*** The Big Two: Congress is out of town, and Americans are getting ready for the long July 4 weekend. But the Obama White House is busy trying to keep up the momentum for both the energy bill and health-care reform. Yesterday, President Obama gave a five-newspaper interview to energy reporters that was part victory lap after Friday’s narrow House passage, and also part negotiating tactic with the Senate. As for health care, the president will hold yet another town hall on the subject on Wednesday -- this one in Annandale, VA (which has a major online component). This two-track push is certainly putting Republicans a tad on the defensive. What do they focus on? As we’ve noted before, the Obama administration juggling several balls at once makes it difficult for the opposition to focus its fire on all the different balls. Still, you’ve got to wonder: If presented with the choice -- drop the push for energy this year to get votes on health care -- would the White House take that deal?

*** New Haven style? So far, it’s been smooth sailing for Obama Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. In fact, a new Washington Post/ABC poll shows that 62% support her elevation to the nation’s highest court. But today could get somewhat bumpy for her. On the last day of its session, the U.S. Supreme Court today is expected to issue its ruling in the New Haven firefighter case. Serving on the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, Sotomayor denied claims that white firefighters had been discriminated against when New Haven threw out the results of a promotion test because not enough minorities had scored high enough on it. As the AP points out, it’s retiring Justice David Souter’s last day on the court, and he’ll be ruling on a case that impacts the woman trying to replace him -- Sotomayor. Expect the decision to come out around 10:00 am or 11:00 am ET.

Video: The Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling soon in a reverse discrimination lawsuit filed in New Haven, Conn., in which court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, ruled that the city acted properly in throwing out a firefighters promotion exam that minority candidates scored poorly on.

*** Iraq is back? Just askin’, but how is it that one of the most significant foreign-policy mileposts/deadlines -- withdrawing U.S. combat troops from Iraqi cities -- is arriving tomorrow without barely any notice? Indeed, it’s just another reminder that the story that dominated American politics from 2003-2007 has become an afterthought right now. Ironically, as attention has turned to other hotspots, violence has been increasing in Iraq. Still, Gen. Ray Odierno told CNN yesterday that Iraq is ready for the transition. “They've been working towards this for a long time,” he said, per the Washington Times. “And security remains good. We've seen constant improvement in the security force; we've seen constant improvement in governance. And I believe this is the time for us to move out of the cities and for them to take ultimate responsibility.”

Video: After six years in Iraq, American forces are drastically reshaping their posture – the first step towards withdrawing all combat forces home in 2011. NBC’s Tom Aspell reports.

*** Stonewall, Colombia/Honduras: At 4:25 pm ET today, President Obama and the first lady host an event at the White House to celebrate LGBT Month. It comes one day after the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. And it also comes after the Obama administration has received plenty of criticism from liberals and the gay community for its brief defending the Defense of Marriage Act, as well as for not moving yet to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” As Adam Nagourney wrote on Sunday, “The conflicting signals from the White House about its commitment to gay issues reflect a broader paradox: even as cultural acceptance of homosexuality increases across the country, the politics of gay rights remains full of crosscurrents.” In addition today, Obama meets with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe at 2:15 pm. The two will most likely discuss the military coup in Honduras. Obama already condemned the action, but what will happen next? Apparently, the U.S. played a major behind-the-scenes role to stop this.

*** Rudy and 2010:

If you don’t think Rudy Giuliani is seriously eyeing a bid for New York governor, then you probably didn’t read his New York Times op-ed last week, in which he called for a constitutional convention to resolve some of the state’s political problems. But more than hint about his gubernatorial intentions, Rudy’s op-ed might serve as a roadmap for others running for governor in 2010. Let’s face it: Two of the nation’s largest states (New York and California) have some serious problems right now, and much of it is due to how these states currently operate. However, one of Rudy’s ideas in his op-ed -- requiring a supermajority to raise taxes -- is one of the reasons some believe why California is in the mess it’s in.

