Kerry's middle road

From NBC’s Libby Leist
Back from his recent trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Sen. John Kerry said today Gen. Stanley McChrystal's plan for surging tens of thousands of U.S. troops into Afghanistan "reaches too far, too fast." But, he also warned against any large pullout of American forces.

Speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations, Kerry, the chairman of Senate Foreign Relations committee, argued that more U.S. troops would not produce results if Afghan security forces are not effective and the governing and development capabilities of the Afghan government are lacking.

"The bottom line is that deploying additional troops won't result in sustainable gains if the Afghan security, civilian and governance capacity isn't there,” Kerry said. “And right now, as our generals will tell you, in many places, too many places, it isn't.”

He continued, "We do not yet have the critical guarantees of governance and of development capacity, the other two legs of counterinsurgency. And I have serious concerns about the ability to produce effective Afghan forces to partner with at the rate that we need to so that we can ensure that when our troops make heroic sacrifices, the benefits to the Afghans are actually clear and sustainable."

Kerry said in order for him to support more troops there must be a "valid assessment" not only by the military but by President Obama and others on the civilian side about whether the three conditions of Afghan security, governance and development can be met.

"Under the right circumstances, if we could be confident that military efforts can be sustained and built on,” Kerry said, “then I would support the president, should he decide to send some additional troops to regain the initiative."

Kerry made the case for the middle-ground option: a limited counterinsurgency strategy with the potential for deploying more troops. He argued that civil war could break out between the Taliban and the Afghan government if the Administration decided to scale back troop levels for a narrow counterterrorism mission. He also said there are simply not enough troops for a nationwide counterinsurgency campaign.

Kerry took a hit at former Vice President Cheney and the Bush administration early in the speech: "Make no mistake: Because of the gross mishandling of this war by past civilian leadership, there are no great options for its handling today. One American officer captured well our lack of a strategy when he said, ‘We haven't been fighting in Afghanistan for eight years. We've been fighting in Afghanistan for one year eight times in a row.’ That is our inheritance."

Kerry said success in Afghanistan will be when the U.S. can "empower and transfer responsibility to Afghans as rapidly as possible and achieve a sufficient level of stability to ensure that we can leave behind an Afghanistan that is not controlled by al Qaeda or the Taliban."

"We now have to choose a smart way forward so that no one is ever compelled to ask whether we've made a mistake in staying," he said.

JFK - Mr. Status Quo. What a guy.
Anyone going to clue Hillary in on the details? Or is just going to be a surprise to her? Hillary Clinton, the Mika Brzezinski of the Obama administration.
{Kerry took a hit at former Vice President Cheney and the Bush administration early in the speech: "Make no mistake: Because of the gross mishandling of this war by past civilian leadership}

Nice leadership Kerry, you loser. Kerry has been blaming someone else for decades, and it appears that it won't stop anytime soon. Bush left Iraq in great shape and Afghanistan in a stable state. Both countries are now crumbling into anarchy because people like Kerry and Obama haven't a clue about what they are doing.
Kerry: We've been fighting in Afghanistan for one year eight times in a row.’ That is our inheritance."

What is this nut talking about?

Just think of the massive problems the next President is going to inherit from the likes of Obama/Biden/Kerry after the election in 2012. After that, Obama will still be ranting it's not his fault, just like community organizers are trained to do.
These are the thoughts and processes that need to be fully explored before committing more troups to Afghanistan.  I applaud our President for taking the time to look at all circumstances as pertains to Afghanistan and make an informed decision about strategy going forward, rather than the "shoot first, ask questions later" method used by Dick and Dubya.  And Senator Kerry is providing key insight to the President and his team so that an informed, intelligent decision can be made.  It's more important to make the RIGHT decision, not just to be "the Decider."
The President needs to listen to pretty much anyone other than John Kerry.  The man has zero credibility.
I am opposed to this socialist tripe from the liberals. More of yuo need to be forced to make it on your own like my family does. We are covered by the VA and medicare because we earned it and we don't see why you losers can't just suck it up and stop trying to get patriotic republicans like us to pay for your healthcare.
John Kerry's analysis emphasizes just how difficult Afghanistan is.  He makes some excellent points.  The Soviets kept pouring more troops into the country and failed.  The US must be careful to avoid the same fate.  Kudos for Kerry's harsh words for Cheney.  For 7 years, Cheney/Bush and their lock-step marching GOPers in Congress ignored Afghanistan, they have no right to complain now let alone demand swift action.
Listen Kerry, Obama asked McChrystal whatt he needed to win in Afghanistan. McChrystal told Obama in August, nearly 3 months ago, what he needed and that "time was of the essence". McChrystal said he had 12 months time back in August before Afghanistan fell back into the hands of the terrorists. Since then Obama has wasted 3 of those 12 months dithering about what to do. And apparently Kerry doesn't know what to do either, because he's recommending Obama do exactly what he is doing, nothing. May God have mercy on the good men and women in Afghanistan, because Obama won't.
>>>> "The bottom line is that deploying additional troops won't result in sustainable gains if the Afghan security, civilian and governance capacity isn't there,” Kerry said.

