First thoughts: The witching hour

*** Approaching the witching hour: We now have a good idea of where the two campaigns will spend their last four days until Election Day. Today, Obama campaigns in Iowa and Indiana, and in between the events he heads home to Chicago to spend part of Halloween with his daughters. On Saturday, he travels to Nevada (Henderson), Colorado (Pueblo), and Missouri (Springfield). On Sunday, it’s an entire day in Ohio (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati). And on Monday, per the New York Times, Obama hits Florida (Jacksonville), North Carolina, and Virginia (Manassas). As for McCain, he spends his entire Friday in Ohio; campaigns in Virginia and Pennsylvania on Saturday; then he’s reportedly hitting New Hampshire; and on Monday, he’s supposed to barnstorm through six states (including western ones like Nevada), with a final stop in -- get this -- Arizona.

Video: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on what the presidential candidates will be doing in their last few days of campaigning — and why.

*** Is McCain Michael Myers or Jason -- you just can’t get rid of him? We’ve heard plenty of rhetoric that McCain is closing in on Obama’s poll lead. But is that really happening? One poll definitely moved: In Fox’s survey, Obama’s lead is now just three points, down from nine last week (yet some have noted that the poll’s weighting was changed). But other polls show a pretty static race. Gallup’s registered-voter model has Obama up eight points, after it was nine the day before; the Washington Post/ABC tracking poll is unchanged, 52%-44%; and Hotline/Diageo has the race at 48%-42%, down one point from the day before. Oh, and then there is the brand-new New York Times/CBS poll, which has Obama ahead by 11 points, 51%-40%, essentially unchanged from its last poll that showed Obama with a 13-point lead. The good news for both campaigns: There are enough state polls out there -- including some by some questionable pollsters -- with enough diverse results that both campaigns can latch on to something that makes them feel better.

*** Burying the competition: Was the Obama infomercial worth the millions the campaign spent on it? It looks like it. Almost 34 million people watched the 30-minute advertisement. In fact, as the Times reported, that total easily surpassed the audience for the final game of the World Series and last season’s finale of American Idol. Also, the networks that ran the advertisement beat the one that didn’t. Nearly 10 million people tuned into NBC to watch the ad; 8.6 million saw it on CBS; 7.1 million watched it on FOX; and the rest watched the infomercial on cable. By comparison, 6.2 million tuned into ABC’s “Pushing Daisies.” Poor "Pushing Daisies"; it's actually not a bad show, but it's one of those shows that would be more successful on HBO or Showtime. (We know, save the TV criticism for Shales, sorry Tom; but he does occasionally jump into politics, so fair play, right?).

*** Gore!!! The Terminator!!! Today, Al and Tipper Gore campaign for Obama in Florida on their single favorite day of the year Halloween (their VP Naval Observatory parties were legendary; Al has Frankenstein, the only guy who can go as Frankenstein and seem less stiff, bada bing!). The Gores will be stopping in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger -- remember him? -- finally campaigns for McCain today in Columbus, OH. It was approximately four years to the day that he stumped for Bush in Ohio.

*** Scary Movie (for Republicans): We believe we called it, but Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker (R) is now using a TV ad Hillary Clinton cut for Al Franken -- in which she argued that a Franken win would help Dems achieve a filibuster-proof majority -- against his Democratic opponent, Ronnie Musgrove. A new Wicker ad concludes, “Send a failed ex-governor to support Hillary’s liberal agenda? Or a conservative with integrity and Mississippi values?” The clip Wicker uses is one of Clinton arguing for a filibuster-proof Senate; no mention of Franken, it's all about making Clinton the boogey-woman on this Halloween day.

*** Exorcist III: The Defamation Lawsuit: In North Carolina, Kay Hagan (D) is now suing Elizabeth Dole (R) for defamation after the North Carolina senator ran a TV ad suggesting that Hagan said the words, “There is no God.” Just when the Minnesota Senate race looked like it couldn't be topped for having the most twists and turns at the end, here comes North Carolina. By the way, there’s some strange final-hours lawsuit news floating around that could stop Norm Coleman's momentum in this final weekend.

