The most liberal/conservative is...

From NBC's Mark Murray
National Journal has released its congressional vote ratings for 2008. A year ago, the magazine ranked Barack Obama as the Senate's most liberal member, which became a chief talking point for the McCain campaign and the GOP during the presidential election.

This year's most liberal senator is -- drum roll, please -- Patty Murray. The most conservative senator? A four-way tie: John Barrasso (WY), Mike Enzi (WY), John Ensign (NV), and Jon Kyl (AZ).

Hip Hip Hurray for Patty Murray being the most Liberal Democrat!  So funny how the 4 morons who are the most conservative are the most ignorant when they open their mouths.  Time to get rid of these extremist lamebrains who have wrecked our country.

Liberals Rule!
Michelle Bachman and al her looney-tunes ideas isn't one of the most conservative?!?
So, we need people on both sides to get all points of view expressed. Then govern from the middle. For someone who is supposed to be so liberal Obama sure has moved toward the center. If McCain had won he would have had to move toward the center too if he wanted to be successful. Unfortunately McCain was under the thumb of the ubercons and neocons and couldn't move toward the center and that is one reason he lost.

Neither Liberal nor Conservative is a dirty word although you would never know it by many of the posts on this blog. They are merely different viewpoints. When taken together and are balanced we have a true picture of what is happening and what should be done. When one side is far to radical than the other we are out of balance and that is not good.
OMG I just have to thank some of you posters on here for the comic relief that you are providing.

I mean for some of you to say that the economy is tanking because of Obama is just freaking hilarious.

And then there are those of you claiming that the stock market is crashing because of Obama.

And then some of you bash his agenda, yet offer up no solutions-just like the Republican leadership (or lack thereof)

I guess I must have been in some kind of stupor the last eight years, as I was under the impression that it was the REPUBLICAN PARTY that  had control and that the REPUBLICAN IDEAS for the last eight years are the reason that everything is going to hell.

I guess I am mistaken to think that President Obama is just trying to clean up the REPUBLICAN FAILURES of the last eight years.

Good thing I can come here and have some of you set me straight.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

Big surprise on the two wyoming senators, they have never strayed from the wyoming protocol dictated by the powers that rule the repugs in wyoming, never voted for either of them.

From Washingtonmonthly:

'THE PROBLEM WITH THE PORK PUSHBACK.... For GOP lawmakers anxious to push back against the Obama administration's agenda, the answer isn't to engage in a debate over the role of government. Rather, the Republicans have decided the way to win the broader policy debate is to find individual spending proposals that sound funny.

The strategy hasn't been especially effective. The money for marsh-mouse preservation turned out to be a lie. The money linking Vegas to Disneyland by way of high-speed rail was also non-existent. The volcano-monitoring program turned out to be a pretty good idea.

But now they've got a new one. Republicans, Fox News, the New York Post, and Drudge have found a $200,000 provision in the omnibus spending package for "tattoo removal." How can anyone defend that?

It's actually pretty easy to defend. Greg Sargent looked into it.

[A] little reporting reveals that that this "tattoo removal" program is an anti-crime program in the San Fernando Valley that re-integrates reformed gang members and makes it easier for them to find jobs. Two Los Angeles law enforcement officials I just spoke to -- one who identified himself as a "conservative Republican" -- swore by the program for reducing crime and saving lives.

The chief of San Fernando Police Department told Greg that the program is "important" and "reduces attacks." A local probation officer added, "This program is one of the best life-saving and life-changing programs out here. I am about as right wing a conservative as you would ever find."

In other words, it's another example of the sad spectacle of foolish Republican talking points.

Looking at the big picture, it's amazing the right would choose to be this foolish, on purpose. Conservative David Frum, a former Bush speechwriter, recently explained the seriousness and scope of the current crisis, and the fundamental shift the Obama administration is pursuing. He added that Republican obsession over trivial expenditures makes the party look ridiculous: "Could we possibly act more inadequate to the challenge? More futile? More brain dead?"

Apparently not...'

give conservatives enough rope ....

Go Barbara Boxer !!

You're #3 !!!

California's BEST Senator !!
MSNBC really loves playing up the differences in the country rather than focusing on what ties us together.  Thanks, that is just what we need at a time when our very survival is at risk.
Congratulations Patty!
None of this is nothing the Repubs didn't already know. You need better topics like "How Lomg Can Obama Hold Out?" and "Is Pelosi Pulling Obama's Strings?"

Get into the truth and meat of things.

