Energy aide may have had swine flu

From NBC's Athena Jones

In his daily briefing, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said a member of the advance team for Energy Secretary Chu went to Mexico and developed flu symptoms. He and three members of his family tested positive for type A influenza and that it's probable they have H1N1. Further testing is being done by the CDC, and all four sick individuals experienced only mild symptoms and all four have recovered.

This person, in fact, has been cleared to go back to work by doctors and is working today.

Gibbs also said that Chu has not exhibited symptoms and there are no plans to test him. Same is true of the president, he added.

People, take a good multi-vitamin- Nature's Way "ALIVE" is a great brand, and take vitamin C.  Build up your immune system, stay at home if you're sick, and PRACTICE EXTREMELY GOOD HYGIENE.  Be responsible citizens so that hopefully this strain will not get worse, and contaminate us all.
So what I am hearing is this flu is treatable, and we will get thru this.  I am grateful this admin has handled it the way it has.  Can remember the last 8 years of the idiot in charge not giving a hoot, as in New Orleans, and the list goes on and on.  To see the new admin react or should I say take immediate action is awesome!!!!
Conservatives are still holding out hope that Obama meets his demise via swine flu.

i agree with joe biden stay home when you can and don't travel in airplanes or any other inclosed areas
until this thing is over. I would not put my kids or any one I love on an airplane right now.I don't think the President would either.
But everyone was complaining about Biden's comments.

Protect Yourselves everyone.
The aide apparently recovered and is doing well as most people do. In a country with a population of hundreds of millions and we only have 100 cases is that a reason to panic? I believe due caution by washing hands and wiping down things used by others who may or may not have the flue such as plaground equipment, drinking fountains, door knobs and lavatory faucets can go a long way in preventing the spread of this and any germs especially during cold and flu season.

Unfortunately so many of us are used to being told to be afraid, be very afraid, (of our own shadows if they thought they could get away with it) much ado is being made of this. Simply getting the word out that it is here and what we can do to prevent it should be enough.
One more big media scare to help keep any attention what so ever off the epic failure of our nation and the Obama administration.
I don't understand why they think Biden made a gaffe. He said that was what he would his family to do. And frankly I think he is right. Not the time to take chances. Also should always carry Purell - disinfect your hands before eating anything that is picked up by your hands. Common sense.

Please remember the raciial overtones to Hispanics. So people show compassion and tolerance how would you feel if you were a target of it?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu
fever
cough
sore throat
body aches
headache
chills and fatigue

Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

A lot of people want to know if you can get swine flu from eating pork products that come from pigs that were infected with swine flu. The answer is no, you can’t get it from eating pork or pork products.

It spreads the same way that other flu viruses spread. It normally only spreads from pig to pig, but according to the CDC it can infect humans. It seems that this current strain of swine flu is affecting humans more than other strains in the past and is spreading more easily from human to human.

So, while you don’t need to be concerned about getting swine flu from the pork you eat, you still should be concerned with protecting yourself from the virus.

If you have a  virus which of the following would you not do? are some steps to take to help prevent the transmission of this swine flu (or any other flu virus).

   * Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately.
   * Wash your hands frequently.
   * Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth (which is how a flu virus that has gotten on your hands can enter your body).
   * Avoid close contact with sick people.
   * Go to work  if you do not get sick.
The CDC says that the virus is “susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir.” This is good news.
So another case of someone going to Mexico and bringing the flu back with them. But I though Faux Noise said it was being brought here by all of the sick illegal aliens swarming across our borders?
Essentially, just do what you would normaly do to avoid getting sick.  This isn't rocket science here, and there's no need for panic.

Sadly, some will use this as an opportunity to Obama-hate, while others here will use it as justification of their own racism.

I note that the effected people tested positive for an "A" strain. As I have suggested, it seems possible that people over 40+ may have at least partial immunity as there were some bad "A" strains around on the mid 70s. I had a bad case in 76. In the last 3 weeks, I had some minor flu symptoms, was out of work 1 day and am now fine.

Follow good hygiene guidelines as Beverly suggests and rev up your immune system with multi vitamins and vitamin C. Taking 500mgs of Ester C (non-acidic) every 4 hrs as soon as you feel symptoms coming on will help your body fight off the bug.

Do not panic, folks. The Dark Lord and the TX rich kid who sold panic for 8 yrs are GONE.
If cluelessness and confusion were symptoms, Gibbs would be diagnosed without need for formal lab confirmation.  Four years of this guy until he leaves for greener ($$$$) pastures?

Poor Fixed News was all over the Biden so-called "flap"  Nope - he was just saying what many of us feel.  Go Joe!  The President and his Administration are hadling so many things so well......I can't believe this is the same country as last year!  Whoopee!
OMG! Don't say its so!  Everyone, get to your panic rooms!
Dave, Palm Harbor, FL: '...I don't understand how the UAW which is the reason the auto makers are in trouble...'

Sorry, sonny POOR MANAGEMENT led them to produce crappy products that nobody wanted to buy
Management didn't invest in quality or good gas mileage, they wanted to produce cars with high mark ups
See what happens

Presumably you think that Bear Stearns and AIG workers are responsible for their companies' failures

THAT'S WHY Republicans are going belly up, too
Ignorant Dittoheads

Bob L :'...Isn't Chrysler a privately owned company?...'

I think it was bought by a hedge fund, Cerebus
But, when you keep asking for government handouts, the government needs to take a controlling interest
Taxpayers need to be protected

KILLED BY THE DEMOCRATS' : '...CHRYSLER IS DEAD --- KILLED BY THE DEMOCRATS' SELFISH EARMARK & PORK SPENDING IN THE STIMULUS BILL.
CHRYSLER IS DEAD...'

LIAR !!
It was the Southern Republicans who tried to kill Chrysler and GM
Both got into trouble lang ago, during Bush's 'Failed Presidency'
This didn't just happen during the past 100 days
Chrysler was killed by bad management and the 'Bush Depression'
Good to know he and family are fully recovered.  This could happen to anyone.  We read often about cruise ships returning to port with hundreds of ill passengers.

I agree with the comment that Biden didn't make a gaffe because he was stating what he told his family.  It isn't yourself who might get on the train or plane with the flu--it's the person who may not have sick leave so has to go to work or the one who didn't use good sense and figured it was a cold.  Have to chuckle when the right jumps in on VP Biden mistakes--for 8 years, former Pres Bush stumbled all over his words and often.  We need to take a deep breath and say, so what.  These folks are human like the rest of us.  How many of us have posted comments that when read again didn't sound quite the way we intended, or there were misused words, misspellings; I know I have.

Ed, FW TX, I remember that awful A-Victoria flu because I had it when I lived in SD CA.  It was nasty stuff, went back to work too soon and had a relapse. But since that flu, have avoided catching things even though I was exposed to plenty of colds and flu.
In response to Matt and your death-wish for the President from swine flu.  That mode of problem solving is precisely why you conservatives are where you are at; the bottom of the barrel.  Until you learn to work with the other side to solve and compromise on issues, that is where you will stay.  Your response is a disgrace.
Thank you, Beverly, that is very helpful especially if you haven't been seeing all the news on TV.  I appreciate people like you.  This situation can be very scary, but if you take prcautions, this will keep everyone from getting a bad case of flu.
The only complaint I heard about Joe Biden being Joe Biden was from Tom Harkin the Demoncrat senator from Iowa.  Gees, even Demoncrats are getting after Biden.
Glad so many libs on this site went to Med School.
