Santorum, CPAC's Elvis

From NBC's Abby Livingston
WASHINGTON -- During the CPAC convention, it takes about 30 seconds for a reporter walking in off the streets here to realize he or she is not in hyper-Democratic D.C. anymore.

It is at CPAC where defiant newspaper stands carry "The Washingtom Times" rather than "The New York Times" or "The Washington Post." It is at CPAC where mere mentions of words like "ACLU" or "Eric Holder" elicit audience boos and "homeschooling" elicit audience cheers.

And it is at CPAC where former Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is still an ideological force.

His speech to the adoring CPAC crowd did not disappoint. He entered to the music of Elvis, and it was fitting, because he was a CPAC rock star.

Santorum started the speech leveling a three-point argument for why the conservative movement is on the outs: the GOP's ethical lapses, incompetence and lack of principles.

He claimed that the 1994 Republican Revolution, a wave he rode into the U.S. Senate, would never have happened without Democratic scandals. He then attributed his party's recent defeats to the same issue.

"People will put up with a lot," Santorum said. "But not people who are dishonest."

He then indicted the Bush administration for the Hurricane Katrina response, saying, "The buck stops with the president." Santorum added that the incompetence translated to public relations difficulties on other issues, specifically the war in Iraq.

"We were making a lot of mistakes," he said. "We were afraid to tell them the truth as to who the enemy is."

Defying both William Safire and Bush speechwriters, he said, "We are not fighting a war on terror. Terror is a tactic."

Addressing his last reason for conservative failure, Santorum said, "We were unprincipled in the end."

He blamed then-President Bush, then-GOP nominee Sen. John McCain and then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulsen for opening the flood gates of government bailout aid. To Santorum, last fall's bailout "opened the door that the next president is bulldozing through."

Santorum pleaded not to abandon social conservative and neoconservative ideals and to embrace Reagan's three-legged stool. He does not, however, advocate waiting for the political pendulum to swing back into the GOP's favor.

"Hoping your opponents screw up is not a strategy for victory," he said.

Santorum is disgusted with many aspects of society. Among those are: Iran, Eric Holder, liberals and the media. On Iran, he said, "They [Israel] will fight with them [Iran] with every fiber in their bones, and we need to do the same. He callled conservatives "the grown ups," and classified liberals as "emotional," following up with an allusion to the left-wing as "effeminate."

Santorum believes there is a liberal conspiracy to destroy the family and church, employed by forces in the media, specifically Hollywood. In an era when many parents push their children to pursue careers in science and engineering, he took a different angle. He praised talk radio's ability to reach the logically minded, and pleaded with conservatives to encourage their children to go into careers in the arts, specifically screenwriting and acting, to portray stories that "reach your heart." It was a call echoed throughout the day at CPAC.

His final criticism of liberals was, "They think they found themselves a savior," referencing Obama. The crowd laughed. Santorum did not see the funny, chastising, "Don't laugh."

And the audience stopped.

Governor Jindal's response speech was embarrassingly stupid by practically everybody's standards, but that lapse aside he is the ONLY Republican I have ever heard actually tell the GOP to stop whining over why nobody likes them and start worrying, for the first time ever in their lives, about the problems of the American people.  You know, we, the ones they are supposed to be working for.  Until the GOP starts caring more about doing their job properly than they do about who is the most popular and who to blame, they will continue right along stinking up the place.
"And it is at CPAC where former Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is still an ideological force."

Hero worshipping another loser (literally-Casey wiped the floor with him). Just more evidence of their suicidal bent. There's probably a Kool-aid vat waiting for them after the comedian's speech tonight.
Ah, First Read-I knew you liked me, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattary, but, come on, Rich Santorum as Elvis?  As I have pointed out here before, the title of 'successor to Elvis' belongs to only one, the one, Obama. You think Santorum get get swooning crowds to defend his every move?
Santorum suggested Hurricane Katrina victims who couldn't evacuate should be penalized for not doing what they were told - but that was 3 days after Katrina, when the GOP was at its peak and drunk with power.

Today he blames former President Bush.

That's funny.

Rick Santorum: All 'roud good guy. Probably the best the GOP has to offer as far as the complete force to be wreckoned with.

The AP Wire Service already has predicted a one term reign for the Obama Trauma. He appears to be stepping on everyone's toes except the bottom runge of the ladder ... and that's because they get free food stamps, housing, insurance and everything under the sun. Why work? Once you get past the pride factor, just sit down and wait for the free checks to come rolling in.

When you are in the wilderness everyone it seems needs a Moses! Poor Rick can't believe he was rejected and blames everyone else. Does any remember Rick and his loyal Republicansrushing back to Washington to involve themselves in the Terry Schivo mess, does anyone remember. SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME! Those Democrats wants to destroy families, can anyone feed and cloth a family and we need  more population?
"He praised talk radio's ability to reach the logically minded..."

