First thoughts: Obama calls timeout

*** Obama’s timeout: In the game of basketball, after your team commits some errors and after the opposition runs off a couple of easy baskets, you'll routinely see the coach make this move: call a timeout. It's intended to settle down the team, get them back to basics, and slow down the opponent's momentum. And that might be the best way to view today’s televised Rose Garden press conference at 12:30 pm ET. As we’ve mentioned before, it's been a tough past week for President Obama. He's been on the defensive on health care, Iran, the economy, and the deficit. Even his poll numbers are coming back down to Earth, although the latest Washington Post/ABC poll has his approval in the mid-60s. So, like a basketball coach watching his team endure a mini-slump, he's decided to call a timeout and reset his message. (Also today, Obama meets with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.)

Video: NBC’s Chuck Todd and The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson discuss the political stakes for President Barack Obama in getting his health care reform plan passed this year.

*** Time to trot out Will.i.am, too? In fact, you could argue that -- on the subject of health care -- he actually first called this timeout yesterday. Monday’s White House announcement on cost savings for prescription drugs seemed to serve as a pep talk for Democrats worried about the chances of passing health-care reform this year. "To those who, here in Washington, who’ve grown accustomed to sky-is-falling prognoses and the certainties that we cannot get this done, I have to … revive an old saying we had from the campaign: Yes we can.” But yesterday's event was also bizarre, because at noon ET and then at 2:30 pm, nobody from the administration could answer how the $80 billion would save money for the government when or if it reforms health care. By 5:00 pm, the White House finally gave us a number -- $50 billion of the $80 billion would be money that could be used to cut down on the cost of the health-care reform effort. Our question: Why not have that number at the ready at noon with the president or even 2:30 pm for Robert Gibbs? It was very odd, very slapped together. Clearly, the White House was desperate to show off some good news on the financial front on this issue after a week of bad news from the Congressional Budget Office. Also, as for the president's use of the "Yes we can" slogan yesterday, it may be a reminder of how much the president misses having an opponent. Right now, his opponent is himself.

Video: President Obama’s health care reform plan now has the support of the nation’s leading pharmaceutical trade group, PHRMA, which is pledging $80 billion to lower prescription drug costs for seniors and the U.S. government. Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the White House Office of Health Reform, discusses how this deal will help lower overall costs.

*** We’ll always have Cairo: Obviously, one of the questions that Obama will receive at today’s news conference will be the GOP criticism about his statements regarding the violence and protests in Iran. But we pose this question: Do you think Republicans would be less critical if Obama had simply stated what he said in his Cairo speech about freedom IN GENERAL in the Middle East? “All people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak you're mind and have a say in how your are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn’t steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. These are not just American ideas. They are human rights.” Privately, the White House points to the Cairo speech quite often. But why not simply use these words for Iran specifically? Also, the president may have to answer this question today: Do Iranians have the ability to speak their mind, to say how they are governed, have the confidence in the rule of law and the EQUAL administration of justice? Has the Iranian regime been transparent, have they stolen from the people? If he can't answer in the affirmative for any of these questions, doesn't that mean there should be consequences for the regime in its dealings with the U.S. and the world?

Video: Republicans have been lining up to argue that President Barack Obama isn’t saying enough to support the protesters in Iran. A Hardball panel debates whether his response is too timid.

*** Where in the world is ... Mark Sanford? If you're a leader in your party trying to go toe-to-toe with the Democratic administration on fiscal policy, as well as a potential 2012 candidate, chances are that you don't want 1) headlines announcing you've gone missing for several days; 2) your wife saying that she doesn't know where you are but that she isn't concerned; and 3) your spokesman saying you've gone away to clear your head after your stimulus battle. It’s all just … weird, even though Sanford associates insist that he does this all the time. Well, last night, Sanford’s office announced that he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
“I want to emphasize that this isn't something that either staff or Mrs. Sanford is concerned about,” the governor’s chief spokesman said in a statement. “As we said earlier today, it isn't unusual for the governor to be out of pocket for several days after the legislative session. We knew he would be difficult to reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently.” What’s also interesting is that two critics most concerned about his disappearance and whereabouts weren’t Democrats, but Republicans -- Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and state Sen. Jake Knotts. The old saying, marching to the beat of his own drummer, applies as well to Sanford as it does any elected official. How likely, though do folks who march to their own drummer beat end up as nominees for their party?

*** I’m a joker, I’m a smoker… : One thing the media seemed to make crystal clear yesterday and this morning is that the president is still an occasional smoker. In all of the coverage of the president's signing of the tobacco legislation, many reporters made note of the president's past smoking, as well as Robert Gibbs' unconvincing spin that he's constantly fighting this addiction. The White House, of course, won't confirm the president still smokes. But it has not said these words: "He's no longer a smoker." Is it a big deal? No, just one of those presidential oddities that biographers live for. And everyone will want to know: When does he smoke? Is it on the golf course? The Truman Balcony?

