Gates open to more troops in Afghan.

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski
In today's Pentagon briefing, Defense Secretary Robert Gates indicated he's prepared to drop his reluctance for a big U.S. military "footprint" in Afghanistan and may be willing to sign onto a large increase in U.S. troops.

Gates indicated that Gen. McChrystal's new strategy which puts a larger emphasis on "protecting the Afghan people" may be a game changer.

"It's not the size of the footprint, but the nature of the footprint" that matters, Gates said, indicating again he's willing to support a request for a sizable increase in the number of U.S. forces on the ground.

Gates also said after eight years of war (in Iraq and Afghanistan), he understands why public support for the war in Afghanistan is slipping -- but tried to remind the American people that ultimately the war in Afghaistan is about the 9/11 attack on the United States, and preventing Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for terrorists.

Afghanistan: Obama's war.
Too bad all the terrorists were killed in Iraq. Now General "Ironhead" Obama has to find something else to do with his time.
What every happened to Socks the Cat?
"remind the American people that ultimately the war in Afghaistan is about the 9/11 attack on the United States, and preventing Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for terrorists."

Secretay Gates, did Dick approve of this?

Afterall, he claims that his policies kept us safe AFTER 9/11.  I can't help but wonder WHO kept the American people safe from the corrupt narcissistic policies of the Bush/Cheney Administration!

Prosecute all War Criminals!
Can anyone explain to me what our end-goal is in Afghanistan?  I mean, what will have to happen in order for the U.S. to claim victory?
Why in the world is President Obama diddling around in this crappy little country? We've got health care to repackage and resell to the American people! We don't need little distractions like this piddly war somewhere where most people can't even find it on the map. Pull the troops out Barack. Make them hand out health care fliers on the street corner and educate these stupid morons back in the states. These people don't have a clue about what's good for them, thank goodness we have Presidnt Obama to explain it to them.

HCR Now!!!
FirstRead: Gates indicated that Gen. McChrystal's new strategy which puts a larger emphasis on "protecting the Afghan people" may be a game changer.

Protect them from what? Themselves? Is that the goal? That sandhole can't even hold a decent election. Just let those sub-humans kill each other off.
Good one on Gates! I tend to agree with his strategic thinking regarding Afghanistan!!

Gates is really the ONLY Obama administration official I can live with.

We want results Gen,. Mcchrystal we know how you generals are.

Anita,

First The Federalist was written during 1787-1788 when the Constitution was being debated as the successor of the Articles of Confederation.  Its authors were not only Alexander Hamilton but also John Jay and James Madison.  You said it was written by Hamilton in 1775 (Before America had declared independence and Hamilton wasn’t even 20) and 1804 (which is the year Hamilton was shot and killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr).  Since you’re a student of History and you know all about The Federalist I thought you might be interested in some of those basic facts.

Second I’m still waiting for you to blow my mind regarding Bernanke, The Fed, U.S. Monetary Policy, and our Presidents support of economic status quo.
-------------------------------------------------

I am not engaging you in debate again Jonothan because I am not interested in the Feds U.S. Monetary Policy, Bernake or the President's "so-called" interest in the economic status Quo. You can think whatever you care to think, and I did say some federalist papers written. Go back and read.

I'll leave you with this good advice. The lesser of the two evils is better to work with than the down right evil. And remember that it's called politics. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear, there is not perfect person. And pray daily. I do...for our leader and its people.
Is the skiing very good in Afghanistan? What resorts do you recommend?
Me thinks it's time to dust off some off some of the nukes we have ,time to roast some Afgan hides.end the game, take our ball and go home,NOW
America's schoolchildren are in the process of writing thousands of letters in support of this expanded Afghan War policy.

Grassroots. Start in the schools.
"That is assuming the parents are capable of reading.

They aren't showing 'strong' critical thinking skills, so it's a leap to assume they can read.

Hateful. Just hateful. I guess people like you just enjoy having Obama lead you around by the nose. Sam Greene, Boston (Sent Thursday, September 03, 2009 2:50 PM)

Hey, Sam, I don't want to attack you personally; but have you been paying attention this week?  Do you seriously believe that a lot of critical thinking is going into OPPOSING our President on every single, petty issue?  I hit my snapping point yesterday with Greer's comments, and I really don't think there is any "going back to civility" until your side stops the petty, childish, surly attacks.  It is demeaning to our entire Nation.  I sat by for 8 years and watched your team shred MY country - now you guys can sit there and watch us FIX it.  I don't mind the complaints; but pulling your kids out of school because you don't like the President, seems a little dramatic, don't you think?

Hey Ms. Sheehan ~~

Take on Obie just like you did Mr. George W. Bush.
Call him names and stand outside his residence. You know how you are. Do it! War is hell and August was the worst.

