Though Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed today by the Senate to become the next Supreme Court justice, she is technically not yet "Justice" Sotomayor. She won't be until she takes both the federal oath and the judicial oath on Saturday.

A White House official says Sonia Sotomayor will stay out of public view today.  She's at her chambers at the federal courthouse in New York.

Video: Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., officially announces that Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court in the Senate.

She'll be sworn in on Saturday at the Supreme Court by Chief Justice Roberts.  (That event will be available for TV pool coverage, which will be a first for the court.)

Justice Sotomayor will be the court's second-youngest member, at age 55. Only Roberts, who turned 54 in January, is younger.

*** UPDATE *** Here's what the Supreme Court now says about the swearing in:

Sotomayor will be sworn in as the 111th Justice of the Supreme Court on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Supreme Court of the United States. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., will first administer the Constitutional Oath in a private ceremony in the Justices' Conference Room attended by members of the Sotomayor family. The Chief Justice will then administer the Judicial Oath in the East Conference Room before a small gathering of Judge Sotomayor's family and friends.

The Judicial Oath ceremony in the East Conference Room will be open to pool coverage. There will be no opportunity for interviews or questions at the ceremony.

A formal investiture ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 8, at 2 p.m. at a special sitting of the Court in the Courtroom.

Congratulations, again, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor! [yes, I know, its premature, she's not been sworn in yet].
what time does she get sworn in?

good luck to our new Supreme Court Justice.
Nice to see that the federal government is doing their part for Affirmitive Action hires. Nice job Feds!
Affirmative Action in action.  Hope the oath isn't flubbed.....
Will Roberts administer the oath by reading from a prompter of some sort or will he wing it as he did with Obama? If he screws it up again, does that mean Sotomayoris not REALLY a Justice? Just askin'.....
I sure hope MSNBC will carry the coverage live...

The 'To Catch a Predator' reruns all weekend long are getting old real fast!

We see enough predators around here every day... I'm not inclined to spend my weekends with them as well!

1. What about the guy that raise the pig?
2. What about the factory that slaughters the pig?
3. What about the factory that slices up said slaughter pig and packages it?
4. What about the truck driver that drives said package to the grocery store?
5. What about the grocery store warehouseman taking package inside the grocery store?
6. What about the grocery clerk that sells pig?

Don't these guys have a job??

Is this any way to talk about Sonia? Have a little more respect please.
This is a proud day for America, a proud day for our Hispanic sisters and brothers. Congratulations to our newest member of the Supreme Court.

The entire issue has no place in politics, it is entirely a personal one, so it would be wise to limit any government involvement in it (the private sector is another matter.) I think many concerned about this would immediately jump on board of a public plan free of abortion entanglements...

Tim thanks for the respect of my experience in the Health Care Sector of our Nation. It is a passionate subject for me. I am a patient advocate and have devoted the remainder of my career in the areas of providing resources, technology, networks, governmental services and low cost quality care physicians to those that are in need of services.

I too am a pro-choice advocate for abortion rights. You are right; abortion is a personal choice that shouldn't involve government. I too agree that what ever the private sector does is their choice.

I do feel that any insurance coverage that a potential patient has with a government agency should only allow abortions for those whose lives are in danger, and victims of rape/incest. Anything out side of that is called "birth control" and moral choice. Abortions just for the sake of ending a life should be a program funded by the tax payers.

Tim, I do feel that community health organizations should be involved in abstinence counseling programs and birth control should be advocated and covered under the prescription programs, just as Viagra is.
It is good to hear that there won't be a huge gap between the time she was confirmed and the time she is sworn in.  I don't mind not seeing it as long as the swearing in takes place.
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!

You go girl....
I am now proud to be an American.

Yes!!!!
Congratulations Justice Sotomayor!

Keep up the good work Feisty!
Thank you Ron, for your great posts and comments.
Anita, Eric, Clara, Pat...thank you for being here and your contributions.