Video: Saying "I know how difficult it can be" to stop smoking, President Obama signs a bill substantially strengthening anti-smoking efforts.

*** Let’s talk about sex, baby… let’s talk about you and me: Finally, Roll Call reports that embattled Sen. John Ensign will address his GOP colleagues at their weekly luncheon. “While no one knows exactly what Ensign will say to his fellow Senators, the move is becoming an increasingly familiar one for embattled Republicans. Sen. David Vitter (La.) and former Sens. Ted Stevens (Alaska) and Larry Craig (Idaho), while facing scandals of their own, went before the Conference to discuss their respective situations.”

Good Morning…

Prayers go out to the families of victims that perished in the train collision on yesterday evening just outside of Washington, Dc. Also with the young student Neda’s family in Iran that lost her life by a mad mans bullet and lastly with the family of Ed McMahon who was the last to symbolize my era in late night television viewing with the Johnny Carson Show.

Politics—where is Gov. Sanford? Why does the Gov. of South Carolina keep disappearing on occasion without knowledge of his where a bout’s.  I mean what’s up with that?  His wife can’t locate him and he doesn’t show up on fathers’ day? That is strange indeed. He is running for a national office and disappears at the drop of a hat without warning? Not very responsible I would think.

Stimulus package—the stimulus package hasn’t had time to get out yet. The republicans are salivating in hopes that the American public grows inpatient. They are banking on the fact that Americans are not very good at waiting for anything. Actually a larger number have short memories. The President explained that the stimulus money would not reach Americans for months. It took enough time for both houses to get the package approved.

The polling of Americans by the media is irresponsible especially when the facts aren’t placed beside the numbers. We aren’t satisfied unless we are whining and miserable. I imagine the majority of those that are growing impatient are the people that voted for George Bush in both elections. Hell they deserve to wait even when things do improve.

Does anyone remember the 2000 election when came on national television and said that Dick Cheney was fine…he hadn’t suffered a heart attack? He looked straight into the camera and told a bald faced lie.

I knew he lied when he did it. But it amazed me. I couldn’t for the life of me understands who voted for him and why. He “looked” like a liar that had to assure the public that a then more experienced “statesman”, one Dick Cheney was not gravely ill to the point that he would be left running this country alone.

Come on Media…start reporting the actual facts. Unemployment will reach 10%. The stimulus package will not take effect until months from now and GM will emerge stronger. We already know this so the spin can stop.

Diane Feinstein (sp) get your s*** together or else you all won’t be in office four more years. Cut the s***, America wants HCR let your special interest groups  go, do your jobs and pass Health Care Reform. I don’t trust you anyway….

Impatient Americans—Irresponsible Graham and McCain

When will the recession end?  When will the job market improve?  What will happen to GM?  What will happen in Iran?  We have come to expect quick, easy answers and when the answers are not quick and easy, it is an opportunity for the (not-so-loyal) conservatives to be irresponsible and complain.

Yesterday one person did not think the notion of “stupid pills” was so funny. Maybe irresponsible fits better.  Sticking to the facts, Obama is getting daily and sometimes hourly briefings on what is happening in Iran.  Graham and McCain get CNN.  George Will, Richard Lugar, and Peggy Noonan were spot on target.

So, what will happen in Iran?  I’m not sure, but the people I am listening to are Richard Engel and Iranian nationals.  What is happening behind the scenes may be where the real action is.  I haven’t heard the name “Rafsanjani” for years, and when I did, it was time to pay attention. The real action may be between Khamenei and Rafsanjani. This is undercover stuff that the CIA, or operatives from other countries are watching. And this is what Obama knows and the rest of us wonder about.

I expect strikes and peaceful demonstrations to last for months, until the Ayatollahs come to a compromise.  Khamenei is being quite cautious.  He returned Rafsanjani’s eldest daughter and relatives.  Police are using tear gas and night sticks instead of firing real bullets into the crowd. They do not want any more martyrs.   Moussavi wants disruption without loss of life.  The resolution will likely be a compromise. The question is, “Will the reformers accept the compromise?”  Who knows?

