First thoughts: Sanford's tango

*** Sanford’s tango: Well, it turns out that South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) wasn’t hiking the Appalachian Trail after all. Instead, he was in -- get this -- Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here’s South Carolina’s State newspaper: "Gov. Mark Sanford arrived in the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport Wednesday morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina.” Sanford "said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money… Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline… When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, 'I don't know.'" But "Sanford later said 'in fairness to his staff,' he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial… It was a long session and I needed a break.'" Our question: Who goes to one of the world's most romantic cities in the world alone? That's going to be the question that nags at many folks following the Sanford story. And since there have been misleading statements for the last three days on this issue, who is going to believe the full story from Sanford now? Don’t cry for me, Argentina…

Video: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford tells a local newspaper he was actually in Argentina, not hiking the Appalachian Trail, as his staff had said Monday.

*** A 2012 curse? Here’s a quick quiz. Who has had the tougher last five months: A) President Obama, B) congressional Republicans, or C) GOPers who might be considering a White House bid in 2012? If you’re answer is C), you’re probably right. Let’s start with Mark Sanford, who has inspired a new phrase -- “I went hiking on the Appalachian Trail” -- to describe any kind of mysterious disappearance. (Wife’s question: “Honey, where have you been the past couple of days?” Husband’s answer: “I went hiking on the Appalachian Trail.”) Of course, that probably will change now that Sanford was in Buenos Aires. Next, there’s Sarah Palin, who has had a rough last several months; after all, when your spat with a late-night comedian has been the highlight of your 2009, you’ve had a tough year. Then there’s Bobby Jindal, who has since stepped back from the spotlight after his dreadful response to Obama’s address to Congress. John Ensign dipped his toes in the Iowa waters, but then confessed last week to having an affair. And Newt Gingrich got in trouble -- and didn’t do himself any favors among Latino voters -- when he called Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Even the person who was supposed to be the moderate in the 2012 field, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, has gone to work for … the Obama administration.

*** Lesson -- don’t act like you’re running: By process of elimination, the potential 2012 candidate who has probably had the best five months is Mitt Romney, who has delivered a few hard-hitting speeches at Obama but has largely stayed out of the spotlight. And that very well could be the lesson to this story. After all, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton did their best to stay away from the presidential buzz in 2005-2006. We didn’t even know Obama was thinking about a presidential bid until right before the midterms, and Clinton didn’t set foot in Iowa and New Hampshire until after she announced she was running for president in January 2007. On the other hand, John Edwards was running for president as soon as the 2004 contest ended, and that didn’t work out so great for him…

*** Obama’s tougher rhetoric: Turning to the man who hopes there isn’t a 2012 curse on the Democratic side, President Obama covered a lot of ground during his press conference yesterday -- on health care, energy, even his smoking habit. But the issue that dominated, of course, was Iran. He unleashed his harshest rhetoric, saying he was “appalled and outraged” by the violence there. But Obama also maintained those new words shouldn't be interpreted as new policy. “Track what I’ve been saying right after the election. I said that we had profound concerns about the nature of the election… As soon as violence broke out, in fact, in anticipation of potential violence, we were very clear in saying that violence was unacceptable.” And he denied that his new tougher rhetoric was a response to criticism from Republicans such as John McCain. “John McCain has genuine passion about many of these international issues, and I think that all of us share a belief that we want justice to prevail,” he said. “But only I’m president of the United States.” Finally, he clearly didn’t want to publicly make any threat of consequences to the Iranian government.

Video: In a midday news conference President Obama says he’s “appalled and outraged” by the actions taken by Iran’s government after a disputed election. NBC’s Chuck Todd reports.