To Rocky Mountain (also from another thread) ~ A big shout out to you, too, Rocky.  I was beginning to think it might not really be you.  So sad what happened to News Hole.  Posting here IS a little more iffy, but worth it, so keep trying.  Very glad to see you; hope that all is well.  My best to Mrs. Rocky.
So why did all of the Republican junk mail I've gotten over the past few years always say that Ted Kennedy was the most liberal -- and fat?
I seem to recall the NJ had a pretty weird definition of "liberal."  The vote that put Obama over the top last year was an initiative to open up the government and increase transparency...

you know, most of the time you make a few good points, but it is all lost because of the incessant namecalling that you adhere to.

now i can completely understand anger at the previous administration, but in all honesty both parties allowed our country to be brought down to what we are now facing.  The democrats are not knights in shining armor rescuing us from a dragon, they enabled the previous president in everything he did until 2007 when our entire government became locked in a standoff.

civility in the citizenry would go a long way towards showing our elected officials that we won't tolerate government standoffs based on ideological differences when the future of our country is at stake.

we all let anger cloud our judgment from time to time, but the continuity of namecalling and slander in your posts diminishes the good points you make, and doesn't help heal the rift between these ideological factions.

i could care less who the most liberal and most conservative senators and representatives are.  i care about which officials are getting things done to fix the problems the country is facing.
Patty Murray?  Okay, I had no faith in that silly poll before and now I KNOW it's junk.  Patty Murray is so middle-of-the-road that she barely fits with the Seattle-area of her constituency.  Oh, I'll still vote for her (and Cantwell) since the Republicans here are beyond disgusting, but she does nothing to thrill a Progressive's heart.
Bachman is a Representative, not a Senator.

But if this were a list ranking the dumbest elected officials, she'd surely get her day in the sun.

Is this the republicans sense of humor?
Nuanced:

Patty's training by Ted is now complete and he is passing the torch.  The invisible chain attached to the invisible ring in her nose will, however, be entrusted to Chuck Schumer to insure she doesn't get overconfident and think for herself.

Patty traded in her tennis shoes long ago and the State of Washington and its $6-8 billion budget deficit is now 100% the property of an unopposable Democrat majority, with non-male persons holding all three of the most powerful political positions.

Don't know what all that means, but there must be some nuance there somewhere.
Republicans are sick:

I see your point, that joke is a bit insensitive.  As far as I know, the alcoholic, formerly womanizing perpetrator of near-negligent homicide has not drooled in public and should not be targeted on that basis.

I do, however, nominate Eric Salacious as the torch bearer for democrat sense of humor.

Thanks, TZalaran, for once again speaking my mind (another excellent post).

I agree that Dems were not without fault for our current ills. Even though I blame George W. the most, Democrats had the majority for the last two years and did nothing with it. I never cease to be amazed to hear news about Congress holding hearings on steroids, or sports, or some other meaningless topic when we have real problems to deal with.

It appears to me that President Obama is on the right track, but his toughest challenge may be to hold Pelosi back. There are lots of worthy "causes" that may warrant consideration, but the economy MUST come first.

Show me a Republican Congressman or Senator who is willing to step up and propose a valid plan (or even a valid alternative to the Dem plan) instead of complaining and mouthing the same old Repub line, and I might even think of voting Republican again (last time I did, it was for Reagan).

I think every member of Congress should be required to sit down and watch "Dave" again before they start working on the budget. Let's get rid of the lobbyists and the special deals to make everyone richer and work like our lives depend on it - they do.

Let's make action the most important factor in Congressional elections - not money. If they don't do the job, take it away from them.
I understand how you can find tattoo removal a confusing use of money if your not from a urban area. If you think about it,those are the same regions that have alot of democrats and few republicans. Its understandable that they might not be aware of what its all about.
Gang members get these tattoos that mark them for life as a member of the gang. If you want to get these kids out of gangs and give them a chance at a normal life, the tattoos have to go. There are many cosmetic surgeons who volunteer their time to do this, but like all such things the problem is far bigger than the attempted solution.
Then again Republicans have a history of ridiculing and opposing programs that don't affect their regions. Think of air pollution. If you life in New York or California, which have huge urban populations, air pollution is a huge problem. There is no one who has driven into Los Angeles that has not noticed that visibility is a few blocks on some days due to the haze in the air,or anyone that has driven into Sacramento and not noticed the brown cloud of smog clearly visible hovering over the city. To people who have to live with it,its not a vague statement about the air being bad,its something you can see and even feel on a bad smog day. If you live in it,republican or democrat, you realize the need to fix it. The only reason one party over the other champions it,is because of the way the parties support plays out geographical.