The other day someone posted almost all of the names of the regulars for a nice shout out. I was really impressed with all the names they captured. nice job.
I can't remember who it was, but nice work. I didn't make the list but I am here every single day. I don't post everyday, but I'm here and put in my 2 cents when I'm inspired by something or someone.

Thank you Chuck, Mark, Demenico and Ali. I really like it when you respond directly to the posters. Very classy. Keep up the good work.

to Tim: A correction to my statement:

"Abortions just for the sake of ending a life should not be a program funded by the tax payers."

Have a great weekend!
I'm still trying to find one of feisty's posts that actually have facts in them.  But all I see is name-calling, hate and anger.  She truly is not the epitome of peace and unity that Obama campaigned for.
Good for Sotomayor.

The Dems know what she is and it won't take long for the GOP who voted her way to find out they've made a mistake.

All you have to know is Obie chose her ... so you know confirming her is a bad thing for America.
Unemployment hits 10%

Thanks for the dog and pony show, Obie.

Nice to see that Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed by the Senate and will be sworn in Saturday.  We'll be remembering the 31 white supremacists who voted against her.  She proved that one wise Latine woman is smarter than a whole bunch of white conservative males.

"Your argument about the health insurance industry spending money to stop HCR is a pathetic one.  If all of the Democrats vote yes on HCR with a public option, then it will pass.  The Republicans are irrelevant and you know it."
Mike in Woodridge, IL

Hey Mike - While I agree the repugnant ones are irrelevant they still are able to convince a lot of people who just aren't paying attention to the facts, like one townhall meeting where the Democrat asked how many were against government run health care and a lot raised their hands, then he asked how many were on Medicare and a whole bunch of them raised their hands again.  They didn't know that they had socialized medicine because socialized medicine allows people to use the private medical industry.
That's a BIG "IF" if all the Democrats vote for HCR.  The Democratic party is so diverse that it's nearly impossible to get them all in line to vote the same way on anything.  We have too many Conservadems who have sold their souls to big medical and big insurance and they're more concerned about doing their corporate masters bidding than do what the majority of people want, which is a public option for HCR.  Don't worry you'll come around if HCR isn't passed and your insurance premiums go through the roof or if you have a big medical problem and your insurance company decides to say it's a pre-existing condition.  I don't believe for one second you're an Independent as your comments have been consistently partisan for the dopes of nope.  Cheers!

In Sotomayor We Trust!
As a female attorney close to Judge Sotomayor's age, I can tell you that she was not made welcome in law school nor was it easy for her in the world of legal practice--times were very different then.  Congratulations to her on this achievement!
Ron,

Thanks for getting back to me,

Totally agree on Sestak – he’s a MUCH better choice than that Specter character

Dodd does need to go – I’ve been saying that for months – he’s got too much baggage! And is too big a liablity!

And Kirk is absolutely beatable here in IL – His little foray to China to rat out the US’s budget numbers will not be FORGOTTEN any time soon!  Plus we have a STRONG candidate in Alexi Gianoulious (sp?) very popular here with the Democrats.  Keep in mind IL has & will be a blue state :0)

Clara, KC:  What say you & your predictions?

I may need to switch my registration to Independent.

Jill dear,

You’re as much of a Democrat as J. Merle Stanley and make about the same amount of sense… You come here and claim to be a Democrat & yet have NEVER said one POSITIVE word about your supposed party … So spare us…

Go ahead and change to an independent that way you can vote for the right wing whack jobs until you’re little hearts content…

Later….
Ya era  hora!! Un latino(a) en la Corte Suprema de Justicia...yupiiiii!!! But dont worry folks...this is also to say that she has what it takes to be a SCJOUS...and then some :)
A good day for America.
Awesome!  Way to go Sonia!!!
Congratulations Judge Sotomayor!
So we got a double dose of good news today.  Another $2b for C4C, and Sotomayor has been confirmed (like there was any doubt).  The righties must be blowing a gasket with all of this positive news.  Frankly, after 8 years of the Cheney/Bush doomsday administration, I don't think they're capable of dealing with anything positive.  It's as if they hate the country because it's moving away from their mono-cultured, mono-theistic, dogmatic ideology.  It's going to be a long 8 years for them.

