First thoughts: The Big Two

*** The Big Two: Congress is out of town, and Americans are getting ready for the long July 4 weekend. But the Obama White House is busy trying to keep up the momentum for both the energy bill and health-care reform. Yesterday, President Obama gave a five-newspaper interview to energy reporters that was part victory lap after Friday’s narrow House passage, and also part negotiating tactic with the Senate. As for health care, the president will hold yet another town hall on the subject on Wednesday -- this one in Annandale, VA (which has a major online component). This two-track push is certainly putting Republicans a tad on the defensive. What do they focus on? As we’ve noted before, the Obama administration juggling several balls at once makes it difficult for the opposition to focus its fire on all the different balls. Still, you’ve got to wonder: If presented with the choice -- drop the push for energy this year to get votes on health care -- would the White House take that deal?

*** New Haven style? So far, it’s been smooth sailing for Obama Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. In fact, a new Washington Post/ABC poll shows that 62% support her elevation to the nation’s highest court. But today could get somewhat bumpy for her. On the last day of its session, the U.S. Supreme Court today is expected to issue its ruling in the New Haven firefighter case. Serving on the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, Sotomayor denied claims that white firefighters had been discriminated against when New Haven threw out the results of a promotion test because not enough minorities had scored high enough on it. As the AP points out, it’s retiring Justice David Souter’s last day on the court, and he’ll be ruling on a case that impacts the woman trying to replace him -- Sotomayor. Expect the decision to come out around 10:00 am or 11:00 am ET.

Video: The Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling soon in a reverse discrimination lawsuit filed in New Haven, Conn., in which court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, ruled that the city acted properly in throwing out a firefighters promotion exam that minority candidates scored poorly on.

*** Iraq is back? Just askin’, but how is it that one of the most significant foreign-policy mileposts/deadlines -- withdrawing U.S. combat troops from Iraqi cities -- is arriving tomorrow without barely any notice? Indeed, it’s just another reminder that the story that dominated American politics from 2003-2007 has become an afterthought right now. Ironically, as attention has turned to other hotspots, violence has been increasing in Iraq. Still, Gen. Ray Odierno told CNN yesterday that Iraq is ready for the transition. “They've been working towards this for a long time,” he said, per the Washington Times. “And security remains good. We've seen constant improvement in the security force; we've seen constant improvement in governance. And I believe this is the time for us to move out of the cities and for them to take ultimate responsibility.”

Video: After six years in Iraq, American forces are drastically reshaping their posture – the first step towards withdrawing all combat forces home in 2011. NBC’s Tom Aspell reports.

*** Stonewall, Colombia/Honduras: At 4:25 pm ET today, President Obama and the first lady host an event at the White House to celebrate LGBT Month. It comes one day after the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. And it also comes after the Obama administration has received plenty of criticism from liberals and the gay community for its brief defending the Defense of Marriage Act, as well as for not moving yet to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” As Adam Nagourney wrote on Sunday, “The conflicting signals from the White House about its commitment to gay issues reflect a broader paradox: even as cultural acceptance of homosexuality increases across the country, the politics of gay rights remains full of crosscurrents.” In addition today, Obama meets with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe at 2:15 pm. The two will most likely discuss the military coup in Honduras. Obama already condemned the action, but what will happen next? Apparently, the U.S. played a major behind-the-scenes role to stop this.

*** Rudy and 2010:

If you don’t think Rudy Giuliani is seriously eyeing a bid for New York governor, then you probably didn’t read his New York Times op-ed last week, in which he called for a constitutional convention to resolve some of the state’s political problems. But more than hint about his gubernatorial intentions, Rudy’s op-ed might serve as a roadmap for others running for governor in 2010. Let’s face it: Two of the nation’s largest states (New York and California) have some serious problems right now, and much of it is due to how these states currently operate. However, one of Rudy’s ideas in his op-ed -- requiring a supermajority to raise taxes -- is one of the reasons some believe why California is in the mess it’s in.

