Obama returns to IA, where it all began

Posted: Friday, October 31, 2008 5:37 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The end is the beginning.

With just four days to go until America elects the next president, Obama returned to the state that launched his once unlikely bid for the White House.

In his speech here, he also hailed the John McCain of the 2000 elections and suggested his rival had modified his principles to try to win this time around.

Several polls show the Democratic nominee with a double-digit lead over McCain in the Hawkeye State, where his big win in the January caucus helped set him on the course to win the nomination. His last visit to this city was May 20. Today, as he did then, Obama thanked his supporters -- saying he would “always be grateful” to the people of Iowa -- and told them they started a movement that has changed the political landscape.

“We began in the depths of winter nearly two years ago, on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. Our first stop was Cedar Rapids, then we came to Des Moines and then we went to Waterloo. It was cold at every stop. It was 7, 8 degrees then,” he said as the crowd basked in the sun of a 70-degree day here."

He went on to say that while at the beginning, he had faced a steep climb to win the nomination, he believed that the people of America and the people of Iowa were ready for something new.

“On the day of the Iowa caucus, my faith in the American people was vindicated and what you started here in Iowa has swept the nation,” he said. “We’re seeing the same turnout. We’re are seeing the same people going and getting line, volunteers, people participating, a whole new way of doing democracy  started right here in Iowa and it is all across the country now.”

Obama’s success in winning in this nearly all-white state helped him begin to solidify his support among many black voters, who had previously though he had no chance of winning the nation’s highest office because of his race.

The McCain campaign took issue with Obama’s use of the word “vindicated.”

“Hardworking families need a president whose faith in the American people is not predicated on his own election,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds in an email. “At a time of mounting economic and foreign policy challenges, this country needs a president like John McCain who is experienced and tested -- and has proven his selfless faith in the American people.”

Criticizing McCain
The speech before a crowd of about 25,000 at a park downtown was largely a repeat of the closing argument Obama has been giving across the battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, and Florida this week. But it included a tough criticism of McCain, casting him as a man who has changed since his first run for the White House.

“A couple of elections ago, there was a presidential candidate who decried this kind of politics and condemned these kind of tactics, and I admired him for it. He said, “I will not take the low road to the highest office in the land.” Obama began. “Those words were spoken eight years ago by my opponent, John McCain. But the high road didn’t lead him to the White House then, so this time, he decided to take a different route.”

The Illinois senator, who was headed home to Chicago to spend part of Halloween with this daughters before heading to a rally in Indiana, predicted more “slash and burn” attacks from this opponent in the final days and said McCain had called him every name in the book, “everything but a child of God” because he was short on ideas.

As he has done all week and throughout his campaign, Obama talked about the need to get past the ideological debates that divide people -- this time using the idea that ideas are not Republican or Democrat -- to respond to a new McCain ad that uses Obama’s own words.

“Just this morning, the McCain campaign put out an interesting ad. They put out an ad that showed me praising John McCain and Sen. Lieberman for their work on global warming -- as if there’s something wrong with acknowledging when an opponent’s said or done something that makes sense,” he said incredulously. “I mean, I don’t know exactly what they were thinking, but I do that all the time. I’m happy to give -- on torture, I think, John McCain has done the right thing. I think we need more of that attitude in Washington. We need more civility in Washington.”

Yea, while all eyes are looking north perhaps it will be the south that comes to rise again.

Go Obama and team!
Obama is the only candidate to take us into the 21st century. McSame will leave us back in the 20th century.
2 votes in my house for Obama/Biden 2008
Iowa is where Obama officially launched his campaign. And, after the primaries were over, Iowa was the first place he visited.  Obama will win Iowa.
Yet, Rick Davis thinks they're close so McCain will send money and resources there.  Another example of a poorly run campaign by Team McCain.  Thanks.

Here's to President-elect Obama, 102 hours from now.
And might I humbly add, THANK GOD!!!!
Like he has on so many other issues, the McCain of the 2008 campaign sold out the position he had previously taken on torture. As one who was tortured himself, he once opposed Bush on his torture and waterboading policies which violated international law, disgraced America in the eyes of the world, and put American troops in danger. Then in his craven attempt to win the Presidency, McCain reversed himself and supported Bush in allowing the CIA to torture and waterboard prisoners.
McShame
Obama: "I’m happy to give -- on torture, I think, John McCain has done the right thing."
---------------------------------------------

Obama's wrong. McCain flip-flopped on torture, and voted to permit the CIA to use the water-board torture. But McCain has done so many flip-flops, I guess you have to forgive Obama for missing one.
Yes! We need more civility in Washington, and in all of our country.  Obama is best positioned to help bring about a tone of respect and unity.