*** Is the end in sight? Finally, the Minnesota Supreme Court has to be ruling soon on the never-ending Franken-Coleman contest, right? GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty told CNN yesterday that he would abide by whatever ruling the state court makes in the contest, where Democrat Al Franken seems to have an upper hand. "I'm prepared to sign [the certification] as soon as they give the green light," Pawlenty said. “I’m not going to defy an order of the Minnesota Supreme Court. That would be a dereliction of my duty."

So what does todays ruling realing mean 1st Read reporter's?

The voters(who voted for) of South Carolina deserve the Ridicule coming to Sanford now & in the future for the Hypocrisy they display with thier BibleThumping ways !Let South Carolina languish in the Political theater of the Absurd. Can you say Taliban !

Fiesty, Mika is'nt & will Never be a Journalist, she's a TV commentator(actually Not even that).

President Obama keeps the GOP turning in circles, never able to getagrip on a Single item(which was done effectively for years).

Aint Chicago Politics Fun, I Daum sure love it !

Democrats, have you had your Rabies shot today ?
So, which one of you conservative "moons" and "dogs" want to take a stab at explaining why Governor Sanford was begging his wife to go see his girlfriend?

Does that sound like a decision that someone of "sound mind" would make?

Can someone "rationalize" this for us please?

Thanks!
Irag is back, big time.

Bush was right.
Big time dummies on the left.
To all of you that say you are done with the Loser David Gregory, why do you keep watching, same goes for Moron Joe's show. And the family values party parading Rudy Giuliani out to defend the talk about Sanford,I guess these to birds will fly together.Just a quick word on the comments made by Tim Pawlenty makeing statements about not standing in the way if the courts rule in Al favor, sure seems Big talking Tim has back off his spew about fair elections, and every vote needs to be counted. The Obstructionest have lost, and Al should be seated soon.
Yesterday, for the first in many months I watched MTP mainly because I wanted to hear David Axelrod, whom I admire a lot.  It will, however, be the last time as I was angered by David Gregory and his rude manner of 'interviewing', interrupting and bullying his guest.

Later it was obvious, the difference in tone when talking to Mitt Romney and Sen Lindsey Graham. Please MSNBC get someone else to do this show...Laurence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow or Erin Burnett. You have lost a lot of viewers by having DG as the host.

I finished Renegade about two weeks ago, it was a very good read and gives one a better understanding of how our President thinks and acts.  We will be alright, our country is in good hands.
Obie ... if you hurray you can still "bury" America while the focus is on Whacko Jacko. Bad Chihuahua (Sent Monday, June 29, 2009 9:57 AM)

is that a hip-hip- hurray?

Or did you mean to HURRY, Hurry, step right up?

I can never tell if you are cheerleading - or just blowing the players under the bleachers.  So, do, please tell?
I see the Ricci case was ruled on this morning and overturned.  Sorry Sonia, guess you exercised some poor judgment on that one.
I'll be visiting Hawaii over the 4th of July so just where should I go to get the best viewof the North Korea missile coming in on the 4th?

Hey Madeline Conn:

Why don't you "swim out to meet it?"

Governor Guiliani?  I think I just threw up in my mouth!
pat huntington ny

That happens a lot to people that live in NY. Hillary, Spitzer, Paterson, Weiner. They all make people throw up.
Typical Right Wing Ding Dong have the mumbo jumbo (unclear rationalism for opposition) when it comes to protections’.  If the would stop obstructionism the Energy Bill no jobs will go across the sea. Chrysler just reopened their doors Right Wing Ding Dong how do you ding dongs intent to blame your President?

Eric Cantor  and John Boehner stop “punishing” Americans by reading g a list of objectives comparable to the yellow pages.” It’s only the health and jobs of Americans at state which Right Wing Ding Dongs such as you fail to see.

after about 5 minutes of David Gregory jumping all over David Axelrod trying to get him to spar with him.  Whats wrong with DG?  I am done with trying to give him chances.  No more MTP for me.  I'm with Feisty, give the show to Larry O!