*** Iranian diplomacy: Behind the scenes, there's been some news on the diplomatic front. On the record, the president clearly is doing his best to keep his options open regarding Iran. As the Washington Post's Balz points out, this president always finds a way to give himself wiggle room -- no matter the issue. And that’s clearly the case with Iran. Also, an interesting report in the Washington Times about possible communication between the U.S. (via the Swiss) to the Supreme Leader in Iran (pre-election) sparked this response from a senior administration official, who wouldn't confirm the story: "We have indicated a willingness to talk for a long time and have sought to communicate with the Iranians in a variety of ways. We have made it clear that any real dialogue -- multilateral or bilateral -- needed to be authoritative. Not gonna get into the specifics of our different ways of communicating, but there is an outstanding direct request from the Perm 5 plus 1 that was made on April 8th. The Iranians have yet to respond to that." Couple this with NBC News' Libby Leist's reporting that a State Department official says any BILATERAL diplomatic outreach is now "on ice" and it's clear whatever policy the Obama administration wanted to pursue with Iran has now changed to something that's more multi-lateral.

*** Health care day: The focus of Obama’s Wednesday is on health care. At 2:00 pm ET, he discusses the issue with Govs. Jennifer Granholm (D), Jim Douglas (R), Jim Doyle (D), Mike Rounds (R), and Christine Gregoire (D). Then he participates in a televised town hall on health care, which ABC will televise beginning at 10:00 pm ET. Of course, Obama made plenty of news on the subject in yesterday’s press conference. He suggested, as he has before, that reducing health-care costs is a higher priority than ensuring universal coverage; he advocated for a public/government option to compete with private insurance, but implied that it was negotiable (again, wiggle room); and he issued his strongest challenge to private insurers who are worrying that a government option will drive them out of business. “If private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality health care, if they tell us that they're offering a good deal, then why is it that the government -- which they say can't run anything -- suddenly is going to drive them out of business?” he asked. “That's not logical.” However, Obama did seem to struggle a bit when asked a question about how he could ensure Americans that they would keep their health-care plans if there was a government option. But he replied that businesses are ALREADY dropping their plans…

*** Targeting DiFi: By the way, for those in the chattering class who somehow think health-care reform is in trouble, remember that there is a very sophisticated campaign apparatus that is in place to support the president on this issue. Just ask Sen. Dianne Feinstein about that apparatus. After her comments on Sunday suggesting the president didn't have the votes for health care, she found herself under the rhetorical siege by MoveOn and AFSCME's Gerald McEntee. Is this a warning to other wavering Senate Dems?

*** Just askin’: Was anyone else surprised at the president's downcast rhetoric on the stimulus? He seemed to side with the public polls on this issue, admitting that the recovery act wasn't getting money out fast enough. In addition, he volunteered that he was not pleased how the mortgage assistance program was working. Congressional Republicans will likely attempt to use his surprisingly blunt stimulus talk against him politically. The president is counting on straight talk to buy him more time.

*** A planted questioner? Perhaps the most controversial moment at yesterday’s press conference occurred when Nico Pitney of the Huffington Post got the second question and asked the president a question he had received from an Iranian. Some in the media wondered if Pitney was a planted questioner, and it does appear that the White House wanted him to ask his question. The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank wrote, “The use of planted questioners is a no-no at presidential news conferences, because it sends a message to the world -- Iran included -- that the American press isn't as free as advertised.” Politico originally said it was a “clearly coordinated” exchange. Pitney later said he was never promised a question, and Arianna Huffington responded that some in the media “can't seem to understand why the president would have the nerve to call on someone whose Iran coverage has been praised throughout the media, from Charlie Rose to Andrew Sullivan to the Economist.” The ultimate irony to all this? The president didn't really answer the question -- specifically the part that asked him to lay out the conditions at which he'd accept Ahmadinejad's election. (Editor's note: We changed our original headline here from "Planted Question" to "Planted Questioner," because no one is accusing Pitney of asking a planted question.)

What is this, SANFORD's Not-So-Excellent Adventure??
How about those family values on Father's Day.
Palin-Sanford 2012, wouldn't you guys have fun with that!
Chris - IL: He doesn't have a problem admitting when he was wrong or made a mistake.

