Obama's Ohio approval at 52%

Posted: Friday, October 30, 2009 10:15 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
President Obama's approval rating in Ohio now stands at 52%, which mirrors his national approval rating, according to the University of Cincinnati's Ohio poll. (The last two NBC/WSJ polls had the president's approval at 51%.) His rating in Ohio is a drop from April, the last time it was measured by this pollster. Then, it stood at 63%.

His numbers on the economy are now upside down. Only 45% approve of his handling of the economy, while 53% disapprove.

He gets slightly better ratings on foreign policy. Now, 50% approve of his handling of foreign policy, while 40% disapprove; 51% approve of his handling of Iraq, 40% disapprove; even less approve of his handling of Afghanistan -- 47%, 42% disapprove. That is a major shift from April when 69% approved of his handling of Afghanistan and just 23% disapproved. But the issue was not as much in focus then, has since become political and the casualties have worsened.

And this piece of the analysis isn't promising for Obama: "Democrats continue to stand solidly behind President Obama, while Republicans are solidly against. Independents are now more likely to give the president negative, as opposed to positive, ratings."

Also, Gov. Ted Strickland (D), up for re-election next year, and locked in a tight race with John Kasich (R), is now at less than 50% for the first time in the poll. Just 48% now approve of his job, while 37% disapprove. And it's worse on his handling of the economy, which is also for the first time a net-negative -- 41%/49%.

The one glimmer of hope for Democrats is that if the economy gets better, that portends well, and more Ohioans than in previous polls are optimistic (33%) that it will get better. But a majority (54%) are still pessimistic that it will get worse.

How do the good people of Ohio rate John Boehner?
I havta laugh at the MSM for Spinning the Republican PR for them. America saw the PR machine at work this past summer & Rejected it for what it was " A lame excuse to Buy more Tea" ! However, there was an Upside to the Madness, the Need to improve America's Education System. Just how DUMB are the Wizards behind the Curtain of the Republican PR machine ?

Yesterday ,Minority leader Mcconnel came out & said the Public option would Kill American's, if it passes & becomes Law. Now, just how more Ignorant can he make the GOP look! Him & Boehner are about the most useless Minority leaders in Our History ! They are content with allowing the Extreme Rightwing Taliban destroying the Grand Old Party.

So Be It, throw me some Popcorn Feisty, gonna be a Comedy session for the Ages !

Preach on Rush, Sean, Beck & Savage, Preach on Brothers !

An Independent Poll taken from 1st Read poster's, show that 99% think Republican trolls are full of $hit, the other 1 % think $hit stinks!

As Chris Rock would say " They Spinnin & Spinnin & Spinnin & Spinnin" .
Cinci is a rundown, rustbelt city like Detroit, once famous for manufacturing and machine tools. Now it is a slum.

Of course they would root for Obama, there are plenty of homeless on the street in Cinci if you are looking to take a poll. Have you been there lately? The Obama prosperity is everywhere. Check the public garbage cans for aluminum cans.
The economy is in the tank in Ohio and Strickland is gone.

Write that on the blackboard 100 times and remember it.

Strickland is gone!
Ohio. Wasn't that one of the states that Obama promised jobs, jobs, and more jobs? How's that worked out for you Ohio? The charity lines at the food pantry smaller now in days?
Another state that drank the kool-aid, closed their eyes, held their nose, and pulled the lever for Obama. Another state where the 2010 elections cannot come fast enough.
How do the good people of Ohio rate John Boehner?

I guess liberals can't say anything good about their party, so they have to run down the other party's leaders. I guess it's only human nature. Primitive human nature.
Just like the rest of the country, the people of Ohio are slowly figuring out what a sham Obama is.

And Pelosi's lies and deception continue. The Botox Queen needs attention. She'll get it, one way or the other.

MSNBC has a heart-wrenching story about young Afghan girls so desperate to get out of made marriages with men three times older than they are, that they are setting themselves on fire to get out of the hell hole. These young girls are only there to cook, clean and have the occasional child. At least Pam and Feisty had a choice in the matter.

Thanks for the kind thoughts Tim!  I too saw that story last night on NBC and it not only brought tears to my eyes but I’m still thinking about the ‘horror’ of it all this morning!  This is 2009 and those women are still being treated as though it’s the middle ages!

I’m happy to report though that my daughter has grown up to be a beautiful, intelligent, liberal, professional woman… so you’re right I wouldn’t change a thing!

BTW… you ‘quarters’ story sent the Diet Coke flying again!!!  That’s one of the funniest damn things I’ve ever heard! lol lol lol

WORCESTER - Governor Deval Patrick intends to close a projected $600 million budget gap by eliminating nearly 1,000 state jobs, shaving millions from human service programs, reducing help for local school building projects, and possibly closing the State House library, the governor and his aides said yesterday.