Cindy,

I'm with you, Fiesty, and some many other. I missed MTP 3 times and am glad I did since I really like the brilliant strategist Axelrod. It's time to get a real man on MTP and that would be Lawrence O.

NBC stop  losing viewers.

MMMMMMMMMM I love this blog.
President Obama: Forget bipartisanship. The right will fight you on everything and then will say you never tried to work with them. Get the 60 we need, or the 51 we need, and pass our agenda. That's what we hired you for. And though you wanted to change the tone in Washington, you have seen that the skunks on the right are coy enough to get an invite to the WH, but then complain that you fed them chicken and not steak. Or if you fed them steak, complain you were trying to kill them by feeding them red meat. They NEVER had any intention of working with you, and the only way to change that is to have the Republicans who love this country elect moderate and progressive Republicans who are willing to compromise! With the likes of Congressman Coppertone and Turtlehead McConnell, nothing will ever get done on a bipartisan basis. I will personally be working to get rid of Can'tor in Richmond though I live in No VA. We are headed mid-left, and just in time to save this great country of ours!
Bad Chihuahua (sent Mon. 29, 9:57 am) obama does'nt have to bury America, Bush did that 8 yrs. ago.

In the World War II era, total DEBT equalled 40% of GDP-and it was money we owed ourselves.  Americans buying war bonds were the holders of those notes.

PT Turner: Liberal lobbyists? Where have you been buddy? DO you know how much we paid or laws were ruled in favor of  Halliburton, Blackwater, Exxonmobile and the rest of the corrupt right businesses? I live outside DC and trust me, the Sierra Club lobbyists are taking those in Congress out to lunch at Mortons....Why are you so afraid of progress?
I see the children are playing today. All the hate mongers are in fine form today. It's probably some unemployed con sitting in a basement somewhere mad at the world. Pathetic but somewhat humerous in the outrageous statements come from such people as these.

Small dogs such as chihuahuas think they are big dogs but in the end they end up being dinner for the big dogs.

I agree that way, way , way too much has been made in the MSM about Michael Jackson. While I have enjoyed SOME of his music I don't consider myself much of a MJ fan. Have you ever noticed that celebrities seem do drop like flys in 3s. Most recent, of course besides Jackson are pitchman Billy Mays and Farrah Fawcet. Ed McMahon was with "grasshopper" and I forget who the other one was. Anyway it is uncanny how they all seem to go in 3s.

I used to religiously watch Meet The Press but no more. I can't stand David Gregory. I just keep the TV off.

Since a general who is THERE says Iraq is ready for us to pull out I suggest it must be so. We can't continue to perpetuate that money wasting boondoggle any longer. I suggest we buy US Savings bonds, use the money to pay off China. At least we will owe money to Americans not COMMUNIST Chinese. While we're at it bring our jobs back too.

Change is always difficult but it must happen. Without change we would still be marvelling at the possiblity of making fire or going beyond a flint tipped spear to get dinner ready. In the past we endured the loss of buggies and buggy whips as we moved into the 20th Century and now we must change from petrolium (fossil fuels) based energy sources to clean, sustainable, renewable, home grown energy. If not now, when? When it is too late? When all the fossil fuel has either so polluted our planet we will be either dead or very sick? Will it be when there is no fossil fuel left and then shut down everything and act surprised that we have to do that?

Do poor people have a right to live free and pursue the happiness we all want? If they are constantly battling illness and can't afford to go for medical help or for medications that will help them sustain life, regardless how meager it is must they suffer?
Many who claim to be Christians allow fellow humans to suffer in this way and they who behave like that are hypocrites. When the reach the "pearly gates" may well be turned away. Next step be fitted for the right size pitch fork and tail.

While we do need Congress and the President to multi-task there are some issues that may simply need to be put off for later. Gay issues, people aren't dying by delaying these and perhaps some immigration issues (what's a few more months of what has been going on for decades?) may have to wait until we get environmental and health care issues resolved first.

