IL Senate race shapes up

Posted: Monday, July 27, 2009 11:35 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Danielle Weisberg
Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias
yesterday officially entered the Senate race for President Obama's old seat. Giannoulias called Obama his “friend, mentor, and inspiration," according to the Chicago Sun-Times, despite the White House's unsuccessful effort to recruit Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan for the seat. When asked about an endorsement from the White House, Giannoulias replied, “You’d have to ask the president that.”

Other recent developments in the race include speculation, reported by Sun-Times, that Chris Kennedy, son of the late Robert Kennedy, is vacillating between running for the Senate seat or the governorship.

Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Mark Kirk announced he would be running for the Senate seat last week, making him the GOP front-runner.

Now isn't that special?

you know if the republicans were human beings, then this would not be so hard, the repuiblican are against every thing that is right in the country, as for every thing that is wrong.

--------------------------

If the Democrats didn't treat taxpayers as human ATM machines, then maybe there would be some money left over to pay for these programs. Recall the price tag of the "Stimulus bill" that didn't stimulate anything. About as much as is needed to fund health car, right?

Looks like the Democrats have spent the taxpayers money unwisely.
As a lifelong Illinois resident, I do not care who wins the Senate race next year.  Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter to me.  I just want Roland Burris out.  He is an embarrassment to this state, and considering our history of corrupt politicians, that is saying something.

Hey, Roland, when you update that monument to your ego to include U.S. Senator, don't forget to add that you were not Blago's firat choice, and that you only got the job because the other candidates had enough integrity to turn it down.
Mark Kirk was against it, before he was for it.

He'll have to be more decisive to pull this off.
I've already polished off my running shoes and will be hitting the streets to make sure that Mark Kirk gets NO WHERE near that Senate seat...

The guys not a moderate... he's a Trojan Horse!

Alexi/Senate 2010!
The people of Illinois have had their fill of Democrats. Giannoulias has been tied into more scandels then a New Jersey mayor, including the fact he has mob backing. And as Obama's coattails get shorter and shorter, calling Obama his “friend, mentor, and inspiration," may not be helpful.
Oh good, another Kennedy in the Senate! What's this ones vice? Other then being a raging liberal?

You should try paying the bill!

Listen smart a@@ it's called technology... being a republicant 4 life I realize it's not something you're able to comprehend...

After all it was only after your party got their butts handed to them in November did they 'discover' the internet...

Tweet on my friend... tweet on...
Oh and btw FR Crew...

Why no mention of the markets having their BEST two weeks since 2000???

Nope!  Instead we get that the grand wizzard Sessions WON'T be voting for Judge Sotomayer...

I'm shocked... I say... shocked...

Pass HCR NOW!!
FR [[the White House's unsuccessful effort to recruit Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan for the seat. ]]

Talk about a do nothing AG. It's not like there isn't a corruption case or two in Illinois, and Madigan prosecuted exactly zero of those cases. It would be a little embarrassing for Little Lisa to get into the corruption problems in the state seeing he father leads the Illinois state assembly and is as corrupt as they come. Besides, it would make for tense times around the Thanksgiving dinner table if she ever did her job.
Any body but psuedo Mark Kirk!

Wow, a really balanced perspective at this site.  Finally, a place where a flaming liberal can feel at home!
Go NAMBLA!

Hey, Lolipop

Thanks, because we don't hang with terrorist like Cheney, Bush or Sarah Palin's husband. Also we don't sympathize with the KKK members such as Jeff Sessions and Confederates like the Pat Buchanan guy; who thinks White men built this country.  Get rid of Uncle Pat!! he an insult to America MSNBC

Rachel Maddow debunked that so eloquently on her show.  You belong in the past with the other wing nuts.

Never heard of Chris Kennedy. Has he ever held political office or run any kind of major organizatino or been out there in the public sphere? If not he really should before running for Senate or Governor.
Hey First Read,
Just what is your policy on cutting off new comments?
Do you have a time limit for adding comments? It seems to me that you cut commenting off very quickly.
Just would like to know.
Thanks
Last year the state’s $2-billion Bright Start college savings program lost $85 million of our hard-earned saving under Mr. Giannoulias’ watch. Now considering the fact that this country is over a trillion dollars in debt and the economy is in one of the worst states it has been in during the past 50 years, I want a senator who is a lot more qualified then Giannoulias. I have always been a democrat voter, but this is going to be the first time I don't vote down party lines. One of the other main problems this state has right now is corruption. Alexi’s family bank that his parents started gives out big loans to criminals with ties to the mob. That scares me. If he can’t handle the job as state treasurer, I don’t think it’s possible that he can handle being a senator, and we need a very good senator to fix this extremely corrupt state that is in a deep economic hole. Giannoulias simply does not have enough experience to be the senator this state needs right now.
Hey MSNBC

In listening to the talking heads on Sunday I heard a Democratic Leader say that it appeared we were out of the recession. The point I found interesting was his reference to the last recession that ended November of 2001. WHAT WAS HE TALKING ABOUT? I thought the Democrats left George Bush a perfect world when he took over in 2001? The sad point is he was exactly right and the TIME magazine cover was right there to prove it. He did say the jobless rate continued high for the next year but then things turned around. Wasn’t Bill Clinton’s last days in office in Jan of 2001?

Bush Obama Same Same

selective memory - Bush passed TWO stimulus/bailouts last year and I was on this site all year.  I don't recall you bitching about that?

I am sure you drink the kool aid of "it's not crazy when a Republican does it".  Let us all know how that is working out for you?

Your side needs some leadership - not just the monosyllabic mantra, "No".  It might make you seem a little less 'lost in the desert'.  But I doubt it.

Nicky,

I'm an IL resident as well... can you provide the sources for your accusations? After all he was elected state treasurer.

Repuliklan chain e-mails don't count...

Eh... I didn't think so...

Riiiight... it was ALL his fault....

Had nothing to do the the market tanking under the Republican'ts watch now did it?

And the 'mob ties' thing is nothing more the a Republiklan rumor... like everything else that comes out of them these days...

Riiiight....
I have always been a Democrat and wanted to continue voting Democratic, but this election really has me questioning my party. As a state known across America for its corruption, I worry that Alexi Giannoulias is not the person who will reform that disgraceful image. While in office the past two years, he has demonstrated the bad judgment typical of Illinois politicians. Earlier this year, Giannoulias used money from the Bright Star College Investment program to buy the Illinois state government a new $26,000 SUV – the definition of wasteful spending. Giannoulias tied that same fund to mortgage-backed securities and it lost $85 million. This does not demonstrate sound financial judgment from a man with a background in banking and does not lead me to believe that Giannoulias will be able to help the US recover from our current financial crisis. On top of his own record, I’ve heard his family bank has ties to the mob. As much as I believe in the Democrats, I am hesitant to elect Alexi Giannoulias to represent Illinois in Washington, D.C.
beverly in Chicago: Thanks, because we don't hang with terrorist like Cheney . . . .

The "terrorist" Cheney had a better approval rating then Nitwit Nancy Pelosi. Too funny.