I voted for Obama on the first day of early voting here in Texas. Couldn't wait! Now I can't wait until election day is over! Go vote folks!

It's so nice as a Father to be able to see our Children who will be Voting for the First time have a Person like Mr Obama to vote for. Only in America, it bring tear to a Father eyes.
This is not where it began for B. Hussuien Obama. It started long ago with people like Percy Sutton, Bill Ayers, PLO propogandists. Where the hell is all his money coming from. I do not know one person who gave him a nickel. Why can't we get any straight answers. Prediction: Impeachment within 18 months if he is elected.
I was there and the history was palpable. All 25,000 knew that they were witnessing something that they'll be talking about for years.

It's quite a change from a year ago when you could talk one-to-one with Obama.

Change is good.
Obama is a trancendential figure in American Politics and is charting a bi-partisan course that reflects the reality of the electorate and the desire to bring all of us together to change the direction the country is going. This is our best opportunity to reject the lies and mud-slinging that typify the McCain campaign. They appeal to our worst instincts, while Obama appeals to our humanity and compassion.
Obama is right. McCain of 2000 is not the McCain of 2008. McCain has run the most despicable and lying campaign. McCain has not offered any plan for the economy. He wants to continue the same policies that has led us to this economic mess. McCain has not advocated for any policies to help the middle class in his 26 years as a senator. Don't expect him to do anything to help the middle class in the next 4 years. McCain's claim that providing tax cuts for the middle class is socialism, but tax cuts to the rich is not coporate welfare. please. nov. 4th can't come soon enough.
Go, Obama:

Never forget your roots, or the roots of your successful campaign.  Show the love to Iowa and then get back to Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania any one of those puts you over the top!

I can't wait to cast my vote on Tuesday!  I have been anxious that something will happen to me before than, that's how enmeshed I am.

Fellow bloggers, http://www.newsweek.com/id/166535
I will miss you guys.  Even some that I don't agree with.  Richard from Washington, where have you gone?  You at least articulated your thoughts in a 'less radical' way.
I think that we need more civilty too. So, in this spirit I'd like to reach out to McCain/Palin supporters.
I'm here to offer my support for you in your internal struggle with hatred and bigotry. I've already begun to set up reading workshops and for the hardcore Palin supporters, I'm offering a three day basic hygiene seminar.
No way is McCain going to win Iowa.  We helped start the wave of support for Obama, and we're going to help him win on Tuesday.  I was there to see Obama three times before the Iowa caucus, help him win my precinct, and now my children support him too - one is old enough to vote; the other is 16 but has canvassed with me twice and is volunteering to GOTV this weekend in Des Moines.

They rural people are going to vote for McCain.  This makes no sense at all.  McCain has voted against each of the last three farm bills, and said he would end all farm subsidies.  Now those issues don't affect me much because I'm not a farmer, but why would you vote for anyone who doesn't support your very livelihood?
Keep in mind that the same McCain spinsters that said the Iowa race is a "dead heat" are also the ones that released a report clearing Palin of any ethics violations in Troopergate...

IMO, I think they are trying to generate excitement for McCain followers so they vote on Tuesday.  Reeks of desperation.

Still, it's not over 'til it's over - make sure you vote!!

Obama/Biden '08 & '12

There is a poll out of Louisiana that has that state virtually tied.  I don't think it will flip, but the McCain campaign is truly and honestly sunk.  They can't even win decisively in deep red states.  The GOP's memorial service will be held 11/5/08, Bring your own bottle.
Glad to see Obama point out the flip side of the latest McCain ad in which Obama praises McCain and Lieberman for their efforts. Truly, another prime example of, "There are none so blind as those who will not see." McCain/Palin, and their supporters, are so engrossed in misrepresenting facts about Obama via such claims as, "Raising taxes on those who earn less than $42K per year", "Voting to raise taxes 94 times", etc, etc, and putting words in Obama's mouth that he never, spoke, are unable to even discern the difference from honorable praise and political endorsement...or more likely, they just don't care as apparently the end justifies any means. The indisputable fact that the Right and Evangelicals tenaciously cling to furthering proven lies, even thanking "Joe the Plumber" for what "He's done for America", (which would be, WHAT exactly?) even though he personally would benefit significantly by the Obama tax plan, truly beggars the imagination. Maybe it's time for more aggressive regulation of lies in political campaigns from ALL sides...why is it okay/legal to lie about oponents in such a critical area of democracy...very, very sad. For those of you who are contributing to this abomination, this would be a good time to truly have and demonstrate the courage of the convictions you claim to have...
his money came from people like me giving $25.00 whenever they can.  Senator Obama has quite a following because of his upbeat personality and sticking with the issues while McShame and Pain have tried to destroy Senator Obama, the man.  They should be so ashamed of themselves and anyone else who agrees with their methods.  McCain and Palin are not "Country First", Obama is Country First.  He cares about the entire Country whereas McCain and Palin only care about the areas that they think are pro america, while thinking that I am Anti America.  Palin go home to Alaska where you can steal more money from your taxpayers.  McCain go back to the senate and try for another Keating 5.  VOTE FOR OBAMA / BIDEn
Most of the stories we see these days discuss Obama's strength in Southern States with large African-American populations.  As far as I'm concerned, what is much more inspiring is Obama's strength in northern New England - Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine - where there is no sizable African-American population, yet Sen. Obama is out-polling John McCain by ten to fifteen percent.