*** Is the end in sight? Finally, the Minnesota Supreme Court has to be ruling soon on the never-ending Franken-Coleman contest, right? GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty told CNN yesterday that he would abide by whatever ruling the state court makes in the contest, where Democrat Al Franken seems to have an upper hand. "I'm prepared to sign [the certification] as soon as they give the green light," Pawlenty said. “I’m not going to defy an order of the Minnesota Supreme Court. That would be a dereliction of my duty."

Talk about PRICELESS!!!  The only Republicant they could find to go on Morning Joke and defend scumbag Sanford was Rudy Giuliani??  LOL Hmm I don’t know about you but one adulterer defending another just doesn’t ‘cut’ it!

It’s like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse as far as I’m concerned!  I wouldn’t believe anything that came out of their mouths if their tongues came notarized! Make that for the entire party of the GEENOPEE!  Nothing but a bunch of lying self centered selfish hypocrites all of them!

Glad to see the energy bill pass the first hurdle… on to the Senate & then our Presidents desk for signature.  Followed shortly by Health Care Reform!

Nice to see the party of stale male & pale are sticking to the stall tactics on Judge Sotomayor!  Stall & Spin but in the end… the Democrats will WIN!

Anyone else think the timing of the release of the so call Edwards’s sex tape is a little odd?  Sort of like the paper there in SC sitting on all the e-mails they had between Sanford & his Latin lover… just more manipulation by the so called press!  And another thing… is there any reason that Mika mouse has to continually remind us that she’s a ‘journalist’? She may be a ‘journalist’ but she’s not a very GOOD One!
So when will the media, and whoever these five newspapers that Obama gave personal interviews to, start telling the truth that all Americans will be heavily taxed by Obama's policies, and not just people making more then $250,000 dollars?
I made a mistake!

Stumbling on MTP I watched David Gregory for maybe 10 minutes.  One would think once you reach the level of moderating a national political program, you would have learned a few lessons along the way.  Not so with the king of gotcha.  So although presumptive on my part, here are three reasons why “gotcha” does not work.

1. Politicians are quick to recognize “Gotcha” and they have had plenty of practice redirecting answers to suit their purpose.
2. The interviewer wants to look smart, insightful, cleaver, but it is not about the interviewer.
3. Instead of focusing on the political issues, the observer focuses on the contest between the interviewer and the politician.  The interviewer always loses.

To all those Renegade readers:  I am savoring every page.   Feisty, what chapter are you on…or have you finished it already?

I haven’t seen my worst person in the world for over a week now…Could it be that Pat Buchanan is on an extended vacation?   Mark, what’s the story here?

Final thoughts on Michael Jackson:  He was born in Gary Indiana, but he was not your typical Hoosier.
The Destruction of America continues.

Everytime you mention this ruling without also mentioning that Judge Sotomayor was also joined in this ruling by TWO OTHER JUDGES (both white males), you are being irresponsible journalists.

Senator leader Harry Reid can now go to the Senate floor today and state what all Americans finally understand, "We lost the war in Iraq".

Cap&Trade bill - Worst Bill Ever.
Hello.

Please always remember we have a government of laws and not of men.

Enjoy your 4th. It's your day to celebrate.
Lots of news about 2012 as well over the week-end, as the DNC got its primary review commission under way to discuss things like superdelegates, the front-loaded calendar, problems in the caucuses. What's ironic with that, of course, is that whatever the GOP does is going to be much more important since Democrats won't have a competitive primary in '12, but they are definitely tons of very important issues both parties should urgently reform.
(Details: http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/06/28/reforming-the-primary-system/ )
"Still, Gen. Ray Odierno told CNN yesterday that Iraq is ready for the transition."

Okay, but are we ready? Interesting argument in a NYT article about troop withdrawal: http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/2009/06/are-the-iraqi-forces-ready.html
Obama is causing America to enter a Depression !!!

Unemployment will likely reach 14% to up to 20%

When asked about this - Obama responds...
"Double digit unemployment is likely"
No $hit Shirlock !!!!