The fear mongers are and will continue to be out in force because change is difficult. They are always out to say nay to any and all changes. We'll drag them kicking and screaming into the 21st Century whether they like it or not.
I agree with Feisty & Cindy, David Gregory has to be replaced on Meet The Press. Yesterday's interview with David Axelrod was painful to watch. David just does not get it, the role of a moderator is to ask a question then allow the guest to answer. At one point in the interview they were talking over each other. David does not know when to shut up, he constantly interrupted Mr Axelrod and that is a sign that David thinks he is more important than the guest. If he has not learned his role as a moderator after all the time he has been on Meet The Press then it is time for him to go. I also believe he is a vain, undisciplined person. Joe Scarborough was scheduled to appear on "This Week" with George Stephenopolus and when David heard about it, he threw a hissy fit and the appearance was cancelled.
The newest CBO report notes that, by 2023, Obama's debt to gdp ratio will be 200%.

Read the report-you cannot go blindly following this Pied Piper of debt as he takes this country over a cliff, however much you may want to.  The report is on-line, easy to access, and not difficult to read.  In fact, on Friday, the report itself, and remarks from the committee, were on the front page of the Washington Post.  First Read didn't notice.

For those who confuse the terms 'debt' and deficit'-I'll make it easy:

If you have a home with a $300,000 mortgage balance, a car with a $25,000 outstanding loan, and $10,000 of credit card debt, your total DEBT is $335,000.  That, of course, is without interest-that is the total debt you owe.

If your monthly take-home income is $5000, and your mortgage payment, including tax and insurance, is $3000, your car payment is $500, credit card payments $500, utilities, insurance $500, groceries and gas $1000, you have a monthly DEFICIT of $500.  You will likely cover it by adding to your credit card debt, increasing your total DEBT.

You can sustain this situation for just so long before your credit cards are maxxed out and you can no longer borrow to sustain your lifestyle.  That is what Obama is doing to this country.

In the World War II era, total DEBT equalled 40% of GDP-and it was money we owed ourselves.  Americans buying war bonds were the holders of those notes.

Today, a greater percentage of the debt is held by foreign governments.  They buy these bonds because of their security and return-the same reason bonds are given for births, graduations, etc.  However, Once the debt to gdp ratio becomes too great, interest rates will soar, due to the risk involved in having such a huge amount of debt.

Obama has his own reality, and in it, there is a perfect world that only he can create.  Unfortunately for those of us who live in the real world, his 'perfection' is going to cause great destruction.

It seems all too easy for many of you to be intellectually lazy, and just continue to cheerlead for him.  I hope that at least some of you will start reading, doing the math, and helping to stop this train wreck for the sake of our country.

GREAT POST - if anyone with a brain (that leaves out MSierra, SF) would look at the facts they would realize that Obama (BoBo) is leading and causing this country to enter a Depression!!!

His stupid logic and math (like California's math) DONT ADD UP !!!

The only question - How to blame it on Bush?
I sure miss the "Good-Ole Days" of Bush

You know, when we had jobs!!!

Why were the "news" agencies talking about America's Recession when Bush was president and unemployment was 7%.  But, with BoBo President and unemployment likely to reach double that - the "news" agencies SAY NOTHING!!!
When Barack Hussein Obama became president the end was in sight.

Do what you gotta do Barack, your numbers are getting smaller, RAD MAN.

Monkberry Moon (Sent Monday, June 29, 2009 9:36 AM)

___________

And so are the GOP numbers.  Funny how you fail to mention that.  But then, when does the GOP ever let the real facts get in the way of a good talking point.  If the GOP numbers continue to sink as well, America will see no viable alternative, will they?  And continuing to bash the left while offering ZERO alternatives makes you look whiny and pathetic.  I have never seen such blatant denial as I do in the GOP these days.  Their numbers continue to sink, their hypocrisy continues to make news on a daily basis, and not one of them has shown that they care one iota about any of it.
I started reading Renegade yesterday and can't wait to get back to it today. As for Rudy being a guest on Morning Joe today, isn't he the one who had his mistress living with him while he was married? Great one to talk about infidelity. Next it will be Senator Ensign to say how sorry he is about his affair.