Some of the attacks on "pork" however are just plain ignorant. Money to study the breeding habbits of lobsters? Sounds stupid, but if lobster fishing is a multimillion dollar business in your area, its rather useful. A million dollars for a "overhead" projector sounds ridiculous. Why not buy one from Staples? As it turns out,it was actually pretty close to a lie. The "overhead" projector was in fact a planetarium projector. Planetariums educate the local communities and get a lot of kids excited about science. A planetarium projector is very expensive, but lasts forever. Personally,I think its very important to educate our children, and even more important to get them interested in math and science,as that is the very basis of the only industries where America still can be competitive.
Lastly ,we have volcano monitoring. I don't even understand why this could be considered to sound like an absurd expenditure. Its like some politicians take pride in how ignorant they can show themselves to be. If you live near a volcano, you should like this. But really, how many volcanos ARE there in the US? Try this website http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/volcus/ustext.html. By my count we have Mauna Loa,Kilauea,Mount Baker,Mount Rainier,Mount St. Helens,Lassen Peak,Redoubt,Augustine,Novarupta,Trident,Mount Veniaminof,Mount Spur,Long Valley Caldera and Yellowstone Caldera. Thats 15. Explain how its not a good idea to keep an eye on them so that we can evacuate people if necessary.
Tzalaran,
I agree, the name calling needs to stop, I find it interesting tho, that now, republicans are calling for it, talk about hypocritical, first Obama was a domestic terrorist, then he wasn't, because he isn't a citizen, then he's a muslim, then he's not, then he's a drug user, then he's not, then, he's an elitist, but then he's not.  Look, you want the name calling to stop, those are things the republican LEADERSHIP not only condoned, but helped to think up.  They have come by their fate honestly.  Their credibility is shot, as it should be.  When you lie, and people figure it out..you deserve to be marginalized.  Thats exactly what is happening now, again, they are marginalizing themselves, because the only thing they can come up with is no tax and spend, and offer, with a straight face mind you, trickle down economics again.
As GWB so eloquently put it, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice..ya can't get fooled again.  I'm done with the republican party until they can prove to me, that they are more intrested in helping our country as opposed to hurting it, simply because they lust for the power.  Not to do anything constructive with that power..just to have the power.  Well, we are onto them now, and frankly, I'll be glad when they are replaced by an even more liberal party, the Green Party.
The party of Palin, by choosing her, and sticking with theologic policies as opposed to governing policies just marginalized them that much more.
I've got nothing against TRUE republicans or conservatives, but, those that try to ram their theologic agenda down our throats, and continue to support outdated and obviously failed policy simply because they are unwilling to open their eyes and see what those policies have wrought are not True Republicans..I know, because I am one.
We can't have enough liberals around to encourage "self-reliance" and "responsibility.Just like the Borg Queen in the White House says we have to do.
i could care less who the most liberal and most conservative senators and representatives are.  i care about which officials are getting things done to fix the problems the country is facing.

I wonder...rather than have a set salary for Congress and Senate members, what would happen if they were all put on commission.  Do you think any of them would have run for the job in the first place?  Maybe the time has come.  Now *that* would be change I would believe in!!!
Bohner is the most liberal Senator. He supports "Free-love" between Congressmen and Congressional Pages.
I have to go call my Senator and congratulate her on being the most liberal Senator in the Senate! That's great! Go Patty!
Barbara Boxer is the bomb!  What an outstanding Senator!
How can anyone say that BHO has moved to the center after this week? Freedman to NIC, massive expansion of taxes and spending, assault weapons ban? In 2010, the GOP will be back in the majority in the house.
Eagle1776,

You are joking, right?  Obama has moved to the center.  What planet do you live on?  He not only wants to re-make the healthcare industry (which Clinton did such a good job on), but he wants to re-make the energy industry as well.  That is not centrist under any reasonable definition of the word.
I think what I find most sad is how extreme one way or the other that so many in Congress are.  I consider myself a moderate and have found more Democrats to be moderates than Republicans.  When anyone hits 90points plus, they are not voting with their head, they are simply voting either Republican or Democrat.  And no party has all the answers!!

Grow up.  Use your brain and think for yourself.

I thought Brownback (KS Senator) was bad and a straight party voter and he's only at 76 points!!
i could care less who the most liberal and most conservative senators and representatives are.  i care about which officials are getting things done to fix the problems the country is facing.

Excellent point.  I wish our politicians would be so wise.  I found it utterly appalling that the GOP was proud of its 100% vote against the Stimulus Plan in the House and all but 3 negative votes in the Senate.  If I truly believed that's how they felt, it would be fine, but instead it was so along party lines that I am furious with the party.  I was actually glad to see some Democrats in the House vote against it.  I'm glad the plan passed as I believe we have got to do something to stop this downward spiral, but I'm glad the representatives were at least thinking for themselves.
Feinstein the DINO more liberal than Feingold? On what planet?
No name calling, just fact:  MSNBC is pathetic.
Our senators and representatives got another pay raise the first of January.  While more and more of their constituents are losing their job much less getting a raise, they keep taking care of themselves.

I think we need to start a grassroots campaign to get them to reduce their salaries.  If the Republicans are so about pork and the Democrats care so much, let's see them take a pay CUT!