God Bless America!

Obama/Biden
No, it didn't begin in Iowa. It began in Bill Ayers' living room in Chicago, just 2 blocks from where Obama lived.
Mr.John Brown I am one of over 100 that Iknow that has sent 25.00 or more a month to Mr. Obama. So you must not know many people? i send 25.00 every time palin from Alaska. Bad mouths OUR NEXT PRESIDENT. Mr Obama. And we are all over 62 and getting happer every day.
hey John Brown in Lantana, Fl. I'm one who donated. Live in Osceola County Fl.  I'm just an average retired banker and Veteran............

John Brown: This year, I have donated $170 to Barack Obama. It is the first time in my 33 years as a voter that I have donated to a presidential candidate. Just because you don't know anyone who has donated, doesn't mean there are not many other people out there like me, who have been so moved by this man that we are willing to give up some of our income in these tough times, to ensure that he is elected. I am proud to have voted early for Obama, and I resent the questions from you and others about all of these "small donations" that he has received.

====================================================
John, you've gotten straight answers.  Obama has addressed every one of McCain's attempts to smear him.  You just don't want to believe those answers, yet nobody has come up with anything to indicate Obama's not telling you the truth.  Why?  Because he IS telling you the truth.  Get over your kool-aid induced fear, set aside your biases for a minute and think about how difficult it would be with today's media to have the most unsavory associations and make it this far.  Maybe what you need to do is forget that Obama is a Democrat, or that he is half black.  what would you think of his words, his policies, his plans, if you didn't know what party or color he is?  I dare say you would think he is a pretty impressive guy.
I'd like to hear on what grounds you think Obama will be impeached.  Lying to us to get us into a war?  Obliterating habeas corpus?  Giving ridiculous no-bid contracts to the company his VP used to run? Selectively firing judges?  Outing a CIA operative because her husband disagreed with him?  Oh, wait - those have already been done and nobody got impeached.  Guess those things are okay.  I certainly don't see Obama doing any worse.
What is one more lie from the Mccain camp and the
republicans?? That is all they do well.
Iowa and the majority of other states have intelligent
voters and realize we cannot survive one more year
of the unscrupulous republicans.
My favorite president until now was Theodore Roosevelt but I predict that Barack Obama will go down in history as our greatest president.  Have already voted for OBAMA.  Wish I could vote again.  By the way so did my old white Independent wife.  Also we take offense at the bloggers that suggest that all liberals don't have jobs and this is all they can do.

Mr Brown, you must be hiding under a rock then...because something like THREE MILLION people donated to Obama. THAT'S where he's getting his money!!
Iowa is to Barack as West Virginia was to Cowboy George. The difference is that Barack will be in Iowa's corner when it comes to Energy Independence. Bush could give a ratsa$$ about Coal.

David Axelrod & David Plouffe have run an Excellent campaign. Barack Obama has been wellserved by these two.Howard Dean 1st adopted the 50 State strategy & Barack has taken it deeper into GOP territory than anyone could've imagined.
For all those Democrats(not on record) who suggested that Barack was'nt being tuff enough, were lulled to sleep by an Outdated campaign theory. Now that Barack has shown to be above Petty attacks, how will this work in future campaign's?
Barack Obama has been Attacked relentlessly & Not once has he attacked the Character of his Opponent, Not Once!Head held high, he has chosen a different way to get his Message across. The American electorate first of all gave Barack the financial support to run the campaign for American's. By advertising & campaigning in Unchartered territory by a Democrat, this is Barack's way of getting back at those who have tried & failed to Damage his Character.
Joe Biden may have said it best "He has a Spine of Steel".The only show of comtempt was the brush of the shoulder back in the Primaries.Barack has taken the fight to the GOP in ways that have overwhelmed them by fighting on Their turf.
That is the Ultimate revenge for the relentless Attacks on his Character !