The only growth sector in jobs this year has been in government. All other sectors have taken huge hits in passing out the pink slips. Construction worker unemployment is now at 30%. What ever happened to those "Shovel Ready" jobs Obama was talking about?

on a different note, thanks for the shot out Tim!  I really think that the this country in drastic times shows amazing amounts of selflessness, but we are just bombarded with these "cereal commercial" to try and convince us that the ones who make money denying health care claims have our best interests at hand.

They come up with "death panels" which insurance companies actually currently supply through hospice.

They talk about government getting in between you and your doctor, which happens daily when your insurance dictates whether or not certain medications or procedures are covered.

I want an efficient system.  Not just with healthcare but with all aspects of govt.

No more 500 billion dollar embassies, no more 22 billion dollar fighter jets we won't use.  To be fair we need to kick out people like Rangel and Sanford.

That might have actually been funny had you signed that "Louis Leakey"...but since you're most likely a hardcore conservative you don't believe in evolution so you don't even know who I'm talking about.

The question originally asked is legitimate...with this fascination about President Obama's numbers and Speaker Pelosi's numbers, what do folks think about John Boehner?

He's the leader of the minority party in the House...the party that was supposed to give us an alternative budget proposal (and didn't) and an alternative Health Care Reform Bill (and didn't)...so what do folks think of him?

It's like my father taught me...you can complain all you'd like but until you give me an alternative you've got nothing.
Do Ohioans think Tea Baggers will do a better job than Democrats ?

Will Ohioans trust their future to a Ditto Head ?

LET'S DUMP THE CHUMP !!!

'...In related news, Lieberman also told ABC News yesterday that he's likely to campaign for Republican candidates next year. "I probably will support some Republican candidates for Congress or Senate in the elections in 2010," he said....

SAY WHAT ??

From Washington Monthly:

'...HARKIN'S HINTS ABOUT LIEBERMAN.... Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) doesn't have a whole lot to gain from siding with Republicans against health care reform. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), however, offered some subtle speculation this week about something Lieberman still has to lose.

"[Lieberman] still wants to be a part of the Democratic Party although he is a registered independent," Harkin said. "He wants to caucus with us and, of course, he enjoys his chairmanship of the [Homeland Security] committee because of the indulgence of the Democratic Caucus. So, I'm sure all of those things will cross his mind before the final vote."

To be sure, this is hardly an explicit threat. But it is an instance in which a powerful Democratic senator raised the specter of connecting Lieberman's vote on reform and his role as a committee chairman and caucus member.

A little something for Lieberman to have "cross his mind."

In related news, Lieberman also told ABC News yesterday that he's likely to campaign for Republican candidates next year. "I probably will support some Republican candidates for Congress or Senate in the elections in 2010," he said.

Lieberman, of course, actively campaigned for several GOP candidates in 2008, and Democrats chose not to punish his betrayals. The Connecticut independent therefore has no qualms about doing the same thing again.

So, taken together, Lieberman is threatening to help Republican block a vote on health care reform, prepared to help Republican candidates in the midterms, and using his committee gavel to lend credence to Republican attacks against the White House, all after promoting the Republican presidential candidate last year.

Democrats are prepared to let him stay on as the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee? To use Harkin's word, that's quite an "indulgence."...'

Rangel said he spoke with ethics committee staff members regarding a conference that he and four other members of the Congressional Black Caucus attended last November in St. Martin. The trip initially was said to be sponsored by a nonprofit foundation run by a newspaper. But the three-day event, at a luxury resort, was underwritten by major corporations such as Citigroup, Pfizer and AT&T. Rules passed in 2007, shortly after Democrats reclaimed the majority following a wave of corruption cases against Republicans, bar private companies from paying for congressional travel.

Folks, please do as I say, not as I do. That's the way we lifer's here in Washington like to do it.

Thank you once again for your vote and support.

We are so unbelievably STUPID to put up with this nonsense!

That's an easy one. The Republicans just have to come up with few slogans, a few catch lines. Like, "Hope and Change", and "Yes We Can".

Worked for the Democrats.

Obama's new Secret Service name.
Jane,,,,this ain't monkey biz here,it was a question about Agent tanorangeatang,your house Rep,and what has he done to help with his states problems?My guess is he has done nothing,what he does best.Now i know he comes from a district full of Neo cons so as long as he keeps his feathered friend happy he really doesn't have to do anything else.The guy is a cartoon,and shows his true Colors everyday.One other thing about Ohio,did you ever get the voting machines fixed to count the RIGHT numbers?
Just curious about a couple of things here;
a) How can anyone "approve" of Obama's foreign policy, when he hasn't done ANYTHING, except apologize for being an American?
and,
b) How can anyone approve of his handling of Iraq? He said, during the election, that he would get us out.
But, combat troops are STILL being deployed in and out of there almost a year after he took office?
Isn't that a BROKEN PROMISE?
In the end, this guy HAS DONE NOTHING.
Yet, he still clings to better than 50% approval in these opinion polls.
Which begs the question..........

