Obama agenda: WH vs. Congress

The Washington Post has a C.W.-setting piece on the Obama administration’s agenda. “Obama and his aides have proved adept at navigating the politics and eccentricities of the legislative branch. But as lawmakers attempt to navigate much trickier and more contentious issues in the second half of the year, the narrow margin of Friday's energy vote served as a warning: The higher the stakes, the tougher the challenge in finding consensus within what has become a diverse Democratic majority.”

Video: NBC’s Andrea Mitchell talks with Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., about a last-minute provision to the House-approved cap and trade bill, which would require President Barack Obama’s successors to tariff goods from nations that do not limit greenhouse gas emissions.

More: "Maintaining a sense of common interest across the party is a paramount goal. Early on, administration officials and Democratic leaders agreed they would steer clear of controversial social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. And to the discontent of many liberal Democrats, Congress intends to remain generally silent on those fronts... For the White House, the trick is to keep a firm grip without appearing overly meddlesome."

The New York Times, meanwhile, has a look at how the Obama administration is trying to move the health care campaign outside the Beltway. "With members of Congress back in their districts for the Fourth of July recess, Mr. Obama’s political group, Organizing for America, has recruited thousands of supporters to participate in blood drives, raise money for medical research and volunteer at community health clinics this week, all with the intent of sending reminders to lawmakers that the public wants action on health care. ‘The main thing,’ David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, said, ‘is to involve as many people as possible and demonstrate in a variety of ways the level and degree of intensity of support that this has.’ Of Mr. Obama’s supporters, Mr. Axelrod said, ‘There’s no issue that motivates them more than health care.’”

Video: President Obama asks for video and online questions about health care ahead of a July 1 virtual town hall on the topic.

The White House's favorite right-of-center columnist, David Brooks, laments the dominance Congress has over writing legislation. "The great paradox of the age is that Barack Obama, the most riveting of recent presidents, is leading us into an era of Congressional dominance. And Congressional governance is a haven for special interest pleading and venal logrolling. When the executive branch is dominant you often get coherent proposals that may not pass. When Congress is dominant, as now, you get politically viable mishmashes that don’t necessarily make sense."

The AP writes, “Four divisive issues could dash President Barack Obama's hopes of overhauling health care: cost, creating a government-run plan, taxing workers' benefits and penalizing employers that don't offer coverage.”

The AP also analyzes Obama’s response to the coup in Honduras.

Obama wants our tax money, now he wants our blood.

It is a sad that the President has to take such drastic measurers to get the "Will of the peoples" message passed. These people aren't in touch with America...they are in a bubble, that is sound proof and dark.

And each and every one of those listed items affects three main items in the US: Jobs, jobs, and jobs.
Democrats are an unruly bunch. They think for themselves and do not go into "lock-step" mode as do the Republicans. President Obama's difficulties are with the Senate.  Personally I think Harry Reid should step down.  It is with the Senate that Obama needs to have a tighter reign.
Without a public option it is not healthcare reform.

The U.S. Postal service has not put fed-ex or UPS out of business.  Why would a public option hurt private companies?
Politicians PERIOD! are such loathing cowards. It's status quo as always. God forbid if w/ take on tough social issues and continues to ignore, sweep under the rug, AND not conviently take it own because the polls may dictate taking it on. That's why  it took close to 130 yrs for women to be allowed to vote and 170 yrs for Civil rights for blacks. So now it comes down to another miniority fighting for civil rights. It took honest Presidents of both parties like BOTH Roosevelts, Truman, Eisenhower, and Johnson to act as true leaders not act timid to not rock the boat.
They've recruited 'thousands' for blood drives.

Not tens of thousands.

Not the million plus who were supposed to be his loyal minions.

My church gets a couple of thousand for our yearly blood drive.  Our school system gets a couple thousand for the yearly blood drive.

Am I supposed to be overwhelmed by the numbers here?
Maybe, some of the Democrats in congress need to re-visit the term "coattails".  You need the President more than he needs you!

