From NBC's Mark Murray
There's another national poll with favorable numbers for Sonia Sotomayor.

By a 54%-24% margin, American voters approve of President Obama's Sotomayor pick, according to Quinnipiac University's survey; 22% say they're undecided.

Democratic voters approve of her, 81%-3%; independent voters approve of her, 50%-26%; and Republicans approve of her, 26%-46%.

Also, women approve of her, 59%-18%, while men approve of her, 48%-31%.

It's nice to see that Mainstream America favors Sotomayor for the next Supreme Court Justice.  A 54%-24% margin is very healthy and no amount of whining from the limpwristed conservative crybaby racists is going to dampen Mainstream America's support for this fine jurist.  The politicos of the sore loser party are wise to keep their complaints civil as they know that they are in danger of becoming a far smaller disloyal minority.

Confirm Sotomayor Now!
Go Lakers!
It is all about race and gender. Title 7 be damned.

Remember Barack: “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.”

What a flawless system you self-righteous lefties have worked out: If I DO take a persons race, gender or religion into consideration while voting or hiring then you accuse me of being prejudiced but if I DON’T take a persons race, gender or religion into consideration while voting or hiring then you accuse me of not being inclusive.

Which is it Barack?
amazing how people are forming opinions of her when they've not read her decisions, there haven't been any hearings yet, and all they know about her is her resume and background.  I say, wait until you hear what she has to say at the hearings before taking a position one way or the other.
Judge Sotomayor seems like a very warm and capable woman. I am happy to see that many of my fellow Americans agree!

Dear Tired of Double Standards:

First, that would be President Barack.

Second, nobody cares what you do. You do whatever you think is best and you will reap what you sow.

Pretty simple, no?

And the best part?

We don't have to read your whiny comments.

Poor baby.
Wow, I just saw the clip of Pat Buchanan arguing that Soja had to be an affirmative action pick because no white males made it in the final four. The GOP really needs to get a hold of these guys before they damage the party beyond repair. There is now way they will get a majority if they keep insinuating that white males are always superior to females or minorities. Seriously, Pat, why did the final four have to include a white male? I know Lawerence asked the same thing, but was it not possible that four women were more qualified? Is it that much of a stretch for you to think that?
Dear "SOTOMAYOR IS ANTI-WHITE MALE & TERRIBLY BIASED" :

If Judge Sotomayor is racist and sexist because of her ruling in Ricci v. DeStefano, what are Judge Rosemary Pooler and Judge Robert Sack (who are both white)?

It was a unanimous ruling by a 3-judge panel!

(This is a silly question...I know I won't get an answer.)
No question that the GOP needs to dump mindless ideological bullying and keep their powder dry over Sotomayor.

pretty cool isn't it! and for the past 8 years you thought we were ineffectual..
This is just a "first impressions" poll of Sotomayor, which is still good news.  My first impression is a positive one, but I would like to know more about her, too.  This summer should be interesting!

P.S. The same people who want liberals to stop bashing Bush should give Obama some time to implement his policies and turn the economy around.  I keep reading about some early signs of improvement, like how the recession has bottomed out, retail sales are improving, the stock market is gradually going up, etc., but people like "no bo" don't want to ever acknowledge anything good is happening. Don't you want our country to recover? Almost every economist said we had to do a stimulus package, and many said the one we ended up with was too small.  It's kind of like giving a sick person the right anti-biotic but too little of it to do the job.

It must be great to INTEMATELY know a Supreme Court Justice nominee so well that YOU know for SURE that she is something other than what she seems to be.

Oh and please hit the caps lock key. It is as if you are yelling and we don't really need that. Civil conversation doesn't require some loon to yell.

You are entitled to your opinion and to back that opinion with documented facts. Not taken out of context facts but entire and complete quotes where you cite your resource etc. That leads to credibility where yelling YOUR PERSONAL OPINION means nothing to anyone but you. Have a great Friday and a great weekend. We love doing battle with trolls and flamers, without you it would be rather boring on this site.