Leftovers & Take Out…

Is it relevant to know what this new healthcare system will or will not offer?  The phrase being kicked around is reasonable high-quality haelthcare which can mean anything.  I want some specifics.  For a reasonable premium (or more likely tax) what are my benefits?  Will I be able to get elective surgery when I want it?  Will it cost me more in premiums (taxes) for this service?  Otherwise, to reduce costs I would tell you to go and take two aspirin as that would be more COST EFFECTIVE than a $4000 operation.
Alan, NJ (Sent Monday, June 22, 2009 10:41 AM)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks Alan & I agree about needing answers regarding  what the new healthcare system and what it will or will not offer.  I believe the phrase that I’ve been kicking around is ‘Affordable Quality Healthcare for all American Citizens’ and I know you’re intelligent enough to comprehend the translation! Other’s in your party are not so fortunate – (son)!
I also agree that the President needs to start taking it directly to the people and answer some of these questions including how we’re going to pay for it – EVEN – if it means having to admit that Yes taxes will go up! Put the facts out there and then we can debate them… all this conjecture is not getting us anywhere!
But the BIGGER problem I have with the right is the rhetoric & scare tactics (sorry but after all that’s all they have these days) like the insurance police knocking on your door… ala Michael Steele… (that one was a CLASSIC)  or this rationing  on healthcare BS!  Throwing all this around accomplishes nothing but preying on low information voters (ooops I mean the ‘base’).
And about getting elective surgery when you want it… I don’t know of many people other than the plastic surgery junkies that elect to under go the knife just for the hell of it!
Richard Wolffe’s book Renegade is excellent. Some of the stories are priceless.  I expect it to be on the NYT best seller list…if it isn’t already.
I haven’t watched David Gregory for months now…regardless of who he has on. I agree with Feisty on most things, and would be OK with Lawrence O…but Chuck is still the next Tim.
Ron Indiana (Sent Monday, June 22, 2009 10:28 AM)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks Ron… agreed Renegade is a MUST read!  Couldn’t put it down Sunday! I believe it’s already on the NYT bestseller list - #7 I think last time I checked…
And I too use to think Chuck was the next Tim – even said so to my husband last summer after Tim’s untimely passing!  But… I don’t know… ever since he’s gotten his promotion he’s not the same guy he was last year.  Keep in mind I still like him – just don’t think he has the ‘edge’ he used too.  That’s just my opinion!  Now you got Mark & Domenico doing all the daily hard work around here!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question for you Patrick, KY and the rest of you who don’t support our current President…
More than one of you has claimed that Jr. Bush was a terrible president and you didn’t support him or his policies…
Well my question to you then is where the hell have you been the last 8 years?
I did a little research and you certainly weren’t here at FR telling all of us just how bad things were & what a disaster Bushie Boy was? Where was all the outrage & opposition then?  ***crickets***
Yet you come here daily with your spoon fed right wing talking points and continue to pi$$ and moan about our current President!
Isn’t ironic?  Dontcha think?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Glad to see they’ve found the missing SC Governor – more of the good ol family values from the country first party… clearing his mind & hiking took precedence over spending Father’s Day with his family!

Yup… that little stunt is sure to win him the Father of the Year Award!
The president is an "occasional" smoker?

Does that mean one or two packs a day?

I don't know of anyone who smokes two cigarettes a day or only on the weekends.

And does he walk outside the White House to smoke in the Rose Garden .. with security around him?
"“To those who, here in Washington, who’ve grown accustomed to sky-is-falling prognoses and the certainties that we cannot get this done...."

That's so damn funny coming from crisis crisis, act not, crisis crisis President. Talk about fear mongering.
The "news" conference today is Obama hail mary pass to try and salavage health care and cap&trade. Both bills are DOA in Congress. "News" conference is in quotes because the presser is nothing but another staged event by Obama. The questions went out from the White House to the appropriate newsies yesterday, and they will be called on in the prescribed order determined by the White House. No surprises will be tolerated, so Fox won't be called on. Obama will look fine, he's rehearsed it several times to be sure and  he'll read the teleprompter as well as he always has. But it won't matter, health care and cap&trade are nearly dead, and this won't help any.
To Chuck Todd/Joe Scarborough:

I heard you both on the Morning Joe-ke program this morning lamenting the fact that President Obama has not told us all just how much healthcare is going to cost.

Why are you expecting a cost for something that hasn’t even been written yet?  Is that realistic?

Weren’t you two a part of the chorus of media pundits telling us all that President Obama shouldn’t even try to reform healthcare at all, because all he should focus on “the economy” and “the banks? (Like healthcare isn’t a major part of the economy?)

Now you pivot from that to the right wing talking point of “How are we going to pay for it?”

I’ll tell you how we are going to pay for it – we are going to subsidies for corporations, we are going to cut subsidies to other countries, and we are going to use OUR TAX MONEY that we are ALREADY PAYING to take care of OUR NEEDS before we ride out on our white horses to save the world.

P.S. Chuck, I was really disappointed that you and the rest of the “panel” on Morning Joe-ke sat by while Joe Scarborough called President Obama “a liar” for saying that healthcare reform will save money in the long run.

