Obama's first foreign policy test

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The president will likely receive a rock-star reception abroad, as he did during the campaign, but with recent criticism from some European leaders -- resisting the president’s call for stimulus' and increased troops in Afghanistan -- Obama faces a crucial foreign policy test early in his young presidency.

The president will have a lot on his plate during the trip, but it will provide a measure of his influence, particularly in reference to the world economy, Afghanistan, and the Muslim world.

Obama will save Europe and the world, with the same level of effectiveness he has shown in righting the United States in the short time he has been in office.

The world cheers in adoration.
Is there a reason that your not mentioning the following stop that Obama is making?

Concern has been mounting over President Obama's scheduled participation in the U.N.'s Alliance of Civilizations summit in Turkey next month, with some critics painting the organization as anti-Western and advocating Iranian interests.

"The Alliance might more appropriately be called a U.N.-approved Slush Fund for Advancing Iranian and Other Islamic Interests," wrote Claudia Rosett, a Forbes contributor and journalist-in-residence with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
Obama is reportedly due at the Alliance April 7. The organization was formed in 2005 as an offshoot of the Dialogue of Civilizations, an earlier U.N. project founded by former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, who is still a member of the Alliance.

Other Alliance member states or participating organizations include China; the Organization of the Islamic Conference; the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; the Arab League; Turkey; and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization. Not on the list is Israel.
In 2006, the Alliance released a 63-page official report largely laying blame on the West for negative perceptions of Muslims and Islam. The report only mentioned Islamic terrorism once – in its recommendations section where it suggested the Western media should not use the term terrorism.
"The Western media should refrain from using certain terms in reporting on Muslims and Islam", the report recommended, "including the use of terms such as 'Islamic terrorism' and 'Islamic fascism' – [which] have contributed to an alarming increase in Islamophobia which further exacerbates Muslim fears of the West."

Not to mention the following:

Barack Obama is conducting his own affirmative action program to get more Muslims in the White House.

The move began with Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn, who took his oath of office with a hand on the Quran, to solicit the resume of what he considered to be the nation's most qualified adherents of Islam.

According to the Denver Post, when White House officials heard about the program, it was put on overdrive.

So far, 45 Ivy League grads, Fortune 500 executives and government officials have been submitted for consideration.

J. Saleh Williams, program coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, sifted through more than 300 names as part of the search.

"It was mostly under the radar," Williams said. "We thought it would put (the president) in a precarious position. We didn't know how closely he wanted to appear to be working with the Muslim American community."

Ellison is serious about his faith. He made the pilgrimage to Mecca with the sponsorship of the Muslim American Society, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In 1991, Mohamed Akram wrote a memo for the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood that explained its work in America as "a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God's religion is made victorious over all other religions."

I can't think of a time either as a candidate or during his young Presidency that President Obama has buckled under the pressure and failed to pass an important test.  I don't expect any different here either.

Obama is a broken man, Stressed out and losing favor among Americans and especially in the world.

Liberals will have to deal with it but instead they keep bringing up Bush, Reagan and all the other excuses they can find. But that's typical and expected.
You mean he's *NOT* a rock star??????
If history is any lesson, and, if Obama doesn't score big on domestic issues, we will soon see him making many more foreign trips as he focuses more on foreign relation issues.
Oh, I'm sure the terrorists LOVE Obummer's foreign policy. The next apology to Hawaii will be "I'm sorry we didn't stop the North Koreans from launching that missle."
The leaders may not embrace Pres. Obama's guidance right now but hopefully the support of the European people will sway the leaders eventually. I think his popularity will go a long way and leaders will benefit more if they support him, are open to change. As we know, Pres. Obama is very intelligent and convincing so some minds may be changed-give it some time.

Speaking of foreigners.....Hungary has fined Obama's buddy, Soros, for manipulating financial markets and causing ruin.  When is Obama going to do the same?
Maybe Gordon Brown will give him the DVD's to return as they don't work in the UK.

Just returned from the UK yesterday and I didn't see many preparations for the fans.  They were more worried about keeping the protesters away.

The reason the the Europeans are resisting a stimulus similar to the US is that the unemployment benefit in Germany is 80% of your wage, they have healthcare, the infrastructure such as road and rail is much more advanced.  So the question is what exactly does he want them to stimulate?  Maybe a little research (for example the DVD's) on how other countries operate is called for.  After all he is a citizen of the world.

