Justice Dept announces pot guidelines

From NBC's Pete Williams
Formally announcing its new guidelines to prosecutors on medical marijuana, the Justice Department says "the focus of federal resources should not be on individuals whose actions are in compliance with existing state laws."

In a written statement, Attorney General Eric Holder said, "It will not be a priority to use federal resources to prosecute patients with serious illnesses or their caregivers who are complying with state laws on medical marijuana, but we will not tolerate drug traffickers who hide behind claims of compliance with state law to mask activities that are clearly illegal."

The guidelines contain examples of conduct that would show when individuals are not in clear compliance with state law and may indicate illegal drug trafficking activity -- including unlawful use of firearms, violence, sales to minors, money laundering, amounts of marijuana inconsistent with purported compliance with state or local law, marketing or excessive financial gains similarly inconsistent with state or local law, illegal possession or sale of other controlled substances, and ties to criminal enterprises.

This will make limpbaugh happy.
Got a headache. Marijuana is the cure.

Maybe we could have used it on Micahel jackson.
Anna Nichole Smith.

This is an excuse for Obama to have his all-sicko pot party. And be sure to invite Letterman.

The old guy will probably bring all of his female office personell. His wife used to work for him too.

The righties will try to find some way to spin this against Obama in 5...4...3...2...1...
Pot isn't calling the president black, is it?

You can smoke and smoke and smoke.....
....and you STILL get stoned!
The guidelines state: Just don't inhale.
It's about time.  Even Iowa is looking at allowing medical marijuana.  Let's see, republicans always demand state's rights over the Fed.  Wonder how many republicans will defend Eric Holder by acknowledging that the Fed should not prosecute patients or doctors in states where medical marijuana is approved.  Not many for the simple reason that it was a democratic DOJ making the policy decision.
Michael Vick electrocuted dogs. Now he's allowed to play football.

Just SOME of the hypocrisy concerning Rush.
Legalize it and get the tax revenue...

But in all seriousness, Beck or Limbaugh will surely see this statement as the administration encouraging Americans to smoke marijuana. It's all part of their socialistic/Nazi plan ,right?

Gez, James, just what do you expect? Talk about defining deviancy downward.

Obama really needs Billy Clinton to be the spokesmen for this effort.
Nancy Reagan is rolling over in her grave on this one.
Stamp out pot smokers but let those drunken southern politicians continue to make a mockery of drunk driving laws and prosecution...trust me, alcohol has killed far more people than pot has, by a long shot...
Hilarious how right wingers get all up in arms about "States Rights" and are worried about "Opressive Federal Government" yet they whine when Obama makes an effort to strengthen states rights and dial back the federal govt's attempts to preempt state laws. You can't have it both ways guys....
Lets compare the side effects of prozac, zoloft, concerta, aricept, ect.. to those of Marijuana? This isn't about what is good or bad for you this is about who makes the money.
There is a lot of scientific evidence that marijuana works better than other medicines for a whole spectrum for problems, both mental and physical. Good to have a Justice Dept. with some respect for science.
thank heavens!! about time the gov stoped wasted time busting pot dealers and moved on to the real drugs. last time i checkd you dont OD on pot at least obama did one thing right!!
But in all seriousness, Beck or Limbaugh will surely see this statement as the administration encouraging Americans to smoke marijuana.

Not just them, many American Taxpayers will see the same exact thing.
Ya, lets fix all the Xanax and Vicodin zombies we have sleep walking around our society and the drug dealers called doctors that are giving it to everyone before we spend another cent on pot! Potheads are healthier then pill heads!
One can see there point, and I'm sure there are more important offenders who the DOJ could spend there time on.And the "Loser"siania Loco that has to post what ten times to try to get there lame rants read.CoCo if you had something worth reading ,most will, but if you are trying to show how wacked out you are well repeating your rants won't help your cause.
My grandparents youngest son (I don't claim him as an uncle) is a lazy, no good pot head who would still be living with his parents if they weren't both dead. He grew plants on their property and stole things from my grandfather's garage when he wasn't selling weed.

He is just the type of example that distorts the issue. Remove marijuana from his life and you still get a lazy, no good punk who would have hustled in some other way to avoid having to grow up and live a real life.

The rabid prohibitionists love to point to people like him and say "Ah ha! Drugs are bad!" They don't point to the civil engineer who is improving water treatment systems. They don't point to the cancer patient who is trying to ease her pain. They don't point to the majority of marijuana smokers who just like to unwind. No, they like to point the bad seed who would be a bad seed even if marijuana never existed and say he is the reason prohibition is needed.

All the while they can't start their day without the drug in their coffee, take breaks to suck down the drug in their cigarettes and then celebrate tougher drug laws by raising a glass of their drug of choice.

I have no problem with this, it makes sense from at least two perspectives.  First, on purely compassionate grounds those who benefit from the medical effects of marijuana should not be prosecuted for using it if it alleviates their condition.  Second, as a matter of priorities I can think of lots of other folks to go after with the limited prosecutorial resources available -- there's plenty of slime out there to choose from.

As for the knee jerk criticisms from some on the right, I would remind my friends that we have a host of more serious problems with Obama.  Let's use our bullets on something like HCR and not waste them on something as inconsequential as this issue.
Michael Vick electrocuted dogs. Now he's allowed to play football.

Just SOME of the hypocrisy concerning Rush.

...and Rush insulted millions of African-Americans, continues to insult African-Americans; including the President of the United States and admitted to abusing prescription medications yet he's still allowed to remain on the air..."TALK ABOUT HYPOCRISY"
I'm sure that "FAT BLOWHARD" will be first in line for prescription marijuana! "TALK ABOUT HYPOCRISY."
Finally, after Obama laffed at the question during his online town hall meeting I lost a great deal of respect for him. this country looses money investigating, prosecuting, imprisoning and hunting pot heads when we could easily tax it and marijuana use could finally benefit us all. Prohibition did not work and obviously neither does the drug war any one with half a brain can see that. Cigarettes and Alcohol are far more dangerous and its illegalization is strictly politics at is its worst. Will we at last stop this war on the American people? Dont let me down again Obama, Americans are seriously tired of the failed drug war.