*** Obama's radio advantage is spooky: One of the under-written process stories of the cycle is Obama's dominance on the radio airwaves. You looking for a good explanation for why Obama is doing well in states with heavy driving populations (like Florida and Montana, for instance?), go to the radio dial, where he's outspending McCain by huge margins. It's taken Democrats YEARS to realize that radio is not a wasted media effort. Bush dominated Kerry on radio in '04 and well…

*** Fun (or scary) fact of the day: The last time a Democrat won the White House without winning Tennessee was in 1960. And that just happens to be the last time the state was wrong in picking the president. In fact, Tennessee has proven to be a pretty reliable bellwether in the past 100 years -- choosing the eventual winner all but twice since 1912. But Tennessee is even more important to the Republican ticket. No Republican has won the White House without Tennessee since 1924.

*** On the trail: McCain spends a second day on his bus tour through Ohio, hitting Hanoverton, Steubenville, New Philadelphia, and Columbus. Obama holds a rally in Des Moines, IA, heads to Chicago to spend part of Halloween with his daughters, and holds an evening rally in Gary, IN. Biden begins his day with a rally in Delaware (remember he’s also running for Senate re-election there), and then travels to Ohio for events in Kettering and Lima. And Palin campaigns in Pennsylvania, visiting Latrobe and York.

Countdown to Election Day 2008: 4 days
Countdown to Electoral Vote Count: 69 days

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

Do you think Palin will fade away quickly after next Tuesday?

What will McCain do for the remainder of his Senate term; whimper or fight?

Would Hillary have been in the same position to win as Barack is now, considering the economy?  Is she in line to be named Secretary of State?  Considering Joe Biden is no spring chicken anymore, would Barack ask her to be his VP candidate in 2012?  I could foresee a progression from Secretary of State to VP.

Hasn’t this been the most exhilarating political season ever?  I thank all of the regulars here in First Read for sharpening my debate points.  My first ever presidential vote cast was in 72, and this by far is the most important election in my life.  Nothing comes close to this year.
Hopefully the Gidget and Geezer show will be over soon, I'm tired of the reruns day in and day out.

Take a look at the Republican Legacy. The oil profits from ONE company posted recently, almost 15 Billion profits for one quarter people, not a year!

I forgot the trickle down, like we'll ever see any of this, maybe "Joe the Oilman" will. The madness has to stop. The republicans don't deserve any more chances.

We need Obama and we need him now! Tell the lame duck to start packing.
Only 4 days left. I think America is on pins and needles here. We are on the cusp of history. We can decide on Tuesday to make a bold statement to the world that we believe in change and prosperity. We will no longer let the rest of the world pass us by.

We will be the change we have waited for!

Feel free to comment:

McCain lost this race a long time ago. Tightening or not, 4 days to go isn't enough to change the narrative. Sarah Palin is the future of the GOP.

Imagine.

Imagine an America where our young men and women are not returning home in caskets because of unnecessary war that feeds a presidential ego.

Imagine an America more safe because American respect for international law leads to global  consensus to deny safe haven for those with a compulsive disdain for America and her leadership.

Imagine an America where laborers return home from a good day’s work with confidence that their labor has been sufficient to meet their family’s financial requirements.

Imagine an America where education opportunities are limited only by a student’s ability, interest and imagination.

Imagine an America where medical care is based on medical need and not the scheming of those with only greed and no regard for human health and human life.

Imagine a President Obama.

Imagine.
Too bad I will not be able to make the NYC Halloween Parade tonight in the West Village...there will be so many drag queen Sarah Palins, ya betcha!
SEN. COLEMAN:  SLEEZY SCUZBAG

That's because they oversampled Republicans - take a look at the internals. Fox is in fantasy land right now.

