*** Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough: As anyone who has turned on a television set in the past 12-15 hours has noticed, Michael Jackson’s passing will overshadow any political news today -- and perhaps throughout the weekend. Of course, that’s probably welcome news to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, as well as to a Republican Party that was going to have to endure more “What’s wrong with the GOP?” stories. Also, the Jackson news, plus the fact that it’s the Friday before Congress leaves for its July 4 break, makes it a ripe opportunity for a bad news dump. So what/who will it be? Still, politics doesn’t stop. President Obama meets in the White House with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at 10:30 am ET, and the two hold a joint press conference an hour later.

Obviously, much of the coverage of today’s bilateral will focus on some of the tension between the two world leaders, particularly over fiscal policy (Merkel has questioned the U.S. spending, while the Obama administration has wondered why Germany isn’t doing more to counteract the global recession). But do note that this is the THIRD personal meeting between the two since Obama became president. The biggest news that Merkel and Obama could make would be on the issue of Iran.

*** Pick your title -- Human Nature, PYT, The Lady in My Life, The Way You Make Me Feel, She’s Out of My Life, The Girl is Mine: Mark Sanford tries to return to some normalcy today, when he holds a cabinet meeting at 12:30 pm. But the calls for him to resign are getting louder now that he’s admitted to visiting his Argentine girlfriend while on a taxpayer-funded trip. “While the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with,” Sanford said in a statement yesterday. “That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip.” That’s not satisfying some South Carolina Republicans, however. “I think he’s gone, it’s over,” said state Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler Jr., per the New York Times. “Leaving aside his personal life, when you use taxpayer dollars, that’s what Republicans are all about -- spending tax dollars wisely. This was not spending tax dollars wisely.” The next three weeks are huge for Sanford. If there's a drip-drip of more allegations, then he probably can't hang on. But he's got two things going for him now: 1) Michael Jackson's death, and 2) the July 4th holiday. Both could be disruptions that keep him out of the public eye a tad.

*** Thriller (on Capitol Hill): Perhaps the biggest drama in politics today will be in the House of Representatives, where Democrats are trying to bring to the floor -- and then pass -- the energy/climate change/cap-and-trade legislation. Per NBC’s Mike Viqueira, Democrats last night didn’t think they had the votes to pass the bill. And if they don’t have the votes, they aren’t going to bring it to the floor. Viq adds that the legislation is up in the air as of this morning. Right now, House Democrats plan to move forward with the bill first thing today. But it’s not in the bag. Speaker Pelosi was seen stalking the floor yesterday during votes to button-hole wavering Democrats. Of course, today’s drama sparks this question: If the energy bill is THIS heavy of a lift in the Democratic-controlled House, then how the heck is the White House going to get this bill out of the Senate?

Video: House Democrats just announced that they’ll take a vote on a sweeping climate change bill by the end of the week. Venture capitalist Ira Ehrenpreis discusses why investing in green energy pays off in an economic downturn.

*** Beat It: Speaking to reporters at yesterday’s Christian Science Monitor breakfast, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel listed a few contrasts between this year’s health-care fight and the one that failed in ’93-94 (industry groups are now playing a constructive role in the reform, the House committees drafting the legislation are now working together, and the administration is now allowing Congress to draft the legislation). But here’s another difference: The majority of TV ad spending is SUPPORTING the White House’s health-care efforts -- not OPPOSING them. That’s also true on energy. To put it simply, Harry and Louise are getting overwhelmed right now. The campaign apparatus that serves as Obama’s backstop is like nothing we've seen for a president, well, maybe ever. And that apparatus is probably enough to blunt special interest pressure. We've seen one example already -- the MoveOn TV ad against Dianne Feinstein. It's a message the group and Obama supporters hope is received by other wavering Democrats on health care. Also, the New York Times has a C.W.-setting piece on how the Obama White House and Senate Democrats are at an impasse over how to pay for health care.

*** Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’: Missing those daily superdelegate counts? The speculation about when states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan would hold their primaries/caucuses? Come on, admit it -- you miss it. Well, if you are, you can head over Saturday morning to the first meeting of the DNC’s Democratic Change Commission, which has been tasked with reforming 1) the primary calendar, 2) the number of superdelegates, and 3) the caucus system. Presiding over the meeting will be DNC chair Tim Kaine and commission co-chairs Jim Clyburn and Claire McCaskill, and there isn’t supposed to be any big news. The 37-member commission will listen to a presentation of Democratic Party presidential nominations by Rhodes Cook; a look at the superdelegates by Elaine Kamarck; and an examination of the caucus system by Organizing for America’s Mitch Stewart. This is all in the fact-gathering stage, but ask yourself this: How likely is it that this DNC would dramatically change a system that helped launch the president's campaign? Iowa and South Carolina are VERY safe. As for the superdelegate system, well that’s another story…

*** Because I’m bad, I’m bad, come on (or sha-mon): Per Politico, "House Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey (D-Wis.) and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) engaged in a late-afternoon shouting match on the House floor after Obey reportedly rebuffed Waters on an earmark request, aides and witnesses said." More: "Witnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it appeared that Waters pushed or shoved Obey. The pair were seen shouting at each other and had to be separated by members -- who were crowded on the floor casting final votes before heading off to a party at the White House." She wanted him to fund a program in her name. Obey, no fan of projects in members' names -- so-called "monuments to me" -- said no. The scuffle ensued. Will this make Obey a hero on Fox News opinion programs? Stay tuned.

*** Rock With You (and Reagan): Finally, while covering the Reagan White House, NBC's Andrea Mitchell remembers vividly Michael Jackson's photo-op with the late president. Reagan (and Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole) granted him a presidential public safety communication award on May 14, 1984, to thank him for allowing the White House to use his hit song, "Beat it" in a campaign against teen drunken driving. "Well, isn't this a thriller," Reagan said at the time. "We haven't seen this many people since we left China." The Washington Post reported then: "'Just think, you all came to see me,' Reagan added, looking out over the crowd on the South Lawn of the White House."

George Will column (Jun 24) on the Obama green agenda:

Spanish economics professor Gabriel Calzada has studied the impact of Spain's aggressive renewable energy policies on their economy.  The unemployment rate in Spain is 18.1%, more than double the European Union average.  Spanish spending on alternative energy has created jobs, but they are often temporary and have received $752K to $800K each in subsidies.  And each new job created entails the loss of 2.2 other jobs that are either lost or not created in other industries because of the political allocation of capital.

"...one can be dismayed by the frequency with which such findings are ignored simply because they question policies that are so invested with righteousness that methodical economic reasoning about their costs and benefits seems unimportant....It is hardly counterintuitive that politically driven investments are economically counterproductive.  Indeed, environmentalists with the courage of their convictions should argue that the point of such investments is to subordinate market rationality to the higher agenda of planetary salvation....When the president speaks of 'new green energy economies' creating 'countless well-paying jobs,' perhaps they are really countless, meaning incapable of being counted."

Ah, a voice of reason amidst all this cap and trade, wind farm, yada yada yada nonsense.  We need to save ourselves from our own stupidity before we can even contemplate 'saving' the planet.
No energy tax. You people are killing us with all your frikkin' taxes.

Get Obama out of the White House.

Really? There was an income tax cut that took place back in April. Then there was the tax increase on tobacco. Please enlighten me on all the other tax increases you've been hit with by "us people."

And don't tell me about taxes you are predicting because you want to bash the President. If it hasn't been signed into law yet, your taxes haven't increased.

Stop your whining!
Not really politics, but hearing someone like Al Sharpton and others on Keith last night talking about Michael Jackson's role in the African-American community, I kept thinking--what are they talking about?  Seems to me he tried to downplay his blackness, never was a public role model and in fact was trying to be white.
Steeler Fan Pittsburgh, PA
=================================================
When white people get a tan, are they "trying to be black"?

Entertainers (and non entertainers) of all races change their appearance all the time . . . why does Michael Jackson have to be any different?

Most people have things they would change about themselves, however most don't have the means to go the the extremes Michael Jackson did . . . however, that still doesn't mean he was "trying to be white" . . . I think he was trying to be happy.

