President Obama today thanked the Senate for confirming Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, calling it a "wonderful day" for America.

The Bronx-born Sotomayor, who was approved by a 68-31 vote, will become the court's first Hispanic justice when she is sworn in Saturday morning by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. She was spending the day in New York, according to the White House, and was not present for the president's comments.

In brief remarks delivered just moments after the vote, Obama declared himself "very happy" with the 68 votes Sotomayor received and said he was filled with pride at this achievement.

Video: President Obama comments on the Senate’s vote to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"With this historic vote," he said, "the Senate has affirmed that Judge Sotomayor has the intellect, the temperament, the history, the integrity and the independence of mind to ably serve on our nation's highest court."

The Senate's role in confirming judges helped ensure that equal justice under the law was not just a phrase inscribed above the courthouse door, but a description of what happens inside the courtroom each day, the president said.

"These core American ideals -- justice, equality, and opportunity -- are the very ideals that have made Judge Sotomayor's own uniquely American journey possible," he continued. "They're ideals she's fought for throughout her career, and the ideals the Senate has upheld today in breaking yet another barrier and moving us yet another step closer to a more perfect union."

Obama echoed comments made earlier in the day by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who said the administration wanted to commend Democrats and Republicans for getting her confirmed quickly so that should could begin participating in the Court's activities in September and do the work necessary before the term begins.

The president thanked the Senate Judiciary Committee for giving Sotomayor a "thorough and civil hearing" over the past 10 weeks, singling out committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy and ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions for special thanks.

The Democratic party is run by the Three Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Obama, Pelosi and Reid

Maybe Ms. Sotomayer can worry about the 13 lawmakers being investigated for ethics violations, Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., Rep. Jesse Jackson, D-Ill., Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., Rep. Allan Mollohan, D-W.Va., Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., Rep. Laura Richardson, D-Calif., Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind.

Unless you are white firemen who worked and studied hard to gain experience and education in their position so they could be promoted.
Good to see President Obama get on tv to declare a victory for his nomination to the Supreme Court.  Let's hope he can do this a few more times, hopefully replacing Scalia or Thomas.  I'm sure that the Latino community is very happy today as well as women, well except with the 31 deadbeats who voted against her.  One wise Latina woman proved far wiser than all of the white repugnant ones who voted against her.

"Your argument about the health insurance industry spending money to stop HCR is a pathetic one.  If all of the Democrats vote yes on HCR with a public option, then it will pass.  The Republicans are irrelevant and you know it."
Mike in Woodridge, IL

Hey Mike - While I agree the repugnant ones are irrelevant they still are able to convince a lot of people who just aren't paying attention to the facts, like one townhall meeting where the Democrat asked how many were against government run health care and a lot raised their hands, then he asked how many were on Medicare and a whole bunch of them raised their hands again.  They didn't know that they had socialized medicine because socialized medicine allows people to use the private medical industry.
That's a BIG "IF" if all the Democrats vote for HCR.  The Democratic party is so diverse that it's nearly impossible to get them all in line to vote the same way on anything.  We have too many Conservadems who have sold their souls to big medical and big insurance and they're more concerned about doing their corporate masters bidding than do what the majority of people want, which is a public option for HCR.  Don't worry you'll come around if HCR isn't passed and your insurance premiums go through the roof or if you have a big medical problem and your insurance company decides to say it's a pre-existing condition.  I don't believe for one second you're an Independent as your comments have been consistently partisan for the dopes of nope.  Cheers!

In Obama We Trust!
MO Attorney:

Just think of this way...Clarence Thomas wasn't a "Wise white man's choice" to represent the African American's...he was a stank slap in the face to our community. Call me what ever you want, just put a Ms. in front of it.
The American people are getting a little, no a lot, tired of the nonsense that Obama and the Democrats are shoving down their throats. Polls today, and elections tomorrow, will show the Democrats exactly what the country thinks of their "leadership".
To: Anita in Birmingham,  As we say in the South you took the words right out of my mouth. Congratulations Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor.
Tough Lady, NC

Tough? Hardly. Maybe a little chewy.
All Hail Sotomayor!!
John McCain is a hypocrite.
Congrats Mr. President...

Now onto HCR! If you have to use reconciliation... then so be it!

We voted for change & so far you're doing a damn fine job... but we can't take our eye of the prize now!

Pass HCR NOW!!!  CO-OP = COPOUT!

I hope all my Hispanic brothers and sisters remember KKK members of the Rethuglicans Party voted no on her conformation.

Just remember when they ask for your support.
congratulations to both president Obama, and Judge Sotomayor, and thank you to all the senators and congressmen who voted for Sotomayor. This is a historic appointment, a very long time in coming. And to those in congress who voted no, because of the possibility of a negative NRA rating, shame on you.
Another victory for President Obama. Yeah!

I just hope that someday the Republicans can get rid of the facist bigots that now control their party and rejoin mainstream America.

Good luck GOP, I know you can do it.
I applaud the nine Republicans who broke ranks with their party and voted for an intelligent, experience and capable judge.

Congratulations to Justice Sotomayor. Now can we get on with the health care business?
Wow.  Notice no exclamation point. Yippee.  OK.

LGO.
What an exciting and important happening!  Congratulations to all involved in this process!
Very well said Mr. President. Nothing more to be added here.