LOL!! Now THAT is a real joke! There is no logic to Rush Limbaugh's lies and ugly hatred. And as long as people like him are the conservatives' "finale" speaker, someone to whom they look up to, middle America will look for other, better role models. . .like Obama!  He is not a Messiah; most of us are well aware of the fact that he is a mere mortal with weaknesses as well as strengths.  I personally place my faith in God and pray for our President to make wise decisions.  I believe that it's going to take practically a miracle to get us out of this mess.  But publicly hoping the President fails, as Limbaugh has stated, is irresponsible. These are not the words to inspire us to invest or work hard or admire the GOP. In fact, such diatribe turns moderates like me completely off and ensures that I'll never be interested in supporting a party of NO ideas or inspiration.
This man is a nut. I almost got into a fight with him once, and I'm glad he's no longer my senator. What and embarrassment. It's clear from his rhetoric that he spites anyone who's not a far right wing fanatic.
Boy, CPAC attendees are even more bitter and brain-dead than I had originally thought - man on dog Santorum is still an ideological force!!  Man they're in bad shape.
I'm surprised they didn't have a few speeches by KKTurdblossom Rove, Mik McCuckoll, little Lynsey/Woolsey GAYham, Sachmo Gonzales or the Trixie Jingle from NOrleans, or ole Chaingangy (he'd be right down their line!)  This CPAC crowd has lost all pride in their ancestry and now have no hope for their posterity, bastard SOB's!!  They're a dangerous Taliban-like, unpatriotic embarrassment to the whole USA
I love it, SANTORUM - ewwww, best known as Pennsylvanias biggest political crash and burnm and a nasty by-product of gay sex.

GO GOP!

Palin/Bachmann 2012
Because the Raped Must Birth
It's interesting to note that many of the speakers at CPAC lost their seats in the senate or house elections, yet they still advocate the same stale ideas and listen to the likes of Rush Limbaugh.  It would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic.  The GOP needs to stop putting the GOP above the problems facing our nation.
His final criticism of liberals was, "They think they found themselves a savior," referencing Obama. The crowd laughed. Santorum did not see the funny, chastising, "Don't laugh."

What a bunch of mindless sheep.
These individuals do not cease to amaze me. What planet do they live or what kind of "drugs"are they on
I consider myself a pragmatic individual but they are on the fringe of lunacy.
This guy is a jerk. We got rid of him in Pennsylvania. Lest Americans have forgotten, he was one of the most vocal and ardent supporters within the senate for getting involved in the Terri Schiavo private family matter involving the rights of a husband to ensure the wishes of his wife were carried out follwoing a tragic illness which had already been fought over and decided in court for years with the husband prevailing. Santorum and the rest of the religious fanatics in the senate, along with then Governor Jeb Bush and then President George W. Bush, decided to get involved in a situation that was none of the government's business. The behavior of Santorum, the Bush brothers and others was beyond unbelieveable and disgraceful.

From Wikipedia; Terri Schiavo Case:

Final removal and federal involvement
Main article: Government involvement in the Terri Schiavo case
Following Judge Greer's order on March 18, 2005 to remove the feeding tube, Republicans in the United States Congress subpoenaed both Michael and Terri Schiavo to testify at a congressional hearing. It is contempt of Congress to prevent or discourage congressional witnesses from testifying. The purpose of the subpoenas was thus to postpone the feeding tube removal.

Greer told congressional attorneys, "I have had no cogent reason why the (congressional) committee should intervene." He also stated that last-minute action by Congress does not invalidate years of court rulings. Although Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Senator Rick Santorum, and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay brought the possibility of sanctioning Greer on charges of contempt of Congress, Congress did not attempt to enforce the subpoenas or take any action against Greer.

Palm Sunday Compromise
Main article: Palm Sunday Compromise
Governor Jeb Bush and Congressional Republicans anticipated Greer's adverse ruling well before it was delivered and worked on a daily basis to find an alternative means of overturning the legal process by utilizing the authority of the United States Congress. On March 20, 2005, the Senate, by unanimous consent, passed their version of a relief bill; since the vote was taken by voice vote, there was no official tally of those voting in favor and those opposed. Soon after Senate approval, the House of Representatives passed an identical version of the bill S.686, which came to be called the "Palm Sunday Compromise" and transferred jurisdiction of the Schiavo case to the federal courts. The bill passed the House on March 21 at 12:41 a.m. EST. President Bush flew to Washington D.C. from his vacation in Texas in order to sign the bill into law at 1:11 a.m. EST. As in the state courts, all of the Schindlers' federal petitions and appeals were denied, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to grant certiorari, effectively ending the Schindlers' legal options.