So now you're telling us a Lieutenant, Junior Grade, (Kerry) knows more about what's going on in Afghanistan then a career General (McChrystal)?
So kerry relies on his vast, vast knowledge of war in afghanistan to disagree with General McChrystal on the best strategy?

Gee....what could go wrong there? Better talk this over with the community organizer in the white house.....I bet he knows a lot about fighting insurgents in those mountains.
"We now have to choose a smart way forward so that no one is ever compelled to ask whether we've made a mistake in staying," [Kerry] said.

Don't you just love how the Democrats word-smith their little phrases. Words like "Smart" and "Competent" are used to describe their efforts, but only by themselves.

Words you'll never here a Democrat speak are "Successfully Completed" or "Positive Results".
Kerry should just get out his white surrender flag and drive through the hills and valleys of Afghanistan waving it for all to see.
Kerry win another Purple Heart during his visit to Afghanistan?
Obama projects weakness.
So can I trash Kerry's military opinions they way that McCain's are always trashed?
From earlier, Groudskeeper Willie's.  Wow, what a lot of pent up anger you have today.  Where in my earlier comment did I mention ethanol--I didn't.  Also, where did I say this would happen overnight.  You quip about 3 million jobs, well, Pres Obama didn't say they'd pop up from thin air overnight.  This takes forward thinking not backward looking.

Ethanol is not the answer for the future but it is a start.  Farmers are actually getting paid more money for their corn than it takes to grow it.  Iowa doesn't build cars and if there are no E85 cars, there's no point in building the stations.  In addition to the lack of E85 cars, car makers have advanced to even better and more efficient technology like hydrogen and electric.  As for subsidies, would you like dairy farmers to lose theirs or the many other industries which receive subsidies like the ones who grow hops for beer--price of milk would skyrocket as would breakfast cereal, bread, etc.

What about the subsidies called tax breaks for companies who ship their jobs overseas?  As for government buildings, Pres Carter installed SOLAR in the WH; REAGAN mocked it and had it removed--now Reagan was a real visionary, huh.  You want to blame someone for why the US isn't further along with clean industry, blame the GOP who mock, drag their feet and refuse to accept the fact that someday (regardless of whether or not global warming happens), WE WILL RUN OUT OF OIL.  Instead of the huge subsidies and tax breaks for oil companies, how about green, clean energy subsidies instead.  You don't build wind farms, solar power overnight.

I believe in moving this country forward by supporting green, renewable industries.  If that makes me a tree hugger, so be it.  I'd rather be a tree hugger than an ostrich with its head in the sand.

That's the thing about the terrorists, they knew that's all they had to do was wait it out until Bush was out of office. Obama is a gift from the heavens for the terrorists. Between him and his pacifist lackeys like Kerry, that's all they had to do was ride Bush out and wait for an idiot like Obama to get into office. And now that Obama is in office, they know it's just a matter of a year or so before the terrorists have free reign to do anything they want again.
What's it going to take for Obama to process this information? 6-12 months? More?
Way to go. You should have won in 2004!
Looks more and more like Obama is going to Cut-and-Run.

Anyone surprised?
Afghanistan????

DITHER baby, DITHER!!
Polling data must show that the Loony Lefts attacks on Bush/Cheney is good to stir up the leftwingnuts of the party. Too bad the other 90% of the population is tired of hearing about it.
Why should we listen to decorated war veterans when we can listen to a five deferment draft dodger hiding in a secret undisclosed location? Deferment Dick only had eight years to accomplish something, anything. Don't you think he needs more time? Maybe he should accuse the Taliban of dithering, that'll show 'em.
There is no way we can ever have enough boots on the ground to maintain a counterinsurgency through the entire country of Afghanistan. The fact the problems now are concentrated in Pakistan show there is no reason to focus on Afghanistan. A strategy should be announced, implemented and wrapped up within a specific timetable.