Has America really become THAT stupid? (Sent Friday, October 30, 2009 11:06 AM)

~~~
They allowed Bush and Cheney to stay in office for 8 years.  Does that answer your question?
No matter what Wall Street did and does.....Presidents, Democrats and Republicans alike, always OWN the Economy.  I don't even blame President Bush for what happened last year.  I blame Wall Street.  For Obama's approval rating to be sitting at 51% in a Swing State is okay by me.  I think some of us understand by these numbers that JOBS are a lagging indicator and the President's Economic Team are really trying to create jobs.  It is NOT something that happens overnight or even a year after the worst "Crash" since 1929.
Obama has done NOTHING.
He hasn't fixed the economy:
He hasn't fixed healthcare:
He hasn't closed GITMO
He hasn't gotten us out of Iraq or Afghanistan
...in fact NOTH places are worse off than they were when he took office.
He hasn't improved the things he said he would improve:
And finally, he hasn't changed any of the things he said he would change.
His Presidency is as WORTHLESS as a mini-skirt on an elephant.
I'm tired of being lied to, I'm tired being cheated out of my money, and I'm SICK & TIRED of being made to feel like there's something wrong with me for not liking these things.
So the nitwits on here think Obama in 10 months should reverse eight years that took us to a trillion dollar deficit (from a surplus mind you) as well as recreate the millions of jobs that were bled from the American landscape.  You're all crazy to think that's going to happen this soon.  Where were the tea parties during the last 7 years????  I didn't see or hear of ONE.
Yes, actually that DOES say a lot.
But, must we suffer AGAIN, for the sake of one sides political "victory?"
Didn't we learn ANYTHING from Bush/Cheney?.....or are we just helpless LEMMINGS who'll do whatever the opinion polls tell us to?
Obama has done NOTHING.....why should we say we "like" what he's doing, or support him in any way, just because "Bush and Cheney got re-elected?"
Just keeping a SINGLE campaign promise would be nice.
So far, he hasn't even done that.
The analysis is bogus.  Obama won Ohio by 51.7% v McCain 47.2 thus his support in the state has remained the same if not better than when he was elected.
I wanted Billy Carter! Love that Billy Beer.
That's a great number for Ohio this far into a sea of change that has been going on. Ohio is split down the middle on most issues. It has a strong conservative base and a strong working class democratic base. It has it's evangelicals and nominal believers, is largely rural with three large cities and 4 other medium sized. Boehner wins because the republican state legislature re-drew the lines as the suburbs grew. He gained a more wealthy base and got rid of the city voters. He never did a thing for the city anyway except move to put more garbage processing places in the city limits rather than in the suburbs. Obama barely won the presidential race in Ohio. That he has 52 percent in the debths of the recession says to me that while people are more likely to begin blaming him for all that is wrong, there is a sizable number who know that the Republicans put us in this situation. I'm a Dem originally from Ohio. It is a tough state, with cities frequently run by Dems but its tough state for a Dem to win overall. Most state government has been republican and the people never seem to catch on that they haven't improved the state's economic situation.
Pete from Detroit knows nothing about Cincinnati. It's a very conservative city and always has been even when Democrats run it. They are far from liberal Dems. Why do you thing the Reds have rarely won? The city as well as the owner of the Reds has always spent as little as possible on anything. The city is proud of its low taxes and just keeps quiet about its poor schools, etc.
I don't think much of Strickland.  He hasn't done anything on school funding, a huge problem here.  I think even less of Kasich.  The last thing Ohio schools need is Kasich's no tax kool-aid.
As Chris Rock would say " They Spinnin & Spinnin & Spinnin & Spinnin" .
=======================
Almost what he said, but I like the cleaned up version for our conservative, family values, bleeding ear Republican readers.  ; >
Too bad Obie wouldn't be seeing the same fantasy numbers in the other 49 states.
I live in Ohio, and many of us voted for President Obama with great excitement. Ohio has had problems for decades due to the lack of leadership and initiative of at least two Republican Governors, Voinivich and Daft Taft. We don't expect miracles from Obama, particularly with the obstructive machinations of most republicans, especially Senator  Boehner, who pays more attention to his hair and wardrobe than issues affecting the welfare of Ohioans.
Many of us are not particularly happy with Stricklands lack of strength in moving legislation throught the Ohio legislature. But we also know that the legislature, as well as the Ohio supreme court, is controlled by republicans and more conservatives and so it is trying for a liberal. However, he did come out early in support of Ohio "opting in" to a public option. Of course the republicans jumped all over him for that because, they are the pary of " just say no" to anything that is supported by the Democrats. And, that folks, is why Ohio is in the shape it is in. And, I have lived here my entire life.
Ohio's a funny state, liberal in the northeast, moderate in the middle, and still fairly conservative in the southeastern Appalachian and western areas. I once worked as a newspaper reporter for The Daily Call in Piqua, which is in Boehner's district. It's definitely the most bass-ackwards part of the state, so I'm not surprised his constituents love his Just Say No obstructionism to any and all forms of progress. On the other hand, where else can you go and find that the local high school football coach is better paid than the school superintendent? No doubt about it. Boehner's folks know their priorities.