ANOTHER McCAIN SUPPORTER THINK PALIN IS A JOKE!!!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/31/eagleburger-blisters-pali_n_139524.html

Former Secretary of State and prominent McCain supporter, Lawrence Eagleburger, was asked if he thought Palin could step in during a time of crisis, and he said: "Look, of course not." And just a couple of days ago, we had McCain's OWN advisers saying Palin is totally unqualified and ignorant of the issues! Now, former Sec of State Eagleburger confesses the same thing. Now, a new poll finds that voters increasingly feel the same way...

----

GROWING DOUBTS ON PALIN TAKE A TOLL, POLL FINDS

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/31/us/politics/31poll.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin

A new poll finds that 59% of people think Palin is unqualified!!! That is HUGE, because it means that a significant number of Republicans also agree that she's not prepared for the job. It seems the more Palin speaks, the more she reveals her incredible ignorance of important issues.
Everyone should read Rehema Ellis' piece "DON'T WEAR CAMPAIGN BUTTONS TO THE POLLS ---MAKING YOUR VOTE COUNT"

There's alot of shenanigans going on out there ----so don't advertise who you are voting for.

All of us have the right to vote, but we MUST PROTECT the young voters, the minority voters, the elderly voters against those who would try to suppress their vote.

If possible, drive someone to the polls and stay with them!  Make sure no one hassles them or tries to intimidate them.  Fight back!   Let's not let anyone steal this election.......NOT THIS TIME!

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Happy Halloween First Read crew who have done such a great job for so long posting great articles and to all the Obama supporters who have posted such great comments!  The last day of a very Happy Barack-tober as we are only 3 days from Judgment Day!

I am so happy that Obama has owned the month of Barack-tober and has managed toi avoid any nasty surprises.  Nothing is going to save McNasty and his Wicked Witch from going down to defeat and a big defeat!  I will be so glad not to see either on tv again spewing their hateful lies.

Let's have Robin Hood government where we take back from the rich and greedy and give back to the poor and needy.  That's wealth redistribution we can believe in!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
[Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger -- remember him?]

Yeah, he's the guy that has talent when compared to Obama, Gore, Clinton, etc.
Happy Holloween to all of you!

As for the polls, the minute I saw the Foxnews poll, I knew something was wrong...good ole Foxnews, Obama's opponet is McCain/Palin and Foxnews...

It is nice to see the Obama is going to spend sometime with his kids today...I am sorry that he won't be on SNL - I was really hoping HE was the one to do it - not McCain.  I am not interested in seeing McCain on that show!  But Obama will be too far out west to appear. Too bad - it would have been great!
Repubs should be scared, and ashamed, contrite,
and should apologize for their divisive campaign and eight years of lazy leadership.
You have ruined a economy, misled our nation time and time again, you have weakened our military and put children at risk with a fake ideology that porvs that you are only interested in helping those who need no help, the monied interests.
Hide your head in shame!
Everyday will be Halloween in an Obama administration.
FR: "Today, Obama campaigns in Iowa and Indiana."

That's the telling line from the piece. Obama is spending the day in two smaller states; one where his lead seems insurmountable at this point, and the other where it would be a nice to have, but probably a bridge too far.

This day could turn into the storyline. If Obama wins, it could be a day people turn to in making the case it was never close down the stretch. If somehow McCain pulls off the come from behind, this could be the day people point to as an anecdote for how Obama lost it.
He's not appearing in Gary, IN.  His IN rally will be at Wicker Memorial Park in Highland, IN.  Gates open at 6 p.m. for a rally which starts at 7:30 p.m.  Got your facts wrong, Chuck.
I am so looking forward to Tuesday night watching the election returns.  I am going to enjoy every second of McNasty's concession speech.  I am going to enjoy not seeing that Wicked Witch from Alaska on tv as she goes back to the big deep freeze in the Northwest where she belongs.

I bet that she gets rebuffed at that meeting of loser repugnant ones 2 days after the election, the repugnant ones will be blaming her for their big loss.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Poll the other presidential candidates and the undecided will opt for one of them, not to McCain.

Huffington Post:

"Asked about it in Politico, retiring Fox News anchor Brit Hume took great pride, boasting, "We had a great run on ACORN."