Also can't wait for his reaction to the French who claim it was the Anglo-Saxon economies that caused this, or the Brazilians who claim it was the white-blue-eyed races.
GOBAMA

Make US proud as you have already

Time to stand behind our pres people. This is a big deal

Hopefully he can convince the rest of the world that all americans are not a bunch of flag waving, war mongering, rightwingnuts trying to remake the world to their vision of bible carting christians saving muslims and other heathens from themselves.
President Obama knows how to "work the middle" and understands that not everyone will agree with him and most importantly, he listens.  You can't blame the rest of the world for recenting the U.S. since we caused the global meltdown.  As for the rock-star status, foreigners recognize intelligence when they see and hear it.  It has less to do with Obama the man and more to do with the fact that once again the world marveled that in the United States where slavery once existed and racism still exists, Americans would surprise the world and elect an African-American.
He'll pass the test with flying colors, that much I'm sure of.  He has the necessary tools to be a success.  Those in other countries will see the improvement over bush and his cowboy diplomacy.  An adult is leading now.

Gods speed President Obama.
If Alberto Gonzalez or John Yoo or Douglass Feith (reputedly 'the DUMBEST MAN ON EARTH) set foot in Eurpoe, they're likely to be ARRESTED as WAR CRIMINALS !!

Hey, George, Dick !!
Let's take a trip to SPAIN !!

Sure, it'll be lotss of FUN !

You'll be treated as LIBERATORS !!!
From WashingMonthly:

'...POST-POST-PARTISANSHIP.... In the weeks leading up to Inauguration Day, and in the first month or so afterwards, President Obama not only talked a good game on bipartisanship, but actually seemed willing to engage the minority party directly. Slate's John Dickerson argues that the White House has effectively given up on the idea.

At a recent lunch with reporters, Budget Director Peter Orszag was asked if he could name a useful idea submitted by Republicans. He couldn't -- and didn't even pretend he'd considered many. When House Republicans put out a budget last week, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, "The party of no has become the party of no ideas."

Gibbs probably wouldn't have said that 40 days ago, when the White House was treating the issue of bipartisanship more carefully. But after party-line votes in the House and Senate and minimum flexibility from GOP leaders, Obama aides say that Republicans are not "acting in good faith." Which leads them to two conclusions: One, their acts of conciliation buy them nothing in negotiations with the GOP; two, and more important, they've decided they'll pay no political price for acting in a more partisan fashion.

Both of those assumptions appear entirely right. The president has reached out, repeatedly, to congressional Republicans. It hasn't generated any concessions from the GOP; it hasn't produced any meaningful policy recommendations; and it hasn't tempered over-the-top Republican rhetoric...'

Well........
What's the LAST Good Idea a Republican has generated?

Besides, Let's INVADE IRAQ !!
or Hey, let's TORTURE those guys !!
Or Have we given the Rich enough tax cuts, yet ??
Or WHO needs an education ?
When have you ever heard the President of the United States being compared to a "rock star"?  Interesting?  I heard someone say there are hundreds of people going as part of the group.  Who's paying for all of this?
One thing we know for sure is that President Obama will not be the buffoon that GWB was during his foreign visits. Furthermore, he will be able to articulate the US position on issues without "speaking in tongues".

The "rock star" designation by some in the MSM is getting old and I'm sure the President does not self-identify with it. This is a serious trip with serious implications so the media needs to treat it as such ans top talking about whether he'll be received the same way he was last summer. He is not candidate Obama he is now POTUS.

One thing we can be sure of...

The World Leaders WON'T hear "With us or against us", nor will they be referred to as an "Axis of Evil".

We can all be proud to be represented by an intelligent leader.  How refreshing!

Well, there's YOUR world and then there's reality. The PRESIDENT is doing just fine for a broken man, don't you think? His approval rating are soaring (but only if your in reality). Take your meds, turn off Fox News and lie down and rest.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer - What exactly is your point.  Even is you were exactly right about the organization he is speaking to.  And even if he is reaching out to find some Muslim Americans to serve in his administration, I think you'd be surprised that most rational Americans don't think those are bad things.  It's called talking to your adversaries and diversity.  For the billionth time, Obama is not a Muslim.  He is not trying to subvert America, rather restore it to its former glory.  And not all Muslim Americans are bad people.
I see that First Read actually mentioned "Rock Star."  Well, then, why don't you just assign Courtney from "The Scoop" to this story?

But, on second thought, I suppose that would just leave you at home alone with John McCain, while all the real political pundits get to go to Europe.

What are you....Joe the R.V. Builder??  You should be out trying to lure windmill manufacturers to your area to fill up all those empty manufacturing plants.