At the same time, the so-called Schiavo memo surfaced, causing a political firestorm. The memo was written by Brian Darling, the legal counsel to Florida Republican senator Mel Martinez. It suggested the Schiavo case offered "a great political issue" that would appeal to the party's base (core supporters) and could be used against Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat from Florida, because he had refused to co-sponsor the bill.[58] Nelson won re-election in 2006.

This is another one of the republican's heros? Romney, Coulter, Limbaugh, Palin, Jimdal, Santorum? You have got to be kidding. I was certain we had seen the last of loser Santorum.

The republicans are digging themselves quite a grave. They truly can't see that the majority of Americans finally see them for what they really are and what they really stand for. Thank goodness for that.
Santorum is a moron.
GOP stands for angry rich use the people who fear white folks only except Steele and Blackwell Party.  Rush Limbaugh is your leader.  End of story and party.
Santorum is the mascot of the decrepid Republican Party.  Keep talking Ricky.
Great week for Dems. These people think Obama has a 67% approval rating because the GOP isn't far right enough.  I love it.
Ah!  Rick Santorum. Why isn't he the face of the GOP instead of Jindal?
But where were the dog, sex and man talking pints?
Obammy is first class idiot who has never ran a business or anything else in his life. He has an inherit disregard for our constitution and fails to see that historically spending during a recessions cause more harm than good. The recession of the eighties was only relaxed by tax cuts, not rampant spending. It is going to take a little while for voters to feel the hand in the pocket of this administration. While you enjoy your $13/week tax cut, get ready for 20-30% increase in your utilities due to his tax increase, get ready for an additional 25 cents per gallon gas tax, and oh yes due to his new policies, get ready for heavy increases in state and local taxes. You folks need to read through the glitter speak and become more intellignet about the ways of big government before it is to late!!
Did he ever pay back the PA Dept of Education for his children who resided in Virginia, and were "educated" as by a charter school online, and the tax payers of PA paid for it?  I believe it was a a HUGE amount of money, and when it went public he refused right away to pay the state back?
I'm from PA...and a taxpayer...just wondering if he ever paid MY state's education dept. back??
He is the man that compared being gay to "beastiality"?
This is the same Rick Santorum that was usually at the top of the list for money he received from LOBBYISTS...ie; big oil, insurance co., drug companies??  Making him the highest paid senator in the lobbying gang??
He is the Senator Santorum that LOST his seat after these scandals were made public in PA....right?

And HE is the Rock star of the republican party?
SANTORUM RULES!

GO RICK, GO!
"effeminate"? Rick, you've been looking in the mirror too much !
Santorum is a fanactical right winged nut
Santorum is horrible, in college we went to lobby him and asked him as his constituents to vote in beatings against gay people for being gay into a hate crime. His response, "I have to ask my constituents how they feel about hate crimes!" I was at the time republican 19 and dumbfounded how could anyone feel hate crimes were okay? He lost me, now I am a fiscally conservative democrat and I think he is one of the reasons.

Plus he is amoral, he talks about scandel, he was voted out because he was using PA education tax money to pay for private schools for his daughters in Washington DC. He left the state he was voted in to represent and used our money to pay for private schools.

Horrible, Horrible Man.
He's a kook.  But as long as you keep him out of PA, it's fine with me.  Heck, send him back to West Virginia for that matter.

We're done with being embarrassed by his demented comments, not to mention paying for the education of his many children.

Demagogues are anti-American, and that conference sure is the motherlode of them.
Thank you for all the comments that every body through into the pot, it is great to take it all in and feel the buzz. If you get my meaning
Talk about lost, your leadership Mr. O, Stretch Me a Little Further Pelosi, and Chew Chew Reid is a fine leadership team and only have the American people in mind when they come up with these idiotic plans that will bring this country down (probably the plan all along).  I just can't believe you beleive in them. I must be paying for your mortgages to.  Lets see don't help anyone get ahead, just take from the successful oh  by the way they employ most of us and are creating the jobs and give it out as food stamps and socialized medicine and welfare. You and your type do not care a hoot about the great United States of America.  God Help Us All.  Just had to come over and se what the Socialist page had to say and was not surprised.

This is just strange! The GOP/RNC are truely mentally ill. Maybe this functional illiterate can sing. "You Aint Nothin But A Hound Dog." Do not sing it too loundly Santorum because, "Criminal Coulter" will start barking and scratching herself. Then "Crazy Cantor" will have to pick-up her crap. "Crazy Cantor" is still referred too by the Secret Service at the White House as. "The Lunatic On The Grass." Maybe "Conceded Coulter" had crapped there?? Never fear! "Puppet Palin" the "haunting huntress" can sniff out anything. Time to move forward America!
Vitriol and sarcasm are unpersuasive.