Hume's self-satisfying view really does capture the FNC ethos. Because in truth, Fox News never advanced the ACORN story one inch. It never broke any news. It never contributing anything journalistically to the story. Meaning, news organizations never (I don't think) had to cite Fox News for anything regarding its ACORN coverage. And its reporting certainly had no impact on the overall campaign.

Fox News couldn't stop talking about ACORN, and yet Fox News never managed to uncovering anything newsworthy about ACORN. It just rehashed and speculated, rehashed and speculated.

Still, Hume boasts FNC had a "great run" on the story. Why, because it filled up endless hours of Fox News programming? Is that how Hume determines a Fox News success?"
**********************
This pretty much sums up what success means to Fox Propaganda. There is no point in trying to look for a shred of integrity with these people. There is none. There never was.

Roger Ailes & Rupert Murdock, I hope you’re real proud of the product and message you sold to the American people.  You’re the laughingstock of the country. Good. It’s well deserved.

Just so you know, we the American people are going to continue to do our part to see to it that you continue on your ratings decline. We have MSNBC, which is where you’ll find Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, David Shuster, Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Richard Wolffe, Lawrence O'Donnell, Howard Fineman, Jonathan Alter, et al. The real professionals. And it shows. They all did a tremendous job this year. Everyone I have spoken with are so proud to see how far MSNBC has come in just one year. It’s like a dream come true for us, the viewers. Other than the election, MSNBC’s rise is the biggest story of the year in our opinion. And we’re going to see to it that their success continues. And continue to call you people out on your stupidity and lies. Of that you can be sure.

2008  in the end will have turned out to be a very good year for each and every American who cares deeply about our country AND our reputation around the globe.

The biggest losers: Fox Propaganda & Rush Limbaugh & Karl Rove & Tom Delay & Newt Gingrich & Ann Coulter & Sean Hannity & Bill O’Reilly & Laura Ingraham & Michelle Malkin & Mary Matalin & Fred Barnes & Bill Kristol & Chas. Krauthammer & Madam Palin as well as every single ridiculous right winger you see on Fox Propaganda and hear on right wing talk radio.

And for this, we will all have something to celebrate on New Years Eve. Finally.

Cheers everyone.

Vote.

"In fact, Tennessee has proven to be a pretty reliable bellwether in the past 100 years -- choosing the eventual winner all but twice since 1912. "

Interesting  . . .

So does that mean you are predicting that Senator Obama is going to win Tennessee? AWESOME!

Q: How can you tell an Alaskan Governor from a community organizer?

A1: The clothing budget!

or

A2: One rides the bus, and the other throws her running mate under the bus!

Happy Halloween to my fellow political junkies! :)
Most of us in Tennessee are all "bushed" out, just hope everyone goes to the polls and provides mccain with the shock of his life.  I'm ready for my home state to turn back to its original blue.  for those who are not familiar with Tennessee history, the most hated governor/politian in Tennesse History is Gov. William Brownlow, a republican during reconstruction (and it had little to do with the civil war or the outcome - it had to do with his irrisponsible fisical  policies), 2nd moste hated a democrat, Ray Blanton, 3rd most hated, a republican, Don Sundquist.  So two out of three of our most hated were republicans.  Don't know why they color us red, we should be blue - but then again money talks and the gop is only about the money.
<<"Is McCain Michael Myers or Jason -- you just can’t get rid of him?">>

You're kidding, right?  You're comparing two unstoppable killing machines with a guy who's asleep a half-hour after the early-bird dinner special?
Obama is worst for America: Everyone should read Rehema Ellis' piece "DON'T WEAR CAMPAIGN BUTTONS TO THE POLLS ---MAKING YOUR VOTE COUNT"

This is why Democrats are failures are leadership. Everything is conspiracy to them. They're the most paranoid bunch I've ever seen.
I love the spooky theme!

And to Chuck, thanks for sharpening us this season. I love reading and watching your stuff!

As a Minnesotan,I've last-minute changed my costume for tonight to a Witch Hunter--Michele Bachmann. BOO!

How can a VP disappear after next Tuesday ? As President McCain will fight for the US.

