The loyalty question

Posted: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 4:09 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Carrie Dann and Jeff Hanley
With many of the players still pointing fingers over which party lacked discipline in whipping up support for the bailout yesterday, yet another look back at the roll call vote offers a few numbers to keep in mind.

Of the 47 House Dems who endorsed Obama BEFORE Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, 26 voted in favor of the bailout legislation. That leaves 21 -- almost half of the original Obama loyalists -- who voted against the bill he supported.

Two powerful House caucuses were also split. The Congressional Black Caucus voted 18 Yea votes to 21 Nays. The Hispanic Caucus also voted down the bailout, with eight members voting  in favor and 12 voting against the bailout.

But is any of this a measure of the loyalty Barack Obama commands? Or was it the threat of a tough re-election race that was ultimately the best predictor of support or opposition to the bill?

Of 38 incumbents in House races rated by the Cook Political Report as competitive or Toss Ups, 30 voted against the bailout. That's all but five of 17 Dems in tough reelection races, and all but three of 21 Republican incumbents running for another term. And, as First Read noted this morning, most retiring members not running for office -- 19 out of 24 -- voted in favor of the recovery bill.

The Democrats did their part trying to pass this bail out yesterday. It was the GOP who failed on their end. Clyburn talked about it this morning. Now with the new bail out to be re-written, the Democratic Black Caucus should get what they want. They deserve it.

Go Barney Frank.
What exactly does this have to do with anything??What a waste of time. Please just report real news.
Could someone please tell me if we are in such dire need to pass this bailout bill, why did the stock market go up today?  People need to keep the pressure on congress and so called leaders to vote this bill down, or risk losing YOUR job.
Hanley is a caribbean name..Could there possibly be a relation here?I am from the caribbean....
1) In my mind, Congress should not be the President's party.  There is a reason for checks and balances--how quickly we forget our lesson.

2) I'm wondering how this bailout deal is affecting John McCain's support among his base, who ardently oppose such action as spending tax dollars for a bailout.  Is the economic issue helping Obama, or is it more hurting McCain with his base?  I hope Chuck Todd looks at this in a poll.
If Washington wants the money so bad, how about putting up some collateral? I always been partial to the Jefferson Memorial, it will be nice piece of property to own. Maybe I'll make it into condos.
With false assertions, Bush long ago lost any credibility in making the case for any need to take drastic action.

McCain demonstrated his credibility in dealing with economic problems when he claimed to suspend his election campaign until he secured the resolution of the current crisis he helped create. Why is he now campaigning?
So much for Democratic leadership.  If Obama cant lead his own party and won't reach across the aisle to Republicans to get things done he isn't fit to be President. He makes good speachs in general terms that say nothing. We need better.
Obama loyalist?

lol

Because you endorse a guy in the primaries, that makes you a "loyalist"?

If we have learned nothing else this week, it is this - each person in Congress does what is in THEIR best interest first, and everything else comes next.

You act like Senator Obama can just wave his fingers and make these people obey - last time I checked - a significant percent of the Democratic Party is STILL trying to undermine Senator Obama - just like you are with this "article".
That because those other 21 have not explained to their constituencies the plan. Those politicans instead of trying to understand themselves the plan; are answering to their constituencies; it seems are only concerned about their seats!

Wong of Might and Thunder,

Community organizer = person who pressures banks stop offering predatory loans.
If you’re referring to minorities, you might want to include yourself. A greedy capitalistic is a deadbeat predator threaten the survival of the species.

Enough
No way
No how
No McCain/ Palin
Nobody, but Obama/Biden

Alrighty then...  Let's put it this way...

60% of Obama's DEM's voted yes
33% of McCain's REP's voted yes

Could this be the tale of the General Election?
Going against conventional wisdom, the Democrats are in fact not that stupid. Many of the Democrats that won House seats in the last election did so by being against the war (don't hear much about that anymore, now do you?), and by being fiscal conservatives. Those Democrats know that voting for this pig of a bill gets them a first class ticket back home and a brand new Republican seating in their seat in the House.
See both sides just trying get re elected to office. But this concerns me a little that the Obama worshipers in congress didn't do as he said to. Will he cast them to hell for disobeying ? Or are they waking up and realizing their dis-loyalty to Hillary and their constiguents by supporting obama in the first place. Sound like obama needs to get Howard Dean to twist their arms again and get them back in line.
