand prematruely and that is exactly what McFossil has done time and time again with his hot headedness. The whole time he has had a plan and his wisdom and courage to take charge after Bush members of congress an McStain have failed miserably at rallying their own respective parties shows he is ready

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
I saw the speech on the web as he was giving it
and Senator Obama did a great job explaining
the crisis that would prevail if this "Rescue
Plan" was not passed.  Finally someone made it
clear so that an old Grandma like myself could
understand it and understand the urgency.
Thank you Senator Obama you got my vote today.
It's about time one of our leaders decided to spell out the consequences Main Street Americans will suffer if bailout/rescue plan is not passed.  The average American is against the bailout because they do not fully understand that failure to pass a bailout plan will make a bad situation worse -- quickly.

It's good to see Obama taking the lead on having a candid discussion with the American people.  I very much prefer Obama's approach over fear-mongering without specifics (Bush) or grand-standing (McCain).
Finally, someone who has laid out the repercussions of not passing the bill in simple terms.  Obama is proving once again that he is presidential and deliberative.  He will not jump into saying something without thinking about it (unlike his opponent).

I will make a bet that the McCain campaign will pick up on some of the lines listed above and make it their own again.  They have exhibited no originality in the past several weeks.  Frankly, its very disappointing.
Now this is "Leadership!"

Obama/Biden/08
I'm not an economist so bear with me on this.

Doesn't the fed lend to banks at 2% or something lke that?

Stop lending to banks, lend the money to all those people who are struggling with their mortgages.  Lend at 4% even, government gets a better return.  But only if these people use the money to pay off the mortgages they already have.

So the banks do get the capital they are crying for and also get all that crap off their balance sheets.  To teach them their lesson, don't pay them off at 100% - let them take a 20% discount.  There is not a lender in this country who would not jump for joy at this point for 80% of what they have loaned.

Now Uncle Sam is the lender - sit down with the borrower and figure out what he can pay and keep him in the house.  Be creative - use big ballons at the end of the loan if necessary.  No one holds their mortgage till maturity.  Keep them in their houses long enough for the housing market to start picking up.  They will then be able to sell and pay off the government in full.

And the housing market should recover.  Foreclosures stop, and banks take all that money they got from the government to pay off the crap mortgages and start making new loans.

Housing crisis over in 5 to 10 years.
I just love Obama...I love where he wants to take this country. I love that he respects our intelligence and our concerns. I am not an ardent supporter of this plan, and I hate the administration and practices that brought us to this point, but I am coming to understand more and more why it needs to be done...thanks in large part to the calm, common sense explanations that Obama has provided (unlike McCain's bluster and folly).

Obama will work to make sure regular folks are protected & paid back in the long run.

Can't wait to start calling him Mr. President!
Obama's "judgement" needs to be recognized. He was right about Iraq, right about Washington (e.g., divisive) and is probably right about the bailout/rescue plan. As he said, "get it done."
Now that sounds like a President.
Now THIS is leadership, pure and simple.
I "bet" ya that McCain, wagers that he is going to lose. And he's right, for once !
++++ When asked why it had taken the Democratic nominee so long to spell out the problem facing the credit markets in clear, relatable terms to voters, a spokesperson said that throughout the week . . .

What liberals misinterpret as Obama be deep in thought about a problem is actually Obama not having a clue what to do. It takes time for his 300 advisors to come up with a plan for Obama to read, and that's always the reason for the delay.
I would like to see Senator Obama support the new plan that is being presented by a group of progressive Democrats at a press conference right now. Why would he (or anyone) continue to support the ill-conceived and hastily-considered plan put forth by the same Administration that rushed through the Patriot Act and rushed into war with Iraq? Let's address the root causes of the crisis instead of throwing money at the same people who are responsible for the mess we are in. And why is MSNBC not covering this press conference? Oh, that's right, it's more important to focus on the politics, including which side is more to blame.
Thank you, (soon-to-be) Mr. President, for providing a cogent explanation of a complicated topic, and for doing it in a way that is calming and reassuring. We've missed that ability over the last 8 years.
Yes, Obama!  I applaud you for trying to stay out of it and letting congress handle it.  But I now applaud you for spelling out why we must go along with extremely difficult thing. Your calmness is what our country needs.  Hopefully both parties can work together to get this mess cleared up but also INCLUDE THE MAIN STREET FOLKS' INTERESTS.  YES, SOME MAIN STREET FOLKS MAY HAVE ADDED POORLY WITH THEIR FINANCES - BUT LET'S NOT CUT OFF OUR HEAD TO SPITE OUR NOSE.  $700B is a crazy amount of money but if main street folks are bailed out as well, I can complain.
I remeber vividly my grandfather many times talking about how Franklin Roosevelt through his discussing the problem and encouraging the people brought back the will and determination of the Ameican people whose spirits were deep down, the ones whose lives were the most harmed by the great depression. Direct, truthful, empathetic and reasoned logic are what we need now. I firmly believe that Barrack Obama is the one who can lead us through the difficult time.
this is what America needs a real Leader...Obama/Biden
It seems as though that, in this country, we have been fortunate to have true leaders emerge at times of great crisis. People can argue about political views and approaches to governing, but McCain is not even in the same league as Obama in terms of true leadership ability.