There would be no race if Hillary had ran against McCain, She would have won by a landslide. Unfortunatly we'll NEVER have that privilige now. She said she will only serve in the Senate from now on.
Thats why this Hillary dem is backing McCain !
Even our Tinseltown Flake governor is not going to save worthless McNasty's behind this election.  He screwed up our state bigtime with his clueless economic stewardship.

It is going to be so gratifying to see Mainstream America excorcise the evil repugnant ones from our government where they have haunted our once great secular democracy the past 8 years.  I look forward to a wonderful Election Day treat as Obama wins while the repugnant ones get tricks played on them as we the people kick their cans out of office!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Where are all the paid republican flamers?  I almost (but don't quite) MISS them.
It's time to go,a few come to mind.Micheal Bachman comes to mind, she is a poster child for" Nuts are us"And then we have Lizzy Dole another fine piece of work,I'm glad Hagen has filed suit againest her,she deserves it.These snakes are some of the lowest form of humans, and to think they have something to offer!Ya Hate thats about it.
Though it may not be ain't over until it's over, let's face facts -- it's over.
Thanks to you and your band of fellow ghouls, Chucky, for making a memorable and informative site. The way to know you've suceeded is that at various times you have upset BOTH Dems and Repubs!
mccain is coming back to Pa again?  he & palin are leaving so much stink here we will have to fumigate the entire state. pennsylvania hates mccain, I wish he would stay AWAY.
I just think it's sweet that he's going home to spend time with his kids in Chicago for Halloween.  What a great father he is, what great kids they are, what a great family. Kudos!

We're informed voters and
we approve this answer....

CHuck NY:  I have enjoyed your sudden and second thoughts throughout the campaign.

I don't see the polls moving much and if they are steady through tomorrow, the margin is too large for McCain to make up any difference.  I assume a majority of the undecideds will sway to McCain, but who knows.

I've been a fan of Charlie Cook for some time. He does not put himself in a position of saying "I'm sorry, I misspoke."  There is some comfort when he calls the election for Obama.

I'll be making comments on Monday, but Tuesday I will be GOTV for Obama in Indiana.  Damn, it will be close here! The Obama ground organization has been fantastic. I've met a lot of very nice organizers in the Obama campaign.  The GOP are still running ads in Indiana, but everyone is desensitized to both McCain and Obama ads.  The only undecided voters I've talked to are Republicans who normally would vote for John, but do not believe Sarah is qualified and are conflicted.  It's not about Obama, it's about Sarah.
Senator Obama is  HALF WHITE.....

Senator Obama's blood is  RED.....

Senator Obama's heart is of  GOLD.....

Senator Obama is all-AmericaN --  RED, WHITE, & BLUE...

I don't care what color our next President is....we need a qualified, intelligent, mature leader and that is Senator Obama.

59% now believe Sarah Palin is not qualified to be VP, no less President.    Now isn't that enough to convince all of you undecideds??

VOTE SMART.....OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Yes History is about to be made. After tuesday will America still be a great nation or will be a memory ?
If you loe America and for what she stands then for McCain
Or vote in a Anti American, whose terrorist buddies are just waiting to destroy this country

After November 4th. McCain and Palin? Quote the raven: Nevermore.

Obama/Biden '08
FR: "The Defamation Lawsuit: In North Carolina, Kay Hagan (D) is now suing Elizabeth Dole (R) for defamation after the North Carolina senator ran a TV ad suggesting that Hagan said the words, 'There is no God.'"

Elizabeth Dole has just surpassed every example I can think of, so now in my mind holds the title for sleeziest campaign move of all time.

She should be sued, should lose, should be required to publicly apologize, and perhaps should be forced to pay a hefty amount of cash. If she wins the election, and I was on that jury, I'd suggest an amount equal to six times a U.S. senator's annual salary, plus an amount equal to Hagan's remaining years of life expectancy times a U.S. senator's pension.

These candidates won't stop the shameless lies until there is a real cost associated with them.
Gore is the perfect reminder why people should be engaged more than ever.