Do you agree Chuck? Your silence seemed to indicate that you do.

It seems that the same media pundits who helped lie to the American people for the last 8 years of the Bush Administration, and during the two year Presidential campaign, now feel they can call the President of the United States a “liar” anytime they don’t agree with him . . . yet another strike against the integrity of the “corporate media”. Everytime I think you folks can’t get any lower – you sink to the occasion.
If you're talking sex, don't leave out the champ ... Slick Willie ... and the chump ... John Edwards.
Obama had a chance to have some meaningful actions and words about Iran, but the time has passed. Having a moderate government in Iran would solve most of the problems in the middle east, but Obama has missed the opportunity. Iran supports and finances the terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan, funds Hamas and the terrorism based out Syria, partners with North Korea, and is the #1 threat to Israel. And yet Obama just wrings his nicotine stained hands wondering what he should do. Too bad America doesn't have a real leader that would have taken on the tough problems of the world.
Obama calls Time Out???

Why - is spending trillions we dont have to help his friends with his "no-bid stimulus" contracts making him tired or dizzy?

When Bush awarded "no-bid" contracts for military contractors - we all screamed (including me).

And yet, when BoBo gives TRILLIONS in "no-bid" grants, you lefties say - NOTHING!!!

For example:  BoBo gave nearly 1/2 million dollars to a "friend" on a "no-bid" grant to study "why men dont like wearing condoms".

Why cant all of us bid on this contract???
I bet even you lefties that love BoBo could find that answer for less money.

But, its not about stimulating the economy...
Its about stimulating BoBo's friends bank accounts...
Why, you ask - simple...
They donate back to him!!!

Pay-To-Play the Obama Way

The more things change - the more they remain the same!
First Read; He's {Obama} been on the defensive on health care, Iran, the economy, and the deficit.

Which begs the question, just what has Obama been successful at?
NO Time OUTS!....Job, Jobs, Jobs...
                Health Care Where, when and WHY!

The sands of time rule the wind...
The promises made are less made every week...
There is no time for time outs..
and quit saying everything fell apart not on your watch ex-Senator Obama..you were there too..and the whole world is watching how the change in Washington will happen...?
*** We’ll always have Cairo:
The GOP are a bunch of saber rattling old farts that need to sit their asses down. They're attemps at goading the President are poor at best because the majority of the public support his stance.

Yes we can yes we will and they may as well give up their pet projects to get it done or they wont get re-elected. We gave them the opportunity to stop filibusters by giving them both house majorities. Now they can sit on their asses and forget how they got to Washington if they want. They will definately know how they'll get the hell out. HCA NOW!
I reject and denounce the analysis that the Obama Administration had a "tough week" and are "on the defensive".

What evidence can you provide to support that?

Other than the attempt by the media to spin a CBO scoring of an unfinished bill as the final cost for healthcare reform and the treasonous Republican Party implying that the President is not being "tough enough" with Iran, I would think that: -

- mulitiple polls showing 70+ percent of Americans WANT the government to sponsor a public health insurance option

- the Republican Party's approval ratings being at an all time low

- the populations of several Islamic countries, including Iran, taking steps towards democracy WITHOUT the US playing the role of "puppet master"

are all GREAT developments for the Obama Administration . . . unless you are in the media and you need conflict.

P.S. If a mid-60s approval rating is "coming back down to earth", that works for me.
Oh, don't tell us that Obama is using those cost cutting numbers from the drug companies to plug into his "savings" column for his health care plan? If there was ever some funny money out there, that is it. Also, if the drug companies are charging $80 billion less over 10 years, where do you think they are going to make the cuts? Because unlike the government, who can print money, they actually have to make money to stay in business. My guess is the drug companies will cut R&D, you know the thing that comes up with new and better drugs to help all of us.
You're out of timeouts Obama, except for a 20 second injury timeout. But no one sees how that will help anything.
The Republican Party often uses the analogy of the government being run like a family.

Here's a question: How many families do you know that would let their own kids go without healthcare so they can pay for some kids in other countries to have healthcare?

Anyone?

First things first America . . . before we can help our friends all over the world secure democracy, defeat Aids, and feed their hungry . . . we have to take care of our FELLOW AMERICANS and OURSELVES.

Why isn't that common sense.

We HAVE the money to pay for healthcare, we are just going to have to STOP paying for lots of other things that we would love to do but can no longer afford.

Pretty basic, no?

That's what happens when you elect a community organizer to be president. The man just freezes when he can't stage an event and has to think on his feet.
We as Americans know very little about Iranian culture and the culture of ruling mullahs.

We need to stay out of it and Americans need to stopping pushing and whining.

