Obama's base on Afghanistan?

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Several prominent Republicans penned a letter to President Obama, praising him on Afghanistan and asking for more troops.

Signatories include Karl Rove, Sarah Palin, John Podhoretz, Amb. Ryan Crocker, Paul Bremer, Bill Kristol, Randy Scheunemann, Jennifer Rubin, Dan Senor, et al.

It's certainly a case of strange bedfellows. Liberals are moving increasingly against the war in Afghanistan, and American public opinion has indicated a frustration and impatience with the eight-year-old war. This letter is further evidence, as we've written in First Read, that on the war in Afghanistan, this Democratic president is in the odd position of REPUBLICANS being his base of support.

Here's the full letter:

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President:

The situation in Afghanistan is grave and deteriorating. This is in part the legacy of an under resourced war effort that has cost us and the Afghans dearly. The Taliban has retaken important parts of the country, while a flawed U.S. strategy has led American forces into secondary efforts far away from critical areas. However, we remain convinced that the fight against the Taliban is winnable, and it is in the vital national security interest of the United States to win it.

You've called Afghanistan an "international security challenge of the highest order, " and stated that "the safety of people around the world is at stake." Last month you told a convention of veterans, "Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is fundamental to the defense of our people."

We fully agree with those sentiments. We congratulate you on the leadership you demonstrated earlier this year when you decided to deploy approximately 21,000 additional troops and several thousand civilian experts as a part of a serious counterinsurgency campaign. Your appointments of General Stanley McChrystal as top commander and David Rodriguez as second in command in Afghanistan exemplified the seriousness of purpose you spoke about during the campaign. We are heartened to see that the much needed overhaul of our military operations has begun.

Since the announcement of your administration's new strategy, we have been troubled by calls for a drawdown of American forces in Afghanistan and a growing sense of defeatism about the war. With General McChrystal expected to request additional troops later this month, we urge you to continue on the path you have taken thus far and give our commanders on the ground the forces they need to implement a successful counterinsurgency strategy. There is no middle course. Incrementally committing fewer troops than required would be a grave mistake and may well lead to American defeat. We will not support half-measures that repeat the errors of the past.

This is, as you have said, a war that we cannot afford to lose. Failure to defeat the Taliban would likely lead to a return of al Qaeda to Afghanistan and could result in terrorist attacks on the United States or our allies. An abandonment of Afghanistan would further destabilize the region, and put neighboring Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal at risk. All our efforts to support Islamabad's fight against the Taliban in Pakistan's tribal regions will founder if we do not match those achievements on the other side of that country's porous northwestern border.

As you observed during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, "You don't muddle through the central front on terror and you don't muddle through going after bin Laden. You don't muddle through stamping out the Taliban." We completely agree. Having "muddled through" in Afghanistan for years, this is no longer a politically, strategically, or morally sustainable approach.

Mr. President, you have put in place the military leadership and sent the initial resources required to begin bringing this war to a successful conclusion. The military leadership has devised a strategy that will reverse the errors of previous years, free Afghans from the chains of tyranny, and keep America safe. We call on you to fully resource this effort, do everything possible to minimize the risk of failure, and to devote the necessary time to explain, soberly and comprehensively, to the American people the stakes in Afghanistan, the route to success, and the cost of defeat.

With the continued bravery of our troops, and your continued full support for them and their command team, America and our allies can and will prevail in Afghanistan.

Sincerely,

Steve Biegun

You know how all we've heard from Republicans has been "NO"?  Well, I've got that little nervous stomach thing that says if these yahooz are for it, I should probably be agin' it.

But I'm quirky that-a-way.
There is no defeating the Taliban. No one has ever left Afghanistan as a winner.

I would be really suspicious of this group who are supporting you.

They DO NOT HAVE YOUR BACK!!!!! on the issues that are important to you.

Take note.

Mr. Obama, as you know, we are in serious trouble in Afghanistan, and this war has been consistently and grossly mismanaged, and we are now in a seemingly intractable quagmire. Our troops are dying, and there really is no end in sight.
OBAMA IS NO COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF!
Of course the war mongers and jingoists would love to send more troops. The more the merrier as far as they are concerned. The Russians did that and got their butts whipped. A few well trained, well placed small groups of people including a sniper can do wonders in a situation like we have in Afghanistan. Bribes for tribal chiefs and schools, food, and other goodies for the locals and it is amazing what those bribes will get us. That part of the world isn't like us or Europe and the sooner we realize that the better off we'll be.
You'll instantly recognize the Wasilla Chillbilly's signature...