Wow, instead of Halloween, feels like we are having some April Fools moments.

McCain and Palin running this country...that's scary within itself; it's a joke gone really bad this election!
Thank you for your reporting on Liddy Dole's shameful advertising in the North Carolina senatorial campaign All Americans should know about this dishonorabe campaign. Liddy has reached a new low and deserves a permanent place in the Hall of Shame. Hopefully she will not have a place in the US Senate
I also think that MS needs looking at.  I can't imagine them electing McCain over Obama.  Can hardly wait for Tuesday night.

As for the GOP, yes they have been hijacked by the extreme right.  Of whom are very narrow minded in their beliefs.  This country needs all of us and our beliefs.
As this election season moves towards its hopefully inevitable end, the thing I keep thinking about most of all is this:

I miss Tim Russert terribly. But I think he would be supremely proud of his team in his absence, and I know he would have enjoyed the spirit in this post...
I doubt the polls are closing too much, probably just the media (and by media I'm mean everyone, not just certain networks) trying to spice up the election more to get more people to watch their networks and read their blogs and newspapers.

While the media probably doesn't want a fiasco like Florida eight years ago they probably hope on having people watch their Election Night coverage for several hours to increase ratings, and having the race called at 9:00 or so won't help them. The media just likes the drama because it attracts people to watch them, a blowout is just plain boring.

While McCain may be closing in some polls and may pull off a win in one or two battlegrounds it won't be enough to pull the upset off.
Imagine McCain as president, with democrats in control of the house and senate.  You think the government is dysfuntional now?
Halloween Surprise! Yesterday an African American community leader stated that Obama is not BLACK. He is half white and has NO Slave Blood in him. So if people think getting him elected will end the black oppression struggle and conversations, they are sadly mistaken. White people who think electing Barack will end this once and for all are sadly mistaken. So if you think you are voting to ease your guilt, think again. This really struck me as odd. Who are the real racists in America? Why are people pointing at the Republicans, the party that abolished slavery? If the feeling is Obama is not really black, why the belief that they would support him? Because of the color of his skin. People are so lost in that. John Kerry, Al Gore, John Dean, Barney Frank are all viewed by conservatives the same as Obama. Not by skin color, which obviously has no part to play in this election. Can’t the name calling stop? Why would there be a race riot if Obama does not win, if leaders feel his not black? Sadly, FR filled with HATERS.
Imagine.

Imagine an America where our young men and women are not returning home in caskets because of unnecessary war that feeds a presidential ego. ...............

Imagine where the young men and women won't be returning home cause their being killed here, by terrorist
----------------------------------------------------
Imagine an America more safe because American respect for international law leads to global  consensus to deny safe haven for those with a compulsive disdain for America and her leadership. ...............

Imagine a America on her knees because a President wants to be popular and the world to like him

--------------------------------------------------
Imagine an America where laborers return home from a good day’s work with confidence that their labor has been sufficient to meet their family’s financial requirements. .......................

Imagine the illegals coming home from taking another Americans job, and watch as more jobs are sent overseas
-------------------------------------------------
Imagine an America where education opportunities are limited only by a student’s ability, interest and imagination. ..........................

There for this one because that is where we are now !!!!!
---------------------------------------------------
Imagine an America where medical care is based on medical need and not the scheming of those with only greed and no regard for human health and human life.

Imagine the socialist coutry this will be, where the hard work of the middle class goes to support those who refuse to work, those that are here illegally.
Imagine a President Obama.
Thats the thing with Democrats, they love this stuff, it's part of their very being. For Republicans, it really doesn't matter one way or another. Washington DC doesn't run the country, no matter who is there. Big business runs the country. Always has, always will. Sure the Democrats have their little show trials like the oil execs being called to testify to why all of them raised their prices at the same time (funny how they are not called when they all reduce their prices at the same time). The lame minded liberals think this stuff is important. But all it is is the Democrats putting on a show for the masses. Then they go back to their offices and cash the check from the Big Businesses, and then go golfing in St. Thomas.