We are being our usual nosy, aggressive selves. We are supposed to helpful by being kind and encompassing—not nasty and devisive!! By denouncing we could have gotten MORE PEOPLE KILLED!!!

Obama has a huge foreign relations staff, his major in college was international relations and the constitution, he has lived in a muslim nation and he is smarter than all of us put together.

Could you just trust the man?—he and his staff know what they are doing.

And further more: Remember John McCain and Geogria? Remember the stolen election from Al Gore? Remember the KKK?

How would you like the world to get in our business and call us out!!

Apparently you’re buying into the sky-is-falling.   "Yes we can" and Yes we will 72% of America says US will.       The right wing dings have nothing but contempt, envy, and manufactured lies for the President and will use any chance they can to smear the President. I’m so glad the old Alzheimer’s McCain and Moosehead Palin did not win or else we’d be full throttle in WWIII.

President Obama has shown such skill at handling tough situations, and a bunch of whiny repugnant ones are the least of his worries.  I am glad that Obama is calling a timeout and playing the news conference bully pulpit card this morning.  Always so refreshing to hear our great superhero speak, especially after hearing the party of superzeroes whine baby whine.  After a tough week he's going to push the reset button and take charge of the narrative.

I'm glad that President Obama is saying Yes We Can to the public option for health care reform.  We can't let the private medical industry ripoff conartists dictate to us what kind of reform we get, we've had enough of their lies.  It's also exciting that climate change is making it's way quickly through Congress now.  I sure hope we get to see the evil elephants whine baby whine when climate change passes.  Time for the cheapskates to ante up to pay for this much needed climate change bill.

Have the repugnant ones found their missing wayward governor?  What a total jerk that he disappeared over Father's Day weekend without telling his wife, that's not the kind of family values one brags about.  I'm sure his mistress knew where he was all weekend, so hopefully the media will catch up to her to ask.

Just Stay Lost Sanford!
I'm tired of the hearing American say how crappy the "nationalized" healthcare system is in Canada. I live in Canada and from a citizen who uses the system it is NOT crappy! I do NOT have to wait to see my doctor or for procedures. All the big and expensive costs are paid for by the government and I have supplemental healthcare from the job to fill in the gaps that I pay pennies for ($200 a year) and it covers, disability pay, long-term care expenses, critical illness lump sums, 100% prescription medication and private room in hospitals along with a host of other services like physiotherapy, massages, etc. Talk to someone who lives in Canada before trashing the system!

Not the Republican Party?

Not the health insurance and pharmaceutical industry?

Not the media?

Just himself . . .

Alrighty then.
Just curious...does anyone look at the details underlying the polls you cite?  Every liberal is continually mentioning the NYT poll that says 72% want a public option.  According to the details, this poll sampled twice as many Obama supporters as McCain supporters.  Did Obama win the election 53 - 47 or was it 67-33?  How do you explain that?  And also, how do you explain how other polls show far less support for a public option?

What it means is that Obama only smokes for 30% of the time during the day. The other 70% of the time, he is "not smoking". The White House likes to focus on the positive, and 70% is a very good number, at least to the White House spin squad.
What Is It About Richard Nixon I Wonder -

Per MSNBC.com
WASHINGTON - Another window is opening on Richard Nixon's presidency with the release of hundreds of tape recordings and thousands of documents from that time.

The latest materials from the Nixon Presidential Library, to be released Tuesday, will offer a glimpse into fateful days of the Watergate scandal as well as the waning days of the U.S. war in Vietnam. Nixon's Cold War diplomacy, the U.S. cease-fire with Hanoi and the administration's reaction to the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion are included in the release.

The tapes, to be put online, are from January and February 1973. That period covers the conviction of burglars whose break-in at Democratic headquarters precipitated the cover-up that eventually unraveled Nixon's presidency.
____________
I am so fascinated with this man and I don't know why. But I'm anxious to see what is learned from the new documents.  I never hated him, even during the Watergate years. I felt sorry for him. Perhaps we will learn something new about the break-in and whose brain child this was. My money is on G. Gordon Liddy. That guy was/is nuts.

It's too bad someone didn't just come forward at the get-go and take responsibility.  Cover-ups are a bad business in our government.
I think there is more to this story of Stanford than taking a hike.This is not resonable for no one to not know his where abouts, not even his wife. More will come to light about this.
Given the constant right wing attacks on absolutely everything he has done or said, and given that we are in the worst recession in 70 years, I think it is remarkable that President Obama's approval rating is still in the 60s!

