Supreme court takes Skilling case

from NBC's Pete Williams
The US Supreme Court agreed today to take up the case of former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling, who's appealing his conviction on charges of misleading investors about the shaky health of the company.

He claims his trial was tainted by extensively negative news coverage, and he says the government misused a fraud law against him.  The court will hear the case early next year.

The other major Enron figure, company founder Ken Lay, died in 2006 -- after a jury convicted him but before he could be sentenced.

Speaking of court...anyone notice that Orly, the birther queen got her, well, you know, handed to her by the judge?  $20,000 fine.  Okay, CA, next move yours, time to disbar her if she really is part of the legal community there. She has never shown her credentials, so we have no way of knowing if she is really a citizen, a dentist, or an attorney.
One can hope that justice is upheld.  The negative news coverage was justified since he and Lay destroyed that company whether or not that was their intention.  Many people lives were ruined by Enron and greed was at its root just as surely as greed drove the banking institutions on Wall Street and the Great Recession.  This case should be another reminder of how important regulation is.  We cannot trust the multi-million dollar groups to "police" themselves.  Government has a role and that is to protect the American consumer.
HEY, everybody- LOOK at ME!
Allen - Omaha, NE--> Uhhhh, ok.  How about you let your car insurance lapse and then let me know what happened at the DMV when you renewed your plates.

Nothing. Because I don't own a car.
It's amazing that Skilling gets 25 years for defrauding the employees and stockholders of Enron out of millions, but yet we have a tax cheat named Charlie Rangle writing tax laws that defrauds the American taxpayer to the tune of billions of dollars, and he's running around free.
Poor Jeff, enjoy your time with Bubba ! He's been waiting for a Girl like You.

The perfect example of Corparate Greed, taking workers to the cleaner's & Not giving a DAUUUUM about them. This is the type that our GOP Whiner's on here love.

No wonder they don't get Comedy ! O well. Thier loss, because they need some Humor in the Pathetic little lives consumed with Fox Entertainment !
Sorry "judge" I'm not buying it. Jobs cost more in the states because of the incredible salaries going to the top of the chain. I've been watching this in corporate american since the late 80's. I will agree that regulations do make "some" of our manufacturing nearly impossible. But I truly believe the majority of the jobs have suffered due to corporate greed.

Vermont Girl in Denver

So what is your solution? Price controls on executive pay? Price controls always work well, just ask Jimmy Carter.

Price controls will further erode America's business base. Corporate offices will just move to countries without the regulations. Then America will have lost both the manufacturing and service jobs, plus the executive jobs, and a whole lot of tax revenue that was generated by each. So keep pounding the drum of "Corporate Greed" liberals. Soon enough there won't be any corporations for you to complain about.
Uhhhh, ok.  How about you let your car insurance lapse and then let me know what happened at the DMV when you renewed your plates.

And also, don't go the ER, but rather go to your Dr.'s office w/o insurance and let me know how that care worked out.

You think you're not 'forced' to buy things!?!!?!?!?
You go ahead and run with that.
Allen - Omaha,

You don't go to jail if you don't buy car insurance. The IRS does not have access to your financal records to make sure you buy car insurance. At worst, they'll take away your drivings license if you don't pay your car insurance.

And the real key to the Senates health care reform fraud is that you have to pay a penalty to NOT have insurance. Nowhere in any law we have today does the government force you to pay a fine for not having something. None! There are some key constitutional issues with that little provision. Just think of the can of worms that opens if that is judged legal by the Supreme Court.
I'm sure his brother Tom skilling (wgn weather man) will be real happy about this, but this guy does not have a chance. serve your time just like everybody else that has to do time!!!!
Not much attention paid to Russia saying "Nyet' to sanctions on Iran proposed by Sec of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not much attention paid to the an internal document circulated among members of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's political party says all hopes placed in the Obama administration "have evaporated" because of alleged White House backtracking on key issues to the Palestinians.

I guess bankrupting America with nationalized health care is a better story.
One more chance for the republican appointees to the SCOTUS to ensure that there is no rule of law except the one of only the strongest survive...billions of other peoples money disappeared, retirement accounts gutted and yet these clowns would have us believe that no one is legally responsible, it just happened you know.
If Skilling were in Congress, his name would be Rangel.

Why wasn;t THIS CROOK BEATEN SENSELESS ??

He's CLEARLY A CROOK
He Robbed California Blind

Hang 'Em HIGH !!