And, Mr. right-of-center Brooks, doesn't the constitution make congress dominant in writing legislation?  Did you take smoke breaks during civics class?
if Obama and dem leaders want to steer clear of controversial social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, why did he speak so clearly about it and make promises on these issues. a president shoud lead, and not worry about appearing overly meddlesome . [Honesty is the first chapter in the book of Wisdom quote 'Thomas Jefferson'].
We need affordable quality healthcare and we need it now. Get busy Congress, this is what we elected you to do.
White House vs. Congress is the way it is supposed to be and has been except in the last 8 years when all but one Congress was in lock step with the President. That's not a democracy. Frankly I am glad to see some give and take, real discussion, lots of ideas to solve the problems not one man making a decision and the majority of the so called lawmakers saying yes, yes, yes.
We need affordable quality healthcare and we need it now. Get busy Congress, this is what we elected you to do.

And you're depending on Congress to get it? You are going to be so disappointed.
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 31% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-three percent (33%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -2. That matches the lowest level yet recorded (see trends).

Wonder what the numbers would be if we had balanced news coverage. You know, an equal amount of Americans to New Yorkers. bahahahaha
Transparency:  Unions do not pay extra for health care.  Government officials do not pay extra for health care.   Government that cares about it self.
FR; The White House's favorite right-of-center columnist, David Brooks,

Divid Brooks is on what ever side makes him a buck.
I and millions and millons of other Americans have health insurance but we are always just one misstep away from losing a job and losing our health insurance. We all know relatives and friends who would like to have health insurance but their job does not provide it or they have no job and can't afford it. We all know that we already pay high premiums (for high cost service - dollars for aspirine and a glass of water while in the hospital)because we are also paying for the uninsured who go to emergency rooms and get "free (I pay) services from our well paid private doctors. I want a decent basic care public insurance option that will give me somthing to fall back on if I do lose my present policy. I want a decent public insurance option that helps make for more competition (since most health care is now a closed shop of the biggest firms). I want a public option that will break the choke-hold the medical giants have on the availability of cheaper drugs. I want the Republican and Democratic lawmakers to finally come to grips with the fact that they play with health care as a political ball game every term and they do nothing but leave more and more of us Americans in far right field without health care....because the obviously don't care. I will also be angry and make my list of all those who vote against a good comprehensive health care plan and write and blog and send them notes for the remainder of their term. I intend to work as I can to use the people's media - internet - to keep them from being re-elected. Republican or Democrat = it don't matter, because there are plenty of the people R & D's who are without health care. If we can afford two wars, tax breaks for the rich and corporations, and pork barrel spending for pet projects we can afford health care. And if we can't afford health care I want to see all of the above items cut to the bone as well. There are millions of both parties who want this done, know it must be done, and will be angry if it is not done.
The American people want and support the public option (choice). Without it the health care reform will be a farce.
When the break is over go to ussenators.com and e mail everyone. Won't they EVENTUALLY have to listen to
us, well the Democrats anyway. The republicans have not listened to the American people for years.
We cannot let big business, lobbyists, special interests run our country and make crucial decisions for us. We must fight for what is right.
I for one am glad congress is going home! I am sure there are several Blue Dogs that ran campaigns on coservative platforms that should be held to account by their voters! It is just as we knew it would be. Pelosi holds the whip!!!!
GP NW Indiana -

The USPS is running multi-billion dollar deficits and threatening to cut back service.  While it wasn't your intent, I think that's a pretty good example of what a public health plan will offer: huge deficits and limited service.  Where can I sign up?
For me the absolutely non-negotiable item is a public option..  Obama must not compromise on this in ordet to get something passed.  If he does it means that the Insurance companies have won the day.  I would rather his plan for funding than taxing our health benefits.  I think this is Republicans trojan horse to try and make Dems look bad.  But I do see that despite how unpopular it will be, it is more fair to those people who must purchase privately and in the long run will discourage exorbatabt costs.
There is a difference between leadership as practiced by President Obama and the "my way or the highway" approach of Dubya. DC is a fractious place with lots of ingrown problems. Term limits would be a nice way to poke holes the the bubble of congress.

Ron, Eagle and Juan all have good points above. The average pol is by definition reactive while a leader is proactive.  We need more leadership in Congress to match the President's dynamism.

Ron, Harry Reid has been a disappointing Sen Majority leader. It woulld be nice to see a change there in the next congress!

HRC then Energy, then Immigration reform!
Go Obama-Biden!