As far as the stimulus, the right has been very effective in whining about how it is wasting money and not creating jobs. Yet just this last weekend, I drove up Cicero in Chicago and there was one of those nifty signs showing that the resurfacing of Cicero is being funded by the stimulus plan. To anyone that has driven around Chicago, you know that our roads are in great need of improvement so the stimulus plan is just the kind of thing we needed! It IS creating jobs and it is improving our infrastructure.

Imagine how much worse unemployment would be if we hadn't passed a stimulus plan? From where I sit, it is creating jobs, improving infrastructure, funding important programs, and improving people's perception of the state of our economy.

And the fact that 52% of people think it is helping is pretty remarkable, given that the right has been waging an all out war against it for over four months!
Thoughts and prayers to Red line passengers, victims and families.
--------
I don't care if the President still smokes, it doesn't change the need to reduce marketing cigarettes to our youth.
--------
I figured out that Sanford is probably on a strategerizing trip with Governor Palin.  They are figuring out ways to undermine their state legislatures and reject stimulus money.  It's so obvious.

I am not black, so I can’t speak to why blacks don’t like him.  I don’t like him because he is worse than a puppet on a string.  My main objection to him is that when in a position of authority, he abused that authority.  He was degrading to subordinate women who had the misfortune of needing their jobs so badly they couldn’t report his offenses.  And when he was called upon to tell the truth about his offenses under oath, he refused to do so.  And even further than that, he allowed Anita Hill to be vilified.  He showed me that he is at best a Coward and at worst a dishonest snake willing to let an innocent victim of his ‘sense of humor’ take additional crap by his party.  To have him sit on the highest court and hear cases such as Lilly Ledbetter’s and have him return the rote, party line of how it might retrospectively affect commerce (those he actually represents), well as a woman that sickens me.  I am sure we can find commendable things about all human beings; but we can’t just magically erase those offenses that personally affect us.  I see an opportunity to remind people that Clarence Thomas and John McCain made their infamous ‘indiscretions’ (inappropriate office humor and Keating Five scandals) while they were in their 50’s.  We aren’t talking youthful indiscretions; but rather entitled character flaws that come from not being held accountable for their actions.

To turn your argument on its head, why does the right wing hate Sonia Sotamayor?  Isn’t hers also a ‘classic’ American story?
Nashville_fan "I reject and denounce the analysis that the Obama Administration had a "tough week" and are "on the defensive".  What evidence can you provide to support that? "

For starters, the complete collapse of Obama two major legislative items for health care and the environment. His foreign policy failures to have nothing to say about anything in Iran. The markets collapsing under his wathc again. No jobs created. Quite a few failures from Obama, and you don't even have to look very hard.
Distractions and diversions. Give them bread and circuses.

This is just more celebrity president fluff to distract the masses from their misery. Unemployment over 10%, gas over $3/gal, manufacturing sector in worst slump since end of WWII, April housing starts lowest on record. Hey, Hope and Change is here.

The people and the press must hold Obama accountable. The “Blame Bush For Everything” excuse is wearing thin. Both Democrats AND Republicans owe the American people some answers on where the over one trillion dollar TARP and stimulus money has gone.
It has been almost 8 months since Paulson and crew told us if we don’t allocate this money immediately there will be another Great Depression. Well? We are in the deepest recession since the early 80’s. Transparency my eye, Obama is a total fraud.
If we're talking sex and inviting Bill Clinton, don't leave out Newt Gingrich.  For that matter, don't leave out Mark Foley, Larry Craig, or David Vitter.  Talk about a 360 degree perspective. Democrats are rank amateurs in the game of moral hypocrisy, while republicans seem to have all the bases covered.
I'd say Mark Sanford's chances to be president in 2012 just took a hit. Even if he's found alive, he still must face bipartisan outrage for literally abandoning his state and family for nearly a week.

Bad Moon Rising:

Hodo and the gang of fossils are saber ratling still and for your information I smoke and don't plan on quiting anytime soon. I chose to do so. Just as it's your right to use cologne, over eat and drink no doubt. Every one has a vice or something that they do that annoy others.

I smoke to keep calm...it is an excellent way to whine down...
On your reporting of Iran, you neglect to mention that prominent GOP statesmen, journalists and senators have sided with Obama's approach. These responsible voices include Peggy Noonan and George Will, Nicholas Burns and Senator Lugar. But you would rather report about Bomb,Bomb McCain and his sidekick HissyFit Lindsey Graham . Of course , John McCain also proposed a massive tax cut for the stimulus , so we can expect him to want more of the failed Bush policies.
Gov. Sanford takes a vacation, a couple days off, and the liberals have an absolute spasm over it. I guess that's what happens when you hate as much as they do.
If you're talking sex, don't leave out the champ ... Slick Willie ... and the chump ... John Edwards.