Here's hoping he enjoyed his ride to the top half as much as the rest of us did.

P.S. Michael Jackson never "downplayed" his blackness, he just "played up" his humanity.

Farrah is etched into the spank bank of any male coming of age in the 70's and will be remembered but we lost another musial legend yesterday too.  No, not MJ, I'm talkin' about Sky Saxon.  I guess he finally got pushed too hard!  What crappy timing, don't die on the same day as two of the most famous people on the planet.

Chris, IL-I don't know what industries you think are supporting this cap and trade bill, but none of the industries I work with see this as anything but a job-killing, tax raising money-grab.

The CBO calls it a command and control takeover of the energy sector.  Look it up-that was the economic system of the soviet Union-which fell under its own weight.

Even the CHINESE have gone to a market driven capitalist econmci system.  Only Obama, safe in his ivory tower, believes in a command and control economy.

This man is a disaster.  Catch any of Warren Buffet's comments on the economy, and Obama's 'leadership'?  It seems he is regretting his endorsement.  No, that does not mean he wishes he had endorsed McCain-it means that he wishes he had endorsed Hillary.

And, Lord knows, so do I.
First Read you forgot to mention that the 'Ah-man' gave President Obama a gift!!
When he referenced him being like bush, he shut the republicans up!!!!  President Obama should be thankful for the insult.

I'm so thankful to be an American where I can worship God, love my president, enjoy freedom of speech and have my family with me.
This is rich...while a congressman Sanford voted to impeach a president over lying about an affair...why is he still around as governor after driving his state back into the 19th century and carrying on with a foreign national while on official state business?

Don't let facts get in your way.  Clinton was impeached for lying under oath, not for diddling Monica.  Did Sanford lie under oath?
Dismayed, Minneapolis (Sent Friday, June 26, 2009 9:52 AM)

A liar is a liar. Its the hypocrisy of a family values drivelhead turning out to have none. Clinton never made the same claims.
Can we see the "two magnificent parts" or do we have to be a tax stealing, adulterous governor to do that??
Just checking in. How many of you crying about socialist healthcare have dropped your medicare and tricare and gone into the private market for your insurance today? None? Then shaddup about how bad government run healthcare is and let the reat of us in on your little gravytrain.

If President Obama had not been elected:

- we wouldn't have nearly $4 trillion dollars of additional debt

OBAMA-CARE.

THE QUESTIONS OBAMA & THE DEMOCRATS REFUSE TO ANSWER:

1,)  HOW MANY "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" CURRENTLY IN THE USA WILL BE COVERED --- BY OUR TAX MONEY ---- IN THE DEMOCRAT PROPOSED HEALTHCARE PLAN?

2.)  WHY SHOULD WE PROVIDE FREE HEALTHCARE TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?

3.)  HOW MANY MORE MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL SNEAK INTO THIS COUNTRY TO OBTAIN THIS FREE, TAXPAYER-PROVIDED HEALTHCARE?

THIS IS ABOUT HARD-EARNED TAXPAYER MONEY.

Feisty :

I really don't believe you have a lot of respect for anybody or anything.

You only agree on this blog with those who are like-minded and have allowed this blog to be your one and only friend.

Say hi to Mark And Domenico for me.
A few tidbits:

- I was joking with my husband this morning that Mark Sanford must be kicking himself right now for not scheduling his trip for THIS week instead . . . lol!

- Rest in peace Farrah Fawcett . . . you were truly an icon of American womanhood and you will be missed! My husband remembers you a little too fondly I think! :)

- I agree that the media goes overboard alot . . . but seeing as Michael Jackson died yesterday . . . and he had been entertaining the world for over 30 years . . . I don't think the less than 24 hours of coverage we have had so far is "too much" . . . I think that sometimes WE THE PEOPLE become a little too jaded . . . this is one of those times.

- I think it is great that President Obama is meeting with our allies instead of belittling them - yet another refreshing change!

- I love the way all the economic experts on this blog have not even ATTEMPTED to explain to me what service private insurance companies are providing to the American people for the money they receive?