And yet, he keeps spending money we dont have!!!
And ...
RECORD TAX INCREASES !!!!!
THE LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN THE WORLD'S HISTORY

Thanks for another First!!!
When Barack Hussein Obama became president the end was in sight.

Do what you gotta do Barack, your numbers are getting smaller, RAD MAN.

Democrats had to lie, fight, and steal votes to get enough to pass crap&trade, and most elements in that bill don't begin until later next decade. How in the world is Obama going to get healthcare bill through the House when that will cause common people's taxes to go up by $3000 a year starting now?
Free stuff, free stuff, I want free stuff.
John Edwards = daddy dearest ... the gangster of love ... and a sex tape to boot.

Sucks to be him I'll bet.
My name is Barack Obama, and I'm deeply concerned.
As usual rudy911 has it wrong...there should be a supermajority required to raise spending above inflation or population growth...that would cure most governments problems in a few years
Hi all posters and FR crew.  What a weekend.  I've been filled up with all the Michael Jackson information I need.  I mean no disrespect, the man gave us alot of years of music.  I was just surprised at how much time the MSM devoted to this.  But, I got thru it!!

So Minnesota is going to announce soon that Al Franken won.  Wow, ya think!!!

As far as Rudy running for Gov.  Eeek!  That's all I have to say.

I have a problem watching what's going on in Iraq.  But what's the alternative?  Thank you a-hole Bush!

To quote Eric "Confirm Sotomayor now", quit finding BS reasons to stall this.

There, I feel better now!!  Let the week begin!!

===========================================

For all the money that we pay them, I find it entertaining that the media is so ASTOUNDED that the Obama Administration expects the Congress to work on more than one thing at a time! lol

I mean, if you have a body with that many members, that many committees, governing a country with so many problems, shouldn't it be EXPECTED that they could work on more than one piece of legislation at once?

What in the hell have we been paying the Congress to do all these years?

They have shirked all oversight responsibilities of our financial markets, they put the interests of insurance companies over the interests of the people they are ALLEDGEDLY representing, and they will fork over a billion dollars for the people of a foreign country before they would allocate a dime for people suffering here at home.

Remember all that talk about "change" during the Presidential election?

Congress is a GREAT place to start - on BOTH SIDES of the aisle.
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is an issue that is changing the cultural and political landscape in if a person can bleed with it being told, can be useful to the translations, computer technology, and other useful facets  and should remain in those capacities. They need to be respected even if they are gay and Draconian laws should be reversed.

Here's the Sotomayor deal, for today at least. The SC will reverse the ruling she helped make and for 24 hours the media will hash and re-hash the idea, spawned by her opponents, that she's not ready for prime time because her side of the ruling was struck down.

And yet, several members of the Supreme Court will vote to support Sotomayor's ruling. This idea will reeive little or no mention. The fallacy the media will love to hype, today at least, is that a federal judge must rule in compliance with the majority of the SC in order to be considered for that august body.
Clearly this is wrong-headed, but to place that idea onto the scales of the argument in favor of Sotomayor's confirmation doesn't make for 'sexy' reporting.

If Michael Jackson's death can banish Iran, Energy, and Health Reform from the nightly news (nice work, NBC--not), then the travesty of reporting on Sotomayor should come as no surprise to anyone. By the way, Repubs and other opponents of Sotomayor: if you'd like a trancript or interpretation of this post, don't hesitate to ask.
I'll be visiting Hawaii over the 4th of July, so just where should I go to get the best view of the North Korean missile coming in on the 4th?
I sure hope that the Minnesota Supreme Court gets with it and hands down a ruling that will finally allow Senator Al Franken to take his rightful seat in the Senate.  I sure can't wait to hear his comments once he's seated.  Good that Pawlenty has decided to follow the law and accept the SC's ruling.