Obama motivates people to work together to be better than we can be individually, while McCain promotes divisiveness and rancor. On this  leadership test alone, the best choice for the country is clear.
Finally a grown up in all this mess!  Now, can we bring our troops home because America, we are broke!  It is GREAT to help others but dang who is going to help us?  China won't even give us credit! Congress - get your act together!
I am starting to like the new plan the democrats created to save the economy. I agree that we should not buy the tainted assests. We should re-negotiate people's mortages. Pass the economic stimulus plan, raise the fdic from $100,000 to $250 thousand dollars, and use the tools the fed has to save the markets without using tax payers money. I like the idea of a task force so people responsible for the economic crisis will face criminal charges. This is a good plan. Unfortunately, the republicans don't appear to be on board. The republicans have been trying to stop the economic stimulus plan. This plan is for the people so I hope the republicans do the right thing.
He should ignore McCain. McCain has made himself irrelevant with his reckless jumping from one position to another for the last 2 weeks.
Clearly, the plan of action was not articulated to the American people.  Both Barack Obama and John McCain should have been doing this weeks ago, rather than careful watching (Obama) or knocking Congress around (McCain).  They have the bully pulpit to make the sale to the American people and give us a sense why this is necessary.  And it has a bonus of making them appear like they actually care/know what's going on.
McCain take note - this is leadership.
What a bold step. A practical definition of maverick by actions.  He doesn't call himself one, but is the only one who behaves like one. A true leader who puts country first.
President Bush... you owe Obama one!
Wow... This guy is beginning to convince me on this.

Finally, I get a straight answer.

- Red From Utah
Everyone give back your Stimulus checks Curious George Bush gave you this summer. They should have just kept the money. If I were borrowing money from one of these institutions we're bailing out, I would be charged interest on the money. How about we increase their taxes and lower our taxes. That way we see the return on our money and the extra money we keep from our paycheck will be spent on things we want to "bail out". Like some Manolo Blahnik shoes, and thus putting money back into the economy. Problem solved.
I thought obamas explanation was clear, concise and understandable to the average person,  He coveyed the message that this is not a wall street problem and even if you have no investments in wall street it will directly impact the main street person as well.

He used examples to enlighten the concepts that were easily understood.

His calm, clear decisive approach without panicking the average person shows that he has the ability to lead this nation, particualarly in times of crisis.

McCain used the sonic restaurant and onions as an approach but that is a major restaurant chain not small main street basis, not sure people got it.

Plus he has just done one to many flip flops for me and his character does not speak of confidence reagrding dealing with crisis.

Suz, western, ny
Good job Obama. Perhaps the uninformed will understand that they stand to loose more by failing to pass the plan than they could ever recover. Most of you have never seen the results of a depression. Look back and it will scare the heck out of you. Don't allow fast talking, loud talking, duma--s talk radio and media pundits lead you around by the nose. It is easy to be angry but like Obama says fix it first then go after those responsible. By the way we are all somewhat responsible because we allowed deregulation and cast a blind eye to those who were picking our pockets. We said we won't get involved because we have no influence. Welcome to reality. Vote.
Obama thinks there's a crisis? The only crisis I see is that the Wall Street types won't be getting their six figure bonus checks this year. Too bad. Maybe they'll get the Jelly of the Month Gift Certificate instead. The crisis is that many banks that played outside the rules are going under. Again, too bad, not my problem. We had too many banks anyway. Sure, getting credit will be tight for a month or two, but again, too bad. We'll just have to wait a little bit before we buy that car, go on that trip, or get that flat screen tv. No instant gratification for us for a while I guess. Too bad.
This is who I want for a leader!  Obama is the perfect combination of calm demeanor and intelligent solutions in a crisis!
That is leadership with a capital L.  Isn't it ironic that the crowd whos deregulation got us in this mess doesn't have the backbone to man up and get us out of it.  Go Obama.
Naturally, now that the cat is out of the bag, that the dems caused this mess, he is trying to slide another past the American people. Now the koolaid drinkers will jump off a cliff if he tells them to, but the repubs are more cautious. They want to see what we Wide eyed americans are going to have to pay for first.
Typical Obama, pander and lie. Say what your people want to hear and deliver on your best.... NOTHING !
Oh my bad and higher taxes to pay for all the crap he is hawking at the circus.