I've never understood the Rock Star analogy that well anyway.  Same with the transcendant speaker thing.

As far as I know, he doesn't play an instrument.  Unlike Clinton, he apparently doesn't hang with the groupies and there is no evidence he dances any better than George Bush.

Clinton was far better off the cuff and far more accomplished with the teleprompter, assuming he used one.

And as for the big Russian gesture.  There is only one reason for it.  The Russians want it there way with regard to Iran and missile defense.

By the way, does anyone even remember the very significant nuclear arms reduction agreement between Bush and Putin?

I'm thinking that if that had been a failure, we'd be hearing about it and we aren't.  Even Obama is on record as saying he would like to build further on it, beyond the goals that appear to have been met.

Meanwhile Obama stands to equal what it took Reagan, Bush, Bush 20 years to do, with help from the fourth stooge, Bill Clinton who increased the national debt 1.4 trillion in his 8 years.

A total of 28 years to get us where we are, and we now have the promise to increase it another 50% in just four.

Now that's change I can believe in.

Cur-Lar-Mo Obama.  Three, three, three stooges in one.
Ed Crane show me the last time this happened since the end of the cold war.

J. Richter

I guess you aren't old enough to remember Putin of Russia spending a few days at the ranch in Crawford with W.

It's useless for me to go into more detail realizing that.

Hey, Sponge Bob's on J.

Kelly (from Pittsburgh) (Sent Tuesday, March 31, 2009 1:43 PM)

I would add that the vast majority of americans that are Muslim (and for that matter muslims throughout the world) are not bad people.  I'm sure that Christians hate being scapegoated for the failings of a few of their brethren...the same can be said for Muslims.
How refreshing!  The United States is sending a President who can actually communicate, who has grace and dignity as well.  My relatives in England are proud to call me their American cousin again. Love them Brits!
There are 200+ Americans at the protest right now who all want to ask President Obama and Congress why they've ignored the 700+ applications from states calling for a Article V Constitutional Convention, so far they've ignored it at home, maybe abroad it will get more media coverage.
Oh, I'm sure the terrorists LOVE Obummer's foreign policy. The next apology to Hawaii will be "I'm sorry we didn't stop the North Koreans from launching that missle."

Because that'll show the united states!!!  nuke hawaii!!!   woohoo.

I can't believe how silly and stupid things are getting on this board.

North Korea would not attack the united states just as Iran won't attack Isreal (yet we support them blindly)

The reason is any of those countries would be easily turned into a solid sheet of glass and smoldering ember.

The reason that North Korea wants to test this weapon, is to show the world that they don't have to sit at the kids table anymore during thanksgiving. And the only way to get heard(in their eyes "respected") is to be a threat.

So maybe through diplomacy and standing next to them rather than over them we can achieve this without the necessary need for nuclear proliferation.
I'm sure he'll do great and am proud that he's representing us.  Heck, if he just chews with his mouth closed and doesn't address other world leaders from across the room by their last name (Blair) then he'll be a huge improvement.
I heard someone say there are hundreds of people going as part of the group.  Who's paying for all of this?

Same people that paid for Bush's entourage. Why do you even ask?
And not all Muslim Americans are bad people.
Kelly (from Pittsburgh) (Sent Tuesday, March 31, 2009 1:43 PM)

Not all Muslims are terrorists. But 98% of terrorists are Muslims. They ALL advocate per their bible that Islam must rule the world. By violence if needed. You and I are nothing more than cattle to be sold at market or slaughtered. Only by the fact that we are not Muslim. That is our 'crime' worthy of death...
You and I may not be religious, but this is a religious war. It is centuries old and they are still fighting it. Look beyond today and the tip of your nose.
Whether or not you agree, everyone should watch the movie: Obsession, radical Islam's war on the west.

We need to hear the 'moderate' muslim voice in protest and in action to deal with the Muslim threats. We don't! They are guilty by their silence.

Also can you imagine the outcry if G.W. Bush had asked for resumes based on Christianity or Judism?? It's not affirmitive action, it's infiltration.

Geez, man.  Talk about drinking the right-wing Kool-aid.  Dude, you must've bought stock in the company.

Speaking of which, poor Bob-Obamanation.  You had a golden opportunity to slam Obama yesterday when his "takeover" of GM sent stocks plummeting.  Well, apparently all is forgiven, as stocks are up +189.  Furthermore, unlike you, most people don't blame Obama for the economy according to the latest Washington Post poll (which is pretty moderate to conservative).  I guess that's why you've been so silent lately.