Barry Obama seems absolutely astonished when someone disagrees with him. He admits nothing when things go wrong. He hardly even realizes that his plans and schemes are failing. He never follows up on his rhetoric, just what are those "tough santions" on North Korea and Iran?

The man is a fraud.
Whining about a planted question at the White House press conference is the best the dopes of nope can come up with?  I liked the question posed by Nico for someone in Iran and it's great that we can witness our technology do something like this where someone in Iran can actually get a chance to ask our president a question and get an answer.  The press conferences now at the White House are far more truthful than the pack of lies and liars of the past 8 years.

How patriotic is it that Lost Sanford would spend his vacation dollars in Argentina instead of here in the good old USA?  We certainly don't want some flake like this in the White House, we had enough of that flake bushwhacker and we don't need a rerun.  We still need to have him answer who he was with, did he have an affair amd when will he dump his overtrusting wife.  Plus it's funny how he's taken the news cycle off of Obama and health care and landed it squarely on how competent or dishonest is this jerk who would abandon his wife and family over Father'sd Day weekend.  Nice way to say I love my family huh?

I would rather have Obama's down rhetoric on the stimulus than the constant lies of the bushwhacker telling us the fundamentals of the economy are strong, right up to the point where the banks collapse.  Give President Obama some credit for being honest with the American people, a refreshing change fromt he past 8 years of lies.

In Obama We Trust!
No questions on Iraq at the press conference. None on Afghanistan. No talk of the war, the war we are spending a $100 billion dollars on during the next two months. It's hardly like those wars are going on at all.
Pat in Boston just a point for your information... Elizabeth Dole is from NORTH Carolina not South Carolina. I know it is sometimes difficult to keep them apart. So Sanford went unannounced to Argentina. I wonder if he was looking at real estate so that when the GOPers get their final boot he'll have some place to go. Aaah, Argentina, that's where some of the Nazis escaped to in order to avoid prosecution for war crimes. Maybe he was an agent for Bush and Cheney, well you get the picture.
When ever the President speaks, stop calling what he has to say rhetoric, it is disrespectful and nations listen to you people and the shame is yours not his. Know what the definition of rhetoric is…Bush spoke it for eight years.

P.S...The government bailed out the automakers and the Government is only involved in Medicare and Medicaid…if I am not mistaken…we pay for that. So what else is the Government involved with.

After all of the disrespect shown to Bush when he was POTUS. The office never change, only the POTUS. Did you ever say anything to your liberal tribe when they were disrespectful to Bush?????I didnt think so. Dont try to strong-arm people into respecting Obama just because he is POTUS. He is but yet a man.

You think this kat is God sent, and his middle name is Jesus last name Christ.

Obama is one man, just like Bush. CONGRESS is where all of your energy should be focused at.

Seeing a lot of partially scraped off "Obama'08" bumper stickers in my area.
How can the GOP be viewed favorably when a best weapon is to seize on the President's HONESTY?
He's right. A relative in Arizona, one of the hardest hit, didn't get help from the mortgage programs.
Only inflexible, obnoxious banks, no govt. help and an increasing ghost town in Buckeye, AZ.
How about doing something about THAT, GOP and AZ senators, et al.? Maybe that would render you useful.

Obama said, “If private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality health care, if they tell us that they're offering a good deal, then why is it that the government -- which they say can't run anything -- suddenly is going to drive them out of business?” he asked. “That's not logical.”

Let's see, if an insurance company loses money, they go out of business.  If the government insurance loses money, eh, who cares, they'll just print some more money.  Sorry, but nobody can compete with that.  As for all of the people saying take the profit out of insurance.  Ok...let's just apply that to everything.  Everyone needs food, so no more profits for grocery stores or farms.  Government can just take those over.  I gotta drive places, so no more profits for automakers or dealers.  Government can take over what they haven't taken over already.  Gotta have gas in my car.  So no profits for them.  Government can take that over too.  Hmmm...where's this going?