--I don't think I ever agree with Pat on anything--unless it's Patrick J. Buchanan (now that man has some good points--More than Pat, Huntington, NY).  Twitter seems to be a media tool to 1) seem hip and 2) follow stories easier--don't have to actually work to report.  But Pat, Huntington, NY relying on common sense, we'll have to mark this, even if it is on a pointless point.  And I mean no offense, honestly.

[Also, women approve of her, 59%-18%, while men approve of her, 48%-31%.]
--I am surprised at how close those numbers are, really only a 10% difference.  That tells me that people view her pick as not necessarily about gender.  Good for her, I say.

From my 1st thoughts post ... On Sonia Sotomayor, she is unacceptable due to her decisions, while she was correct to dissent in a 1st Article case, Pappas v. Giuliani.  She SHOULD terrify us all with her decision in Maloney v. Cuomo where in she determined that the Constitution of the United States DOES NOT PROTECT AN INDIVIDUAL FROM CIVIL RIGHTS ABUSES BY THE STATE, ONLY FROM FEDERAL ABUSES!  So, it doesn't take much thought to understand that under HER interpretation all abortion foes need to do is ban abortion state by state.  As long as the federal gov doesn't due it, Roe doesn't apply as Roe is a "Constitutional" right only barring the FED from banning them.  Yes Maloney v. Cuomo was not abortion related, but wake up stupid, if your rights aren't safe from the states, NONE OF YOUR RIGHTS ARE SAFE FROM THE STATES!

--Her Ivy background is the only thing that does concern me.  Especially since quite often the people who do so well in these institutions are not always, let's say, well-adjusted socially.  In her defense, Sotomayor does actually appear socially capable--and I think that goes to my definition of what empathy should be, not just a code word for liberal.  I'd still like to see a S.C. justice with a more modest--non-Ivy background (and don't misconstrue that I don't think Sotomayor shouldn't be proud of her achievement).  I mean that for both sides of the isle.  And thank goodness Obama didn't choose Sen. Thanks for the back! I missed that one...is it serious? They have short memories don't they?
Judge Sotomayor's statement about white men was a simple suggestion that her experience as a Latino woman would add significantly to any dialogue. That is just common sense, not racism.
What kills me about these rants questioning the intelligence of Obama and Sotomayor is the underlying fear that they are indeed, smarter than the average white man, black woman or green goblin.

What would Rush know about smarts? He needs his accountant to assure him that there are enough zeros on his paycheck. Once you get accepted to an ivy league school, you have to try very hard to flunk out. Any honest attempt at your studies will get you the benefit of the doubt, although just hanging out doing ludes or vics can result in failure. The tough thing at these institutions is graduation with distinction.
Being published with the Yale Law Review or, gasp, being editor of the Harvard Law Review does not happen due to affirmative action. Any Latin at the end of your degree requires both inherent ability and even more hard work. Sotomayor knew what she was saying about her experience as a Latino, she would never leave her flank so exposed. What she did do was underestimate the ignorance of those interpreting it.

If there were no white males on the bench, the reverse statement about the white experience would be relevant, but we have years to go to find that scenario. We need representation of more women, Asians and African-Americans on the Supreme Court before the required diversity is reached.

To J. Merle - I'm Sure this pick would have been high on Hillary's list of potential justices, so what would you be saying then? I wonder about your sincerity in support of her. Is it a ruse so you can appear to be center-based to make your obtuse criticism of Obama appear rational?
It would be great if the moderator could delete comments from Eric, Salinas where he, in the process of calling people racists, uses homophobic slurs. Please take this into consideration.
I'm wondering why no one has addressed the assumption based on (let's be honest) race that Sotomayor could be pro-life.

The media says it's due to a lack of paper trail, but really it's because she's latino and most latino's (statistcally) are pro-life.  They say because she is catholic, but if it was a white guy it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm hoping she ends being pro-life (unlikely, I know), but it's pretty awful of the media to ask a racially biased question like this.