I'm not sure I like the two hour Morning Meeting so soon after the Mourning Jerk.  Too bad there isn't as news hour between shows as I'm on the left coast and at 6AM I'm ready for the daily news instead of a meeting.  I do however like Dylan Ratigan's Liberal take on business.  About time we have some sane honest business commentary about getting good regulations in place to keep the Wall Street Criminals from ripping us all off.  Good to hear someone saying that Ponzi Madoff should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Really pathetic how the media went bonkers about the death of Michael Jackson.  I'll be glad when the media gets back to work on giving us the real news that actually means something.  I wonder if MJ had a t-shirt in his closet that says "He who dies with the most Debt Wins!"?

In Dylan Ratigan We Trust!
So, Rude E. wants a supermajority for tax increases, huh?  That's a recipe for total paralysis...
>>>As Adam Nagourney wrote on Sunday, “The conflicting signals from the White House about its commitment to gay issues reflect a broader paradox: even as cultural acceptance of homosexuality increases across the country, the politics of gay rights remains full of crosscurrents.”
==========
As with pretty much everything else, the public is ahead of the Washington curve on this one.  As I posted elsewhere, too many in DC (including the President) are more concerned with political prospects than they are with the public good.  That's why it's up to us to keep on our representatives to do what we elected them to do, REPRESENT.

I see where Senator Kerry told a funny about Govs. Sanford and Palin. Palin shot back, "Senator Kerry, why the long face?".  Massive inbreeding is my guess.

Priceless response by Palin though.
Rudy Slippers returns?  Now where did I put my feather boa?  And I really MUST get my hair done.  Glamour is back!!

I wonder how much he's planning to spend per vote this time.  He should really save it for shoes.  So important to have the right shoes with every gown.

You have to put off the more controversial issues for later

'...House Democratic leaders are starting to show signs that they are now ready to push key aspects of the gay rights agenda...'

At last
Thank you, Nancy !!

From Washington Monthly:

A MORE LIBERAL SECOND HALF?....

The first half of 2009 on Capitol Hill has seen Congress focus the bulk of its attention on the economy, the budget, health care and energy. And while those last two are still very much on the front burner, Roll Call reports today that the second half of the year will likely feature more work on domestic social issues, most notably on gay rights.

...House Democratic leaders are starting to show signs that they are now ready to push key aspects of the gay rights agenda.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her leadership team met privately last week with Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) -- the three openly gay Members of Congress -- to chart a strategy for advancing gay rights issues this Congress.

Sources in the meeting said Members discussed workplace discrimination, health care benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees, and a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Lawmakers also discussed how to help the Senate pass hate crimes legislation that has already cleared the House and the possibility of rolling workplace discrimination and federal health benefits into one bill.

House Armed Services Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the original sponsor of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, has also agreed to hold hearings, revisiting the issue 16 years later.

The second half of the year is also likely to include a renewed debate over immigration reform, as evidenced by a meeting last week among key lawmakers plotting a legislative strategy. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) left feeling "very optimistic"; Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) described the meeting as "a real shot in the arm." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is committed to tackling immigration reform this year, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) sounded encouraged by the prospects.

I can't remember the last year in which policymakers even tried to do this much in a single calendar year. Bush didn't really have a policy agenda after 2005, so it's good to see Congress wiping off the cobwebs. It'll be even better if they can actually succeed....'

Nancy Pelosi, the Conservatives WORST NIGHTMARE !!

Pawlenty said. “I’m not going to defy an order of the Minnesota Supreme Court. That would be a dereliction of my duty."

<><><><><><><><><<><><><><>
If Gov Pawlenty remains true to his word, this will certainly help and impact this nation, which needs  help to bring about the change most of America voted for. Hopefully, this will help the Party of No Right Wing Ding Dongs STFU!
That's right, I happened upon MTP and had to turn it after about 5 minutes of David Gregory jumping all over David Axelrod trying to get him to spar with him.  Whats wrong with DG?  I am done with trying to give him chances.  No more MTP for me.  I'm with Feisty, give the show to Larry O!
of course the gay community should give Obama criticism for his stand, "or lack thereof." for gay rights; he made explicit statements while seeking the Dem nomination. Like overturning don't ask, don't tell, and stated DOMA was wrong 'which it is, duh'. and it shoud be overturned. He should instruct the congress to submit a bill to do way with DOMA immediately, and stop sitting on the fence, because if he does he will fall off, Bigtime. [Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask, Act! action will delineate and define you.-Thomas Jefferson]
The newest CBO report notes that, by 2023, Obama's debt to gdp ratio will be 200%.