Difference here is at least they had affairs with woman… not trying to solicit sex in airport bathrooms…

And before the yelling starts… I have nothing against Gays… some of my best friends are gay… and I support them 110%

What I’m against is the homophobic wrinkled party of male – stale & pale being so hypocritical of the Gay & Lesbian community when they’re nothing more than in the closet themselves! Brought to you by the party of  do as I say not as I do!
Americans do need a "time out" because the anti-health care chatter is nonstop 24/7.  72% of all Americans want a public health care option, 50% of republicans want it.  That said, the Hill seems to be unaware of their own constituents voices particularly the Senate.  I've said it before as have others.  We manage to find billions each month for the Iraq war yet we argue about finding money for the medical health of Americans.  There are some republicans working hard on health care but for the most part their constant "no, we can't do it" reminds me of the little train, "I think I can, I think I can" moral story from childhood.  Try harder to find a way, and "yes, we can".  Fired up, ready to go!

I'm no economist but $80 billion in drug savings does reduce the cost to the government.  Remember the Bush administration failed to negotiate drug costs for the prescription drug legislation--that failure has cost the government and taxpayers big money. The White House shouldn't have to explain that.

Anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking knows that it is a constant battle for several years and even for life.  If Pres Obama goes out on the balcony (picture "The West Wing's" Bartlett) once in awhile, let him--he's got more stress in an hour than most of us have in a year.  Having been surprised reading on this site that Laura Bush smoked, where did she go?

Senator Ensign may have more trouble than just the affair.  Increasing his mistress's salaries immediately after the affair started, hiring the son could require an investigation because the money was paid with republican funds.  Not sure this will go away anytime soon.
"Privately, the White House points to the Cairo speech quite often. If he can't answer in the affirmative for any of these questions, doesn't that mean there should be consequences for the regime in its dealings with the U.S. and the world?" - First Read

During the campaign, when President Obama said that America should talk to our enemies, the media blasted him for being "naive".

When President Obama goes overseas and speaks, the media says he is on an "apology tour".

When President Obama went to Cairo, the media said "Who does he think he is, President of the World?"

And NOW you wanna know what "consequences" there should be for Iran and why the President doesn't do MORE in Iran? Talk about HYPOCRISY!

I thought we were supposed to just ignore them?

I thought we were supposed to let Israel bomb them?

Hey geniuses - President Obama is not calling the shots in Iran . . . he has said all he needs to say and all this second guessing and hand wringing is just a bunch of political VULTURES using FOREIGN POLICY to try to make themselves look important.

Pathetic.

You might want to research the government system used by the Republic of Iran. The true leader of the country is Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and he is not elected. He is in power for life.

So even if Mousavi won, there wouldn't be much change in the way Iran was governed. Are you aware of the fact that all Presidential candidates are chosen by the council of guardians? This is a group of religious people, have of which were chosen by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The people that understand Iran and its government all agree that President Obama is striking the right tone and taking the right actions. We had eight years of cowboy politics with the US throwing constant barbs and insults. It resulted in no change in Iran and only served to solidify the position of those that hate us.
“I want to emphasize that this isn't something that either staff or Mrs. Sanford is concerned about,” the governor’s chief spokesman said in a statement. “As we said earlier today, it isn't unusual for the governor to be out of pocket for several days after the legislative session. We knew he would be difficult to reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently.”
------------------------------------------------------
Apparently, he didn't establish a clear chain of command prior to leaving, and didn't bother to "check in" with his children on Father's Day.  How exactly is the party of "personal responsibility" and "family values" going to spin that?

Now, if Sanford is having personal problems: then by all means, he should be doing what he needs to do to address them.  What his constituents don't need, however, is some BS about him "hiking the Appalachian trail" to "clear his head".  It gives him the aura of instability- NOT helpful if he was hoping for a 2012 run.  First Ensign, now Sanford- will anyone be left to enter a GOP primary?
Yes let's talk sex as in sex scandal.  It's so funny watching the party of false family values have to apologize for so many sex scandals while they tout how they are so behind protectiung their false limited view of marriage.  But that's what happens to the party whose brains are powered by Viagra.  I'm looking forward to Lost Sanford having to make a sex scandal confession, I'm sure that hiking and clearing his head weren't the only things he did on the trail.  Why elese disappear and not tell his wife, she'd better get a good divorce attorney right quick.  He can kiss any national aspirations down the drain as he'll now always be dogged with the Lost label.

President Obamsa's Cairo speech has had more of a positive effect in the Middle East than all of Clueless George's efforts put together.  I'm glad that he is the voice of reason and restraint, so different from the repugnant ones like Ike and Nixon who meddled around in Iran's affairs and got the people mad at our country.  I'm glad that saner voices in the evil elephant's party are battling with the chickenhawks like McNasty and Graham who just don't know what they're tlaking about.  They aren't thinking through what is best for the Iranian protesters, they're just dopes of nope who always oppose the president.