In case we don't get to post anything new tomorrow, have a great weekend all of you.  Remember to write your congressperson and tell him/her to support HCR WITH the Public Option.  And if there's a town hall meeting taking place near you, ATTEND IT, and bring family and lots of friends.  And when they yell, YELL BACK LOUDER, AND WITH REAL FACTS.  One more thing about the town halls, bring your children.  Show them the difference between how real grown-ups act and the astroturf protesters.  And if they ask you if these are children, try to assure them that they are adults who are merely being used to make rich people richer.

Peace and love all.

Unfortunately due to political affilliations and other commitments to golf and music I will only be blogging Mondays and Thursdays on FR.

This will insure my opinions still will be heard (as long as Mr. Murray and Mr. Montanaro will allow) at the beginning at the end of the FR blogging week.

Hopefully, the conservative viewpoint will pick up mightily on those days in my absence.
Congratulations to Ms Sotomayor.  Let's pray that she'll shock everyone and be a part of restricting and maybe one day even overturning the greatest moral evil of our day--legalized abortion and the killing of the unborn.   Roe v Wade was poorly written (as admitted by even liberal legal scholars) and morally a stench for our nation.  The "Roe" of the case never even got an abortion and today is strongly pro-life and wants it reversed.  50 million "legal" abortions since 1973 tell us this is the slavery issue of our day.  May Ms Sotomayor (and the other justices) do what is RIGHT and not listen to the powerful and profitable abortion industry.
All the hissy fits the Repubs were having over Ms. Sotomayer and look, she's CONFIRMED.

...I knew she would be.
Use Harry Truman's Bible to swear her in.
It is only fitting since two Puerto Rican separatists tried to assonate Truman.
They were pardoned by none other than Jimmy Carter.
I caught a bit of Al Franken and I must say, he looks like a senator and knew what he was doing, and we know he has the intelligence to be one.  Too often the right mocked his SNL job but just a reminder--if an actor can become president, there's no reason a comedian can't be a senator.

A short FR week but we'll survive.  I discovered this site during the very early days of the primary.  Kind of like when I stumbled onto Countdown and was immediately hooked.  I always find out something I didn't know, get lots of information that would have taken forever to research and so often read an additional perspective or thought.  Thanks to FR and everyone.  Have a terrific weekend and FR folks, enjoy sleeping in a bit and some much deserved downtime.  You do a great job of providing us with fodder for chatter.
"Stuart Smalley Goes to Congress"!
Greg Remington and MO (short for MIssouri)

Greg - you are another name-calling psycho with that "witchy woman" feeling. Ooh ooh.

MO ... we go back, don't we? Just take what I feed you and shut the hell up. It's better that way. You know your frikkin' place.

A major win for Obama and a big blow to the Republican's clearly fake efforts at bipartisanship. To give a similarly non-controversial and well qualified court nominee less support that Dems gave John Roberts in 05 is shameful.

Sonia Sotomayor will be a wonderful addition to the SCOTUS.  I'm happy that she was confirmed, yet sad that the GOP found it necessary to put a false ideology over her sterling qualifications.
This wise Latina, and yes she is, deserves all of the pomp and circumstance accorded to the investiture of a Supreme Court Justice.  Brava!  Brava!

Congratulations to President Obama and to Justice Sotomayor!
Repub heads are exploding at the momentus "stick it in your ear" decision to have Sen. Franken in the chair when the vote was taken. I can not wait to read the rants. Look for lots of words like, "clown", "racist", "firemen", "2nd Amendment, and of course, "Acorn.
What a proud and historic day for all Americans of every gender, ethnicity and race to experience our first Latina confirmed as a Supreme Court Judge.
CONGRATULATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's time to continue doing the right thing for all people.