Delusional Thinking By Commonsense Americans Is Over !
Again Obama takes the high road and does not take the low road.  Yet, Johnny boy took the frigid, icy cold, road of—surprised, bigoted, robo-calls and hate-filled ad mailers to the highest office in this land.
That's not the change most America’s want or believe in. It's a perverted, deviated, different route.
At least Obama was honest when said.... “the next president faces stiff challenges and not all campaign pledges would be easily met. I won’t stand here and pretend that any of this will be easy – especially now”. McCain will never that as long he attacks Obama with his sleaze.

While the trip to Obama’s Iowa carried a warm valedictory feeling, McCain’s valedictory feeling will be very cold on the way to an Arizona Nursing home.

I find it heart warming, that in this busy time Obama took time to see his daughters for Halloween.  That speaks volumes to me about what kind of human being he is.......

I VOTED FOR OBAMA

VOTE EARLY IF YOU CAN OR ON NOV 4TH
@John Brown Lantana, Fl

I am a 54 yr. old grandmother of 5 who HAS given nearly $700 to Obama since last January in donations of $5, $10, $25.... for a while, I was trying to give $5 per every "my friends" John McCain said in debates, but thank goodness he slowed down on using that!

So, it is people like ME who donate to Obama because -- unlike you -- I've educated myself on the TRUTH about Obama and his ideas, career, motivations and beliefs... rather than let pathetic old men who do not care one whit about ME try to TELL me about their opponent.

John McCain is a liar. Wake up. He's an angry, argumentative, negative bitter old man. He says he's served his country, but starting in Annapolis, he has a career of underwhelming mediocrity and lack of effort.

he's personally crashed more military hardware than SOME of America's enemies.

He's not been tested... He's JUST OLD. Old DOES NOT = tested. It = OLD.

Obviously John, you're not hanging out with the right people!  But I'd be glad to sit down and have a beer or a coffee with you and talk about the great future I see with Barack Obama.  That is if you don't mind sitting down with an old white woman/grandmother who runs her own business and can't wait to vote for Obama/Biden!
John Brown Latana. Everyone in my neighborhood has given money to Obama. It's come from good old fashioned Patriots for Obama!!!
John Brown for Indiana...
You don't know anyone who has given him a nickle? Well you know one now. I have given every month. And just I sense some doubt in your support of Obama, it does not surprise me to know that you couldnt find one person. Why do you insist on bringing up old stuff? I mean, cant we move past the name-calling, and get down to the issues? This is the issue with some of the republicans (notice I said SOME). As soon as things arent going your way the mud starts slinging. McCain and his campaign are looking at everything and anything to get folks not to vote for Obama. They like to bring up his past, who he served on committees with, who was a terrorist when Obama was 8 years old.. Lets be adults. Its about the issues, and I am so delighted to know that folks are beginning to wake up and do what is best for them and their country. Obama is the next President of the US. Get over it.

Nice, John.  I'm not surprised you don't know anyone who hasn't donated.  The people that donate to Obama's campaign have more sense than to associate with "stubborn" types.  I'm a student working for my second degree and most of my friends have no money, but what little we have we give to the cause we believe in.  It's refreshing to see so many average people backing a candidate, rather than to see the rich republicans controlling the election again.
Remember when all people could talk about how Sarah Palin who preaches "abstinence" had a pregnant teenage daughter? It was tabloid news, it was the stuff that late night comedians loved!

When they asked Obama he COULD HAVE either kept the fire going or he could have said "no comment" BUT HE WAS GRACIOUS....and said "my mother had me at 18 she was a teenage mother!"

That comment killed the fascination with this story and let the girl who did not practice abstinence stop being the butt of jokes!! Obama was GRACIOUS when he did not need to be! Palin has NOT been gracious at all towards him!
McCain lost ALL his credibilty after he picked Palin as a running mate. Why are we even discussing this any more?
Nov 4th can't get here fast enough.
President Obama will bring us to the 21st century; he will open new opportunities that McCain/Palin would not have thought about. You see, Obama has vision. McCain is stuck into the past; no disrespect, he is an honorable man.  During the last 21 months, we have seen Obama manages the best campaign ever and stays always on message never wavers. He is cool and collected.  He shows confidence in his decisions which could be perceive as arrogance.  He is wise and very compassionate.  He is not afraid to engage his opponent.  He agrees to disagree. He has a depth of knowledge. He makes well thought out arguments most of all he listens. These are the characters that we need in a President.  Vote Obama.
There are about 35 members of my immediate family and 34 for of us are voting for Barack Obama.  We feel that John McCain sold his country out by picking Palin.  All that patriotism flushed down the toilet.  Oh well, you reap what you sow.