I have asked repeatedly, and yet all I hear is crickets . . . am I missing something?

We pay outrageously high premiums to insurance companies . . . the doctors preform the actual service . . . we still pay out of pocket because the service is not covered and/or we haven't met our deductible . . . what are private insurance companies doing other than lining their pockets with MY money? Anyone?
MSNBC headline yesterday: “BREAKING NEWS: New jobless claims rise unexpectedly to 627,000; continuing claims up slightly”

Unexpectedly?

Obama has been in office over 6 months (if you count his phony “Office of the President Elect” stunt). Notwithstanding that the US Constitution has no provision whatsoever for the Office of the President Elect, so pressing were the issues Barack needed to address that he wanted a bill on his desk immediately to fix the crisis Bush supposedly created. None of the current problems are the result of the Democrat controlled congress mind you.

After authorizing another TRILLION dollars, on top of the TARP money already authorized, what has Barack wrought: Unemployment over 10%, gas over $3/gal, manufacturing sector in worst slump since end of WWII, April housing starts lowest on record.

Bush is gone. Obama and Pelosi are running the show and the country is going down the toilet even faster! The “Blame Bush” excuse isn’t helping. When will Obama EVER be held accountable for ANYTHING?
Don't forget the other pluses:

You're obviously taking the same medications Jackson was. It's clouded your thinking a bit. Okay, a lot.
Between "Thriller" and "Off the Wall", I gotta go wtih "Off the Wall Mike".
This is exactly the point.  A government option will cause many lemmings such as yourself to run to that plan, driving up the cost of my plan to the point where I will be forced to the government "option".  If you have a relative that has been treated at the VA, you already know how bad government run healthcare is.

Dismayed, Minneapolis (Sent Friday, June 26, 2009 9:56 AM)

If the Government option is defeated watch the cost of your plan  go up to the point where you'll will be forced to drop it all together.
As Buffett said, Cap and Trade is just a massive, regressive energy tax. But Democrats feel obligated to do something for their ecomarxist supporters who are hell bent on deindustrializing the United States while Brazil, Russia, India and China sit back and laugh!

All Obama is doing is creating a huge central government running every aspect of our lives; a world where PC censorship, race, gender, sexual orientation and radical environmentalism triumphs uber alles.

Big Business and Big Government are just two sides of the same coin. The government is not there to help you, it is just another corporation out to shaft the little man.

Pelosi and Obamas leftist idealism all sounds great on paper but be careful what you wish for because you will be extremely disappointed when you see the true face of the far left!
- we wouldn't have nearly $4 trillion dollars of additional debt
====================================
The debt was at $10 Trillion when Obama took office.
It has gone up $1.37 Trillion. Not $4 Trillion.
Keep track for yourself.

I am debating your comment sir; Elvis and Michael shared the same obscrued life. Elvis "Over dosed" on "drugs" sir and Michael had an addition to the same prescription drugs (we are waiting for the results).

He was no different than Elvis actually...he offered more and gave a hell of a lot. His bigest problem was the way he was raised and paying instead of fighting.

He never had a childhood and I do believe he most likely never experienced a "real" love life. There are such things as virgins...even males, by choice or lack of knowledge or fear. I am not making excuses for him, because I didn't know him. I am merely giving consious observation.

To OBAMA'S HEALTHCARE FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?:

Riddle me this:

Is it your position that if someone is in this country illegally, and they get sick, we should just let them die because their paperwork isn't in order?

Really?

Here's an idea . . . when a person who is here illegally gets sick . . . once they are feeling better  . . . they can work to pay off their bills . . . just like the rest of us do . . . or we can just send them back home and call it even . . . but whining about it and letting them die?

Not an option.

I was disappointed to see live coverage for hrs last night on MSNBC of Michael Jackson.  I am sorry he died but there are more important things that watching people standing outside a hospital;  and don't turn him into a god when he definitely had more than a few problems/an understatement.  I want the focus back on Sanford..he should be forced to leave office and on the real news in Iran.  The people who are fighting for freedom in Iran aren't mournting Michael Jackson by stopping their news and pretending MJ is the most important news in the world.  America's obsession with celebrity is why we are falling behind in the world.  I applaud Obama for what he is doing but the majority of the people in this country couldn't get their eyes off reality tv or 'Americas Got Talent' long enough to tell you what is going on the world.  The USA needs to quit being so dumbed down and celebrity obsessed.  MSNBC put the news back on tonight PLEASE>.enough with the MJ obsession.