I seem to recall that Chevy Chase made a career out of checking in from time to time on the status of Generalissimo Francisco Franco.  Are we absolutely sure that Ken Lay is not just merely dead on an island somewhere in the South Pacific, but really most sincerely dead?
Mr. Skilling is entitled (I know righties hate that word) to his day in court. Not knowing all the facts one can not pass judgement. The SCOTUS will hear all the facts and make a decision. Which ever way it goes someone will be upset and if they can defend their decision that will suffice. They have the last word.
"Government has a role and that is to protect the American consumer."
Jody, Iowa (Sent Tuesday, October 13, 2009 12:34 PM)

Sorry, Jody, but you're kind of wrong on this. The government's role is to pass (and enforce) laws that allow fair trade. It is up to consumers to protect themselves.

In the Enron case, it is equal to them taking the money and saying it was still there. So they stole the money, breaking the law.

But let's look at a different case. Let's say I tried to sell you a 800 square foot house. I showed you all the problems with it, not withholding nor embelishing any information. And we agreed on a price of $5 billion dollars--did I break the law? If you made a bad deal, without any fraud on my part, the government CANNOT protect you.

The government is not your nanny. It is there to provide and enforce the law.

Look at what other services the government provides:

Army--defense meant to provide stable living/working conditions.

Police--see Army

Firefighting--also provides a stable living/working enviroment.

Roads--provides for trade.

School--originally not under the government but paid directly by the parents. The idea shifted to that it provides all citizens with tools to succeed in the business world. I say it would be best to return to the local levels and not flow from the federal level.

Social Security--The proposed plan was the the government was just holding your money for you until you needed it. That was a lie. The governemnt stole the money and now cannot pay it back.

Health--in no way within the role of the government! Grow up and stop relying on the nanny.
Hang 'Em HIGH !!

"Mr. Skilling is entitled (I know righties hate that word) to his day in court...." eagle1776 (Sent Tuesday, October 13, 2009 2:29 PM)

Eagle, you actually are using the word correctly! I'm so proud of you. We "righties" think all people are entitled to their rights. We just have issues when people use this word when what they mean is "all for me at others' expense".

And while I (personally) may think Mr. Skilling is guilty, I fully hope that the Supreme Court will look at all the facts and determine what justice is within the law.
From Historic Health Care steps to Enron...again.
Does ANYone have any sympathy for this guy from ENRON after we've seen what his m.o. in business has
put us all in a few years later? Funny, he's not even the worst of the lot-LAY and that little creep FASTOW
and his wife were the worst of the worst.
 So 90's.

After AIG and our lovely little greed-induced recession, wait until he sees the
 negative press this time around!
Maybe it was'overwhelmingly negative' because what you did was, well, 'OVERWHELMINGLY NEGATIVE'!
Will the press really even bother with this? I hope they  make last time look like a testimonial.
All those people defrauded and losing their company pensions...Shame.
I don't like the forcing people to buy medical insurance. Let's get real, thanks to republican's, this bill is a bj to the health insurance industries.  That being said, you realize that you are paying for the young and healthy that do not feel they need insurance until they get hit by a bus and then cannot pay the hospital bill.  Those of us with insurance pay for that.  It goes to the cost of medical care and our premiums.  I may now have to drive almost an hour away to get routine cancer screening tests because we might go with Kaiser who has no providers out here and no hospitals out here.  Because Anthem is and always will be screwing us.  They have most of the business out here.

The Judge (Sent Tuesday, October 13, 2009 12:42 PM)
****************************************************
I guess my "solution" is to look back at corporate structure. My experience (from the 70's, 80's & 90's) was that profits were put back into the company rather than skimming everything out for upper management and shareholders. It "seems" that corporations now tend to worry about the shareholders and CEO's more than those who work for them. But a change like this takes enormous amounts of personal responsibility by owners, upper mgmt, etc. So...some kind of incentive for rolling profits back into the company and retaining jobs.

I don't think any of this is "liberal"...seems like common sense to me. (but then I wouldn't mind hopping back to the 50's and 60's - twas a better time for so many)
Money talks.  Average Joe couldn't get his case heard by the Suprememe Court.
aaahhh, now we will see what roberts and alito were put on the court to do!
POTUS getting the Nobel Peace Prize would have been laughable if the prize hadn't already been rendered worthless by giving it to Al Gore for  presenting a POWERPOINT slide show and ignoring many deserving people.
Big money talks and is undoubtably driving this  racketeer's appeal. If he was just a pion (like the people he ruined financially) they'd throw away the key on him.
It seems the judgment of the Supreme Court could be trusted, but you never know. Look at O.J.'s first trial.