And have the liberals decided to stop citing that now debunked CBS-NYT poll that said 70% want the public option?  2 to 1 sampling of Obama voters to McCain voters.  Nice
Ah we're so divided as a country. Why don't the 21% of you who make up the lying hateful liberal pro-regressive party move to one area of the country and leave the rest of us alone. We really can't afford your thieving schemes anymore.

Dave,

I think your party has already come up with that… it’s called Texas!
Clearly Sanford was on some kind of alcohol or narcotic binge. Why everybody is interested if he was alone, like having an affair is the worst that can happen to a politician. When having an affair one is usually at least partially conscious, enough to make a phone call or two to say that he is alive.
I am glad to have Obama as my president.
......................................................
Right now you are the minority.  We're looking forward to Jan 20,2013 as it will be the end of a national error.
no joe, no bo, nj

One point Six Trillion dollars to cover 16 millioin people.  I get that the number is unfathomable, but the sustained debt will break us-and you still won't get the universal coverage you demand-it costs too much.

Medicare is going broke, and the Obama administration's answer to that problem is to increase the problem.

Obama is like a goat that is charging something with his down. He's not really caring what happens, only caring that something does happen. Something will happen all right, just like with his stimulus bill, the American people will get a big bill to pay with no benefit for what they are paying for.
The defination of Rhetoric is:

a. The art or study of using language effectively and persuasively.

b. A treatise or book discussing this art.

2. Skill in using language effectively and persuasively.

a. A style of speaking or writing, especially the language of a particular subject: fiery political rhetoric.

b. Language that is elaborate, pretentious, insincere, or intellectually vacuous: His offers of compromise were mere rhetoric.

4. Verbal communication; discourse

Is this fair in assuming what you all say that when the President speaks...this is a representation of what he has to say?
I'm glad that President Obama is focusing on health care today so that he can get us a public option reform that the dopes of nope refuse to give us because the repugnant ones are indebted to the private insurance industry.  Yeah and guess who pays for all those dollars wasted by the insurance industry lobbying against us, yeah us patients.  We need to stop the medical industry from costing us 1 in 6 dollars of our economy, pretty soon our econoomy would be nothing but the medical industry and we would all be slaves of the insurance executives.

I'm glad that MoveOn and AFSCME are targetting reluctant Democrats in order to bring them into line on health care reform.  DiFi seems to think she can govern our state so it looks like she's figured her Senate career is over.  She has been too much of an appeaser to the bushwhacker and too chicken to take on the repugnant ones.  Sad that this once prud Liberal Democrat lost her courage to stand up to the dopes of nope.

I saw yesterday that in Monterey County there has been a 71% increase in the homeless here in the two years ended January 2009.  Thanks Clueless George for costing our economy so many jobs and people so many homes.  If we allow anymore repugnant ones to be president we'll all become homeless denizens of a welfare state for the rich and greedy.

Who was Lost Sanford with?  Who was his Evita down in Argentina?  What kind of jerk would abandon his wife and family over Father's Day?  Is this how family values work for the repugnant ones?

In Obama We Trust!
Hey no joe . . . your post didn't make any sense.

What does a teaser rate on a mortgage have to do with my high deductible on employer sponsored health insurance?

On a side note, why is the media saying that it is President Obama's fault if employer's decide to drop their current overpriced private for-profit health rationing plans and go with a more affordable public option?

The are already dropping their overpriced for profit health rationing plans NOW, thus adding to the ranks of the working uninsured everyday . . . do any of the bright and shining stars in the media care about that?

Do you no joe?

Concerning Rick Nelson's "Travelin' Man."

I don't think it applies to Gov. Sanford.

I think it applies to Bill Clinton. One in every port.
Sanford's Story, a two-hour made-for-TV docudrama on ABC coming in 2010.

Seriously, he'd better come forth with the WHOLE truth himself and do it quickly.  If, as they have already done, the reporters get the real dirt, he may lose his current job and not need to worry at all about 2012.
why is it that those on medicare or tricare or other gooberment care always warn us about socialized medicine but they never leave the plan and buy their own insurance out here in the "real world" they keep talking about?