So now FR is exploiting Jackson's death with all these silly titles.

Not a big Jackson fan but he was great in the 80's when MTV was great.

Then MTV turned into some kind of monster and ruined it's credibility. The music videos got lost in other wierd programming. People tuned out. Then VHI went in the same direction so now we have GAC and CMT, both country video stations and the rock groups are working their way into country video.

Quincy Jones and MTV allowed Jackson unlimited fame.
Thriller, the album and the video, is his signature.
Then the wierd whack jacko kicked in and helped ruin an otherwise great career.

I don't think there is any question that the loss of an artistic contributor, who as provided so much joy to millions of people around the world, is hugely profound. Michael Jackson, like John Lennon, could truly "Change the World" and was preparing to raise the entertainment bar once more, before hanging it up for good; a shame. A real shame....One can only speculate as to the magnitude and pressure he felt in his personal life, but I didn’t admire, or look to, the guy for spiritual, moral, or political direction. The guy could get down, and when you heard his stuff come on the sound system, any sound system, if you didn’t dance, you damn sure tapped your foot…..I’ll miss him, and wish only calm for his family….

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Happy Custer had it coming day!  (yes, he most certainly did).  to anyone else out there like me who is proud of their native heritage - celebrate, it is an honored traditional celebration at my home and in my family for 5 generations at least.
I know, off topic, but since the news media won't acknowledge it someone has to, and that would be me!
R.I.P Michael

Today has to be the ultimate Take Out the Trash Day! If the government were to announce that the Roswell incident was really an alien landing today, would anybody notice?

p.s. Morning Joe was great! More Willie and Ol' Man Barnicle, less Mother Knows Best Mika and Fillibuster Joe!

p.p.s. I also loved how Joe and Mika ganged up on Chris on Wednesday, and Chris STILL kicked their asses! Viva Chris Matthews! Viva Hardball!
Well, according to the Obama plan, older lives are notworth much-he wants cuts in medicare that go to 'lost' causes.
He also wants to cut medicare and medicaid funds to nursing homes.
no joe, no bo, nj

Out spreading lies again? The Obama plan I read says nothing about lost causes or nursing homes. Please provide a reference to prove your assertion.

The first clue to your lie is it always follows the same pattern. It's the "Obama wants to do_something_bad" sentence. As others have pointed out today, the GOP responses are ridiculous and VERY PREDICTABLE.

If you do actually volunteer as you say, that's great and thank you. Maybe you're one of those bleeding hearts you seem to be bashing?
I was very disappointed in MSBC-TV last night.  Pre-empting Rachel Maddow's *NEWS* program for another hour of Keith Olbermann and half a dozen video clips: pathetic!
Michael has been entertaining us for 45 years.  And whoever said don't compare him to Elvis, since I am old enough to remember Elvis,  don't worry, I never would.  Someone also mentioned that Gov. Sandford didn't break any law.  Well, since Sanford "claimed" to be a christian, he broke one law, that's God's law: thy shall not commit adultery.
Is that big enough for you? We won't mention the awol from his job or the going to see the girlfriend on the state's dime "thingy."

Correction: MTV didn't play R & B before they broadcast Jackson's material; not simply "black music". And one must admit, Beat It and Billie Jean were/are very different and much more diversely listenable than ANYTHING that was being broadcast, then or now, on Soul Train or African American radio. Jackson and his marketing folks targeted EVERYONE, not just a single ethnic audience.....And by the way, has Queen ever appeared on Soul Train?
Here's one many don't know: Michael attended every single one of Queen's live shows during one of their world tours in the late 70's. He used much of what he saw and learned in his own productions; he was a HUGE Freddie Mercury fan.....May they both rest in peace....