Still disgusted that the repugnant ones in our state are rigging voter registration, the so called Young Politicians.  Yep this group od aspiring repugnant nones are taught early on how to rig voter registration and that cheating is the standard operating procedure for their party of sore losers.  No wonder they make such a stink about ACORN because they think that since they cheat that the Democrats must be cheating too.  Time to ban this group known as Young Cheating Politicians.

In Obama We Trust!
Just Shut Up McNasty, You Lost!
Absolutely Nothing:
After only five months into the office he has saved our auto industries, the repubs didn't want to give them s***. Chrysler has been sold and GM has satisfied it's 250 million debt in bankruptcy and are starting to rhire employees.

The TARP money that Bush and Poulson attempted to "nationalize" the banks with have been tracked down and returned to the tax payers with interest and we are successfully working with the Milddele East. We will have Health Care Reform.

What have you done for yourself lately????

There is no time for time outs..
and quit saying everything fell apart not on your watch ex-Senator Obama..you were there too..and the whole world is watching how the change in Washington will happen...?
<><><><><<><><><><>><<>><<><><><

And just how many vetoes do you remember the Bushwhacker gave in the then Congress controlled by the Republicans?
Take a little time to refresh your memory.
FR: "Do you think Republicans would be less critical if Obama had simply stated what he said in his Cairo speech about freedom IN GENERAL in the Middle East?"
--------------------------------------

The obvious answer to that question is "NO". You people know that the Repubs will attack Obama no matter what he does and you serve as the megaphone for the "nontroversies" that they manufacture at a rate of about one per week. The incestuous relationship between the lunatic fringe of the far right Republicans and the corporate "liberal" media makes every week a tough week for the president.
*** I’m a joker, I’m a smoker… : One thing the media seemed to make crystal clear yesterday and this morning is that the president is still an occasional smoker.

Whats the big deal anyway. I smoke, don't want to quit. I walk daily, I lift weights, I have an all natural diet and drink plenty of fruit juices high in vitamin C. Smoking releaves stress, he won't be able to quit until he's ready too. Do you people know how many Presidents and First Ladies smoked, drinked and indulged in drugs.

At least he's honest about it. Let's not start being self righteous now...
The President is to speak today from the rose garden. I am anxious to hear what he has to say. Some are so used to instant gratification that we must have it all and we must have it now that they aren't willing to wait longer for stimulus to kick in even though they have been told over and over and over again that it won't be until late Summer early Fall before any noticable results start showing up. We have some of that money working now but it is too little to be making any big splash that would be noticed by the MSM or many in the public. Healthcare reform is being discussed more than just about any bill in the last couple of decades including Hillary's from during the 90's. It takes time to do that stuff but we must get it done. I believe the President will address that too. We shall see. He has spoken to us more in his first half year in office than his predecessor did in his first few years. But then he speaks English where his predecessor spoke gibbrish.
Only a few more hours until we get to hear our great superhero President speak.  He always gives us an uplifting experience as he so eloquently articulates his position on matters.  It is so gratifying to hear him after listening to 8 years of bozobrains bush torturing the English language and the truth.  Yes We Can have Climate Change and Health Care Reform with the Public Option.

I so enjoyed Keith's Worst Persons in the World segment last night.  What a jerk that Davis Witch is in Missouri who wants to cut out feeding poor and hungry children during the summer, and she's on some committee to help children.  She says that they should go work for McDonald's, yeah the dizzy witch must think that McDonald's jobs grow on trees.  I hope that Clara from KC goes after her on the local level and that soon that wicked witch is gone so she can't screw over the poor children for her pathetic political ends.

When I first heard that the repugnant ones had lost that idiot governor Sanford I figured that the evangelical christian lunatic fringe would tout that he got disappeared in the Rapture and that God had taken him up to Heaven to become Disciple Mark, his trusty right hand who would ensure that no one who ever collected unemployment benefits would be allowed into the Chosen Few.  But nah now we find out he's taking a hike in the mountains to clear his head and didn't bother to tell his wife.  Yeah some family values that is but the only reason for him to keep mum to his wife is that he's got something, or more likely someone, to hide.  Bet he wasn't sleeping alone in his sleeping bag on the trail.  I'm looking forward to his confession when he comes back.

Stay Lost Sanford!
In Obama We Trust!

Nashville_fan (Sent Tuesday, June 23, 2009 9:36 AM)

A lie is a lie....no matter who tells it. Yes even your beloved savior Obama lies. He is not Jesus Christ, but I guess some of you haven't realized that yet.

You lie on here everyday to push your viewpoint.