It's the giant 'X'...

And can someone explain to me why she's still using the prefix Governor?

Note to the nimrod nutjob... YOU QUIT!  You're no longer governor!
Those pesky flag waving chickenhawks are at it again. First they gave us freedom and democracy in Iraq and ignored Afghanistan for 7 years, now they want action.

Why don't Sarah, Karl sand the rest of the signatories march down to the recruiting station and sign up? We're tired of all the talk and no action from the chickenhwaks.
Hit the road for Afghanistan Karl Rove, and take silly sarah and her hillbilly clan with you.
I don't see any names on the list that have volunteered to go to Afghanistan to help in the cause.  I'm a retired army sergeant, 1960 - 1980, did two tours in SE Asia.  We will never win in Afghanistan because it is a political war.  We can not fight political wars, it is just a waste of american lives.  If we are going to fight to win we must first destroy the enemy and their support base then try and rebuild the country. We overthrew the Taliban and the Afghan people have had two free elections.  We have been training their army and police force for over 7 yrs.  If they can't stand up for themselves and support themselves then more american money and lives will not make a difference.  Why should we continue to fight for people who don't like us, don't want us there and can't seem to pull their country together.  It's time to get out now.  BTW I was for the initial invasion but it was poorly managed with insufficient troops and equipment.  The military was not allowed to fight.  Once you send troops into combat, the politicans need to stay the hell out.
Our troops and those of our allies are being slaughtered wholesale, Mr. Sotoero.  What are you doing about it----having another $150 per pound Kobe beef steak? Or maybe a 250 pound sack of roasted peanuts for you and your illegal alien relatives living in the Soiled House to enjoy during your evenings of plasma tv, chicken wings, and hate America songfests.  You filthy b@st@rd!
Obama loses the Republicans on Afghanistan, then he does standalone.

Looks like some of those who signed should be in jail!
Did the warden approve of this letter?

Who cares what they think about anything!
Excellent letter.  My fellow liberals are being short-sighted about this.  Unfortunately, sometimes war is necessary.  We need to get all of our troops out of Iraq ASAP and send the forces we need to win the war in Afghanistan.  Also, Obama needs to put more pressure on NATO countries to fully support this effort.
Why is the republican machine is so eager to promote war and more killings instead of using even 10% of the money to change education and another 20% to improve the nation's health care.
Maybe this comment will get through the censors at NBC since it is kind of liberal and I am a moderate who wants smaller gov't and less taxes. I think Afghanistan is a waste of American lives and should be abandoned. We have been there for 8 years. Remember, the Russians tried to invade this country and were smart enough to cut their substantial losses and withdraw.  We should take a lesson from them. These politicians in DC need to pull back and look at our financial situation for a second. This blank check mentality in Washington has got to come to an end.
For you liberals out there, and you too Obama, the Republicans supporting Obama's Afghanistan policies  is called being bi-partisan. You can try it too sometime.
Which proves that Democrats would let this country be taken over by Terrorist
If that kind of support doesn't make you rethink our involvement in Afghanistan...
KILL ALL OF THOSE MUSLEM COMMIE/BASTARDS. AFGAN CAMEL DOGS/ KILL IM ALL/ THEN LET GOD SORT THE ASSHOLES OUT. BURY DA FEDAL BUT SUCKERS FACE DOWN
I like very much the writings and pictures and explanations in your adress so I look forward to see your next writings
You must cut off the Taliban's source of money. If you spend a couple of billion on just that effort, it will dramatically shorten the war. This sounds easy, but we could lose support of allies over it. However, a case could be made that they are indirectly supporting the war. For one, the Afghan drug trade must come to a halt. Then there is the illicit money from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan among others -- even the U.S. and Britain.
If nothing else tells Pres. Obama that he needs to rethink his Afghanistan policy, this has to be it!!
Obie is no diff than GWB on this one.

August was a real bad month.

Thanks, Obie.

To put the time frame in prespective.

Just think childern in the 3rd grade have never known a time when we have not been in Afghanistan.

Students entering college this year have always heard "was war with Iraq worth it"?  Yes, we have been there for 19 years.  Remember, the "no fly zones'?
I just wish these people were as vocal during the Iraq conflict noting that Afghanistan was the major conflict and Iraq isn't the place to be.
Thanks for signing the letter, Ms. Palin.

For someone who is just a regular gal, now that you're out of office, you carry more clout than most who are in office.