If we need to maintain a central base of operations there to continue a counter terrorism program from the air, it should be spelled out, but troops on the ground are never going to be sufficient in number to do the job. Doesn't anyone remember Vietnam? We had close to a million troops there at one point and it still was not enough.

There is no support anywhere in the Middle East for the United States and it's time we accept reality. A draft will be necessary to attract the numbers we need there and I'm sure no administration, Democrat or Republican is going to go that route.

The costs in lives and on our deficit are more than we can afford. If the rest of the industrialized world disagrees, let them contribute their fair share. 9/11 was a horrid tragedy, but we have already paid too great a cost for retribution and we now should concentrate on our problems at home. There will still be terrorist incidents, but we can not let them totally dominate our lives...

Now, onward to more pleasant thoughts.......

Clara and Pat/Boston - sorry, but --- GO YANKEES...
Kerry is perfect for Obama. They are both pompous buttheads.
A "smart way forward" without committing more troops, at least in the short term?

Please.

It takes no genius to read these tea leaves ... it's time to go.

Thank you, Walter Cronkite.  And good night.
Looks like Obama is going to tell the Afghan people they are on their own. Maybe to help them along, he can offer them free health insurance?
Kerry is right about "the gross mishandling of this war;" however, he's dead wrong if he thinks sending more troops will help; it won't!! It was the gross mishandling of the war that cost us capturing bin Laden and those responsible for 9/11, in addition to giving women and children a chance in Afghanistan!!

Bring 'em home, now!! This war is not salvageable and that is thanks to SLITHERING DICK and Dumbya!!  Al-Qaeda is no longer in Afghanistan; BushCo allowed them to flee; it’s over and it’s been over for a long time now!!

Kerry says, We now have to choose a smart way forward so that no one is ever compelled to ask whether we've made a mistake in staying."  If we stay, Sen. Kerry, we will be making a HUGE mistake; if we stay, if we send more troops, this DOES become Obama’s war; if we stay and lose more men and women, it’s on President Obama!! Bring them home NOW!!
To emphasize his profound wisdom, diplomatic skills, and military bearing, Olde-Slack-Jaw threw his basketful of remaining Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, Legion(s) of Honor, Distinguished Flying Crosses, Congressional Medals of Honor, and various Cracker Jack toys across the conference table.  The press was struck dumb with shock and awe at the sheer awsomeness of this giant among mere mortals...even though the documentation for all his awards was still dripping wet ink from the printing presses in his basement.  Put some Vaseline(r) on it, Mr. Vacillation, you disgusting fraud.
Any bets on how long it will take Dickhead or his 'darling' daughter to counter attack?

Let's ALL remember what a 'bang up' job The Dick did in not only keeping us 'safe' but his brilliant WINNING strategy in running his 2 PET wars!

*snark meter OVER the TOP*
Sen. John Kerry said today Gen. Stanley McChrystal's plan for surging tens of thousands of U.S. troops into Afghanistan "reaches too far, too fast."

You bet, John, keep this thing going on as long as you possibly can - those opposing forces in Afghanistan are far too used to seeing us act aggressively -- fake 'em out by working a little more slowly -- we'll get 'em that way.

I also applaud your rationale (Bush's alleged playbook, by the way) -- simply ignore the commanders in the field and go it alone (maybe that'll give you a better chance of taking a little more shrapnel for the team or helping Hillary OJ across the battlefield under heavy sniper fire -- you know, back up her campaign stories a little better... after all, she might already have cookie-baking dinner plans with the big chiefs in Kabul -- and if this ends too soon, she would have to cancel them...  Boy, I sure am glad we have a senior sen. from MA that understands military strategy better than our military leaders.  Where would we be with him at the helm...

In seriousness, John, quit pointing the finger and playing the blame game.  It's getting old.  The American public hired you goofballs in Washington to fix the problem -- not to wallow in whose fault it is for 2-4 years.  If you can't fix it, we'd rather know now so we can replace you with someone who (at least THINKS they) can.
Kerry is a left wing lunatic that never saw middle road in his life. He'll eventally be buried way left of center in whatever cemetery.
And PS: "Middle Road" my ass!! I'm sick and tired of my Party's so-called "middle road" - they've behaved like spineless wimps for the last ten months!!

CHANGE?? A JOKE!!
Provide troops now and Karzai will again rig the election while sucking American taxpayers to support his mandateless administration. Better right than fast.
