Obama agenda: A scaled-down plan?

"President Barack Obama is considering a scaled-down version of the war plan advanced by his top Afghanistan commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, U.S. officials say," the AP says. "Such a narrowed military mission would increase American forces to accomplish the commander's broadest goals of protecting Afghan cities and key infrastructure. But with fewer troops, the strategy likely would cut back on McChrystal's ambitious objectives, amounting to what one official described as 'McChrystal Light.' ... A stripped-down approach would signal caution in widening a war that is going worse this year than last despite intense U.S. attention and an additional 21,000 U.S. forces sent there on Obama's watch."

Per the Washington Post, “President Obama has asked senior officials for a province-by-province analysis of Afghanistan to determine which regions are being managed effectively by local leaders and which require international help, information that his advisers say will guide his decision on how many additional U.S. troops to send to the battle.”

More: “Obama made the request in a meeting Monday with Vice President Biden and a small group of senior advisers helping him decide whether to expand the war. The detail he is now seeking also reflects the administration's turn toward Afghanistan's provincial governors, tribal leaders and local militias as potentially more effective partners in the effort than a historically weak central government that is confronting questions of legitimacy after the flawed Aug. 20 presidential election.”

The New York Times looks at the challenge the shortage of the swine flu vaccine presents for the Obama White House. “The shortage, caused by delays in the vaccine manufacturing process, has put the president in exactly the situation he sought to avoid — one in which questions are being raised about the government’s response.”

Busted? "Dozens of lobbyists were invited to a Democratic National Committee (DNC) fundraiser Tuesday night with a Cabinet member even though President Barack Obama has sworn off taking money from lobbyists," The Hill reports. "A DNC official said it was a mistake that lobbyists were invited to a small gathering with Lisa Jackson, Obama’s administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The official said a review of attendees indicates that no lobbyists attended the event."

Regarding that Northwest flight that flew 100-plus miles past its destination, the Wall Street Journal writes: “The Federal Aviation Administration violated its own rules by taking more than 40 minutes to alert the military after losing communication with a Northwest Airlines flight last week, according to officials familiar with internal reviews under way at several federal agencies.”

A scaled down plan = A certain defeat

Wow I could almost swear you said it was better under Bush
Fire Lie-ermann.
As for Afghanistan, Good job Mr. President.  Take your time and get it right.  This is EXACTLY what we need.  And as for the swine flu, media, there were shortages during other administrations so stop blowing this out of proportion to get people all riled up.  No surprise here.  People will get help.  Nothing new.  Move on.  Mr. President, keep up the good work!
Hey Huckleberry

Clueless about the war?
Don't know what to do?
Don't trust McCrystal?

Why in the hell are you president?

We need someone with guts to run this country.
Some one with a spine.

And that's NOT OBAMA.
Lame is the name of your game.
A factor overlooked by the media, the pundits and the proponents of more troops is where do we find the 40-60,000 additional American troops to send.  The troops we have are exhausted and many still in Iraq.  This is the real problem facing President Obama.  This is the dilema Bush/Cheney left President Obama, two unfinished wars, an exhausted military and a bankrupt country.  We've been fighting two wars for 8 and nearly 7 years.  Our dedicated, determined and brave military personnel have been stretched to the breaking point.
RAZOR-I GUESS THE CHICKENHAWK PARTY YOU REPRESENT ONLY KNOW HOW TO RUN LOUSY WARS AND WHIMP OUT WHEN THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO FIGHT. SPARE US ALL YOU COWARD ANOTHER PERSON WHO HIDES BEHIND A MONIKER!
McCrystal Light?  BullshIt!!!  It's your empty suit, incompetent, vacillating, ball-less Obie who is light in every aspect of his disgusting existence!
This whole Afghanistan Potential  build-up, to me is the same thing as in the vietman war, the movie path to war, which tell the story of how president Johnson face the same problem as president Obama, his military adivsers and his Defense secetray were telling him to increase the amount of troops in vietman, with out reguard for what the mission was.
they wanted 100 thousand new troops in 1965 to match the emenys forces.
and just like now them there was not a clear path to vistory, the johnson administration accepted losses to the amount of hundreds per week, to match the troop build up in the north.
Now i'm only 47 years old and i only remember the war in terms of the neighborhood men that went off to war.
on our block you have 8 guys that were drafted in 1966 alone and only 4 returned.
Now i guess my point is that Had president Johnson had been realistic about victory, and a exist stragety, the vietman war would have ended for us in 1965.
president Obama must think long and hard about this, some of you here are blasting the man for taking his time to make a decision that may send thousands of our men and women in to a war that in my opinion that is a war that can't be won.
our mission in Afghanistan was to rid them of the talaban the terrorist that attacked up on 911.
Now i'm not trying to place blame, but our mission was compromised when we invaded iraq. (like it or not)
had we kept our eye on the our origional mission the new president would not be in this postion.
the situtation now is the same as in vietman, the people we were suppose to be there to protect are turning against us. the same as in vietman. this violence we are seeing right now is the same as the tet Offensive. this war has not line of defense as in vietman, the emeny is all over.
its hard for is to identify our emeny, we are not only fighting the talaban now but other factions as well.

My point is that if president johnson had took the time to think about vietman with a clear mind instead of just doing what his advisers wanted him to do with our thinking about the concequences, just maybe we would not have lost 58 thousand.
the afgans are still pissed at us for what happened when the russians were there, we helped then defet the russians and when the russians left we did as well. we promised them may things and and did not give them a dam thing, deep down they don't trust us. so putting 40 thousand more troops there is not a slam dunk for victory.
so please get off the presidents back and sit back and think, about what history has taught us.
in vietman they were fighting Foreign  invaders for thoudands of years, what makes us think just because we have the mightest army in the world we can defet them.
Afghanistan is the exact same, they defeted the russians, what makes us think we can defet them?

there have been vietman vets to post here and most have said, we must get out, because they had have lived this horror before and don't want our men and women to have to live though what they did.
i'm listioning to the vets. i hope president Obama will too!!!!!!
it does not make the presdent weak, like many of you are saying, all i want is a smart well though decision.
cheney can talk his shit, because he does not have to sign letters to fallen soldiers familys so his desisions is easy, the president is responsible for those lives there.
Here we go again.  For all of you that have so much to say about troop levels, where are your sons and daughters?  I have a step-son and his wife serving in the Army and my daughter-in-law is in Afghanistan, with the Step-son just coming home from Iraq.  I say send the 40,000 and let's re-evaluate this War at the end of Obama's first term.  Did I mention I voted for Obama?