Read the report-you cannot go blindly following this Pied Piper of debt as he takes this country over a cliff, however much you may want to.  The report is on-line, easy to access, and not difficult to read.  In fact, on Friday, the report itself, and remarks from the committee, were on the front page of the Washington Post.  First Read didn't notice.

For those who confuse the terms 'debt' and deficit'-I'll make it easy:

If you have a home with a $300,000 mortgage balance, a car with a $25,000 outstanding loan, and $10,000 of credit card debt, your total DEBT is $335,000.  That, of course, is without interest-that is the total debt you owe.

If your monthly take-home income is $5000, and your mortgage payment, including tax and insurance, is $3000, your car payment is $500, credit card payments $500, utilities, insurance $500, groceries and gas $1000, you have a monthly DEFICIT of $500.  You will likely cover it by adding to your credit card debt, increasing your total DEBT.

You can sustain this situation for just so long before your credit cards are maxxed out and you can no longer borrow to sustain your lifestyle.  That is what Obama is doing to this country.

In the World War II era, total DEBT equalled 40% of GDP-and it was money we owed ourselves.  Americans buying war bonds were the holders of those notes.

Today, a greater percentage of the debt is held by foreign governments.  They buy these bonds because of their security and return-the same reason bonds are given for births, graduations, etc.  However, Once the debt to gdp ratio becomes too great, interest rates will soar, due to the risk involved in having such a huge amount of debt.

Obama has his own reality, and in it, there is a perfect world that only he can create.  Unfortunately for those of us who live in the real world, his 'perfection' is going to cause great destruction.

It seems all too easy for many of you to be intellectually lazy, and just continue to cheerlead for him.  I hope that at least some of you will start reading, doing the math, and helping to stop this train wreck for the sake of our country.
Free stuff, free stuff, I want free stuff.

WE THE PEOPLE provide the tax revenue that runs the governemnt.

P.S. Seems to me that that WHINING sound is the Republicans in Congress trying to distract the American people from what a horrible job they are doing fighting for "Joe Sixpack" instead of "Pharmaceutical Phil".
Bobo Deprression writes: Obama is causing America to enter a Depression !!!

Jobs don't matter to Obama and Pelosi. World recession/depression going on? Doesn't matter, load up the debt, load up the taxes. They are on a mission you know. And thore in a protectionsim clause for good measure on top the energy tax bill. Who cares if it's a big job killer. "Someones got to pay, we're saving the planet!!" bellows Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi.
Stonewalling would certainly be applicable to Gov. Pawlenty for his non stance on the Al Franken/Norm Coleman senate battle. Clearly, it is time to bring this thing to a close and allow Mr. Franken to go take his rightful seat in the U.S. senate, where his vote will be critical in the upcoming battle on healthcare and the energy bill.

Side Note: Please Keith O., don't allow Diane Dimon back on your show pretending that she is a credible reporter. She is tabloid journalism at its worse and only wants to promote her lies and her book of lies about Michael Jackson. She's in the same category as Nancy Grace who has made a career on the tragedy of others.

June 30th - 1 more day. It's time to leave Iraq. It's just time. Here's to our troops. I had hoped for a more stable country as we begin our withdrawl. But I'm afraid it will be years before it is all sorted out.

A tragic legacy for the Bush Administration.
Nashville_fan: For all the money that we pay them, I find it entertaining that the media is so ASTOUNDED that the Obama Administration expects the Congress to work on more than one thing at a time! lol

Congress doesn't appear to work on much of anything. They let the liberal lobbyists write their bills and they don't even bother to read them. So if you think, Congress is "working on more then one thing", you are sadly mistaken. They just vote the way their funders tell them too.

Oh, lol.