Selective Memory, The Bus.  I seem to recall Former President Bush vetoing the Medicare funding bill after the Senate voted on it last June.  You may remember all the hoopla- it was Teddy Kennedy's first appearance back in the Senate after receiving his cancer diagnosis.  Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both returned from a bruising primary fight to cast their votes.  99 out of 100 Senators showed up to vote- only John McCain stayed away.  Yet Bush still vetoed the bill- only to have the veto overridden later that summer.

And we haven't even touched on his attempts to privatize both Medicare and Social Security...

Tune in, the Sanford story has more to come. This family value guy left his four kids on father's day and it turned out he wasn't hiking as first alleged, instead he was in Argentina doing you know what.
FR is probably right, the last months have been hardest for the GOPhers who have been touted as 2012 material.  Gov Sanford has a right to a vacation but if you're leaving the country or hiking on nude hiking weekend, shouldn't you tell someone and let the Lt. Governor be in charge?  This thing sounds like a soap opera--even his own staff didn't handle it well.

Yes, Chris Matthews knows how to push Joe and Mika's buttons--that's why he is so good at what he does.  Had to laugh when Joe said he wasn't fighting the battle of past decades when his chatter is exactly that--it is a repeat of what the GOP has been using as tactics against health care reform since Truman.  I'm waiting for someone in the republican party to step up and TELL us why they could find (borrow) billions every month for a war of choice, Iraq, but they cannot find money for the American people.  That's what drives me nuts.  Fight wars but forget the citizens who vote them into office, pay their salaries, and pay for their high end health care.

I used to like John McCain as a person because he was fair but his anti-Obama statements have a note of "poor loser" in them.  Pres Obama made a point NOT to question McCain's patriotism but McCain's latest remarks make him look like a senile, old man who is stuck in decades of war mindset.  Remember then candidate Obama's comments during the campaign and debates--we must change the mindset that took us into Iraq in the first place.  Pres Obama is doing his best to change it but obviously neocons have yet to learn the lessons of the past.  Graham and McCain--the Tweedledum and Tweedledee of the Senate.

My take on DiFi, every democrat who waffles on health care reform should be warned that 72% of all Americans want a public option and want reform.  If they fail to get some backbone and stand firm, they should be sent packing.  Get some politicians who work for the people and not play Senate politics.

The people of America will be more then happy to elect Republicans next after they out of a job, paying high property and sales taxes to support new health care and energy taxes, having to defend Hawaii from attack from North Korea, and realizing that Obama is nothing but a walking talking lie.

So you think the State of Illinois will raise my  state property & sales taxes to support Federal programs for health care & energy, or do you think the Federal Government will start collecting local real estate taxes & state/local sales taxes? How exactly do you think that would work?

And, you feel that N.Korea has an actual bomb they will somehow manange to get anywhere near Hawaii, and thereby incur the wrath of the entire American government & people (even Kim Jung Il's not that damn stupid, but maybe you are)?

Seeing that the stimulus has failed, as indicated by Obama yesterday during his press conference, it looks like Governor Sanford made the right call.

Or maybe the Sanfords of this country contributed to its failure.  All the fighting that went on over it delayed for way too long.  The big question is, who will the voters ultimately blame for its failure?  The ones who approved it, or the ones who blocked it at every turn until too much time had passed?

So you think the State of Illinois will raise my  state property & sales taxes to support Federal programs for health care & energy, or do you think the Federal Government will start collecting local real estate taxes & state/local sales taxes? How exactly do you think that would work?

----------------

VAT tax. National sales tax. Tax on fuel. You name it, the Democrats will tax it. All highly inflationary, all highly regressive.

Someone has to pay for all these things Obama wants.
Horray for Sanford for taking a Farris Bueller day off!  Don't tell the press why you went to Buenes Aires and what you did while you were there.  Let the nannies in the press fret and tut-tut over it --- "You had to have been up to no-good! -- Confess!" Of all people, married men with big responsibilities should be able to go off by themselves with no questions asked every now and then!!