Not all republicans are bad and not all Democrats are good. There are some republicans that would probably like to compromise, and have shown a willingness to do so in the past. But the current environment has become so partisan and heated that it won't happen soon.

When the republicans went after Clinton during his Presidency, they set a new standard in attack politics that has become the way things happen. I'm typically a compromise and not a hater - but I find myself on this blog regularly "hating on" republicans because I feel compelled to strike back when they "hit me."

Again, on health care reform, I still think it will pass, but if it doesn't, or if it is so watered down it does nothing, we will see huge changes in the not too distant future. The current system is so broken and so out of control (112% increase over the past decade) that the throngs of uninsured is going to continue to increase year after year. More companies are going to continue to drop the benefit because they can't afford it. And those that don't are going to push more of the expense onto the employees. But people won't be able to afford $15k, $20k, $30k for insurance. When that finally reaches critical mass, we will see reform. And the righties will wish they had "Obamacare" because I suspect we will end up with a single payer system.
Can anyone explain to me what our end-goal is in Afghanistan?  I mean, what will have to happen in order for the U.S. to claim victory?

Oh, oh, Obama knows this one!! He's just waiting for some reporter to ask him at one of his monthly press conferences. To date, that hasn't happened.

This stuff is way over Anita's head. She doesn't have a clue. Anita is more the "Bush bad", "Barack good" kind of a gal. You got to get at her level to get a response.
"Gates open"! Hahahahha- I get it. Open gates, right?

What a great idea. This is why many people keep an eye on you.

Obama's lack of leadership continues to haunt him and the chaos that follows is scary. Here is another example of him having no idea what is going on and people are paying the price with their lives.

Obama has always been a legislature and campaigner, never in an executive leader type of role and it really shows. Unfortunately for us, we are paying the price for this poor showing.

Let us learn never again to let our guilt lead us in the voting booths. Don't buy the pretty wrapping and talking, vote for a LEADER!

You asked what will have to happen for us to declare victory in Afghanistan.

Capture or kill Osama bin Laden, declare victory, and come home.

THE 'WAR IN AFGHANISTAN' IS ABOUT OBAMA'S BIG MOUTH DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN --- IT HAS BECOME ABOUT OBAMA'S COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF CREDIBILITY --- HE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT 9/11.

The 'War in Afghanistan' is no less about politics then was the war in Iraq.

OBAMA SAID 'IRAQ WAS THE WRONG WAR' ... BUT 'AFGHANISTAN' IS THE RIGHT WAR.'

HOW WILL OBAMA EXPLAIN HIS LOSING THE "RIGHT WAR?"
I heard a move is on the look at Dick Cheney for a run at President in 2012? Cheney has no sympathy for the terrorist and those who oppose America. Will the Dem's put Obama up for a second term after seeing how he has squwandered the big approval rating he had in such short time? I don't think any president has fallen so far, so fast in my time.

Maybe the libs should run Billy "BJ" Clinton again. His leadership, though questionable was better than team Obama-Biden for sure.

Update!!!

Did I call it or what???

I can’t help but wonder if that NASTY ‘socialized’ medicare will pay to reattach it?  Ain’t KARMA a b*itch???

O'Hanlon says the man got into an argument and fist fight, during which he bit off the left pinky of a 65-year-old man who opposed health care reform.

A hospital spokeswoman says the man lost half the finger, but doctors reattached it and he was sent home the same night.

She says he had Medicare.

Another day...another HYPOCRITE!!
Obama seems lost and confused and still trying to campaign making speeches, not decisions or delivering real solutions.

I bet he is already planning his campaign strategy for 2012 and how he will make Bush and Cheney be the villans again. I'm serious. Laugh, but what else does he have to run on? It's pathetic, but that's what we are looking at and you might as well expect it. Don't buy his hype and blame. We made a mistake once, let's not be the fool again.  Correct The Mistake of 08, It will begin in 2010. Bo and Joe have got to go.

You can get the Public Option

From Talking Points Memeo:

'...Sources: Expect Disappointed Progressives After Obama's Big Health Care Speech

Brian Beutler | September 3, 2009, 12:44PM

Late last night, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ)--a co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus--issued a press release saying he had "grave concerns" that the White House is telling pro-reform groups that they will "cease supporting" the public option.

Though I can not confirm Grijalva's specific claim entirely, after a number of off-the-record conversations with congressional and advocacy sources, it's clear that many progressives are preparing themselves to be disappointed next week.

Low-level White House officials have reached out to certain reform groups that have staked their ground on the need for a public option, I'm told, and warned them not to spend any more money advocating for the policy--that it's just not worth it. That suggestion hasn't been heeded--at least for now. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and Democracy for America raised over $100,000 to continue running this ad in Iowa after Congress returns from recess.

But a White House official told the New York Times "It's so important to get a deal [that Obama] will do almost anything it takes to get one," which strikes some as an all-too-apt description of the White House's mentality.