While the Congress takes a break President Obama is still on the job making sure to keep the Energy Bill in the news.  I'm glad that Nancy was able to crack the whip and get the Energy Bill passed, yet another victory for her over the dopes of nope.  Must really rile the evil elepahnts to no end that they impotently whine but can't stop the Pelosi Juggernaut for passing good legislation.

President Obama really needs to step up his program to help the gay community since they helped him.  About time he just wipes away that idiotic Don't Ask Don't Tell nonsense with the stroke of a pen.  Also time to destroy that unAmerican unDemocratic Defense of Marriage garbage and allow Americans more freedom of choice.

That was strange to have a military coup in the Honduras over the weekend.  It will be interesting to hear how this came about and what we did while it was happening.  If Hugo Chavez doesn't like it then it's probably a good thing.

No joe,

The Congressional Budget office cannot predict the future 14 years out.

Hell, most of these financial predictions aren't even good ONE YEAR out.

So put your big boy pants on and quit trying to scare us. You are being intellectually dishonest. Again.

"How accurate are CBO's budget projections?

By statute, CBO's baseline projections must estimate the future paths of federal spending and revenues under current law and policies. The baseline is therefore not intended to be a prediction of future budgetary outcomes; instead, it is meant to serve as a neutral benchmark that lawmakers can use to measure the effects of proposed changes to spending and taxes. So for that reason and others, actual budgetary outcomes are almost certain to differ from CBO's baseline projections."

It's already 15% in Michigan and Oregon. California isn't too far behind. No one with any brains sees any of it getting better any time soon. 15% national unemployment is a real possibility. 20% would be an absoulte catastrophe, but is also possible.

Many government workers will get the axe this week - many states budgets must be in place and balanced by the end of the week, and most won't be. That should add 2-3 percentage to the unemployment lists.
I'm glad that Nancy was able to crack the whip and get the Energy Bill passed, yet another victory for her over the dopes of nope.

I'm glad it passed the House as well.  Because it will never make it through the Senate and will be the source of numerous campaign ads against vulnerable Dems next year.  If this was such a great bill why did 44 Dems vote against it?
gepa (Sent Monday, June 29, 2009 9:48 AM)

Perfect sentiments this morning.  I am a strong Obama supporter; but if he doesn't LEAD on this issue, I will work loud and long at making sure he understands why 2012 will NOT be a picnic.
^^^^^^^^^
Lindsay Graham has got to be the biggest phony out there.  Jenny Sanford IS a good woman.  Her character is NOT in question.  How crazy must your life be that by your fourth child, you want Lindsey Graham to be the 'godfather'?  Something has gone critically wrong with your friendship base for that to be the case.
^^^^^^^^
Once again, I didn't watch MTP.  I read the transcript last night and I am telling you Mike Murphy is hysterical.  "Mrs. Hunstman is on the line."  That's GOOD stuff.  David Gregory, seriously -do you ever think maybe your mouth is out front of the news?  UGH!  Too painful.

*moon*.stfu

I'm sorry the stringing together of nouns and verbs is more than your childish brain can endure.  Don't like it, don't read it.

PS.  You must have been on vacation the past couple of weeks, because I don't have any problem 'speaking truth' to Obama.  He's going to have to pull a better 'message discipline' to keep my support.  But don't kid yourself, I don't regret my vote - the 'alternative' was not a viable option at all.  None of you Repubs have even attempted to grapple with what Bomber McCain would have done differently.  He is not what you call a 'critical thinker', so I can only assume his Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran was a nervous tick that may have resulted in a certain 'red' button being pushed.  That's assuming he hadn't crapped his depends by now and Palin (G-d help us) was running the show.  I'm still going to go with the smart guy - even if I think he is 'weak' on civil rights issues.

^^^^^^^^^^^

PS.  Sotomayor and the 'big' decision will blip on the radar as MSM tries to figure out how Billie Mays died.  Was Morning Joe seriously devoting 15 minutes to this topic this morning?  That was my joke of the day.  All respect to the Mays fans and family - it's not political, and it certainly isn't 'news'.