You have a very pro-choice president selecting a justice, and even though it's obvious the court would be able to overturn Roe with one more pro-life justice the media and various womens rights groups assume she could be pro-life because there is no paper trail saying one way or the other.  Of course instead of using their brains and noting that the guy choosing her is a champion of their cause, they notice she is a catholic and a hispanic and just can't get their minds completely around the fact that she could be those things and also be pro-choice.

Is it paranoia or racism?

I say a little from column "a" and a little from column "b."
Oh, by the way Feisty, I couldn't get this posted yesterday, but I have to agree with the criticism of Obama putting mustard on his cheeseburger. What a waste of perfectly good mustard...

To which school did you apply?  Did you know anyone on the review committee?  Do you know that the minorities that did get in were less qualified than you?  Do you have absolutely anything to back up this ridiculous claim?  Of course not.  You just want to blame the system, because it makes your life easier to accept.  And why use truth, when you can use a talking point instead.
Does anyone REALLY believe that Obama didn't press this lady on her abortion views?  At the end of the day, I'm sure he did apply a litmus test with her on Roe v Wade.  How else could he now be reassuring his lucrative abortion industry friends (who've lined his pockets $$) that she'll be abortion friendly. He was probably pretty clever and used another word for abortion when he asked her....that way he could "honestly" say he never asked her about her views on abortion.  Then again, that's what the abortion movement has ALWAYS done--use clever, nice-sounding phrases to distract from the real issue--the life or death of an unborn baby.  Like they're going to do with the new health care bill--use "reproductive services" instead of "abortion".  Call it a "blob of tissue" intead of a "baby".  Always emphasize a "woman's right" (everyone likes "rights", don't they?) and NEVER mention the baby's rights.  (Don't they realize that about 50% of the dead babies are female?). I'm just glad that sonograms don't lie---the picture of an unborn child is crystal clear and tells the story that every baby is created (from conception) in the image of God.  Feminists can robotically chant "My body, my choice" all they want--it doesn't change the TRUTH.

I hope you realize that Bill Clinton and his Secretary of State Madeline Albright put sanctions on Iraq that directly contributed to the deaths of an Estimated 500,000 Iraqi's.  Not mention the bloodshed (and genocide) they sponsored in the Balkans, and Kosovo.  In each case both insisted they made right the right decision, and the benfits of each campaign outwieghed the cost in human life...which is easy to say because of the human life being spent weren't American Voters.

I am troubled by the attempt to demonize a Latina judge with such impeachable credentials.  We are often told that people of color lack the credentials that is why they are not chosen. Then you have a Latina, number 2 in her class at Princeton, Yale law review, judge for 17 years and that is still not enough.  Equally troubling is the tendency of liberal station like MSNBC to exclude Latina(o) commentators on speaking to the issue.  Tancredo calls the largest Latino Civil Rights organization " a Latino KKK" and reporters do not interview someone to respond. I wonder if they would have done the same if he called the NAACP a Black KKK. Americans of every race, ethnicity, and gender should support Sotomayor because she qualified.

Wow, I never realized how bad I had it being a white male. Funny, but in all my years in management, I never once heard someone say, "You know, I liked that candidate, but they seemed like a typical white male person and I'm not sure they have what it takes." But I have heard that about other ethnic minorities. And as I looked around all the companies I worked for, I saw lots and lots of white faces in the management roles and very few faces of color.

At my son's college orientation, I looked around the room and struggled to find more than a few faces that weren't white.

So dude, I feel for you with all the white discrimination that is going on in this world. Other than the fact that white unemployment is much lower than most other minorities, white males tend to make more money, and white males have the bulk of management jobs in US corporations, I guess I've missed all the tough times that have been forced on us by the minorities.

By the way, there are still plenty of whites in the ivy league schools. If you were truly qualified, you would have made it. Perhaps you should put your bitterness aside, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and get on with your life!
Nicholas: Minnesota, you remind me of Roman Hruska (R - NE).  During Nixon's pursuit of a strict constructionist, one of Nixon's nominees was decried as mediocre.  Hruska wondered out loud if there wasn't room on the SC for a mediocre judge.  Uh, no, there isn't.