Many believe that the administration--reportedly in fevered negotiations with Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME)--will put their efforts into securing a health care reform bill that calls for a public option as a fallback--to be triggered at a later date if and only if private insurers don't manage to rein in premium prices on their own.

House progressives have vowed to oppose such a scheme and some are renewing their insistence that they won't accept such a compromise.

If that effort fails, the thinking is that the "reconciliation" option--which circumvents a filibuster, and could allow Congress to enact a fairly robust public plan--could still be in play.

That said, the process is still very fluid, and much still hinges on what happens in the days leading up to the President's landmark health care address before Congress next week.

The leader of one major reform group said that they have received absolutely no communications whatsoever from the White House regarding the content of the President's speech or anything that would indicate from them a change in their position on the public option.

But that appears, for now, to be the optimistic take...'

I support the President because he SAVED all those poor little Wall Street Firms !!

Doin' a HCEKUVA Job !!
you mean the republicans allow their children to attend the socialist program called public education.

****   BREAKING NEWS   ***

"President Obama's "green jobs" adviser could become a mounting liability for the Obama administration, as the latest revelation about Van Jones shows his belief that the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks could have been an inside job.

Jones joined the "9/11 truther" movement by signing a statement in 2004 calling for then-New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and others to launch an investigation into evidence that suggests "people within the current administration may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war.

OBAMA SURE KNOWS HOW TO PICK THEM!

...because Bush wouldn't fight it.
The country gave former Pres Bush more than 7 years in Afghanistan.  The least we can do is give Pres Obama more than 7 months to try fixing Bush's debacle.  If Gates had been in charge from the beginning, today's situation would probably be dramatically different.  Anyone who claims this is now Obama's war must have slept through the past 7 years; it will be someday, but not yet.

Earlier I was reading remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance.  Many of you are probably too young to know this but I'm 62 and I do.  When I started kindergarten, I learned the Pledge without the words "under God".  In 1954, I had to relearn it with those words.  The words under God were added because of pressure from the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic family fraternal organization.  The Pledge was written in 1892; the author of the Pledge was Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister; the original pledge did not contain the words "under God".  The words of the Pledge of Allegiance should never have been altered to begin with; the words "under God" were left out for a reason, separation of church and state.  The author later withdrew from his church because he felt it fostered racist beliefs (words from the author's family, not mine).  I agree with him; religion has become so divisive and you only have to listen to the words of Hagge, Parsley, Roberts, etc., to realize just how racist the extremes within religion are.

Having grown up in Iowa, I had minimal exposure to any other faith except Christian.  There was one Jewish girl in my class.  When I moved to San Diego, I discovered just how right the founding fathers were to separate church and state.  I met many people of many faiths, each equally religious about their own version.  It is wrong for any single religious group to demand that everyone else think and say words they approve of.  While I have no objections to evangelicals having their faith, I do not appreciate their demanding I think the same way.

Another little known fact is that the words "In God We Trust" were added to our currency only in times of war.  The words were not there in the beginning.  But it cost money to keep reprinting paper money and forging coins so the words were just left on.
REMEMBER EVERY COWARD IS A REPUBLICAN. There now, I understand where these repuke losers come from. Only cowards attack a speech before it is given. Only cowards blindly attack a president, without any evidence. Only cowards are lead by someone else. Only cowards question someone's else's patriotism. Only cowards talk tough, but never back it up with facts or information. Only cowards reduce complex problems to one sentence sound bites. Only cowards scream and yell so no one else can be heard. Only cowards attack a person posting and not the issues. Only cowards hide behind the bible or their momma's dress. Only cowards run away from the recruiters office. Only cowards brag about being stupid. Only cowards are to stupid to understand they are being manipulated. ALL COWARDS ARE REPUBLICANS. When any of you losers ever grow a brain or a pair, can string together 2 sentences without hate and vile, and can debate without resorting to lies, ooohhhh wait, now you are a liberal. Wait I take that back. I like my repukes stupid, dumb, easily manipulated, hate filled, sound bite chaser, intolerant tool to be used by the republican party. Republicans are either rich or tools for the rich and corporate. Truth, Honor, and Integrity has no place in the republican party.
Whew!  Good thing the week is almost over.  Anita is about to OD on all that Kool-Aid!  She's sounding more and more incoherant....
We can't leave Afghanistan, because in doing so we will have given the terrorists their greatest opportunity to obtain REAL WMDs!  The President and his team (OUR TEAM, THE AMERICAN TEAM) are no dummies.  Terrorism would go through the roof if it appears they (terrorist) have made the GREATEST AND STRONGEST military on earth retreat. It can't happen.  STAND YOUR GROUND MR. PRESIDENT. WE GOT YOUR BACK despite what the latest poll shows.  This is beyond political affiliation.
