McCain in a different kind of rivalry

Posted: Friday, October 31, 2008 6:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH -- This afternoon, McCain may have slightly irked some Ohio voters who are fans of the Mighty Tornadoes in strongly Republican Tuscawaras County.

Appearing in the shadow of Woody Hayes Field, the GOP nominee stepped into the middle of a local high school football rivalry between the New Philadelphia Quakers and the Dover Mighty Tornadoes, wishing the Quakers "good luck" in their game against Dover tomorrow.

Earlier this month, McCain opted not to wade into a World Series match up between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays saying, "Now, I'm not dumb enough to get mixed up in a World Series between swing states." But apparently he had no qualms getting mixed up a bit in a game between Ohio's "twin cities."

While the Quaker fans in attendance loved McCain's support, they were slightly less happy about his confusion of their town with a big city by a similar name.

"I want to say to you I believe we have seen the kind of momentum and enthusiasm that is here in North Philadelphia today that I think is going to make," McCain said, using the wrong name for the second time at the top of his remarks. "In NEW Philadelphia. North Philadelphia's part of a big city. New Philadelphia is the heartland of America."

(Of course, McCain isn't the only one who has flubbed a city's name on the campaign trail. Obama has done it plenty of times.)

The New Philadelphia stop was McCain's eighth event in the midst of a two-day bus tour of this perennial bellwether state. Picking up on the Halloween theme, this morning McCain held a rally with Rudy Giuliani at United High School in Hanoverton, warning his audience about Democratic scare tactics.

"Here's what's going on. It's Halloween, so what do the Democrats do? Every four years, they run out and they try to scare seniors by saying that Republicans are going to take away their Social Security or we're going to take away Medicare," McCain said to a crowd of 4,700 -- more than 1,500 of which were students and staff of the Hanoverton and surrounding school districts. "They do it every four years. And, my friends, our Americans have wised up. I'm going to protect Social Security. I'm going to protect Medicare and I'm not going to let this congress tax away your retirement savings."

Then during a stop in Steubenville, Ohio's town square McCain encountered some holiday-themed signs picking on his campaign's use of Joe the Plumber.

"Could you raise the signs again?," McCain said. "Doug the undertaker. A few Democrats may need to see you Doug after this election is over."

Does Sarah Palin deem her medical records unnecessary at this point?
Ahhh, another High School stadium for McCain... any eligible voters in the crowd???
Democratic scare tactics?

Bwahahaha

Oh man that's rich
McCain of 2000 is not the same McCain has 2008. He has run a bad campaign full of lies. He caved to the right wing of the republican party. It shows with his pick of Palin. I believe the Palin pick is cynical. McCain believes that if people will vote for Obama who has no experience, then people will accept Palin. Obama has knowledge and judgement on the issues which is more important than the number of years spent in the senate. Palin has no knowledge and judgement of the issues. Combine this with the lack of experience and abuse of power, she becomes a scary pick.
That's bold talk for a guy who can't speak without drooling.
Is that when Biden couldn't say the name McCain. "McLLAAAANE, uh, er, McLLAAAANE." It was like an attack that lasted 15 seconds. Either he forgot to take his sanity pills or the Lord was given him a warning he ignored.
Have you seen the ad Obama has up in Arizona?  Very positive.  Mentions endorsements by Colin Powell and Warren Buffet which addresses the foreign policy and economic credentials.

Not to mention the the McCain ad where he has a clip of Obama complimenting McCain and Lieberman.  Duh... That's the point, John.  Its about changing the tone in Washington D.C. and turning our backs on the sad cynical deceptive politics of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove that you have so eagerly adopted as a part of your campaign.
Really?  This is news?  Really?

Why don't you report on McCain's seedy connections, like you like to on Obama's
Did he ask them (the crowd) to vote for Obama?

So I guess North Philadelphia (as in Philadelphia, PA) isn't REAL America.  Sorry, we're only THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE COUNTRY.  The place where the signed a couple of documents 200 years ago called the Declaration of Indepencence and the US Constitution.  You know, those documents that the Republican party has been using for the past 8 years to wipe its collective ass.

Obama/Biden '08!

How pathetic that for the last two days now (and probably many more) McCain has had to have students bussed in to beef up attendance at his rallies.  Hey John, didn't anyone tell you those kids aren't old enough to vote yet?  Maybe someone needs to tell Rick Davis that; I doubt he knows.  Tucker?  Oh, no he wouldn't know either.  Carly?  Oops - she's long gone.  Joe would know; where's Joe?  Joe, where are ya?  I was told Joe was coming.  Oh he's not?  Sarah, we're stuck - fire up the school kids with some fancy pageant walking, will ya!?
"You betcha!"
Just heard Arnold the weight builder make fun of Obamas according to him "tiny legs" in Ohio. This is one of the reasons McCain is losing this election.
For your information governor of California not every one likes the steriod body most weight builders carry around. There are more serious issues facing the nation, body building is the least of these. Grow up.
Don't forget Sarah, the fascist witch of the North.
He probably thought they were really AlQueda in baseball uniforms who flew in from Cuba in hot air baloons to drop Anti-Semitic meatloaf recipes on his rally. Come on Americans....this guy needs to hang it up and get Alzheimers meds.
What scary is we have Rudy and John at the helm-YIKES!

GO OBAMA-GO VOTE FOR YOU VOICE, EMPOWERMENT AND CHANGE!
I think McCain may be confused on Doug the Undertaker.  From my read, it's the Republicans who will be looking for his help after Nov. 4.
What are the Obama supporters going to do when the election is over since all they do is sit around all day and post comments on this site?

I guess they will have to get a life.
I just sent a contribution to Kay Hagan to help her bury Lizard Dole.  Bigots need to be knocked down hard.
How about McCain the "NON PRESIDENT"!!!!!!!
McCain and Palin have given us no details as to how they are going to put this country back on the right track. All I hear is country first, and Barack knows this person and Barack that... This is getting so tired, and for all of you morons that vote for McCain/Palin, I hope you've enjoyed the last 6 years, because we're going to get more of the same if they win; in competency, stay the course even though I'm going the wrong way, Brownie you're sure doing a heck of a job, birthday cake on the strip (BushMcCain) while a natural disaster is occurring, a VP that doesn't know their role Palin is just like Cheney in that way, rich get richer, poor get homeless, penniless, no healthcare, no jobs (they all go overseas, rising food costs, a bad education system, and maybe even another war.)

Get the booze ready...please and I don’t drink, bring me some tissue, cause here comes more sh!t rolling down hill if McCain/Palin win.
